About This Game

Stained is a side-scrolling, platforming and combat action game set in an ancient, mysterious castle featuring detailed 3D environments with a continually changing game world. Events in Stained are triggered by breaking objects placed in and around the castle, and outcomes are determined by the combination of glass pieces that litter the ground, leading to a variety of experiences. Novel ways to break objects have to be thought of at times, which will keep the player guessing what the next puzzle will be. In any fight in the game victory is usually temporary, as defeated foes may form again, or reassemble to form entirely new ones. The gameplay is fully interactive and physics based – each character’s uncanny abilities have to be kept in mind to think of innovative ways to proceed through the game!

This game just sucks. With the horrible controls I just can't waste time trying to play it. Then if you want to setup your own config on the controller you can't do it in game. You have to go into the files and change it.

The combat sucks, jumping feels very stiff and the game looks pretty bad. Just not worth wasting any time on in my opinion.

I'll come right out and say this game isn't for everyone. As of right now, reviews are mixed. Some of the main cons cited for this game are the poorly responsive controls, clumsy movement and combat, and uninteresting level design. I have to agree that the game suffers from all of these issues. For a platformer, these problems are the kiss of death.

However, as far as platformers go, this one is rather easy and the poor controls and clumsy movement should not impede anyone too much. The level design isn't great; nothing is particularly challenging and puzzles can get boring quickly. It is not for you if you are looking for a challenging, highly polished, or well-designed platforming experience.

It's also somewhat buggy. The game has crashed on me a few times, bosses have glitched out, achievements didn't unlock when they should, certain pickups didn't spawn, and keys have disappeared. Because of the low difficulty and short levels, however, it is not that big of a deal to simply restart the level, although once, I did somehow lose a few levels worth of progress after a crash. Ultimately, the bugginess is a minor nuisance and is easy to shrug off for the mere couple of hours it takes to play the game.

It is not an amazing game as far as any of the above goes. However, its main selling point is aesthetics/atmosphere. The graphics really are lovely, from the environment to the stained glass enemies. The music is primarily atmospheric and isn't bad. The voice acting in the intro kind of sucks (in his defense, I believe he is a non-native English speaker; in which case I think he did pretty decently), but this is the only voice acting in the game. The player animations are a little stiff, too. Still, it is very nice to look at, overall. You will probably find the enemies to be the most (perhaps only) memorable thing about this game.

Ultimately, I would recommend this game to anyone wanting 2-5 hours of casual gameplay. It is good for a leisurely, atmospheric stroll and a little sight-seeing of some unique enemy designs, if you don't mind clumsy controls and a bug every now and then. If you think you can enjoy it for its aesthetic appeal only, then I do recommend it.

Bottom line: Recommend for casual play and for those for whom aesthetics are enough. Not recommended for those wanting serious, challenging, or highly polished gameplay. Would say 6/10 overall, but maybe more if you fall into the former category.

I first played this game on Desura and back then I called it horrible and a confusing mess of a game. Control for your character was terrible. Gamepad support was spotty. The game wanted the player to figure out what every thing did inside the game by trial and error I suppose. I gave it a 3 out of 10 back then.

So they have fixed some things about the game. The gamepad does work now. Although I still find jumping to be imprecise a lot of the time and akward. The game does now explain what you need to do to progress in the game. They do have a demo so you can try before you buy. However I still cannot recommend this game. Its a flawed game and its just not a lot of fun to play.

The animation for your guy is stiff looking. The levels are small and feel like it. The puzzles for extra goodies isnt fun to play at all. The game does look good in some spots however the gameplay is for me dull and boring. Jump on some pads fight some bad guys or a boss continue to the next room. The combat is still boring and stiff looking. There are some more boss fights that you need to use the pads as weapons but again its boring.

Now as you can see I have about 24minutes or so playing the game on steam. Thats because I played it on the Desura side first. I also have to wonder about those 3 reviews of the game. It almost sounds like they played something other then the game I played. Does it look good or very good. Yes however is it fun to play? My answer would be a no.

Not a lot of people have played this game. I can see why. Its not a fun game. Save your money and buy something else with it. Sorry developer I played it and I just didnt care for it back when it came out and I dont like it now.

This is REALLY bad. Controlls are unresponsive and unintuitive both in game and in menus. Jumping mechanics are stiff and worse then Super Mario World (which came out 24 years ago). I wanted to like this after the developer complained about how little publicity this game got but it is simply unfinished and unworthy of any consumer's time and money.

