Game Character Hub 2.5.0 released!

Hey everybody :)

The RPG Maker Midweek Madness sale is upon us! Also attend the GiveAway event on RPG Maker web!

In addition to great deals, we are pleased to announce that we are publishing a new update for Game Character Hub! This update brings new features which we hope will make editing characters with GCH easier than ever!

This update comes along with a new item set Second Story (released independently) which should be published soon. This set will supply hundreds of new character parts for you to choose from! And we have heard your feedback: you are free to use assets of this new pack in commercial games and without an RPG Maker license or using RPG Maker engine!

Here is a complete list of changes that come in the new update:

  • The Change Grid Size window comes with many more features: you may now insert, duplicate, remove, clear rows columns or frames easily.
  • New pixel selection tools: you may now shrink and grow the pixel selection!
  • Improved the item library installer. Now libraries can install custom character types, animations, generators and frame mapping processes.
  • Many tools now have their own mouse cursors.
  • Made drawing tools simpler to use (removed the confusing feature where you could draw on only specific frames).
  • Improved design of the Item library explorer.
  • Revamped character type editor (custom types may now have an icon).
  • Revamped character animation and frame mapping process editors. The user interface should be easier to handle. You may now import and export character animations or frame mapping processes.
  • Simplified the use of the Color dock widget (the active color is now always the primary color).
  • Lots of changes under the hood, including performance improvements and bug fixes.

Enjoy :)

About This Software

Game Character Hub is the ultimate program for creating and editing 2D game assets. It provides a built-in generator for character and tileset creation. While the program was made to be compatible with RPG Maker XP, VX and VX Ace, the elements found in the program should work with other 2D game engines as well. RPG Maker assets are for RPG Maker use only.

Key Features

With Game Character Hub, you can easily create characters by choosing generator parts provided in the program. Simply select a template, add items and you're done! You can also create your own custom templates and parts. Note that almost the same logic applies to tilesets, so it doesn't necessarily need to be characters!

With Game Character Hub's flexible layering, you can easily customize parts according to your needs; such as changing the opacity, renaming, merging and deleting parts to name a few.

Game Character Hub's Preview window lets you see whats going on without having to stop what you're doing! You can pause the animation and change different settings such as the animation speed, background color and even zoom! You can also set custom animation previews with the Animation Management feature. Useful if you want to see if your Autotiles or Behaviour poses seamlessly transition to one another!

With Game Character Hub's palette editor, it's easier for you to create your own palettes and change values. What's more is that you can generate palette colors from all visible layers or specific ones. Great for finding the colors you need!

Tired of manually merging tile sheets on your own? Game Character Hub has a built in tileset merger to save you the work!

Game Character Hub allows you to easily convert your character assets for different RPG Maker engines.

Other Features Include...

  • Flexible GUI Layout - Change the layout of the program to your liking!
  • Expansive History Window - Easily undo and redo artwork at any point in time during development.

System Requirements

    • OS: Microsoft Windows XP/Vista/7/8/8.1 (32 bit or 64 bit)
    • Processor: Intel® Pentium® 4 2.0 GHz equivalent or faster processor
    • Memory: 256 MB RAM
    • Graphics: 1024x768 or better video resolution in High Color mode
    • Hard Drive: 250 MB available space
    • Sound Card: DirectSound-compatible sound card

I cannot recommend this product ENOUGH. I purchased it alongside RPG Maker VX Ace and it's one of the reasons I've found that software to be so enjoyable (and that's a good product, this just greatly enhances its utility). The sheer amount of freedom and customization it allows in sprite generation and alteration not only kept me interested in sprite creation, but has allowed me to explore animation, tileset, and iconset design. Also, importing images and altering them with the program is as easy as figuring out the pixel size you want them to be.

There are some things that take getting used to, for instance when to use Pixel Selection or Frame Selection for moving pixels between gridlines. Also, learning that you have to overwrite a save when making a Face sprite and setting it into the standard 2 row 4 column sheet layout that RPG Maker VX Ace uses. However, the forum community is very helpful and I've easily gotten my money's worth out of this software.

