About This Game

You know exactly what you need to do — you can see it shimmering right there in front of you. You can see it while dreaming, too, and the difference has become subtle. Dreams wake into dreams, and people blend in and out: real characters and dream characters, all woven into the same script. Finally, they fade completely, and you're alone in the expanse with the construction. With time, you feel something growing, a pinhole that eventually yawns into a deep ravine of longing. The construction languishes, though the expanse seems indifferent.

One night, in a dream, they appear: things that you clearly could not have conjured on your own. Not snowflakes. Not the self-similar forms of leaves. Not distant planets' erosion networks as viewed through telescopes. Not those things that are beautifully external but lack the signatures of consciousness. These things that appear are ugly and non-procedural: indecipherable transmissions bubbling up through static, faded messages floating in bottles, and charcoal handprints on cave walls. Evidence has reached you through time of unknown duration and distance of unknown magnitude, but stale evidence is still evidence.

Somewhere, across whatever barriers stand between, is an other.

Between is a game for two players linked by a network server. You can play with a friend or find a stranger on the server. There is no single-player mode. (If you must play in the same room as your partner, do not look at your partner's screen — it will spoil the effect of the game.)

  • Controls:
Between is controlled entirely with the keyboard. Use the UP and DOWN arrow keys to navigate menus, SPACE to select menu items, and ESC or Q to back up in the menus. The game explains the rest of the keyboard controls to you as you play.
  • Screen settings:
The game defaults to 640x480 windowed mode. To increase the size of this window, modify the files in the "settings" folder with a text editor (Notepad on Windows, or TextEdit on MacOS X). You can also switch to fullscreen mode by editing "fullscreen.ini" and changing the zero to a one.
  • Credits:
All code, music, graphics, fonts, and animation by Jason Rohrer. The pixel art was made with mtPaint and The GIMP. The SDL Library provides cross-platform screen, sound, and user input. MinGW was used to build the game for Windows.
  • Special thanks:
To Kyle Pulver, Ian Bogost, Anthony Burch, and Matthew Diamond for help with testing.

System Requirements

    • Operating System: Microsoft® Windows® XP
    • Processor: Between runs fine on a 900MHz machine, and should probably run well on even slower machines.
    • Video Card: 3-D card of some kind (most computers have this)
    • Sound: Speakers or headphones
    • Network Connection: Network connection

Between is an interesting experiment designed to test the exploration and communication between two players within a strange and somewhat inchorent landscape. I'm a big fan of Jason Rohrer's designs and this one is no exception, though it's not quite as enjoyable as some of his other offerings. It can be frustrating, and the entire experience is entirely too long, in my opinion, but his designs are usually more about the experience than the gameplay, and, in that, Between delivers.

Interesting, frustrating, and worth the download to experience.

I know this game could've been great, but it just lacks any sort of tutorial. After waiting _forever_ for a "stranger" to join, I am greeted with a red, green, and blue block that I can place. You can make new blocks by using the frame on the part-side, and every time you create it, you go to a different world and get the block. Only problem is you can only have one created block in your inventory, and when you go to a different world (one of three), your tower is gone until you go back to the world. You can't get rid of any blocks you place down, which makes one side of the screen a massive hoarding, and it just gets boring after a while. There is a lot of cool potential for a good, new concept, but it's just not there and there's no explanation of why this is happening. In games like "Canabalt", the no explanation worked, but it just doesn't work here. It was nice to see this game, but the cons outweigh the pros.

Singleplayer / Multiplayer with strangers gameplay:

There is nothing. So either find yourself a friend to play with together or forget about this game. Finding strangers to play with in game that nobody's heard about or don't care, which mean there are 0 players in total, is impossible.

takes a bit of figuring out what to do and if you manage that the gameplay is mega time-consuming and it's not really fun at all

I would like to try this game out, its only playable in co-op though so if any one wants to try it out let me know. The game itself takes less than 5 seconds to download.

A fun idea, I never got the hang of it, but I see what it was going for. I like this Idea maybe someday it will be implemented better. You should still try this game though you might like the "challenge".

Between is beautiful, entertaining and inspiring. It stretches both intellect and emotion, and these elements dovetail beautifully rather than chaffing against each other. Still wondering if games can be art? Here's your answer.

Nice Puzzle game, except the people I'm trying to play with don't really play the game. They just sit there.
