Magicite v2.0 Released!

Magicite v2.0 (Final Update)

Hey all! I know it's been 10 years since the last update but here it is. I went through all of the code and cleaned up a bunch of things, making the game run smoother in both single player and multiplayer. I've also added the final companion unlock as well as a brand new mode!

-Added Madman Mode (Warning: Only for strong-willed Magicite Veterans!)
-Added 4th Age Droid [New Companion]
-Trees/Ores/Bugspots/Itemstands/Enemies/etc. now drop items LOCALLY for every player, lessening the network load a ton and also makes sure everyone gets an equal amount of loot!
-EXP/Gold are also dropped locally as well, making network a lot smoother.
-You can now select your traits rather than having to pray to RNGesus.
-Added various sound effects.
-Added awesome new Inventory/Crafting textures.
-Inventory can be opened with R or TAB keys.
-You can't spam W to skip biomes wtf u cheaters.
-Spirit Race stats have been changed from [HP+5, ATK+15] to [HP+7, ATK+3]
-Optimized networking code a lot more.
-Mysterious Potion now heals for 10 HP, 10 Mana, or just throws a poison vial.
-Big Mysterious Potion now heals for 15 HP, 15 Mana, or just throws a poison vial.
-Laser Crossbow no longer only deals 1 damage.
-Wooden Club now gives 18 ATK.
-Fairies now have 90 hp, 4 atk, and move faster.
-Throwing Axe now deals half damage.
-Flame of Hope now only gives you 1 point to a random stat upon levelling up.

Thank you all so much for the support for my games. Magicite was my very first PC game that I made when I was a junior in college, and I never thought it would achieve such a massive following. It exceeded my wildest dreams and solidified my passion for the world of indie game development.

BUT it also threw me into a crazed depression for quite a bit of time.

This is the final update for Magicite. As a 1 man dev team I need to move on to bigger and better things. It's okay if you hate me for it, and as I've said before on reddit and on Steam, I'll always provide refunds to players who feel that they've been cheated of their money regardless of playtime on Steam. YOU as the player should hold all of the power over us developers, and it is our job to make games that are fun and worth their price tag.

But guys I can't work on this game anymore. I need to grow as a game developer and I need to challenge myself with new ideas. There could be 100 more updates made to Magicite and I could keep refining it into better and better versions of itself, but it would still just be Magicite. I would be miserable. I've learned so much during the past couple of years and I'm itching to flex my programming and art skills a little more. For my sanity, I NEED to pursue my new ambitious ideas.

So I hope for $9.99, $4.99, or whatever you've paid for Magicite, it has been worth it. I've watched tons of your guys' videos on youtube and I've seen the heart-pounding chaotic fun in my dangerous world of Deephaven. I hope these moments hold a special place in your heart, because they certainly do for me.

So really, thank you so much again for your support. I hope to impress all of you with the big projects I have planned in the coming years.

Love,
-Sean

P.S. Please post any new bugs from this update since I'm good at making them. I'll be releasing hotfixes over the next couple of days.

About This Game

Explore, craft, and survive in this Multiplayer RPG Platformer with permanent death! Featuring many Rogue-like elements, Magicite randomly generates each underground dungeon for you and your friends to delve deep into. Chop trees, mine ores, and hunt beasts in order to collect the resources and materials you need to survive the harsh and unforgiving environment. With a ton of character traits, stats, companions, and classes, players will have a different experience each play through! Be prepared to die... A LOT.

Magicite's main influences were Monster Hunter and Spelunky. I loved the resource collection and crafting in Monster Hunter, and of course fighting giant monsters with my friends. Spelunky's brutal yet rewarding platforming was also something that I wanted to capture with Magicite.

Features:
  • Randomly Generated Dungeons - Experience a new dungeon each time you play. Expect tons of trees to chop, ores to mine, plants to harvest, and bugs to catch! Oh and giant monsters.
  • Permanent Death - The game logs all of your stats in a play through, leading the way for achievements and upgrades.
  • Crafting System - Combine any two items to create a new one! For example, Wood + Wood = Plank. There are tons of combinations to discover!
  • Combat System - If you plan on just running in and swinging you sword, you're gonna get wrecked. Take time to craft useful items and examine enemy positioning before executing a well timed attack.
  • Unlockable Races, Hats, & Companions - The more you play, more greater chance you'll unlock awesome new hats with a variety of special effects. Races and Companions can also be unlocked to provide different starting items and stats!
  • Multiplayer - Want to put your friendships to the test? This is the game to do it! Permanent death only occurs when the ENTIRE party has fallen. So if your buddy gets knocked out feel free to run over and help him back up. Or not...

