What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are an independent developer and being on Early Access allows us the chance to earn the trust and support of our community by sharing our progress, intentions, and ideas. Also equally important to us is that we are able to make a game and utilize new technology with and for the community and even other developers. We get the opportunity to create strong relationships with our players and get deeper insight into what they are doing and saying so that we can act on what things actually need to change and look at things from other perspectives.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Very difficult to say, since we are developing an engine, distribution platform for mods, data systems, and the game layer itself. The project is ever evolving, but its likely that the community will decide when they think its "feature complete" to bring it out of EA.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Solely dependent on how far the community sees it going, before we can classify it out of early access. This is one of the biggest issues in developing what we are, vs a traditional game.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Unique terrain generation and manipulation, magic, crafting, cooking, building, farming, and some fairly dumb enemy AI. Only functional on DX11 machines (check graphics cards as well as OS). Also, not currently for sale, while we get closer to releasing openGL.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“There is a lot of discussion among ourselves as devs, and the community. One idea that is currently being taken very seriously, is making the entire project free, and selling aesthetic goods, as a means to allow everyone to enjoy the project, but only getting financial support from people that truly believe in what we are doing.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Data gives insights into what needs to be changed that already exists, however new systems and features can come from us, or be licensed from mods that the community has introduced, which proves valuable and fun to the community.”

Discussion Update - 2/8/201

Hey all, it seems that lots of people are taking bits and pieces of information from different places, so here is a breakdown of something with specifics, so there is not any hearsay involved. Please note, we will update this list as discussions advance a bit further as well.

  • Strongly considering giving TUG away for free, but don't know what that looks like yet
    • monetization for TUG is all about aesthetic, not gated content
    • design and experience are not changing with this consideration
    • game is playable offline and moddable, so not really something that allows for us to gate or control content, since you could just mod around it
    • discussion is needed with community over next year to figure it out.
    • focus on getting into as many hands as possible, both dev and player
  • Mod monetization/support
    • important to give modders a way to earn living from amazing work
    • quality control is first priority, not everyone can just monetize (skyrim fiasco)
    • empowering amazing modders = more amazing mods and support
    • (thoughts) would need to be proven modder, and proven content
    • (thoughts) near professional level quality to be considered
    • how it works unclear, community dialog needed, a year till decision, at least
    • doesn't mean people are paying for every mod
    • NK interested in licensing mods that make TUG better as an experience
    • monetized mods perhaps optional with some aesthetic reward
  • No updates to DX11 TUG, but new engine getting done fast important because...
    • DX11 is limiting who can play
    • OpenGL will be able to reach a great deal more gens of hardware and paves the way for Mac and Linux in the future
    • comes with better performance across the board
    • comes with “new” art style and awesome graphics improvements
    • comes with improvements to dev environment (faster content, better mods)
      • powerful behavior and analytics tools available to all players and modders
      • powerful distribution system to share and distribute work
      • new modding platform with real time debugging
      • new tooling platform with direct engine integration

We will share details of these things over the course of our development, and we are only a few months away from being able to show progress, which we will do as regularly as possible.

About This Game

Note: We have had a great deal of success from the 1.0 version, and the communities feedback has been invaluable. Putting full focus into the completion of ver 2.0, we are taking the project down from steam, until we are prepared for launch in Q4 2016 (winterish). We will be sharing progress of the new engine and TUG ver 2.0, as we get closer to release, so please feel free to follow @nerdkingdom for updates.

The new engine brings significant advances over the current 1.0 version, including:
- access to more generations of hardware,

- super fancy new art
- flexible modding/dev environment
- pretty rad mod distribution system
- data/analytics systems for modders
- logic systems

- 71% less wtf.

Early versions of 2.0 will go to existing TUG users, who will later be able to invite their friends who do not currently have access.

Another early access flop. Should've known better buying early access and from the developer's only game. Shomehow the developers are still hiring, but have stopped development altogether. I wish there was someway to get a portion of the price of an early access game back when developers abandon projects, but I knew it was a risk going in. DO NOT BUY!

Currently very underdeveloped with lots of broken/unfulfilled promises. When I bought this game in 2014, so many great things were promised... enough to make me buy the game to support development. But now, nearly two years later, the game is still just as incomplete and unplayable. There was great potential with their ideas for the game, but with the current state of things, I'm not sure if we will ever see a completed game. Also, there's no point making a "v2.0" when there wasn't even a completed v1.0, It's just bad practice no matter what kind of software it is. Finally, to me, while monetization of aesthetics is better than that of actual content, it still tells me that they are just wanting more money as microtransactions have proven to be far superior to regular methods; microtransactions won't work when people don't even want to play the game in the first place because it barely exists.
tl;dr: Stay far, far away (possibly another galaxy) until they get their act together

Now I'm gonna be honest here: TUG had sooo much potential. When it was first asking for backers on nerdkingdom's website. Me and a couple of friends of mine, had it before it even was on steam. We wanted that money we put in to help go to the development of this game. We all wanted to see it become the next phenomenon of gaming. But instead, we watch it flounder.

