What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are an independent developer and being on Early Access allows us the chance to earn the trust and support of our community by sharing our progress, intentions, and ideas. Also equally important to us is that we are able to make a game and utilize new technology with and for the community and even other developers. We get the opportunity to create strong relationships with our players and get deeper insight into what they are doing and saying so that we can act on what things actually need to change and look at things from other perspectives.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Very difficult to say, since we are developing an engine, distribution platform for mods, data systems, and the game layer itself. The project is ever evolving, but its likely that the community will decide when they think its "feature complete" to bring it out of EA.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Solely dependent on how far the community sees it going, before we can classify it out of early access. This is one of the biggest issues in developing what we are, vs a traditional game.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Unique terrain generation and manipulation, magic, crafting, cooking, building, farming, and some fairly dumb enemy AI. Only functional on DX11 machines (check graphics cards as well as OS). Also, not currently for sale, while we get closer to releasing openGL.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“There is a lot of discussion among ourselves as devs, and the community. One idea that is currently being taken very seriously, is making the entire project free, and selling aesthetic goods, as a means to allow everyone to enjoy the project, but only getting financial support from people that truly believe in what we are doing.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Data gives insights into what needs to be changed that already exists, however new systems and features can come from us, or be licensed from mods that the community has introduced, which proves valuable and fun to the community.”

Discussion Update - 2/8/201

Hey all, it seems that lots of people are taking bits and pieces of information from different places, so here is a breakdown of something with specifics, so there is not any hearsay involved. Please note, we will update this list as discussions advance a bit further as well.

  • Strongly considering giving TUG away for free, but don't know what that looks like yet
    • monetization for TUG is all about aesthetic, not gated content
    • design and experience are not changing with this consideration
    • game is playable offline and moddable, so not really something that allows for us to gate or control content, since you could just mod around it
    • discussion is needed with community over next year to figure it out.
    • focus on getting into as many hands as possible, both dev and player
  • Mod monetization/support
    • important to give modders a way to earn living from amazing work
    • quality control is first priority, not everyone can just monetize (skyrim fiasco)
    • empowering amazing modders = more amazing mods and support
    • (thoughts) would need to be proven modder, and proven content
    • (thoughts) near professional level quality to be considered
    • how it works unclear, community dialog needed, a year till decision, at least
    • doesn't mean people are paying for every mod
    • NK interested in licensing mods that make TUG better as an experience
    • monetized mods perhaps optional with some aesthetic reward
  • No updates to DX11 TUG, but new engine getting done fast important because...
    • DX11 is limiting who can play
    • OpenGL will be able to reach a great deal more gens of hardware and paves the way for Mac and Linux in the future
    • comes with better performance across the board
    • comes with “new” art style and awesome graphics improvements
    • comes with improvements to dev environment (faster content, better mods)
      • powerful behavior and analytics tools available to all players and modders
      • powerful distribution system to share and distribute work
      • new modding platform with real time debugging
      • new tooling platform with direct engine integration

We will share details of these things over the course of our development, and we are only a few months away from being able to show progress, which we will do as regularly as possible.

About This Game

Note: We have had a great deal of success from the 1.0 version, and the communities feedback has been invaluable. Putting full focus into the completion of ver 2.0, we are taking the project down from steam, until we are prepared for launch in Q4 2016 (winterish). We will be sharing progress of the new engine and TUG ver 2.0, as we get closer to release, so please feel free to follow @nerdkingdom for updates.

The new engine brings significant advances over the current 1.0 version, including:
- access to more generations of hardware,
- enhanced graphics
- super fancy new art
- flexible modding/dev environment
- pretty rad mod distribution system

- logic systems

- simplified user experience
- 71% less wtf.

Early versions of 2.0 will go to existing TUG users, who will later be able to invite their friends who do not currently have access.

