About This Content

The MiG-21bis is a delta wing, supersonic, fighter-interceptor jet aircraft. Much like the AK-47 became the everymans' rifle, the MiG-21 has been operated by more than 40 countries worldwide, and has enjoyed the longest production run of any modern jet fighter to date. The MiG-21, in all of its' variants, has fought in wars stretching all the way from the Vietnam War in the 1960's to the modern day Syrian Civil War. Owing to it's unique blend of versatility, ruggedness and maintainability, the MiG-21 remains in active service to this very day. Initially designed as a pure-bred interceptor, the MiG-21 has over the years evolved into a hybrid multirole aircraft. In addition to a vast Air-to-Air arsenal, it can effectively employ unguided rockets, bombs and radar-guided missiles to destroy ground or naval targets.

Leatherneck Simulations' recreation of the MiG-21 is, by far, the most accurate and comprehensive simulation of a supersonic jet fighter to date. The fully simulated systems, interactive cockpit, advanced flight modeling and incredible graphical fidelity come together to create a package that will provide you with the most authentic simulation possible. So strap in, and get ready to experience the rebirth of a legend.

The DCS: MiG-21 plugs in seamlessly into the modular DCS: World framework, allowing you to fly the MiG-21 in a dynamic, fully realized combat environment, with and against capable air and ground threats. This module ships with Training and Singleplayer missions, as well as a fully realized Singleplayer Campaign.

Key Features of the DCS: MiG-21Bis

I want to recommend this module but I can't.

Lots of problems with the serial key failing to reactivate(?!?!) when nothing else has changed in the system.
This is the only module I have had serial key issues with and the developer does not answer emails sent to customer support. Luckily I got help from ED forum users who managed to help me clean out my registry and reactivate.

The training missions. Don't get me started on the training missions!!! Take for example the cold startup training.
Where other modules are great and explain why you are doing things in a certain sequence.
The Mig21 training.. I quote from the top of my head...
"I have a german shepard his name is (Hit the APU switch)"
"zzzz... You are student 10 through here I don't care (Hit this and that button)"
"zzzz.. my girlfriends name is (Start the engine)"

And now as of last update (23 Sep 2016) if you try to fly the Mig21 you will crash DCS to desktop.
Again, only this module has this problem.

I really don't get it. There is an open ALPHA branch and an open BETA branch and they release this type of bug into the STABLE branch ? Please LNS, do you even try your products before releasing them ?

EDIT: Adding link to screenshot of the cold startup issue, check out the text uppe right corner.
Makes no sense and makes me think a 4 year old released this module.

Buy this if you like Cold War Soviet jets. The cockpit and aircraft are beautiful to look at and you get a wide selection of equipment to use including JATO boosters, nuclear bombs, beam-riding missiles, illumination bombs, gunpods and a jamming pod. Leatherneck has clearly spent a lot of time and effort working on this module.

Despite being a full fidelity simulation, the MiG is a surprisingly easy but tricky aircraft to learn since you have to deal with a lot of quirks and oddities. Start-up sequence is painlessly short. The trickiest part to mastering the MiG is landing it. Poor forward visibility and low-speed handing characteristics means you'll be making touchdowns at around 350km/h. Unfortunately, the Leatherneck manual could be better. It lifts text from the more comprehensive original MiG-21Bis manual which everyone should read.

Note that the MiG, like the Sabre and WW2 fighters, currently does not have a lot of content in DCS World that complements it. Against other modules there isn't a fair matchup for air to air combat and the AI piloted F-4E and F-5Es will irritate you with their crazy acrobatics using the simplified flight models. Against modern anti-aircraft threats, the MiG is also going to have a bad day.

Although you have a good selection of bombs and rockets, ground attack in the MiG demands that you get in close and dive steeply onto your targets making you vulnerable to AAA and MANPADS. The Kh-66 beam-riding missile is the exception to this but at long range you will only reliably hit large targets like ships and buildings.

The MiG has no beyond-visual-range (BVR) capability but you can still carry a decent array of AAMs including the R-60M. No fancy nightvision or thermal imaging here too, you'll have to make do with a flashlight.

  • Tutorials aren't voiced, the devs hope to add voice acting in the future.
  • Initial release is buggy and has poor performance. Hopefully this will be patched sooner rather than later.
  • Instruments are in metric, if you are too used to Western aircraft you may be put off by this.
  • More skins and a template is underway.
  • You can use keys bought on steam with the non-steam version but you can no longer redeem keys bought on ED's store with the steam version.

So far, the MiG-21 has mostly lived up to my expectations...mostly.

First thing you need to realise is that the MiG-21, being Soviet, has a very different philosophy to systems than any Western aircraft, so most of what you know needs to go out the window. Having said that, being a '50s vintage design, it is a fairly simple aircraft at the end of the day. Getting the MiG going from cold and dark is pretty easy; it's on about the same level as the F-86 Sabre, a bit harder than the P-51D and a LOT easier than the A-10C. No complicated electronics here, apart from the radar. One thing to be mindful of; the MiG-21 needs ground electric power to start, so unless you are at a friendly airfield, you're not going anywhere.