My recommendation for the customer:
Save your money for Overwatch or something. Until we see results, my viewpoint doesn't change.

My recommendation for the Developer, NerdKingdom:
Listen to the community. See what you can change. If they want a crafting change, Overhaul it. If they want something removed, do it. If they want something added, do it. Morale, Listen to what your consumers want. You'll appear more friendly and caring to the community.

paid for this game.... never even been able to play with it with my friend since you need a 1000$ gpu to have 60 fps in 1080p , now some years later this game wont make it to full release , instead they will release a 2.0 version free to play ... this is the reason why i will NEVER buy any other in early access they just scam people's money

“We are an independent developer and being on Early Access allows us the chance to earn the trust and support of our community ..."

yeah well gg you lost my trust Nerd Kingdom

These guys represent the epitome of everything that is wrong with Early Access.

Sold us a game on a thousand promises, Delivered on not even 10% of them in two YEARS. Complaints were met with "hey chill buddy it's alright everything is fine guys!". Did not listen to the gaming community with concerns (DX11 *cough*) and suggestions, ends up taking the game off the store, for get this... a complete redesign. Dropping the voxel system (a main component of the game all together). Why???

They also were talking about taking TUG to a F2P model. Which I believe they have given up on at this point. Thankfully. But they still have plans to have microtransactions in game. They want us to call them "pledges".... but we all know these are microtransactions.

The lack of transparency on Steam with these guys is enormous. They pretty much stick to the official site forums and any information we get here trickles in through players.

If TUG ever releases, (which I highly doubt) it will probably have 20% or less of what they originally promised or be crammed in overpriced DLC - no thanks. Already paid for this game, not buying a single ♥♥♥♥ing thing extra.

This game is already dead and it isn't even released yet. What does that say about this Developer? Simply put, this Developer does NOT know what they are doing. The people running this business weren't dropped on their heads, they were thrown.

I will never support another NerdKingdom game in early access or on kickstarter again I suggest you don't either.

UPDATE: They are offering refunds "Maybe". You need to email ino@nerdkingdom.com with a screencap of your purchase and request it manually. They do not guarantee a refund though.. so - there's that.

2 years have passed, not much progress made at all, and now the game is or will be free with plans to remake the entire game from scratch, but way dumbed down and simplified. Apparently they plan on removing voxel / destructible world and allow the game to be played on mobile devices. Way to go dumbass. You couldn't just leave a good game with amazing potential alone and create an entirely new game or something?

I paid full price for a game I will no longer be able to play anymore. I made a request for my very first refund and was denied... go figure.

Old original review:
Tug, in it's really, really early stage in development, is already a really interesting game. Within a 1/2 hour of playing, you'll see how early in development the game is. The scenery is already very impressive though, the quality in graphics is already really nice. The controls are easy and simple to work with and gameplay is pretty good as well. The AI is extremely basic right now though... it's easy to out maneuver the only enemy creatures out there, and they're also easy to kill once you have a weapon. There's a creature in the game in which is very creepy and can scare the pants off of anyone with their screams (I know this because it takes a lot to scare me even slightly), but they seem to be completely harmless. There isn't too much content yet to keep a person busy for a long time like other similar games which are further in development obviously, but there is enough to see and do to keep a person busy for about 10 hours or more depending on play style, and I'm sure as this very young game develops further, we'll see a lot more content making the game all that much better giving us hundreds more hours of content. There's plenty of glitches and occasional crashes here and there as well as the potential to corrupt the save file (unlikely though it did happen to me once while I suicided off a mountain clipping through the terrain upon death and spawning inside the terrain falling and dying again). The crashes are more than tolerable because the game automatically saves all the time and you can also manually save after doing something if you're nervous of a crash, though I kind of wish it had multi save files in case it corrupted itself again.

One thing I will say is you WILL get permanently lost a lot while exploring because there is no compass or map and the foliage and terrain is very thick and difficult to see at a decent range while in the forest. I recommend crafting a bed asap and build towers everywhere around your base to help prevent yourself from getting lost (though you'll likely still get lost anyways if your base is in the forest, lol). The best place to build a base would probably be at the edge of a forest biome near another biome so you have that edge to follow and isn't hidden inside the forest but is near the forest so you can collect all the trees needed.

I paid the full $11 for this game and I have zero regrets so far. The direction the game is going looks great so far, next big update potentially being multiplayer support? The only thing I can suggest is for ppl to research a little more into it before buying so that they're not surprised by how early in development the game is in.

Will update this review as I play it more. Current review is based off of v0.6.5
