February 2

Act2: Monday 8 Feb!

Tiny announcement and will certainly blow the trumpet louder later in the week.

Act 2 is a few bugfixes away from releasable. Got some gamebreakers to fix this evening, then will distribute beta builds for one last round of testing.

8 Feb is probably further away than needed, but since my ability to predict development times suck, methinks it's safer that way.

Very excited to hear what people make of act 2. It's a very in-between sort of episode, with some of it being info-dumpy and set-up for act 3. But there still are a few exciting moments in there and the production values have gone up a notch or two. Also, the addition of the world map and ability to choose destinations some will enjoy.

Anyway, watch this space for the release announcement!

A very creative studio needs help!

Not a Maker's Eden post. (plan is to aim to roll out act 2 on Sunday, incidentally)

It's about a studio called Arcen that's in some trouble. The reason I would post about this one in particular is that it's a studio that consistently tries new things and does interesting things. The medium as a whole NEEDS studios like them.

Their output might not always be for everyone, but their creativity and ambition is what has kept them one of my favourite game developers over the years.

The blog post.

What can we do?

Well, if you all bought some Arcen titles on Steam or elsewhere, this would already help immensely. Also, spread the word!

Their games

Some of my favourites are: The Last Federation, Bionic Dues and the new one, Starward Rogue.

The Maker's Eden is a first-person hypertext adventure game presented in the style of a motion comic. You play a character trying to discover what their predefined purpose is, in a science fiction/noir inspired world filled with androids, flying cars and an early 20th century vibe.

IMPORTANT:
This is a 3-act episodic game. The purchase is for all 3 acts, of which act 1 is ready to be played right now. During the preparation of acts 2 and 3, we will also be releasing little mini-episodes every month that provide additional flavour and backstory to the world we have created.

Has trading cards!

This game is a fraud. One half hour chapter was released a year and a half ago.

Buyer beware.

The game has been abandoned and the forum moderators are deleting all comments and submissions reflecting that information.

The last developer update was in July 2015. None of the developers (if there are any left) work on this game full time. In the previous May 2015 update, the developer claimed to be working on it occasionally after his/her day job. If you follow any of the developers/developer teams on social media, you'll find that none of them are actually doing anything related to the game.

It should have been put on Early Access instead of the regular store.

Q:
WHAT'S THE WORST THAT COULD HAPPEN WHEN BUYING AN UNFINISHED 3 PART EPISODIC INDIE GAME FOR ALMOST $10?
A:
THE DEVs COULD RELEASE 1 SUPER SHORT EPISODE THEN ABANDONED THE GAME FOR 1 1/2 YEARS & RUN OFF W/YOUR MONEY.

After playing the super short, but highly stylized demo I was sold. The futuristic film noir vibe was right up my alley. The illustrations were futuristic & mysteriously beautiful, yet somber. The storyline was intriguing enough to hold my attention from interesting puzzle to puzzle. The writing, acceptable & the last few puzzles all seemed very promissing... Like there would be so much more in the full game. So I chalked the super short demo up to the Devs not wanting to ruin the story's mystique & I immediately purchased the game.

I justified spending $10 on an unfinished indie game because of the promise of 3 full episodes & that seemed worth at the time. Well, it doesn't anymore because the damn game has been practically abandoned & some highly suspect things have been going on involving all comments mentioning or asking 'why it's taking so long' or 'we haven't gotten our money's worth' and 'are the other episodes ever even going to be released!!?' are all being deleted on forums & all social networking sites. #TryingToHideSomethingMuchGuys?? You know the truth & the truth is you got your money & now you don't give a sh*t about your customers. You're never going to have anyone trust you to make another game. No one will buy the lie again. You can't be big time if you cheat your key demographic.

WHERE THE HELL IS THE REST OF THE GAME!!? IT'S BEEN OVER 1 1/2 YEARS!!
IF YOU TAKE MY MONEY, THEN YOU'D BETTER DELIVER W/THE AGREED UPON PRODUCT.

Most unprofessional indie developers EVER. 1 1/2 years later & NOT EVEN EPISODE 2 let alone all 3 episodes!!? Are you kidding me!!? Just give up now, just quit trying to make games & just go get a job cleaning the toilets at a cut-rate seafood buffet truckstop type dump on the side of the road or something because that's the only job I'd trust you with: the sh*tty kind that doesn't require any dedication or skill, doesn't make very much money & but also doesn't have anyone relying on you to complete your task. No deadlines, just excrement encased pipelines.

The only news provided in the last 2 months is a couple concept (not even finished) pictures of an alleged scene from a phantom 2nd episode but still no projected release date.

WHAT IMPRESSIVE PROGRESS!! GLAD I'VE HAD TO WAIT SO LONG FOR NUTHIN'!!
*sarcasm detected*

Welp, I give up. This game is a joke without a punchline & I feel completely cheated. You had to take an amazing concept that everyone supported & rooted for & then just bail on it & run off with your supporters money all while leaving them hanging. What unprofessionalism. Seriously. I feel cheated.

I WILL NEVER SUPPORT ANY OF THESE DEVS OTHER PROJECTS IN THE FUTURE.

Seems like the developers had an idea about a world full of human-shaped androids (which is not so bad) but lack the time and resources to actually work on it. If the art and soundtrack is appealing to you, maybe you should buy it and wait to see whether there would even be a sequel. But considering how unpolished the plot and dialogues in this game is, I doubt act 2 is getting any better.

Decently well-made for just one act, thus far. The music is great, gives it that authentic noir feeling. Not much in the way of puzzles, and I can see more happening in the later acts, but it can take a second to figure out exactly what you need to do next. A nice touch, since nothing should be overly easy.

The dialogue and story can be a bit hard to follow at first, due to the nature of the protagonist, but as you start to identify with them, it picks up fairly well. No in-game volume slider, but that can usually be adjusted computer-side.

All-in-all, looking forward to seeing more of this game, and perhaps even more of the developer. I wouldn't mind seing a full series based on this game's lore, or perhaps multiple different series. :)