The second irritation is the flight model, and sadly it's a bit of a limitation in DCS at the moment. The model is great if you're flying a subsonic aircraft like the A-10, but once you start flirting with the sound barrier, things go a bit haywire. Comparing acceleration times to the official flight manual (and USAF intel reports), the DCS MiG-21 is basically correct from zero to about Mach 0.9, and beyond Mach 1.3. In that troublesome transonic range, the DCS MiG is hopelessly slow, which is kind of a dealbreaker - the aircraft struggles to exceed Mach 1.1-1.2, even clean, when it should sail straight on to its top speed without a huge amount of drama. Also, some of the other features, such as boundary layer control, are kind of fudged in and as a result don't work all that well. The dev is looking into this, but my understanding is that this is a model limitation (many missiles are similarly hurt by poor transonic modeling) and a fix could be a long time in the making.

Finally, the landing gear of the MiG-21 is (for the moment) hopeless. It's as if they decided to use superballs instead of hydropneumatic dampers, making the aircraft very unruly on its (alarmingly fast) takeoff and landing runs. Fortunately, the dev has said this is a high-priority fix.

Even with the problems (and bearing in mind that this module is still technically in beta), DCS MiG-21 is already pretty much my favourite DCS module, and is well worth the price of admission.

19 November UPDATE:

The developer has fixed the issue with both the landing gear and the flight model. The aircraft is controllable on the runway, and it can reach Mach 2.05 as it says on the tin. Any reservations I had about this DLC have been addressed. Great job!

Wanna fly a Mig 21? You have two options:

1) Go the the Czech Republic or Romania and buy a surplus Mig for thousands of dollars you will never get to fly in combat and have to pay thousands more in taxes, fuel costs, basing, etc

2) Buy this game

This is the best simulation of the Mig 21 not because it is the only one ever, but because of the sheer amount of detail. With the fully clickable cockpit and flight models, after playing this game you could hop into that Mig in option #1 and fly into the sunset.

Warning: This plane is a highly functioning alcoholic, only works great when full of alcohol! It gets serious hangovers if it runs out "cooling fluid" and can't concentrate (lock) on anything. (moustache for pilots not mandatory but helps greatly)

Seriously though, i love this bucket of bolts! Made me believe in engine spirits.

95%/10 would add "cooling fluid" to their orange juice again.

One of the most polished and refined modules. The Mig-21 is an oldie but a goodie. Even if you have no interests in Russian jets (like me!), the quality of the module makes you interested. Also, it has a great development team at Leatherneck Sims. Great communication, excellent support.

A well detailed module and a fun to fly jet. The only thing that one needs to practise on is landing and navigation to wayponts. Landing is different in Mig 21. You also need to be learn the manual and tutorial before going combat.

But Flying the Mig 21 against an AI F4 phantom would seem challenging....The AI jet F4 model has better turn performance than the mig. The Mig being PFM model will need to be more careful.

All in all its a great detail module.

One of the best videogame experience of my life, knowing that I'm 36 years old and that I started on Philips Videopac with a roughly 15*15 pixels plane flying in infinite loops from right to left while trying to throw another pixel at one submarine going in infinite loops from left to right.
You can imagine how I enjoy this unbelievable MiG-21b mod.
This is like a dream come true, the flight feeling, the beauty of the plane and the different skins, the loadouts, the cockpit...
The 180 pages pdf doc alone is ♥♥♥♥ing great !
Worth every penny, not on sale included.
Please Leatherneck Simulations, make other jet fighters for DCS and thank you for this masterpiece.

Visuals: 10/10
SFX: 9/10
Realism: 10/10
Missions and campaign: 8/10
Highli recommended, worth every penny.

An amazing DLC for DCS World. It comes with a great looking manual with good content, tutorial missions, campaign and so on. The plane is one of the most realistic simulations I have played, and is fun to fly. Whats not to like when the engine stalls and you need to try and restart it while the nose is facing the ground in supersonic speeds. They have modelled almost everything in the cockpit and made it functional. Visuals are amazing.

Probably the most fun airplane in DCS to fly.
Compare driving a Ferrari to an Off-road bike. The mig-21 has the speed of the ferrari but flies like the off-road bike, dirty as f*k

Everything breaks, like everything.
- Forgot to retract landings lights? Gone
- Land too fast? Tires gone
- Negative G's? Engine Gone
- Spinn this little b*tch? You will be gone!

No serious, super fun to fly with your mates. Thing does everything but breaks at nothing.

Quick and easy review:

- Probably the most detailed aircraft yet.
- The cockpit :3
- Realism is extreme here
- You can drink vodka from the radar
- Native russian cockpit with 3 language conversions
- "If you encounter a problem, kill the engine and leave the aircraft".

- The training session is annoying, you learn more things by reading the manual
- Sometimes switches don't work properly (too much stuff for a single plane maybe)...

A damn good plane. Again, the price doesn't bring justice to the whole thing: you get the aircraft, a whole new campaign, a manual, four different skins and hundreds of hours to spend trying to fly this puppy.
I fell in love with the design of the cockpit, you should too.
A must-have for any DCS addict!