The program sells itself as an art program that is focused on game asset creation. In terms of the 'artistic creation' part, the controls are clumsy and you are given no real tutorial on how to create a sprite from scratch. In fact the tutorial fails to explain anything about the tools at all. Instead it shows you how to use the pre-existing RPG Maker assets to make a character and manipulate it's position and hue.

I wanted the program to do one simple thing, MSPaint level manipulation with layers. The sprites I make are for RPG Maker VX Ace, and I do enjoy the animation preview. As an external "Character Creator" it works... but as an 'art program' it falls a few feet from the starting line.

So here's the scratch... it's a sprite art engine specialized for the RPG Maker franchise. If you want to get the most out of this product, you need to learn how to use it like any other tool. I'm getting great use out of it personally. It's been a great alternative to photoshop for me. When I wanna make art, I'll use Adobe, sure. But when I want a sprite in the proper proportions for my project, nothing beats game character hub for me.

This is a relatively nice software for creating sprites and things, but it crashes so often just trying to perform simple tasks, or just with no warning at all. I just lost an hour of work because I tried copying and pasting an image from another project(in the same software) It wasn't a size issue or anything it's just a bug; a major bug which should be fixed. I'm currently enraged about the whole crashing thing, so at the moment I really want to say "no' to recommending this software, however, if you caught me at any other time I'd say yes, so that's what I'll put. Seriously though, I should not have to deal with bugs like this from a program that wasn't even free,

This is great for the less than artistic individuals trying to develop a game. It's easy enough to start using in just a few minutes, but can be so much more than just a character maker, it's also a pixel editor.

Would not recommend. Included character creator has more options for RPG Maker VX Ace, additionally functionality doesn't add anything useful for character creation. I did follow the tutorial and tried to get it to do something, but overall found this product lacking.

If you're looking for a character generator, at least for RPG Maker VX Ace, use the one included in the program. This one is inferior.

I thought instead of making each of my 32x64 characters in Photoshop, I could just make different resources and randomly generate my own stuff. Sadly, this only worked with my 32x32 characters. So I had to just stick with making each NPC in photoshop.

This is my first negative review. I paid $15 on something I thought would work. It only works with those default RPGMaker character styles and nothing else.

Just want to point out that in the local files, the .exe file that says "Without Steam" doesn't work unless I turn on Steam. The Irony. Not really that big of a deal but it'll be helpful for me since my school blocks Steam on their network and running the app without steam also uses less battery and resources.

Steam doesn't allow me to be neutral so I have no choice but to put this as "Not Recommended". I will change the review once someone addresses this issue.

I have used Photoshop for my custom spriting and animation, but just got this today and found this to be very much helpful in making my animation aligned properly and framed appropriately (I use RPG maker VX ACE, btw). Before, it didn't look bad when I tested my current custom sprites' movements, but this shows me all the directional movements along side each other in the proper frames and it shown me a big difference in the alignments of my previous sprites. Something I would've never noticed, otherwise! And it updates the preview as you work on it.
I highly recommend this as an addition to sprite animation editing, especially if you want to make custom edits, even if they are not the traditional xp/vx size :) It'll let you know if the current grid sizing isn't optimal for what you have (I had imported a custom sheet and though it just barely worked in game, it wasn't the proper size till I fixed it). I may still use my photoshop program for stuff like scenes, very large stuff or minimal to no animated sprites, but this is my new favorite for most character spriting. I also love the ability to layer clothing, hair and items, separating them individually, this is a plus :D And the price is really great, too. Especially compared to another program here on Steam that does something similar. Fortunately it doesn't matter to me if there's limited resources included as I've got tons I've collected and many I plan to make anyways.