The game itself is fun, but there's a little bit things that quite not right

Personal Rating : Worth to play, Not worth to master
Traditional Rating : 7/10

Magicite is fun! it's a simple game that have a very clear objective from the start
Go to the next dungeon

Not just that, the battle also quite fun and challangeing,
gameplay are eerily similar to Rogue Legacy, but still have different approach.
You get stronger by unlocked new ability, hero, or equipped item. Then the problem appears :

Cons
- The unlockables are generately random, for example :
"Defeat Boss X and have 20% chance to unlocked this maybe awesome guy"
getting to the Boss level and defeat him is already hard enough for a rogue-like game, adding the % chance just made us think it's a waste of time mastering the game itself.

- Stats Upgrade also random, yes it makes every run is different and unique, but it also make every "bad luck stat" is annoying.

- Item combination is a tough one, there's no recipe information whatsoever, maybe you can get along with some of the item combination after 20-30 runs. And there's no different window for combining, it's in your inventory, drag and drop to another item to combine, accident click are common.

- Inventory is a mess, it's hard to slice up items if you need some. Left-click to hold the item, Right-click to divide it in half, what if I have 40 woods and I only need 2? You guess it, 40:2 = 20, 20:2 = 10, 10:2=5, somehow odd number like 5 get you 3&2, look how much inventory space I needed?.

Pros
Overall, the game are very challangeing and somewhat fun to play because of curiosity to unlock new things. But you need congenital-luck to progress fast in this game.

I loved this game. I really did. Sure, I never managed to complete it but the variety in such a simple game concept made every new round fresh. Tactics developed overtime and honestly this is one of my favourite games.

However, it has always had a history of (mostly funny) glitches. Normally these happen a few districts in so unless you're used to the game, you wouldn't normally experience them and you didn't have them at all in singleplayer. Unfortunately, the final update has ruined this game. The latest update has made it incredibly glitchy. I literally cannot get past district 3. It spawns in both another village and another area, often walling me in so I cannot progress. Furthermore, the inventory sometimes won't open or won't even close once it is open. This makes NPC interaction impossible. Also sometimes when I die the game will revive me for no reason, but keep open the death screen. It then doesn't let me go any further in the game or even exit without Alt-F4 and unless I'm on a server with someone else it doesn't save any progress.

In conclusion: buy this game 6 months ago. Not today. It is literally more broken than Sonic '06.

EDIT: A hotfix was released the day that I reviewed this game. This hotfix has fixed the glitch where I cannot progress pass district 3, and most other glitches have become less common. However, they are still there and continue to make the game frustrating. In multiplayer, sometimes the ground will not spawn in and all I will see is the entities, the characters and black, then I have to wait for one of the people I'm playing with to get to the end of the district for it to spawn me properly.

Magicite might seem like a small, unfun, boring game.
Well its not, its an amazing 2D platformer than can be fun on your own or with friends.
It might seem a little pricey at first, but it really is worth it, trust me.
The times you'll be left laughing, crying or.. smashing your monitor with your keyboard, brings out emotions that no other game would.
Magicite was made by 1 guy, Sean. He has done an amazing job on this game, and he'll do even better in games in the future.
Please consider buying Magicite, you wont regret it.

I just found this little gem of a game and it has taken hold to my thoughts, even as I work away during the day. I Love it when a game does that. It's a roguelike game which is pretty challenging (especially at first) and with tons of charm, not to mention an addictive gameplay loop (recommend reviewing a wiki for crafting guides, just to see what is possible and to help get over that initial learning curve). I'd say if you love games like Spelunky or Rogue Legacy, you owe it to yourself to give this one a try.