Now I'm gonna be honest here: TUG had sooo much potential. When it was first asking for backers on nerdkingdom's website. Me and a couple of friends of mine, had it before it even was on steam. We wanted that money we put in to help go to the development of this game. We all wanted to see it become the next phenomenon of gaming. But instead, we watch it flounder.

My recommendation for the customer:
Save your money for Overwatch or something. Until we see results, my viewpoint doesn't change.

My recommendation for the Developer, NerdKingdom:
Listen to the community. See what you can change. If they want a crafting change, Overhaul it. If they want something removed, do it. If they want something added, do it. Morale, Listen to what your consumers want. You'll appear more friendly and caring to the community.

TL;DR version: Incomplete - can be played but feels unfinished, and falls far short of the Kickstarter plans. Company has changed funding systems a couple of times and it's doubtful they'll finish the game. PR announcements are very much "please be patient" without stating any specific goals or timelines.

I wanted so much to love this game. I backed it on Kickstarter because of the charming concept video, noted the high hardware requirements (at the time) and made sure, over a year later, that when I bought a new laptop, it had the specs to run TUG. A few months after that, I tracked down my invite key (everyone who'd paid for access, even beta or later, got an alpha access key) and sorted out how to connect through Steam and use the regularly-updated dev version, and... bleh.

Not only are the features I waited for not here, not only does it look like the features I'd love to see won't be included (music, for one), the company is so fraught with changes that it doesn't look like the game will ever be functional as originally advertised.

It's playable now. It's enjoyable now, if you like a particular style of explore-and-build, which I mostly do. Crafting is "unique," which is a euphemism for "we decided to ignore a couple decades' worth of game development and come up with a system that's entirely non-intuitive and also prone to mistakes." (To craft: you place items on the ground, next to each other, and press "G".)

But it's woefully incomplete, and there's no evidence that will ever change; the dev team doesn't seem to have a clear plan, even if they had funding, which is shaky.

What's missing:
* Ladders - a way to change height without elaborate spiral staircases
* Carts - a way to haul stuff other than in a very limited backpack
* Hosted multiplayer - Nerd Kingdom originally planned to host "Survival" (PVP anything goes) and "Adventure" (which most players seem to think means "easy mode") servers; while multiplayer is now possible, there are no dedicated servers
* About half the creatures mentioned in the Kickstarter (to be fair, there were fewer a year ago; progress is being made here)
* Renewable resources - once you've grabbed the axe rocks and cut down wood trees from your local area, they're gone, meaning you really can't build sustainable communities - you have to keep traveling farther for basic supplies
* Compass, or any other reasonable way to find "home" once it's not visible
* Writing, or any other way to leave messages for yourself or other players
* Several types of envronmental blocks and building supplies that are probably planned - lava, water, cloth,
* Many kinds of tools
* Golems (from the kickstarter), other NPCs, deities

When (if?) TUG starts again - it's unavailable for purchase as I write this, which is not a good sign for its long-term success - I recommend checking recent reviews to find out if it's become viable.

While I did not recommend this game I must say this. I continously support the game developers behind a project of this scale. Anyone who hopes for a "finished" product should ignore this game for quite some time. The developers released this game very early to the public in hopes to work along with the playerbase. Unlike most people who chose to buy this game, I bought it specifically for this matter, to give them feedback rather than to play it once, write a hateful review, and call it a scam.

First off, let me tell you that in no way at all has this game been abandoned. They have been working behind the scenes on their new engine to dropkick DirectX 11, and welcome OpenGL for a much larger audience to enjoy. So far it has been pretty vague, but recently Inoritewtf (Developer) has released an EXTREMELY EARLY tech video of the new engine in the works that you can see here -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhpk-B7L5SE (Not even sure if I'm allowed to show that). So far it's not much, but give it some time (A long time) and it may be pretty amazing. As for the release of version 2.0, don't expect it to release anytime soon, my best guess is late 2017/ early 2018 but don't rely on that since i'm not a developer.