Update (and further/clarification tips): Yes, you can adjust the amount of frames to what you need and create a template for more sprites that work in a "similar" manner, if needed. When adding, it'll ask if you want to scale the frames to match, depending on what it is, you would want to select for it to not match so it'll expand properly. Unless it does match, of course (may have to test variations out to be sure). On some clarifications in my post, when I tested my sprites before using this, I was testing animation in photoshop and using the actual rpg maker vx ace engine to test if the sprite would work correctly in it, which was time consuming and ineffecient in itself, since I have to go between programs. Also when I tried to import my "finished" sprite that was made beforehand, it shown me that the framing size wasn't correct (particularly in the middle column, thus cannot be imported properly, if at all), I had to correct it in photoshop by expanding it with the 32px grid sizing requirement to match the outer two columns. This program is best for those that either has a bunch of resources to import/work with or those who are creating their own templates, etc. Even if something isn't aligned right, it's not that hard to go in and make adjustments, just select the layer and make the adjustments. It's a slight learning curve, but not hard to work out. The other program I saw on Steam, cost over/around $100, so this is a great deal once you know how to work it.

While the software itself and its assets are great, there is a huge problem with the license of its contents.

I purchased this software because it said we could use its results for our 2D games. Unfortunately, and to my knowledge it is still unclear to non-users willing to purchase, the software as of now only authorizes usage of its contents for "RPG Maker".

What does that mean?
It means that you won't be able to use Character Hub production for your 2D Games, not in any way.

At least if you are not a pixel art designer. And if you are a pixel art designer, I wonder what use could be Character Hub to you as you would combine your tiles and sprites on Photoshop for about the same results.

The game descriptiom says that "the elements found in the program should work with other 2D game engines as well." As of now it adds that "RPG Maker assets are for RPG Maker use only". But even some months after, the software only contains assets from RPG Maker! This means that you cannot use it in any game of yours, unless you make a RPG-Maker-RPG. I've googled for other 2D resources for Character Hub to no avail. If you know any legal resource library that we may use for our own games (and not something restrictive like RPG Maker), please tell!

The software should be renamed as "Character Hub for RPG Maker" ; as of now, although a very nicely made software, it ends almost as a scam for programmers willing to use it for their own games. It's very unfortunate as I am sure Character Hub programmer, an indie, has worked on this software, but it needs clarification and efforts to get some license-free resources.

You can add custom resources to this, ignore that other review.
VERY useful program, highly recommended! Very easy to use and there are already tons of 'parts' out there on the net to import for use here. If you liked the demo, this is just a more convenient shined up version of it.

I've only used it for a little over an hour, but it's already been very helpful.
The character generator is great for making XP or VX style sprites with very little work.
It's great for recoloring. The "save as diffferent hues" option is great. It lets you pick
which elements of your sprite get recolored and spits out a bunch of randomly color
sprites. It will also convert from various formats. Sure, converting XP style to VX style
by hand isn't hard, but this just makes it easy and error free.

You can also import parts for the generator. For example, I took the taira accessory from
the VX ACE RTP character generator and imported it in as a library piece. Now I can have a
tiara on any character I create.

With the amount of time and work this tool will save me, it's a great deal. Even at full price.

Very limited.

They created this software, and provided content, but very little, and only for the basic RPG Maker XP & VX / Ace. The users themselvs have to stand for the content being added to it, and it basically puts you back to square one if you can't do sprite work, except, you generally lack the 15 euro you once had.

A lot of people have bought this, and they were hoping and gambling on it supporting the DLC character layouts for characters, but it doesn't, and you have to work around for a while to add the different selections of dlc content, such as the Rural Farm characters.

I personally feel that this is of no help to people who use these DLCs, nor for people that can't do sprite work, because this software if meant to take away that element for you, but it doesn't, and they never update to add new content. All it does is grab 15 euro, and leave you in square one, and gives false hope...

I am dissapointed in this software, and i can generally just say that this is trash in my opinion because they never update and add more content, making it seem like a small project only made for more income.

Generally, unless you will just use this for basic XP / VX / Ace characters, stay away, and if you are prepeared for a limited resource field, or can do sprite work, then i would recommend it, but most isn't, so how can you then recommend it to others?

It is up to you, give it a shot, but you might get shot...

To all people who are commenting recently, this is why i have and remain at a bad review:

Earlier when this came out, it was marketed as a tool for people who couldn't create sprites, and that it would be so good to help you create characters if you didn't want to learn it.
They didn't say that you had to actually know how to create sprites, and that you only had limited resources. That way, all of us who got this when it was marketed wrong felt tricked, because we were promised something that we couldn't use.

