About This Video

A comedy/sci-fi with a healthy dollop of gutteral horror. Motivational Growth features the voice of cult hero Jeffrey Combs, with Adrian DiGiovanni and Danielle Doetsch. Director/Screenwriter Don Thacker is a game designer whose resume includes Pixeljam, XGen Studios, Robot Loves Kitty, Rocketcat Games, TOO DX and fast-rising point and click shooter Starr Mazer. The heavily video game-inflected Motivational Growth features a retro-video game inspired chiptune soundtrack by Alex Mauer.

Synopsis: After a failed TV set leads to a failed suicide attempt, depressed and reclusive Ian Folivor begins taking life advice from a fungal growth in his filthy bathroom.

A surprisingly smooth talking chunk of aspergillus, The Mold works to win Ian’s trust by helping him clean himself up, remodel his lifestyle and, with luck, make some headway with the girl next door. When Ian begins receiving strange messages from his broken television set, however, the reality of his restyled life begins to crumble, exposing the gruesome and disturbing world into which Ian has actually been cast.

I went into this movie not knowing what to expect. There were some good reviews and some bad ones, but i figured the price was right to try it out. I'm glad i did, it was actually pretty funny and it really makes you think, it messes with the concept of reality. and i love "the mold"s voice lol. would recomended a watch if your into messed up kind of movies.

Well upon finishing this movie, i came to a conclusion.

This movie is a summery of what I beleive would happen to you when you die.
From every event that takes place some what recently before your death it is recorded by your brain and made into a mix of understanding and non-understanding, like thinking what life and death actually is.

From Ian seeing things that make him question his existance at that very moment to something interupting, making him think about what can or could be. Going from one situation to another as quick as surfing tv.

Lots of events that occur repeat, but not in the same order. like dreaming, thinking about a plane to jumping out of one to thinking about buying a plane to paying for sky diving lessons, it's a mix and bundle of the same things over and over, but not quite.

The movie goes very deep ( if you're following along with it) into mental health and what one can, might or does experience in a state of poor mental health, or even so, death. I certainly can say I have found my self feeling, or thinking like this while very sick. It's that feeling of being pulled out. being a spectator of that whom cannot understand ones self meaning but yet goes on with it's routine, aching at every day, things being but not being, understanding is to understand what not understanding is. that I believe is what life is. just doing to move on, being to be what is to be but what cannot be until the right time.

A final point, if you expirience something, whether in a dream or some sort if vision or thought. did it happen? your mind has felt it and taken it, as if it had happened. nerves twitched, thought and feeling laid out. so what's to say it didn't happen? the experience is there, and from then on always will be.

If you had not gathered, this movie is about what a man named Ian experienced, and kept on experiencing, and was being manipulated by it.

This movie is truely how life or death should be thought of, I give a full recomendation to watch it, aslong as you can break down key points and ideas, sort them out and make an analogy you should love this movie.

Could have been way better. Some things don't make any sense at all. One in particular is this guy sitting on the couch, who is a big slob, but then tries to talk to the audience like he's a very intelligent person who has it all figured out. And what he says, does not add up in the least, it's almost as if he's trying to ruin your personal life with idiocracy. Sorry, this about made me turn it off, but I thought, no, I'm going to watch this to see if it gets really good or something. Because with all these positive remarks, it should, right? Wrong... Feels like a waste of time I'll never get back. Just a whole lot of bad rolled into one. Sad because with a few more heads helping they probably would of had a very decent film.

Motivational Growth is by far one of the most confusing movies I've ever seen I bought the film thinking that it would be similar to Little Shop of Horrors and to a certain extent it is I really don't know how to describe this movie but from what I could understand it's about a man named Ian who has sat on his couch and watched TV for 6 months strait until one day his TV stops working it's at this point where Ian is ready to kill himself so he creates a gas that will kill him however when he's about to inhale the fumes he notices that there is an air vent above his sink so he stands on the sink and tries to cover it up only to lose his balance and fall down it's here where Ian meets The Mold who tells him that he has big plans for him.

