I used to rely like this game back in the day, So when I found it was on steam I ordered it right away.
The problem is that it's just not compatible with modern systems. I have 3 computer's a PC a laptop and a windows tablet and this game crashes on all 3. It just shouldn't be sold until all the many issues are fixed.

After a rough start and technical issues with Steam, the game has now been updated and runs just fine from inside Steam, WITH the Steam overlay enabled! Developers provided a fix / update that resolves the issue everyone was having, so basically all the angry negative reviews pointing out technical issues (mine was one of those) need to be updated.

With the technical problems out of the way, the game is a very enjoyable classic point-and-click adventure with all the inventory puzzles and light-hearted humor your heart desires!

Very pleasant visuals and that special Monkey Island overall vibe.

3.5 / 5 stars on Adventure Gamers dot com - "A series of small issues prevent it from shining as brightly as it could have, but its fun puzzles in a cool setting make Ghost Pirates of Vooju Island an entertaining adventure."

I love this game, and since its rating was so negative due to spending so many months being unplayable for the majority (game worked fine for me), I felt I needed to help balance reviews now that a patch was finally issued.

All I need to say is that Monkey Island was 'my' video game, back in my teen years. I finished the second episode over the phone with a friend I was trying to solve puzzles with. I love all of the episodes, even the last two. I try to buy every pirate-themed game I can find, especially those with a comedic side. Vooju Island was one such 'find', back in the day.
So, yes, it's Bill Tiller's shameless attempt at making his own Monkey Island follow-up after he left LucasArts. I never found him to be crucial to the Monkey Island mythos, however Vooju managed to make me laugh and, most importantly, I got attached to the characters. Yes, the game has many flaws. But it also got what mattered right, at least what mattered to me: story, atmosphere and characters.

tl;dr: if you want to play a Monkey Island-like game, buy a Monkey Island game. If you've finished them all, buy Vooju Pirates and Jolly Rover, the two best MI copycats around.

About the game. As a big fan of the Monkey Island series I can't really say it belongs in the same group. Ghost Pirates has the exact same controls as Curse of Monkey Island, the same art style and it's about pirates. But it lacks a bit in the humour department. Some puzzles aren't really logical and after much trial and error I just looked up the answers. Most of the time the order of things was incorrect or some small thing just popped up in a place where I just looked before.

Encountered numerous problems starting the game, looking at the discussions I'm not the only one. Eventually I got it running by forcing it to use my onboard graphics. Using a video card just wouldn't work.

However problems left asside I did enjoy the game and would recommend it when it's on sale. Looking at my play time I've finished it in about 10 to 12 hours.

The game starts off great and then you start playing the actual game. Oh so much disapointment. The game did run on my system. Windows 7 64 bit.

The game starts you off as ghosts. So you can go thru certain things unless its a door then you cant. Dont ask me it why didnt make any sense to me either. You start off with the lead ghost papa doc. and a line of salt you cannot cross. So I was stuck at this point. There is a coconut farm your supposed to go to. I did get that part right. Now your supposed to shake a ladder so you knock off the guy off it. Yes you can grab some things and other things no. Dont ask me why. So you knock him off to open the shed that contains other coconuts that somehow open up and leak milk into a volcano stream. So chickens can come and eat the salt. No joke this is the solution more or less to the first part of this game. Its even more confusing to watch.

So why doesnt papa doc just open up the door of coconuts? Some silly reason of they would just close it again. Oh Boy. I had to watch a video on this just to see how to work this part of the puzzle. Their are no hints inside the game. None. The game is just a mess to be honest. Its not fun its tedious and it feels like work. Its sad to because I really want to like it but the game just feels like a very lazy effort was put into it. The game has some puzzles but logical? Not to me.

So great looking game. Terrible gameplay. Wander around until you find the only solution that is available. Its games like this that killed the click and point adventure game. I got this game in a bundle. Nope I do not recommend this game even if you could get it working. Its boring and its dull. Sad.

Just a side note. I spent most of my time on youtube watching a video walkthru of this game. It didnt inspire me to want to play this in the least. Its a confusing game. More care should have been applied to this game.

Played it on Windows 8.1 x64 (latest nvidia drivers) and I had no problems starting the game, played it in the 16:10 setting with 4x antialiasing (there were sometimes graphical glitches during the game (like characters walking through the backgroundplate or animations playing at the wrong position), and it did quit once when I tried to go to another location, so be sure to save your game every now and then)..

The game itself is quite fun if you like these point and click adventures (at least I thought it was quite fun).. There are 3 acts and every act has you playing as the 3 main characters on their own mission.
But there are some stuff I find not well done, like not explaining you could use objects on the characters in your inventory (I was stuck on papa when I just switched characters and there it was said you should ask another character about the object (or something like that), only then I knew I needed to use the character icons sometimes).
There are 2 'puzzles' which are extremely annoying as it kinda needs you to just guess the correct images in a specific order.. and especially with the second 'image' puzzle it seems if you don't get it right the first time you can't seem to finish it, so be sure to save when you're jane and entering the temple to defeat greenbeard..
Most of the puzzles are straight forward if you look around and just use object together or ask the other characters about it.
I bought it in a pack of more games with the pack costing about 3 euro's, so I definitly think it's worth the price, but the regular 10 euro it is on steam in the glitchie state it is, I would not recommend it, anything below 5 euro's I can..

