Early Access 9 Released!

Greetings, Patriots! Children of Liberty has been updated to version EX9. This version includes important bug fixes.

Bug Fixes

  • Crouching now properly changes your collider height, and you can’t uncrouch where it would get you stuck (hopefully)
  • Fixed track loss when starting HopToRed on the same frame that HopToBlue ends
  • Fixed corrupted sconces in the Warehouse
  • Fixed not being able to HopToRed while close to a corner but not peeking
Fun News!

A couple weeks ago was the Boston Festival of Indie Games at MIT. If you missed it, you should make sure to go next year. Children of Liberty was on display next to our friends at IndieGameStand and Protobird Games. We had lines to play the game all day long! It was a fantastic experience as always and we made our best looking booth yet, thanks to Michelle bringing a bunch of stuff from her house. Thank you, Michelle!

On the development side of things, a LOT has been happening! We are pleased to announce that we have partnered with Massachusetts Digital Games Institute (MassDigi), a statewide center, designated by the Commonwealth, for academic cooperation, entrepreneurship and economic development across the Massachusetts digital and video games ecosystem. Students in MassDigi have come on board to help develop Children of Liberty. Everybody please join us in welcoming Chenylle, Yuka, and Karen to the team! The three of them will be contributing artwork to the game. On a bit of sad note, Michelle’s time with us is up, and we wish her all the best in her next endeavor. In her place, everyone say hi to Christine! Christine is joining up to help run the Community and marketing side of things. As you can see, our crew is growing, and we have devoted a lot of time to getting everyone integrated. Now that they are, things are going smoothly again, and we’re excited for what lies in store.

In more development news, we have begun work on the next iteration of the Warehouse. This new version is not only more historically accurate to what was on Long Wharf at the time, but also features better pacing to introduce players to the core mechanics of the game. This new version of the warehouse is being designed by our level builder Matt, and will be available in an upcoming update.

As usual, thank you for the incoming bug reports! We’re continuing the clean up the game in preparation for incoming content updates. Thanks to your reports, testing, and dedication (and our current analytics setup), the game is many times more stable than it was at launch. We’ll be implementing even deeper analytics over time to help pinpoint problems in the game and keep cleaning it up as we continue development into 2015.

Thank you again, Patriots, and see you in October for EX10!

Early Access Progress

Want to see where the game is headed? We'll be keeping this Progress Graph up-to-date throughout Early Access. You'll be able to see which levels we're focusing on and how complete they are with each of our four characters!

Current Early Access Status

  • Playable Levels: Warehouse
  • Playable Characters: Joseph
  • Recent Updates: 4/18/2014 - Early Access 1! Children of Liberty is now available on Steam Early Access. This build includes the first playable character, Joseph, and level, the Warehouse, which acts as our tutorial. If you played the game in an earlier form, new features you'll notice are polished animations & textures; Red Line to show where you can run; Blue Line to show where you can hide; enemy AI which will react to your current position and can move between tracks; visible enemy sprites from Front, Side, and Back; new voiceover; and greatly enhanced performance. We are releasing this first build at a slightly lower graphical setting than max to gauge general system compatibility. Expect a greater selection of settings as we update and full video customization by beta!

  • 2.5D Stealth Gameplay: Lurk in the shadows! Children of Liberty features 2D gameplay in a 3D world. Run, jump, and turn along the Red Freedom Trail with smooth and responsive controls; hide, sneak, and lean around corners along the Blue Freedom Trail to gain strategic positioning against Redcoats and attack when the time is right!
  • Traditional Animation: Thousands of frames of hand drawn animation, combined with accurate-to-reality constructed environments and realtime lighting, bring the characters of Children of Liberty to life!
  • Four Playable Characters: By the end of early access, all four characters will be playable. See our Early Access Progress Graph to see how this is going.
  • Multiple OS Compability: Are you an Ubuntu user? Mac OSX? Windows PC Gaming Master Race? We've got you covered! Children of Liberty is already compatible with all 3 major PC operating systems.
  • Community: Want to make money off of showing our game to the world? Go for it! You have our permission to record and monetize Children of Liberty's gameplay on Youtube, Twitch, and other video streaming services.

Incoming Features

  • Four Stories: Whether you're playing as Joseph, the bratty Bostonian with a wooden sword and a double jump; or Ally with a powerful slide and a strategic wall run; or Doug with a stunning ground pound and powerful counter-attack; or Sarah with a penchant for stringing Redcoats up by their ankles via her yoyo; Children of Liberty has something for everyone! Children of Liberty has an all-star voice cast, including Sarah Elmaleh (Gone Home), Sean Chiplock (Freedom Planet), Chris Rando (Dance Central 2), Ashly Burch (Borderlands 2), and more.
  • Historical Accuracy: Historical accuracy is at the forefront of Children of Liberty's narrative. We're specifically leaving the narrative out of Early Access to keep it spoiler-free, but that will all change at launch. Find Codex Pages scattered around the environment to learn more about Colonial Boston. Find other hidden goodies to increase your end-of-level grade. Did you miss something? Go back at any time and try again!
  • Challenge Your Friends: Cloud Saves, Steam Leaderboards*, and a built-in Speedrun Timer give Children of Liberty its competitive element. Replayable Challenge Rooms, based on specific characters and locations, will also hook directly into the leaderboards. We plan to launch one or two Challenge Rooms with the game and more as DLC afterward.

Early Access Review
Children of Liberty has the potential to be one of the most unique games in recent years. The art style is unlike anything I have seen before and reminds me of the awesome Disney movies I watched when I was young.

This game is ALPHA..which makes a "review" quite difficult. With the market changing and more alphas/betas going up for sale, I feel that it is fair to write my opinion on whether or not this is a good purchase.

While the game does not have much content currently, you can see the framework for something amazing being designed. Devs are actively working on the game and recently released an update.

If you want to support the indie scene and enjoy playing Alpha games during development, this is a must buy. I did an interview with the developer which is really informative to the work they do on this game

aug, 20th 2014, ver EX8 (8/5/14)
1. choose 1280 x 720 (unchecked window mode), display not auto centered.
2. got a couple of check points, hit ESC, back to main menu with no continue, load last checkpoint or save game button.

general recommendation :
don't waste your money to buy any game at full price on early access stage. unless you got that from a cheap bundle like i did. you're buying a game to play with it, not to debug it.

I'd consider this game still in early ugly alpha stage.

Early Access Review
- I have a normal PC (I can play DotA 2 on high settings and a lot of games of 2013-2014 on low or medium settings), but the game recommend me low settings. First, I agreed, but after playing tutorial, it says "Victory!", then I waited and happened nothing. Then I quited from the game and entered again (this time I chose low settings). The I complete tutorial again, but the same error. I can't understand what is happened.
- Poor graphics

This game is good looking with its 2.5D style, and great stealth gameplay, wouldn't put it in the hard category but hopefully that will change in the full release, also the game time at the moment is short, as you can see in the graph on the store page, there is only one level with on character, but this is just the begging and if you want to invest in it now and help the game go ahead, there isn't anything bad about the game and i actually had fun playing it for the small time it provided me, will play this more the more they add.