I usually don't write reviews, but I felt like i owe it to the people behind it to make one. This movie was really set apart for me by the surreal aspect that was produced masterfully throughout the movie. The cuts between animated scenes and reality, along with a retro soundtrack, really made this movie pop. I am a fan of artistic movies, so those sorts of aspects appeal to me personally. Beyond that, the acting was fairly good, I don't expect anything masterful from indie developers in that regard. In its whole, the movie reminded me of something the Coen brothers might make while on acid. I applaud Devolver and Imagos for making a strange, and memorable film. It isn't for everyone, and it consists largely of dialogue. If these aspects turn you off to the movie, then don't bother. However if you are interested in a strange, fairly thoughtful film, I would recommend Motivational Growth.

Bad, but not bad enough to be cult... sorry :/
Could maybe have been good as a 30 min short, but for and hour and fourty five minutes? tedium.
(Disclaimer, I've never made a movie, they have, they win, but I've watched some, and those were better....)

Really bad movie. Sorry, and without meaning to disrespect the efforts that people evidently put into this (it shows), but the plot is a mess and ruins a promising premise, the script could have been compressed into a short film and still wouldn't be good but it would be less tiresome. And that ending.

You could try it out of curiosity, just dont expect much.

I expected something really weird and messed up. Did not disappoint. This movie made me get up afterwards, and clean my bathroom. Gonna have the A/C ducts checked tomorrow for mold.

9/10 would breath in again.

Its a movie that will more than likely take a few rewatch and even then im not sure ill be able to accurately give a summary of it or even explain it. It is strange, but in the current 'rehash and remake' hollowood style, I'll take a strange movie im not sure i 'get' anytime over a 'transformer 5: the return of the Objectified female robot with explosions'.

Recommended if you feel like being confused and weirded out, which arguably, we all do sometimes.

The Mold Knows Jack

Summary:

This is centered on an agoraphobic, shell of a man named Ian that is obsessed with his television, and a big chunk of mold who attempts to get him away from the television, clean him up, take advantage of his mental ills, and infect him, ultimately to help The Mold annhilate the human race. Or....at leasts that's what I think. The fate of Ian and The Mold is left up to the interpretation of the viewer.

Pros:

- Great chiptune soundtrack
- Impressive practical effects and puppetry used to make The Mold.
- Great acting from the leading man.
- Unique style of narration
- Old references that range from the 1980s-2000s
- Good ol' surreal parodies
- The Mold's godly smooth talking and life coaching skills

Cons:

- Too long imo, the amount of time is not really justified considering the director decided to leave several things unexplained anyways.
- Plot (and ending) is telegraphed to a certain extent very early on; this will probably incite impatience and begs the question of when everything will be resolved.
- The first hour is pretty rough; Ian talks a LOT.
- Love interest is contrived imo.

Real Talk:

Gotta give them props for making so much out of a miniscule budget. The experiences feels more expensive than it actually is. I find this genuinely entertaining, though the non-user reviews are very exaggerated. (calling it a cult clasic and such) If you're okay with being weirded out from start to finish, give this a chance.

Great all around!

First movie I've bought a copy of immediately after watching the rental without thinking twice before doing so!

Will support these guys in the future and gladly purchase anything they want to sell me. Above anything else I've seen in a LONG time (outside of Marvel films) after watching it I could say honestly that I was in fact "Entertained".

The only thing I can say about recommendation - DON'T get it from steam. Their streaming service is garbage and you can't EVER download a copy of what you paid for. Get it elsewhere and be satisfied all the way around. Oh, and buy some bleach and whatnot, because you'll wanna clean your grout, tile, toilet, and then some after seeing this! XD

This movie uses a really unconventional narrative, which makes it ultra-weird to watch...but it's awesomely weird in a way few films manage. If you ever wished John Carpenter's "They Live" cranked it up to 11 and lived up to its lofty premise, you'll like "Motivational Growth".

I honestly thought this movie was creepy and disturbing and just frankly screwed up
im sorry to you decent film makers who made this movie but really... why did you have to make this twisted hour and a half film which sent me to bed with a confused and insane mind set.....i felt as if this was going to happen and, even though thats impossible i still got scared.....

7/10

I choose to call this a psychological horror film
