About the Game

Angvik is a platform action game set in a joyful but unforgiving land. The castle has been taken over by a barbarian and no one else has the courage to confront him, so take up your father’s gear and set off on a wondrous journey! And you’re not alone: you’ll find many birds and items to aid you along the way, and you’ll encounter all sorts of creatures to fight as well. But watch your step! You have only one life, so if you die, you stay dead.

Really fun game, you platform along - collecting heaps of items, fighting tons of bad guys and trying not to die.

It also has a really nice art-style and a pleasant soundtrack IMO.

There are light RPG elements in that you essentially pick a class to play and have an inventory of items to manage, most items have low durability and will break before long - you can also augment items with potions and give them different effects.

There's a bird companion who follows you and collects your excess equipment, it also collects any eggs you find - you can hatch them and they will assist you in some way for a short time.

You also only have 1 life during each game and when you die you drop a tomb-stone which acts as a visual checkpoint of how far your previous character (of that class) reached.

Another thing worth mentioning is one of the classes starts off at 1/5 stars and each time you complete the game, you gain a star and the next playthrough will be more difficult - which is great fun.

While the layout of the stages stay the same each playthrough, the location, type and amount of monsters and items are randomised each game - which lends a ton of replay value and keeps it challenging.

There's a lot to like here and for the price, I definitely recommend it to pretty much anyone.

Ever played Rygar? Ghosts & Goblins? Wizards and Warriors? Cave Story? I wanna be the guy? Angvik is an indie platformer that provides some of the gaming goodness that all of the above games contained, but brings with it a couple of nice twists to it's gameplay mechanics. I had the pleasure of playing this game quite a bit before it made it's way to Steam and I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Angvik is more than the sum of it's parts. The best way to describe the gameplay would be to say that it's a mashup of many other platformers. Angvik does however implement it's mechanics in a unique way that feels slightly different from any other game, while boasting it's own unique 8 or 16 bit style. It's not exactly a "metroidvania" styled game, but it does have loot drops and a plethora of items for players to discover and play around with, which isn't bad considering it's not an RPG but rather a full on sidescrolling platformer. The most important part of any platformer is how well it controls and responds. Thankfully, Angvik has fairly user friendly controls that are responsive.

Players will choose from a number of different character classes right at the beginning of the game. These character classes change the gameplay immensely and particularly in the early game. You have your choice of a King, a Lancer, a Shepherd, a Paladin, an Alchemist, a Peasant, or a "Great Guy". Depending on who you choose, you'll start off with different weapons, armors, and items, some of which are very silly, but also very fun to play with. You have a bird companion who also helps you during your travels by collecting and hatching eggs that will spawn other birds who will shield you and attack enemies for you.

The graphics and sound don't immediately look like much but the characters and enemies are quite amusing to look at up close. There's certainly a retro vibe to it all, but if you appreciate older NES, SNES, Genesis, and early PC platformers, then you'll have no problem with Angvik's dated graphic style. The music isn't extremely memorable, but it does provide a filler for the gameplay. Thankfully the music isn't annoying either.

The options menu is a little lackluster, but at least it provides a way to play the game in either windowed or full screen mode. Other options are minimal but you can rebind the controls to your liking and (thankfully) Angvik comes with Gamepad and Controller support which I feel improves the gameplay for those who are not as comfortable playing a platformer with their keyboard alone. On the other hand, the keyboard controls work just fine, so there are no complaints either way.

- Classic Platforming gameplay (see above)
- Gameplay that will remind you of other great classics (but not a clone)
- Responsive controls using either Keyboard or Gamepad
- Multiple classes with unique gameplay styles
- Lots of replay value due to classes and loot drops
- Excellent price! You're actually getting a lot of bang for your buck!

-- The Bad (or so-so) --

- Dated graphics
- Gameplay that will remind you of other great classics (some people don't actually like that sort of thing)
- Minimal options and settings can be off-putting to some gamers.

I definitely recommend Angvik for anyone who enjoys their platformers. You really can't beat the amount of gameplay you're getting at this price of admission.

Good work, considering that game was made by one person.
At the very beginning of game we choose as whom we will play and a way.
It is an action-platformer in which the attention and patience are appreciated. In your stock various armor and the weapon which wear out and break at collision with the enemy. After murder of the enemy is chance of emergence of a new subject. With you your loyal flying friend, he by means of the picked-up eggs for a while will call other flying defender. In general - game looks sweet, and music sounds measuredly and in one rhythm and therefore doesn't become boring.
Before you enter on the second location, you will possibly die a set of times. But having died - interest doesn't vanish because there is a wish to pass and glance that waits further.
Game costs two dollars.
Later, when I will manage to pass further and I will accumulate more experience - I will surely add the review

It's developers like this one here that really make my day when it comes to playing games and buying games on steam. I don't know what it is about Indie games but as soon as the developers start making quality games instead of just rehashing content from prequels or charging over the mark for content that just isn't worth it then you find something worth buying.

That's one of those games, a modest price and some good random fun (literally). There's a random character option that adds a bit of depth along with the somewhat random monster spawns and drops from chests that really make this game fun. It's simple yet not in a bad way, keeps you entertained and has an excellent price as well...what more could I ask for?

Well, I wouldn't say no to some additional content, but I'm by no means asking or demanding it. It's just a game I would like to see more of. And wow, 85Mb for the game... that's tiiiiny.

Definitely worth the 2.50 bucks. It is so happy and beautiful, then you realize you have died 50 times. Would recommend for the asking price. Although, I think workshop support and a level creator would benefit this game very much.