Stained and Bleed (a much better game if you ask me) were some of the first games I voted for on Greenlight. I had previously played Bleed before when it was on Xbox Live Indie Games whereas Stained just looked interesting, which was all I really had to go on when I voted for it. Fast forward about a year when I discover I have a key for Stained when I bought it in a bundle. I install the game and as it turn out, Stained is a pretty bad game.

I'll list the Cons to keep things simple (this game doesn't actually have any Pros I can think of):
- Poor controls. This may be a subjective thing, but the jumping and attacking in this game are really bad. You either have too little or absolutely too much air control, which screws up some of the platforming. You can easily stun-lock enemies by continously hitting them and they can do the same to you
- Bad UI. The entire UI consists of a tiny healthbar in the corner and lines of text that sometimes show up at the bottom of the screen during boss fights.
- Poor controller support. I play with a Xbox 360 controller on my PC whenever I can, you can totally play Stained with one. What you can't do is actually finish the game with one. There are puzzles where you have to use the mouse to proceed and I came across a boss fight where a button on my controller didn't function properly but the keyboard key did.
- Buggy. The game will let you proceed without the proper power-ups making you unable to advance. The game will let you skip levels in the level select menu and then send you back several levels next time you enter the level select menu. There's several more that I can't quite remember. It's a mess.

It's unfortunate, I didn't have high hopes for this game but it's always a bummer when things turn out this way. I advise staying away from this game, even when/if it's on sale.

One of the worst games I have ever played.
This shouldn't even be in early access AND IT'S SOLD AS A COMPLETE GAME.
If I had to describe it with one word I'd say "BROKEN".
I highly recommend it for so-called "♥♥♥♥♥♥ game connoisseurs". Everyone else stay away from this piece of garbage. You have been warned.

I recently bought this game on a half-price sale. I'd had my eye on it since it first crossed my sight some time. It looked interesting, like a 'Metroidvania' type platformer, but I hadn't had the money to throw at it before. Now that I did, I don't really regret buying it. The design of the game is rather charming, but it has some flaws to it.

First, the controls are a little unresponsive, making the first early boss ("Crystal Boss") a bit of a pain to time just right. Later on this dovetailed into some issues with platforming since the jump was a little "floaty" as it felt. However, the ability to just start a room over again if you die . . . infinitely, so it seems, makes it a little less annoying.

Secondly, there seems to be relatively few invincibility frames for you, so an enemy who spawns on top of you can easily kill you before you can kill it due to slow scythe swings. This becomes frustrating right about after the first boss.

Third, the voiceover in the beginning . . . there's something about the way it says some of the words, and how the sentences flow which feel off. It is minor, but I bring it up since it is the first thing which you hear and can grate a bit.

Lastly, there seems to be a few graphical glitches which occur now and then which necessitate reloading the game. It's another minor annoyance to stack onto the others.

I do recommend the game, especially with some of the issues with the release worked out. It's not a truly amazing game, but it is at least atmospheric.

Do not purchase the game!
I just requested a refund for this game, since it has so many flaws.
The Controls ar akward, combat is dull, level design is bad.
And besides - there are even worse problems - the game keeps crashing after solving puzzles. You end up with a black screen every time you close your inventory and there are even some spots, where the game mechanic prevents you (!) from clearing the room.

The game has, on the other hand, charming optics and a beautiful soundtrack, I definitly admit that. But the game itself is so poorly executed, it feels like a pre-pre-alpha version. And so I have to verdict, that purchasing this game is a fraud! Save your money as I trying to get a refund from Steam right now.

Thumbs Up for the stained monsters, the controls feel little awkward in the begining but then I was able to climb and fight preety well. A good indie game overall.

This game has overall a very unique aspect to it. The story, although quite interesting, was not really the main attention grabber. Most of the time I saw myself skipping text because it did not have much that really added to the story. It mostly just introduced where you were going to be playing, talking about the past more often than talking about what is going on. During the puzzle solving which I found to be quite enjoyable, the music was not enough to keep me satisfied. I just wished there were some kind of voice over during the gameplay so I could understand what i was fighting or what I was supposed to do, it also might have added character to the main protaganist that really had nothing about him that stood out.

Breaking stained glass was the most satisfying experience in this game. The sound, look and effect were combined really well! The game looks decent and background tracks does their job pretty well to build up the scene. Controls felt little stiff in the beginning but got used to it in a little while. I faced a problem in the Tower level, had to restart it to get things right. But apparently that’s the level I enjoyed most in the game.

Tangram puzzles were challenging, and most of my time went into solving those puzzles. I wish they could have incorporated couple more levels with tangram puzzles.

There's the potential for a really good game here, but there are just some things that make it woefully inadequate and not quite worth your time.

