About This Game

Fancy Skulls is a challenging first person shooter with procedural generation, permanent death and distinct art style.
Intense and tactical combat, unique weapon mods and items that change the way you play.

Foes different not only in visual design but also in their behavior. For example there is an enemy that will teleport every time you hit it, or enemy that leaves bombs that home on you, but you can shoot those bombs to use them against it.

Usable items and power ups, like friendly sentry, an eye that lets you transmute items, kite that lets you fly, matchbox that ignites all foes around you, and much more!

Each weapon is different from another, and every weapon can be modded with options that provide interesting game experiences like "walk backwards to get ammo", "12 hits with no misses give you money", "last two bullets in a magazine do double damage", "don't spend ammo while in the air", "shoot lightning bolts with shotgun".

If you ever wanted a 3D Unity stylized Birth of Isaac rogue-like with the vaguest hint of Doom hallways.... you'd still probably be better off getting a more completed game. Fancy Skulls has its moments, so it's not hard to see the appeal, but it's missing a little too much to make it truly enjoyable. A map in progress or a mini-screen to show you where enemies are in relation to you, or even just a clearer idea of location would make it a lot better. Alas, it looks doomed to stay as is. Plus side: All black, very random. Down side: Random to the point of nearly pointless, too angular/blocky for personal tastes, ymmv.

Product received for free
*I got this game for free, but that does NOT alter my opinion*
Despite the feel being quite... SIMILAR to other randomly generated FPS games, it still holds on its own and is quite fun.
The art style/enemy design is nothing special, but it's still fun and okay in some places. Even though enemy designs don't really change.
Gameplay is nice and fluid, and makes for a great time waster.
My main problems are that it's in developer hell, it needs more music, and more enemies.
I reccomend when it's on sale bby
That would be nice for the rice of my mice

Very simple, both very easy and incredibly challenging depending on what you want to achieve. The aesthetics are beautiful and there a lots of nice touches.

However, like most early access games this one seems to have been abandoned. Plenty of potential here, but it's not going anywhere soon.

This game should be sold for no more than $1 as it stands. The $9 price tag is a bit insulting for something I have beaten multiple times in less than 2 hours of gameplay.

It's kind of funny, when I played the game I had always thought that it felt empty. Now I know why. It's early access. This isn't the full game. When I got the game, I didn't realize it was early access and was thouroghly convinced it was the end product. Too bad, because this game has so much potential.
It's pretty fun, but easy. I beat the game very quick, and unlocked all the charactors.
This game could be really great, but it just has an immence feeling of emptyness.

Picked this up during the steam sale, there's an okay base game there but overall I cannot recommend it as it seems development is dead and what remains is simply incomplete.

Pros:

- Non-abrasive ambient music
- Resounding when you get a 'headshot'
- Art looks nice

Cons:

- Developer left this game to die
- All enemies look the same as levels progress; it feels like they just get faster
- Optional rooms with monsters that one-bang you, but the game doesn't make this clear.
- All guns that are not the stock revolver are superfluous and don't really add anything to gameplay
- Shops are expensive and anything but damage mods for your revolver are a waste
- Game takes ~30m to complete a successful run
- Powerups take you from good to hella OP by level 5 or so
- Every floor feels the same, skip the instakill room and find the portal
- No bosses
- No different classes

This game is not that big so i will make this fast. Fancy Skulls is a sorta Binding of Issac thing it has 9 floors of enemies each floor randomized with diffrent combinations of structure and enemies. It is in first person with very simple block sort of minecraft looking visuals. (nothing wrong with that by the way) It's combat is very well made along with the handful of weapons and weapon mods you can buy in a shop that you get coins with around the game and its diffrent levels. The game has alot of diffrent items and passive enhancers as well as power eyes which use mana and do something special.

Thats all of the positives now we move to the negetives.

Sadly during the time as i make this review their has not been a update since april of 2015 and the game is not in full release. After awhile you will get bored with the same things and their are no bosses just the same enemies and once you beat the final 9th floor your met with a boring "You have escaped!" image and thats it. Their are diffrent "game modes" in the game but they just diffrent echancers like one were you have one of those power eyes right off the beginning called "random eye" and the game right now is 9$ and its really not worth that much so if you really want it wait for a steam sale or just get it with a random bundle.

Over all i give it a 6/10 "It's a good idea left behind but still worth it in a sale or a bundle."

At the moment, it looks like the creator of Fancy Skulls has jumped ship, so I'm left reviewing an incomplete game. That's the danger of Early Access, though in some cases even an incomplete game can be worth your time. This one has all the parts of a worthy offering, but sadly just isn't polished enough to make the cut.