Now it's time for some things I was not impressed with. Although I do like this game and the modding possibilities it has, I was not impressed with the gameplay elements. Part of it seemed good, but when several updates were cranked out, it all seemed a bit rushed with a poor look into what would become of that particular feature.

This community just needs to calm down a bit and hold onto their socks for a little while longer. When this new version is out, It will more than likely be a completely different experience, but for now we must deal with this Pre-Alpha version for quite some time. That's all I have to say for now, I will update this review once we are closer to release.

I gotta say, was so ♥♥♥♥ing exited about this game, because they promised SOOOOO much.
The game never even had WATER...and now they make it free to play? WTF is this right?
Another thing is, many people payd for it, and everytime you would play the game, this message would come up '' Game is broken, bla bla bla''.
If you had ask me what this game is now, well, its simple, its a piece of garbage!

paid for this game.... never even been able to play with it with my friend since you need a 1000$ gpu to have 60 fps in 1080p , now some years later this game wont make it to full release , instead they will release a 2.0 version free to play ... this is the reason why i will NEVER buy any other in early access they just scam people's money

I trusted the Yogscast in the decision of buying this game, and now, 3 years later, I didn't get ♥♥♥♥ out of it.
This game had potential. It wasn't just Minecraft, it was "Here, you have to build your ♥♥♥♥ing tools on a rock and figure what makes what instead of being presented with a 3x3 grid where everything was so easy to make.
This flopped just as bad as Yogventures, and I'm still waiting for them to change this. Welp, at least this game isn't buyable anymore unlike the piece of ♥♥♥♥ called Starforge
Just to say, I LOVED the taming mechanics of this game, but thinking about presenting users with microtransactions afer we paid 15$ for it? Are you serious?

This could have been such a nice game. In fact, it had all the potential to stand out. But in the end, it turned into just another game of the cathegory " RIP " .
Updates have been to few, and the recent info to turn this game into free to play, made me loose interrest in it.
Of course, you who will get this game for free, will rejoice , but trust me, in the end you will pay for the right to play it for free.
The developers have to make money, and they had been given plenty from us who bought TUG. But now, they will make money with every bit of code they put in the game. If it's just a skin or a weapon, or whatever. You will have to pay for it.

So for me at least, i find better time consuming games, already in my games library.

such a shame.......

TUG is the epitome of arrogance and developing in an epistimic bubble. What started out with all sorts of ambitions and promises to just get people to pay for the game or support it for a kickstarter was nothing more than a bait and switch intended to create a proof of concept for an angel investor once funds raised prior to that was mismanaged, squandered and dried up.

This is why you do not purchase a game on "potential" or "faith".

And this is before one gets into the poor shape of the game's actual features and development. Just a shame and complete waste on so many levels.

Do not support this game or this company. Steer very VERY far away.

This game was interesting to me when I bought it, It was something I got for my son and I to play together. Now it is a mess of broken promises and soon to be free to play bs. I am working to get this refunded by either steam or by the developers. Even thought i have been told there is no way to refund this blah blah blah, I plan to make it a point to go through every available channel to remedy this. It at this point isnt really about the money. I am just tired of people using the "help fund me and my dream" schtick to steal people money. People are not being held acountable anymore and the stream early access store reflects this.

TL;DR This game sucks, the developers need to pay me. Steam hold these people accountable.

Changing my positive review to a "hate rant" instead,,as they deserve it...
"Played it off steam, hence the low gametime here"

Another classic EA ripoff..
Backed the game from start, gave em my money all was well,,kinda,,slow or no progress and a lot of promises...
Now it's free to play and abandoned,,well it's even not much to play btw,,
It's a fu*cked up goo of faild attempts to create a game.
Dunno why i keep giving my money to opportunist hyenas like these devs.
Well all the names from Nerd is added to the same s.hit list i have on StarForge crew.
Remember these ppls names, never to support any future project they are involved in again!

Not even Free I recommend the download,,waste of time that could be spent on a good game.