Can't play it. Says I have over an hour of play time. When I go to launch nothing happens no loading screen or anything. The game says it's running but yet it's not listed even in my applications. Wish I could write an actual review. Maybe it's my hardware? Either way, I'm guessing if you have a modern PC this game will not work.

I was able to play this on my Windows 7 64-bit system. I have dual monitors, and for some reason it insisted on running on the secondary monitor. I had to disable the second monitor to make it run on the primary. It also failed to run at all sometimes when the second monitor was active. But turning off the second monitor made it work fine.

I liked the art work. The game play was a bit strange. You could get "ideas" and store them for later use, but you couldn't actually pick up items. The story felt disjointed, jumping between scenes without a smooth transition. There were long cut scenes that couldn't be paused or rewound, so try to play this in an environment without potential for interruptions.

Most disconcerting was that there was a lot of interplay between the characters, love interests, and other back story, and in the end none of that was brought to any conclusion. It was just solve the last puzzle, game over. It felt like they left out the last chapter of a book.

So it looked good, characters were interesting, it was reasonably fun to play, but I'm kind of neutral about my feelings. If you like this sort of thing, it might be worth a few dollars to you. It took me about 18 hours to play, with copious help from a walkthrough.

Previously I couldn't play the game, but with the Dec. 5 update the game starts up for me (Windows 10).

I will start off by saying that I enjoyed the game. I enjoyed playing the Monkey Island games and this game does scratch the itch a bit for playing a point-and-click adventure game in a pirate setting with comedy. No doubt the similarity is there because the designer originally worked on the visuals of Monkey Island. What I liked the most were the characters. Each one, Papa Doc, Blue Belly, and Jane Sterling, are strikingly different from each other yet mesh well together as a trio out to dismantle the villain's plans.

However, the game does have its faults but mainly due to bugs. Despite being able to play the game now, most of the cutscenes between acts have failed to play for me. Fortunately the game didn't crash out and was able to skip to the next act, but it is a hassle as information about the plot is mentioned during those times. Furthermore, from what I have seen, the transitions can be fairly abrupt in terms of continuity between scenes. Another issue is that the gameplay becomes buggier later in the game. For example, after moving a laundry basket from one location to another, hovering the mouse cursor over its former location would still allow an action on it. Clicking it again would then trigger the same action again. It's not game breaking but it is there.

Overall, I would recommend the game. It's a fairly good point-and-click adventure game and the bugs weren't serious enough for me to stop playing it. I hope that the developers will make a sequel one day after they finish making their spin-off of this game.

Tried all the workarounds to get it working and still does not work. Too many other options that DO work so just going to leave it uninstalled. Too bad because it seemed like it would have been fun.

Meh story, meh graphics, meh gameplay, meh music, meh puzzles.

If you really love Monkey Island and played those to death, or point and click adventure games with really loose logic, then consider this.

*Note: I'm reviewing from modern perspective, I did not play this game at original launch and have no nostalgia for it.

4/10 - Not good enough to buy, but all right to play if you get it in a bundle or on sale.

The problem with "Ghost Pirates..." is that it, sadly, does not quite realise the potential it had in any area. The premise is very good - three different characters linked by a voodoo curse can talk telepathically and become ghosts. Unfortunately, the ghost part is not for the player to use at all - the characters will just become ghosts when the game needs them to, so there are no nifty puzzles to figure out through, say, combined use of physical body and ghost-hood. And the telepathic link starts off interesting - you ask others about things you don't know about - but, given the counter-intuitiveness of most puzzles, this soon devolves into one more inventory item that you combine randomly with anything in the hope of advancing.

The authors of this game really, really should have played "Discworld Noir" first. They would have picked up a lot of very useful guidelines, such as how to do switching between different forms of the PC to great puzzle advantage. And exactly how much good voice acting matters, especially when you have bad 3D graphics.

Because the two main problems of "Ghost Pirates..." are the horrible 3D models, and voice acting. The 3D elements stick out like a sore thumb from the breathtakingly beautiful backgrounds, making you wish you could play this in FPP and just watch the amazing pictures without the "3D models" punching holes in them.
And since you have to watch the clunky, graceless things, they could have at least spoken well, because while the actual lines are often pretty funny, the voice actors speak as if doing extremely thick accents took up 100% of their powers and none was left for actual delivery. So the swashbuckling dashing spy talks as if she didn't understand her own words, and the bokor is permanently in "me big black angry guy" mode, even when waxing poetic about his lost love. The voices are so insufferable I mostly played on mute, and then a cutscene happened and I had to reload, because they have no subtitles for some inscrutable reason.

All in all, I still give a positive opinion because I'm glad someone made a game like this, but it would need some serious overhaul to be a success.

after update working on win 10 :) so I change my recommendation and review

- love artstyle!
- great song at beginning

- no subtitles in cinematics
- works in very low resolution like 800x600 or something like that
- low resolutions of 2d graphics, I almost can't read names at the beginning :/
- almost no options to change, graphical, audio etc, barely minimum
