Reviews

“As well as being a superb detective game, Her Story might be the best FMV game ever made.”
RPS Recommended – Rock Paper Shotgun

“Her Story has all the drama and intrigue of the best TV crime shows, but plays to the interactive strengths of the medium in a daring, imaginative way, trusting you to make sense of the scattered jigsaw pieces at your own pace. It’s her story, but it’s also your story. The murder mystery is as old as popular fiction itself, and territory video games have covered before, but I’ve never experienced one quite like this.”
90, Editor's Choice – PC Gamer

“An astounding performance by Viva Seifert, immaculate writing by Sam Barlow, and a completely innovative concept cement Her Story as one of the most solid and mesmerising releases this year.”

About This Game

A Video Game About a Woman Talking to the Police

Her Story is the new video game from Sam Barlow, creator of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and Aisle. A crime fiction game with non-linear storytelling, Her Story revolves around a police database full of live action video footage. It stars Viva Seifert, actress and one half of the band Joe Gideon and the Shark.

How does it work?

Her Story sits you in front of a mothballed desktop computer that’s logged into a police database of video footage. The footage covers seven interviews from 1994 in which a British woman is interviewed about her missing husband. Explore the database by typing search terms, watch the clips where she speaks those words and piece together her story.

Unlike anything you've played before, Her Story is an involving and moving experience. A game that asks you to listen.

This game is real short, only an hour and a half, but it presents a story in a way that I've never experienced before. You start with almost nothing to go on and do the detective work to discover the rest of the story.

This game is a great example of something that games can accomplish that no other medium can, and I definitely recommend it.

Very interesting story, where you can take on the role of an unknown investigator that reviews a case from several years ago, involving a woman and her missing husband. The game is pretty short and get be completed within 2 hours, but the story itself is very interesting, with lots of twists and inconsistencies (perfect example of an unreliable narrator). Certainly worth the price and the time.

It's also a CRT monitor emulator.

An interesting interactive detective...story/game. You watch clips of interviews and try to piece together wtf is going on. The story is really cool the way it unfolds, which is probably pretty unique to each person!

Let me preface this by saying that I enjoyed the narrative and really did find it compelling.

Unfortunately the "game" aspect of Her Story really isn't very well implemented. You start off enthusiastic to find more clues and end up just typing in random words to try and find new clips. The interface is deliberately bad and the "game" is in piecing together information and the order of the clips by yourself with a pen and paper.

You can't actually do anything with the information, you can't present evidence or arguments, it's just for the narrative, which only becomes followable when you have found enough clips to watch them in order.

Once you've found about 75% of the clips you may as well stop "playing" and just watch the clips in order from the game files. (Unless you really want to faff around in game doing actual work tagging the 271 individual clips by date and time).

You don't actually gain anything in game for getting 100% of the clips, there is no finding out if your theories are right or wrong.

It's cute. The novel way of searching for clips and the expressive acting make up for some of the hackneyed premise (whichever interpretation you happen to go with). I found the lack of resolution a little bothersome.

I'd recommend it if you're into visual novel style games.

A surprisingly immersive and intriguing game, reminiscent of many classic point-and-click titles, with a story that you get to unravel at your own pace. It may lead to occasional grasping at straws, but it's still remarkably well-paced and everything you find feels that much more rewarding. What seems like some clumsy restrictions at the start turn out to be brilliant ways to get you to wrack your brain to find what the remaining links could be. I dunno. It sounds pretentious and weird when I say it like this, and it looked pretentious and weird, but it's actually just a really good story you have to take your time putting together. Well worth it.

A truly exceptional game. Top notch, and to say much of anything would ruin the suprises in store. Play this game if you unfolding, exploration, and story in a game.

10/10 would play again

[SPOILER FREE REVIEW]

Ok, for a game included in a US$1 humble bundle, I got my monies worth. You get about 2 hours (3 hours to 100% achievements) of gameplay which is basically typing in keywords into a 90's styled PC.

The 'gameplay' is to work out what to type in. Anything returning more than 5 results will only show 5 results and will only show the oldest files first, limiting what you can view and protecting the 'newest' files from being shown.

Once I eventually found the answers I needed (and I got my "ahh, clever devs...clever..." moment) I was satisfied, though if I spent anymore than US$1 on this I would have felt slightly cheated. It's a game that you could watch a youtube playthrough and possibly (depending on the youtuber) enjoy it more. I did enjoy the experience, though I'll be uninstalling it within seconds of posting this review as there is zero replay value (unless you want to grab the remaining achievements, which is basically ensuring that you watch every video).

tl;dr - For US$1 it's worth it if you like VHS quality 'who dunnit' and indie games.