I'll be honest, I don't know what the titular Fancy Skulls are. The game is a roguelike FPS that plays out over nine levels of randomly-generated perfectly square rooms. Many of these rooms are populated by very angry art installations that try very hard to kill you. I'm only half-kidding... the game is supposed to take place in some kind of museum. In any event, you'll be circle-strafing plenty of modern art creations with your trusty revolver and secondary weapon (if you find one). There are flamethrowers, SMGs, mortars, cannons, and ray guns that I've found so far, and each is pretty unique in its operation.

You'll find coins to buy upgrades or gamble with, keys to open chests, personal upgrades, and eyes that give powerful abilities on long cooldowns. Your weapons can be upgraded to an impressive degree... on my last run, my revolver became a single-shot insta-killer with no reloads. The assortment of enemies can prove quite difficult until you learn how they operate, but once you're familiar with their patterns much of the challenge disappears. You earn up to three "crowns" per room, one for taking no damage, one for missing no shots, and one for clearing out enemies quickly. These seem to serve no purpose, but there is one room per level where you MUST earn all three or die instantly, which I started skipping because they're the quickest way to end a promising run and they have no real benefit.

The atmosphere is subdued and creepy, but honestly the game looks more like a lot of placeholders than a fully realized artistic vision. And that's what kills Fancy Skulls for me, it's very conspicuously unfinished. There aren't enough enemies or room varieties to carry more than an hour or two of runs. The nine levels end with a single splash screen. Stacked up against the likes of Ziggurat or Eldritch, Fancy Skulls just doesn't offer enough. I'd love to see some more work put into it because there's definitely a lot of promise here, but until it's realized I can't say it's worth your time.

This has somehow become my go-to game when I just want to zone out.

I keep coming back to it, and am enjoying almost every aspect of the game.

The gameplay is extremely solid, movement is fluid and the gunplay is very well done.
The achievements add an extra layer of fun, as they bring new game modes and add some good challenge (if you are a masochist like myself). This is probably the only game in my library that I am really trying to 100%.
The visuals are right up my alley, as I like the minimalist look, and as a bonus, the game can run well on pretty much anything. The sound is also pretty decent, although the music could be better.
Weapons and items are very varied, and each serve a purpose, making it fun to play with different (although random) builds.
The randomness is a double-edged sword, as the game can be very unfair sometimes and the odds can stack against you very fast (having difficult enemies and a layout that requires you to clear 5-6 rooms at level 1 make getting through the game without taking damage nearly impossible). This does, though, hold true for most procedural games.
There are also some visual bugs, especially at the later stages, with missing textures, flickering and even invisible obstacles.
As the game is in early access, I expect these will be worked out at some point, and they don't really take too much away from the game as they are.

All in all, a very fun (and, if you chase all the achievements, quite challenging) game. Perfect to sink a few minutes in every now and then.

EDIT: Finally, after more than 40 hours in the game, I have all the achievements! All I can say, Dark Souls was a breeze compared to this. :)

5.3/10 - Basic, Hard and Borderline

This game is really hard. I constantly die. The fps mechanics feel pretty good, aiming your revolver is a little difficult since the maps are so small. Main complaint is that the world is so empty.. just a few monsters and yourself. It gets boring quick, especially when you die.

Worth $3

These impressions were written in October:
---
Between Paranautical Activity, Tower of Guns, and Fancy Skulls, it seems like the roguelike first person shooter is in vogue right now. While Paranautical Activity and Tower of Guns embrace over-the-top white-knuckle mayhem, Fancy Skulls stands out due to its abstract style and measured, more strategic gameplay.

The first aspect that stands out is the game's surreal visuals. Activate one of its randomized rooms and deformed multi-eyed...things emerge from their spawn points to attack: flying projectile-firing skulls, red-clawed melee chargers, bomb-spewing white stalks that aimlessly lurch around, spindly cyclopean turrets, and more. Each new enemy is a new learning experience: how does it behave, does it move or is it stationary, and most importantly, where is its weak point. Every enemy has a weak point somewhere on its body, some obvious, some more concealed or only visible at certain intervals; a few shots in this vulnerable area will kill an enemy and this element, combined with your limited ammo, totally alters the pacing compared to other FPS roguelikes. While in other games, you can fire wildly at enemies, here you'll survive longer by making your shots count and taking the time to aim carefully.

Further adding to Fancy Skull's strategic gameplay are the items and upgrades you can acquire. Like the enemies, you won't know what an item will do until you use it. From allowing you to hover and double jump to performing a fiery melee slam to slowing time, items are varied and completely change your strategy. Items require mana to use, so you can't spam these special abilities. Weapon upgrades can be bought from vendors found on each floor and imbue your guns with game changing abilities such as fire or explosive rounds to making ammo not count while airborne. The game's seven weapons range from your starting revolver to a shotgun and raygun to a rocket launcher and each feels different. (And yes you can rocket-jump.) You can only carry four guns at a time so choose wisely.