There's definitely some good stuff here:

- The graphics and castle design, as well as some of the character, enemy and boss designs.
- The story, and hand-drawn 'story segments'.
- The platforming and puzzle elements

There's a lot of stuff that is just bad or half-♥♥♥♥♥:

- The control. Character movement feels terrible and loose.
- Combat is dull and tedius.
- UI and terrible controller support. You can remap controller buttons, but not the directions. Play a platformer with a keyboard is difficult making a controller really preferred, and the absolute pain it is to get decent controls from the game is unfortunate. I ended up having to use JoyToKey to remap the controls to something decent. It shouldn't have been necessary.
- Unclear direction! There's a lot of trial and error required in finding out what you're supposed to do.
- Bugs!! I came across points where enemies that were essential (holding keys required to proceed) wouldn't spawn. I also lost some of my stained glass puzzle pieces between levels making it impossible for me to get certain power ups.

Other things frustrated me as well; the castle looks really awesome and has lots of little areas that make me want to explore. Most of this exploration however leads to the player dying and having to re-do the stage.

What this game really needed was some more play testing from random people in the gaming community. I feel like the developer is looking at their game through rose-tinted glasses which makes it very easy to ignore or put up with a lot of the game's shortcomings.

There's the potential for a good game here. The gimmick is interesting and the plot and graphics seem decent, but it needs a LOT more polish before it's something I can recommend you pay for. I'll likely pick it up again in a few months and see if any of things have improved.

To sum up my feelings for this game, it's just not that fun. Everything seems sub-par. The combat, the platforming, the puzzles. The intro's tutorial asks "do you know how to walk?" and "do you know how to shatter?" But it does not tell you, so I had to quit back to the main menu to enter the customize controls screen to figure out how to shatter.

This is a game that is in dire need of some hand-holding for the first parts of the game to direct players what to do next and how to do it, and then after that take off the training wheels and let them use this new-found knowledge and apply it themselves.

I'm not much for puzzle platformers to begin with so my review may be a tad bias. But I love the Trine series and found that series to be one of the most beautiful series in the genre to date, and loved every minute of those games. This was just a very stale experience overall and I'm a bit disappointed. I'm going to try and press on further to see if things get better, and if my opinion changes I will change my review accordingly, but as of right now first impressions aren't very good.

Since my initial first impressions post I have completed the game.

It's not bad. The game is RealAxis's first title. I encountered a few hiccups along the way. Figuring out how to climb walls with the scythe was tricky. In the I found the best way was to spam jump and attack, not the most graceful method but it worked lol. I got stuck at a boss fight; the boss was supposed to hurl a 2nd projectile at your but it wasn't for some reason. Restarting the level fixed this. Game also crashed one time at the completion of a certain level, but that didn't happen again and it didn't set me back far. There are frequently placed checkpoints. Finally I got a bit stuck looking for a key. Turned it was craftily hidden beneath a chandelier haha.

Anyway the game is short and sweet. My favourite part about it was probably reading the journal entries between each stage. The story that developed was interesting and engaging and each part related to the following stage.

I played for 20 minutes or so until I got to about the third room. Unfortunately I was unable to proceed further through the game because of a seemingly impossible jump even though I tried for 5-10 minutes to figure out what to do. In the end it was my own dumb fault that I got stuck (more on this below).

I like how the game looks. I really enjoyed hand drawn cut scenes.
First impressions:
You get to vandalism an old castle =). Smashing glass objects causes adversaries to spawn, platforms to appear or items to drop. There is even a crafting system which works by putting different shaped pieces of glass together to gain an ability.

I really liked what I saw of the game in the short time that I was able to play. I noticed later that in one of the store page screen shots there is a room that looks just like the room that I got stuck in. In the image a window has been broken which i was unable to break. There was also a platform present which wasn't there for me. I think you are supposed to be able to break that window to make that needed platform appear. But the game just wouldn't let me break it. Anyway turns out I was doing it wrong. I emailed the Developer (thinking it was a bug) who was nice enough to get in touch with me). You actually need to stand in a spot beside the glass not directly beneath in order to be able to break it.

I'm recommending because I liked what I did see and because the game kind of has a unique premise.

Bottom line: Recommend for casual play and for those for whom aesthetics are enough. Not recommended for those wanting serious, challenging, or highly polished gameplay. Would say 6/10 overall, but maybe more if you fall into the former category.

Thumbs Up for the stained monsters, the controls feel little awkward in the begining but then I was able to climb and fight preety well. A good indie game overall.