Firstly, I want to say, that this is not exactly a game, it's more like an interactive experience. It has an interesting story and good acting, but what really makes this game a gem is the brilliant narrative. It's just so cool trying to put all those scraps of story in order and figure out what happened. Makes you feel like you're a real detective. I hope they'll make a sequel or some kind of spiritual successor.

It's different from most games, and you can finish it in a day. But, it's worth it
Your job is to watch old 90's police interviews. But, the videos are lost in the system. Look for keywords to find more videos and find out what happened back in 1994.

- The actress is very good
- The interface works
- Have not been able to find a single bug
- The price is very reasonable for the experience it provided

SB: "If you can Google, you can play Her Story."

Absolutely brilliant! Highly recommended.

It's not your average video game. Her Story has a simple gameplay concept where the player must search keywords to find clips of police interviews about what happened. There's about a 100 minutes worth of video to watch, but you don't have to watch all of them to uncover the mystery. Well-written with some clever tidbits. A major plot twist leaves the player pondering what exactly is the truth. Extremely rewarding experience, like solving a puzzle.

Many people seem to fixate themselves on the quality of Viva Seifert's acting, but it's good enough IMO. Turn on the video subtitles and just skip over the mundane stuff.

Suggestion: Play it in one sitting to fully immerse yourself in its carefully disorganized storyline.

The idea is good and i wouldn't say it's a bad game, but i wouldn't recommend the game for that price (5,99€).
It simple isn't enough story and gameplay overall.

Good:
+ the idea
+ the music
+ the acting

Neutral:
Story (it is interesting at first) but you are not solving the case

Bad:
- no real gameplay, you are "just" watching videos
- Story you will find out about the twist quite fast
- ending (the only reason why i played through
- too short for that price with (almost?) no gameplay

Really cool and unique game, but i must say, this is not exactly what you might call a "game" i think its more an experience, a cool narrative experience you try to put together, with logic. You must think as a detective, and as the story continues to unravel you get more and more into the game. Amazing and unique, I think its not a game for everyone tho. You have to be in the right mood to play the game, or else you won't apreciate it, and thats a shame, so if you dont think you might appreciate this kind of experience just dont play it, but for those who are into alternative and unique games go for it!

Everyone raved about this game, but it was not good. You figure out the twist in the first twenty minutes, then you go for another hour hoping there is more to the game, but there isn't. In the end you watch videos of this girl talking, and then you search for more videos. Watch a "Let's play" on youtube if you MUST understand this game. There is no interaction, and was not worth the time I invested in it.

On the plus side, the girl you watch is easy on the eyes. That's about it.

I do not understand all the good reviews for this game. It must just not be my cup of tea. The game was boring, and uninteresting, there was very little complexity in the story, and I had figured out what the twist was very early on. Just search the term BLANK in the database to watch all the videos in order, (clear the video description after watching, and reload after every five videos).

Overall it just felt like I was reading every other line in a bad book. There was very little sound of any kind other than very repetitive annoying background sound effects.

I really can't think of any positives for this game.

Review
Synopsis
Her Story is an amazing FMV tale of mystery and intrigue where you must utilize your fine detective skills in order to piece together a story using archived video footage of 7 interviews. These 7 interviews detail the background of the candidate's missing husband. Viva Seifert, the interviewee, won numerous awards for her superb acting in this game, helping it become one of the most popular indie games in the summer of 2015. Even though I don't have many hours logged into this game on Steam, I have previously completed it with a friend.

Gameplay
With nothing much to start with, you first bootup the police video database and begin to watch a few seemingly non-interconnected clips, sporatically taken within the seven different interviews. Your job is to type in keywords discovered throughout your investigation in order to pull up other unseen clips. Some of these keywords are fairly obvious, such as: Hospital, Husband, etc., yet others are extremely obscure (the final keyword). A database tracker helps you visualize which/how many clips you have seen, and if you are getting close to the final tapes (in chronological order).

Interface
Throughout gameplay, there will be an active session of 5 or so clips, and if there are more than 5 clips for a search result, you must view some of them in order to have access to the rest. A very helpful feature is that notes can be added for each clip. This really helps if you leave and want to pick the game back up down the line. The depth in this game is magnificent, yet the UI can still use a lot of work. Other than that, this unique story is truly a masterpiece.

Shortcut
I would not advise using this method to play the game, yet if you have beaten the game and want to view every tape, this method shown below will help you do that in chronological order.

Every clip's note has the word BLANK written inside of it as a default setting. If you search for BLANK, the database will continue to pull up every video you have not seen. This method only works if you add a note (i.e. a number) to the video you just watched, so that it will no longer come up as a result.

I got this in a humble bundle, and I'm glad I didn't pay full price. This "game" consists of essentially following rabbit trails, searching for videos you haven't seen yet to piece together a murder mystery. It was interesting for about 30 minutes...

"But you have 5.5 hours!" Yeahh, I like achievements too much....

Don't waste your time/money.