Update: The latest update (v2.0 hotfix) seems to have introduced some nasty glitches :( When playing last night, any time I lit a fire all of my controls in the village stopped working except WSAD. Esc out and then resuming the game then allowed me to talk to the villagers again but trying to light another fire to cook food broke my inventory. This happened in every village, something went wrong and all of the menus and controls just stopped working. Now, funny thing is, during this very glitchy playthrough I finished the game for the first time lol :)

I could sit here and list off things that need to be fixed/updated/changed, but unfortunetly, the developer has said that he will no longer be working on this game, ever again. However, I'll go ahead and tell you why you shouldn't buy this game.

-Multiplayer?
You'd have better luck connecting to someone via a potato and a cracked bendy straw. This game does not have proper multiplayer. If you're like me and have not the slightest bit of insight on network programming, you're ♥♥♥♥ out of luck with this. I shouldn't have to look up a "how to" just to play the multiplayer of a game with friends.
-Tutorial?
Not really. Much like the multiplayer aspect, I had to look up a "how to" on... almost everything. From controls, to crafting, to what makes what, etc.. As much as I like games not holding your hand, even Dark Souls taught you the basic controls.
-Story? Character? Setting? Life?
Nope. You're just thrown into a world of caves full of monsters and NPC's that don't have the slightest bit of life to them, or any reason for them to be there other than that they just are. Why are there floating spike boulders and swinging vines holding axe blades? Just 'cause.
-Gameplay? Difficulty?
The inventory is awful. Extremely small, no management options, and, as mentioned before, nothing telling you how to use it. Supplies are frustratingly scarce, requires asinine amounts ingredients to make a thing, and good luck finding/obtaining them. Tired of using a stone pickaxe? Too bad, because now you can only pick caves that only spawn ores that you can't pick with your pickaxe. Have fun trying to get through cave 4 with your stone sword that's nearly broken, because you ain't getting anything better. The game also punishes exploration by having a set time in each cave. Take too much time, and you'll be instakilled by some creature that's twice as fast as you and is pretty much invulnerable. The towns may have something useful, but only if you have the insane amount of gold they want. Everything is randomly generated, btw.
-Music?
Heh, have fun with the 3-4 looping tracks that are in the game.

If you really want this game regardless of what I have to say about it, fine. It's your money. But at least wait for a sale. There's no sense in buying this game for ten dollars.

Magicite is a great game created by Sean Young, a one man developer. At this time, he will no longer post real updates but will be posting hotfixes. He also created roguelands and soon another game, which I've heard will be a mobile RPG game. This game is a Single/Multiplayer 2D sidescrolling roguelike RPG in which you must defeat the scourge, who are basically just creepy purple alien/demons/things. This game has a large learning curve and can be very difficult, so if you don't like difficult games I would not recommend. However, if you like a challenge there is much to be had here. There isn't really an overall goal to the game except to collect all races, hats, and companions which are modifiers to make the game easier or harder. You can unlock about half the content without beating the game, three or four items by beating it, and the other half by beating the game in certain ways (such as without crafting anything). TL;DR: The game is hard but fun.

I see that people are complaining about how he said he has stoped working on the game. If you were an indie developer would you work on the same game forever, never stop updating it? No you would eventually move on to a new game. At least he has the nerve to come out openly and say that he will no longer be updating the game. And if you still hate this game for that, then go and get your free refund for the game. I love magicite and the multiplayer may be glitchy but it is a fun game none the less and if you want to play any kind of game, then don't be lazy go learn how to port forward and play with your friends.

A whole ton of fun to play. With varying and strong gameplay, this rogue-like is definitely worth buying. It is fun, has great art and music, amazing enemy designs and "level design". I love it, and you might, too.

Ahhh Magicite. I love you so much. Fun, unique, challanging, beautiful...

One of my favorite indie games.

Theres just one issue...

The multiplayer might as well not even be a feature. Its so buggy and laggy even with good connections on both sides. Hell, we cant even play on LAN! Thats insane! How does this make any sense? I don't know.

If your looking for a fun singleplayer experience than Magicite is the way to go.
However, if you want to play with friends, save yourself some time and don't even try to.

I'm sorry to give this great game with a lot of potential a downvote but the developers should at least show some respect for the people who bought it and played it.

Latest hotfix ruined the game. Multiplayer upon completion will result in the application not responding. Dev, please look into solving all the glitches/issues before moving on to another game development.