Positive: Graphics, Sounds and Concept.
Negative: Controls and traps (the boss fights could get annoying)

Stained and Bleed (a much better game if you ask me) were some of the first games I voted for on Greenlight. I had previously played Bleed before when it was on Xbox Live Indie Games whereas Stained just looked interesting, which was all I really had to go on when I voted for it. Fast forward about a year when I discover I have a key for Stained when I bought it in a bundle. I install the game and as it turn out, Stained is a pretty bad game.

I'll list the Cons to keep things simple (this game doesn't actually have any Pros I can think of):
- Poor controls. This may be a subjective thing, but the jumping and attacking in this game are really bad. You either have too little or absolutely too much air control, which screws up some of the platforming. You can easily stun-lock enemies by continously hitting them and they can do the same to you
- Bad UI. The entire UI consists of a tiny healthbar in the corner and lines of text that sometimes show up at the bottom of the screen during boss fights.
- Poor controller support. I play with a Xbox 360 controller on my PC whenever I can, you can totally play Stained with one. What you can't do is actually finish the game with one. There are puzzles where you have to use the mouse to proceed and I came across a boss fight where a button on my controller didn't function properly but the keyboard key did.
- Buggy. The game will let you proceed without the proper power-ups making you unable to advance. The game will let you skip levels in the level select menu and then send you back several levels next time you enter the level select menu. There's several more that I can't quite remember. It's a mess.

It's unfortunate, I didn't have high hopes for this game but it's always a bummer when things turn out this way. I advise staying away from this game, even when/if it's on sale.

This is REALLY bad. Controlls are unresponsive and unintuitive both in game and in menus. Jumping mechanics are stiff and worse then Super Mario World (which came out 24 years ago). I wanted to like this after the developer complained about how little publicity this game got but it is simply unfinished and unworthy of any consumer's time and money.

You need to try this game, it was a fun and interesting experience playing it. You could notice some tiny bugs here and there, mostly with the crystal boss inside his cage, otherwise stained was beautiful and "different" in a good way. A friend of mine mentioned it looking like a cheap trine copy but in my opinion this had nothing to with trine. Colourful enviroments, pretty graphics and the glass theme all around you not to mention variety of monsters and a couple of bosses. Short but fun till the end.

I had a good time overall. While it's pretty clear that this is one of the developer's first game releases, the core concept is interesting and the execution is commendable. The world is polished and detailed, each level is uniquely designed, and the enemies are varied and imaginative. If you're looking for an immersive action platformer, this is one of the better releases to come out of Greenlight.

On the flip side though, as I said before, the fact that this is one of the developer's early efforts is evident. As many people have mentioned, the controls are iffy, and some levels could do with a bit of clarity. Player death can be a hassle (although this is mitigated by a combat reward-based health system) and there is a scattering of minor glitches (though nothing game-breaking.)

But I'd consider it worth chugging through if you're a supporter of worthwhile indie content. With the half-hearted mediocrity that's been flooding Greenlight lately, this kind of thing should be encouraged to rise above the chaff.

Very disappointed. First of all, the game crashes alot when loading levels, which is really annoying. You only have a 50/50 chance of actually getting to the next level. Second the game in genral sucks. Yeah, its as puzzle game, but hey need to work on skelemans attacks. All he does is swing side, then over head. Dont waste your time, or money.

It could be a nice platformer game , if only controls weren't this horrible. I've tried both keyboard and X-Box gamepad, no luck. Your character is practically uncontrollable during jump, especially when you perform running jump. Game isn't optimized for higher screen resolutions. I'm playing at 2560x1440 and interface doesn't scale, font is almost unreadable in menu. After getting to 4th or 5th room (clockwork boss) and dying there for 6-7 times thanks to clunky controls, I've decided to drop this game. I recommend to spend your money on something more polished, do not repeat my mistake by bying this game.

One of the worst games I have ever played.
This shouldn't even be in early access AND IT'S SOLD AS A COMPLETE GAME.
If I had to describe it with one word I'd say "BROKEN".
I highly recommend it for so-called "♥♥♥♥♥♥ game connoisseurs". Everyone else stay away from this piece of garbage. You have been warned.

Do not purchase the game!
I just requested a refund for this game, since it has so many flaws.
The Controls ar akward, combat is dull, level design is bad.
And besides - there are even worse problems - the game keeps crashing after solving puzzles. You end up with a black screen every time you close your inventory and there are even some spots, where the game mechanic prevents you (!) from clearing the room.

The game has, on the other hand, charming optics and a beautiful soundtrack, I definitly admit that. But the game itself is so poorly executed, it feels like a pre-pre-alpha version. And so I have to verdict, that purchasing this game is a fraud! Save your money as I trying to get a refund from Steam right now.

I reccomend this game, it's well writeen and has a good story mode. Gameplay is simple but effective and a challenge to complete.
