About This Game

Explore, craft, and survive in this Multiplayer RPG Platformer with permanent death! Featuring many Rogue-like elements, Magicite randomly generates each underground dungeon for you and your friends to delve deep into. Chop trees, mine ores, and hunt beasts in order to collect the resources and materials you need to survive the harsh and unforgiving environment. With a ton of character traits, stats, companions, and classes, players will have a different experience each play through! Be prepared to die... A LOT.

Magicite's main influences were Monster Hunter and Spelunky. I loved the resource collection and crafting in Monster Hunter, and of course fighting giant monsters with my friends. Spelunky's brutal yet rewarding platforming was also something that I wanted to capture with Magicite.

Features:
  • Randomly Generated Dungeons - Experience a new dungeon each time you play. Expect tons of trees to chop, ores to mine, plants to harvest, and bugs to catch! Oh and giant monsters.
  • Permanent Death - The game logs all of your stats in a play through, leading the way for achievements and upgrades.
  • Crafting System - Combine any two items to create a new one! For example, Wood + Wood = Plank. There are tons of combinations to discover!
  • Combat System - If you plan on just running in and swinging you sword, you're gonna get wrecked. Take time to craft useful items and examine enemy positioning before executing a well timed attack.
  • Unlockable Races, Hats, & Companions - The more you play, more greater chance you'll unlock awesome new hats with a variety of special effects. Races and Companions can also be unlocked to provide different starting items and stats!
  • Multiplayer - Want to put your friendships to the test? This is the game to do it! Permanent death only occurs when the ENTIRE party has fallen. So if your buddy gets knocked out feel free to run over and help him back up. Or not...

Game looks amazing, it has survival, is rough on you until you get powerful things, sharp learning curve, even has different races with bonuses and start items, hats which provide bonuses, magical abilities, magic, melee, range, crafting and more things!
Solid 9/10
It's like Terraria and some roguelike had a baby

This game has been out for over an year now, and it still has severe issues with the multiplayer.
Besides being forced to use VPNs like Hamachi and Evolve, the multiplayer simply doesn't work.

There are a whole slew of bugs, such as:
* connectivity issues (extreme lag, monsters teleporting)
* being stuck in a completely black screen after entering a new level
* falling through the world infinitely

This is not an issue with a host's internet connection.
We tried it on a 100 Mbps down / 100 Mbps up network (and many others) and still ran into the same issues.
Many other reviewers have complained about the same thing for quite some time now, and there are no signs that these issues will ever be fixed.
While this game certainly has potential, I can't recommend it to anyone at this state.

Magicite 1.6, which, if I recall correctly is the latest version up until now, was released on February 28, 2015.

It's December right now.

Sadly, I can't say I recommend this game; it's just... Too boring. I should say first that I've played this game for quite a bit of time and had some fun with my friends, but I can't really say I've been enjoying it lately. No updates, slow and RNG-reliant unlocks, no sync between different computers, and the inability to save just make it an off-putting game to play after a while.

Frankly, I think that the game is hard, especially when you first start. There's no guide to help you, nor is there any threshold to keep you safe when you first start a game; it's all randomly generated, which can be a problem. It should be noted that usually you begin with anywhere from 3-6 HP, and most enemies in the starting biome do 1-2 damage.

Even then, a cluttered map due to RNG can take you out quickly in a few hits. I suppose the pause menu (or pressing 'ESC') brings up the controls, but the crafting recipes are all up to you to remember.

There's also no time for newbies to wait either; in the non-town districts, spending more than 5 minutes in there will prompt 5 'Scourge Guardians' to appear, which are basically unkillable enemies which do 9999 damage. Great.

Going back to the crafting recipes, the crafting mechanic is really... boring? Undeveloped? I mean, all you do is combine two things together and you get something else. There's not a lot of variety in what you can craft, at least now, anyway.

Meanwhile, your stats are randomly generated, and usually rerolled when you begin the game until you get a decent start. While it doesn't take too long, it's really an unnecessary time-waste, especially since if you die in that run, restarting gives you the same stats back. If anything, they should have less of an influence in the game.

Another thing to say is that games, especially those which progress pretty far, usually take up to an hour. Between that, there's no ability to save, and even if you do somehow manage to beat the game (which is actually an extremely hard feat the first time you do it, given that most of the good unlockables may be unlocked by beating the game in the first place), there's no telling that you'll unlock something useful. If you leave the game in the middle as well, you won't even unlock anything.

Finally, RNG is too relied upon in the game; many hats give you a % chance to gain an extra stat, all characters, hats and companions have a % chance to whether you'll unlock them (albeit some of them are 100%, but usually those requirements are a pain in the nether-regions to fulfill), the levels themselves are randomly generated, your character's stats and traits are rerolled, and even some of those traits include a % chance for extra resources.

Overall, I would recommend the game, but only if it's on sale. Really, unless you do multiplayer and exploit some glitch to beat the game and unlock a companion called 'Flame of Hope' (which is absurdly OP compared to what you need to do to unlock it), you're not going to have a very fun time with this game because of the difficulty and frustration that comes with it.

First of all, let me specify that I recommend playing this game despite its numerous bugs and despite thinking that the game feels slightly "unfinished". Why do I recommend it, then?

Because played cooperatively, this game can be good fun. This holds provided that you manage to play, that is. With the help of the Hamachi software I am being able to play with a friend (but whenever we tried to play with 3 players we failed, and some other friends are unable to make the game work for some reasons).

It's a roguelike: you create a random character, you progress from one biome to another killing monsters, gathering resources, and crafting objects, and you unlock stuff in the process (new races, new abilities...). It's fun, once you understand what you need to do (like increasing your Dex to use ranged weapones, crafting objects to use magic...). And it's incredibly difficult to finish! The last level is a nightmare...!

Pick it up if discounted, and I hope you'll have fun!

This. Game. Is. So. Great. Sometimes there are issues connecting with multiplayer, but this game is tons of fun. Totally worth it. Best game I've bought on Steam.