Fancy Skulls combines the FPS roguelike genre with mystery, strategy, and minimalist visuals.
---
Since then, the game has been updated with new enemies, new items, new weapon mods, new level layouts, unlockable playstyle modifiers, in-game achievements/challenges, with more to come

Many Roguelite Shooters seem almost like Bullet-Hells and put the player in a situation where they need to dodge a constant barrage of shots while shooting in the general direction of the enemy. You could certainly play Fancy Skulls the same way, but you'll find that the game will reward you for taking your time to line up your shot and hit the enemy in its weak spot.

There are many different passive and active items as well as weapon mods which change how you play the game too, which gives the game a ton of reason to keep replaying it.

I've been playing the game for 5 or so months now and it's recieved a ton of updates, each one either increasing the difficulty, or broadening the scope of the game by adding new enemies, items, or mods. Don't be turned off by the Early Access status. This game feels very much complete as is, and it will only get better over time. It's definitely worth the price, and definitely worth your time.

To be succinct, this is the FPS dungeon crawler that I've always wanted.

Fancy Skulls is stylish, atmospheric and an overall enjoyable experience. Combat is slick, the exploration is straight-forward—not as much backtracking a la Heavy Bullets, which for all intents are purposes, is also good shooter— and the enemies are just too damn cool for their own good.

The rooms are randomly generated, with unique adversaries whom can be summoned at the player's will, introducing an element of strategy to your spelunking, and good performance is rewarded, which is good because the game gets challenging in the last half, though an end game boss is conspicuously absent.

My only complaint is that the game could use more variety of rooms. Maybe some different layouts that can be generated on each level, or even a randomized layout for each room? More challenge rooms would be great in the final version, as well. Maybe a boss? Regardless, the different weapon upgrades and abilities are just enough to keep the game fresh and entertaining.

Fancy Skulls is well worth the price of admission. I cannot wait for the completed version.

Fancy Skulls is a fast paced, rogue-like FPS that rewards quick trigger fingers and reaction times. Thanks to it's specific use of colour and strange art style, the game immediately differentiates exactly what is an enemy and what is simply a creepy, threatening tree. Even in it's early state, the addictive "just one more try" mentality is already present. This is definitely a game to keep an eye on through it's development.

Fancy Skulls is an interesting, roguelike first-person shooter set in a mysterious, surreal and ever dangerous labyrinth inhabited by a range of monster eggs which comes alive as the player triggers the room. The first thing which strikes the eye is the unique and very abstract graphics – especially the enemies have a very unique and intriguing design, in fact, they stand out as something which you haven’t seen in any game before.

The game has one, seemingly simple and straightforward goal; complete level 1-9. Without dying, of course. Though, after the first few deaths completing all nine levels and all rooms without dying suddenly appears quite a challenge. And truth be told, it is. The different enemies requires an individual analysis – does it move, if yes, how and where is its weak spot. The latter is not always as obvious as you’d like it to be – something which ultimately forces the player to position themselves to get a clear shot – an act which needs to be done flawlessly as each room locks down until all enemies are cleared. On top of this comes elements such as weapon upgrades and items - all contributing to the strategic gameplay.

Fancy Skulls is truly fancy, and it deserves more recognition than it already has achieved. The game is highly recommended with an interesting gameplay, surreal and abstract graphics and hours of re-playability.

This is a game I didn't know I wanted until I played it.
I recieved this in a pack of games and decided to try it out. It might be because I had no expectations going in, but I found the gameplay absolutly outstanding. It's fast paced, fluid, and difficult.
The simple art aesthetic is generally a big turn off for me in games. My theory having been, "We could pay an artist, or call it retro.. decisions..." But it really works for this game and adds to the charm of the sometimes frenetic experiance.

The fact that it's in early access means it's only going to get better (i HOPE that's what it means). If you're on the fence at all, wait for the actual launch but for me, it's a blast right now.

[TL;DR] Short and sweet, a worthy buy at 50% off or greater.

The simplest explaination doesn't justify how fun it is. It's Binding of Issac meets Doom. Each enemy has a weakspot to find, stuck in each room till you kill all the enemies, random items, unlockable classes via "achievements".

Solid sound design, and large variety of playstyles, but you never get to pick the exact build, just like most roguelikes.

Graphically abstract, if you like that sort of thing. (I certainly do!)

This game is stunning, the art style is beyond what I've seen before and paired with the quick reflexes needed to kill the enemies makes quite a tough rougue-lite?

However, the updates are few and far between, but the game is solid enough on it's own to be considered as a worthy purchase.

Buy it here for a discounted price and to support the devs/child play!