"if you are prepeared for a limited resource field, or can do sprite work, then i would recommend it, but most isn't, so how can you then recommend it to others?"

I clearly said that it's up to people themselvs to get it, if they can do sprite work i recommended it, but to those who couldn't, well... So you see, i only gave it a bad review for being wrong marketed, its page have changed info, but it still doesn't answer this review / question, so its still easy for people to fall for the same mistake we did when it launched.

A very Nice tool for creating characters and animated objects and tilests
yeah its not limited to creating characters.
there are pencils and erases in the program so you can draw about anything
Tilest merging exists tho i never tried it.

"16 September new Update!!!
They added a new tool, Character Generator! its pretty cool and can be edited and customized to fit your needs, You can edit the generator's Parameters, Which items it should use, How to set layers and many others ... pretty neat and very useful, Great update "

You can create RPG XP characters and Convert them to work in VX ACE and Vice-versa
The assesst packs are for RPG maker use only.
but you can draw stuff and make characters in other engines.

As long as you're good with the pencil tool you can create limitless types of characters and animations and objects to use in your game.

But sadly the program is limited in-terms of assest packages.
And never got updates or any addings ... sad .. i think the devs gave up on it because not one response so far in the forum.

My advice is to buy it if you REALLY want to make different characters for your RPGMAKER game.
Otherwise wait for sales or another bundle

Good piece of software but very limited. Only has 4 ways with no options of falling down, sleeping, casting etc. I may recommend it if you don't have game maker VX ace but if you do, you can do almost exactly the same on that software which also includes things to make an actual game!

I grabbed the amazing Humble Bundle deal just to get this and believe me, it was the best $12 I ever spent.

Good Points
-Sprites are dead easy to create, and the animated preview window is a godsend.
-I can make decent RPG Maker Ace faces with this programme, unlike the hilariously ugly ones in the default Ace generator.
-Tutorials are easy to follow, although it might take a while to get the hang of Move Pixels and Move Frames.
-Instant hair and clothing recolours in just a few clicks!
-Easy zoom in and out feature, which is essential when you're dealing with tiny sprites.
-Pixel editing feature that allow you to make changes to existing sprites.
-I don't use RPG Maker XP as much, but I've tested the tileset feature and it is serviceable.
-Ability to add your own generator parts and choose the frames needed, although sometimes it doesn't work.
-Developer is constantly upgrading the software and even adding new generator parts (I noticed at least one update since June 2014).
-Runs smooth on my eight-year-old Windows XP laptop.

Not So Good Points
-I wish there were more variety of clothing from different periods, such as modern, futuristic, wild west, noir etc.
-I was disappointed there wasn't a tileset creation feature for Ace.
-Every part of a sprite (hair, cloak, body) has its own layer, and it can be a pain to move each around until they have the correct priority. For instance, it took me ages to have a cloak display properly, with the body section between the cloak and the head section (so that the cloak does not overlap the chin). It can be done. Just takes two minutes of dragging and dropping.

Verdict: Get it! I can never be an artist but this tool allows me to create a decent sprite in five minutes. Valuable money and time saver.

When creating an RPG, one of the most important things are the characters. While RPG making tools often come with their own standard characters, it can really set a game apart if the game uses custom designed characters. But, for those of us like me who lack the ability to create custom character portraits and character sprites, Game Character Hub is a godsend.

Basically, when you start the tool you create a type of character. Then you pick pieces from the proper character type, select them, and shift their order around, until the character looks right. The character (or face portrait) is shown in the lower left-hand corner, so you can quickly see what your result looks like.

Once you have a character, you can export it to use in the game or save the particular character, so you can re-load and edit it later. This is a huge help, in case the character doesn't look exactly right, or if you want to make a similar character later.

And, what if you want a slew of similar characters? Say you want a lot of minor NPCs that look just a bit different? Game Character Hub has you covered there. With one special Export command, you can create dozens or hundreds of characters (or faces) which vary in color (such as hair color, eye color, clothing color), all from a single template. This is a great way to fill in the roster of minor NPCs, very quickly.

Overall, it's an invaluable tool for character creation and I highly recommend it.
