Hey cool cats,

Big news! STARWHAL is coming out of Early Access and transitioning into the full release very soon!

Full release of STARWHAL on Steam is launching September 29th!
It’s been a while since we started up the Early Access back in February. Thanks to everyone who has been with us since then (and even before!), and everyone who’s joined us for the ride!

  • 1 burrito

Let’s have a look at what’s in the full release:
  • 4 versus game modes

  • AI players
  • 17 song soundtrack
  • 90 costumes
And all this totally new stuff!

  • Customizable match rules
  • Redesigned UI for game status and menus
  • Radical new post FX including bloom, distortion waves, and more
  • Steam trading cards
  • 1 burrito (okay, this one's not new, but don’t fix what ain’t broke)

Shazam!

Thanks so much for everyone who gave us feedback during development - we really appreciate it! The game has grown into something much bigger and better than we anticipated and we couldn’t have done it without you and all our loyal backers on Kickstarter.

Price change
With all these new features, we’ve decided that we’ll be increasing the price to $14.99 for the full release, with a 15% launch sale discount for the first week. For anyone who hasn’t picked the game up yet, you still have until September 29th to buy it at the original $9.99 price!

This release isn't the end! We've already got ideas and plans for post-release content updates that will be totally free. Stay tuned!

Fun game if you're playing with friends (especially friends you just wanna pierce in the heart). Controls take a while to get used to but eventually become second nature. Graphics and special effects are brilliant and the music is pretty upbeat. It lacks online multiplayer but does have in-game ghosts to beat in challenge mode.

What a glorious age we live in, when games like this exist. If you like playing local multiplayer games with friends (Nidhogg, Gang Beasts, Worms, Towerfall), this is a must. LOLs guaranteed.

This is a local multiplayer gem that even your non gaming friends can enjoy. Extremely accessible, great variety in game modes, and gives the feeling that anyone could win. Highly recommended.

I covered it on my show, Fourplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztaAAZGHEaE&list=UUV6O19HPm0AZYjW99uKepog

Great game, great developers.

Met these guys at Evo 2014, they were super cool and everyone had a blast playing the demo.

Bought it for more fun with my friends who didn't go to the convention. I would highly recommend this game on console, or anywhere that you have gamepads and can do multiplayer with your friends locally.

Great game, one of the most fun, and innocently competitive games I've played for a while. Excellent for local multiplayer.

Edit: This game has no online multiplayer because the developers tried to simulate how narwhals actually fight eachother and move through space. This required a large investment in a powerful physics engine that is NOT compatible with online game modes.

Definitely wouldn't be fun to marathon, but it's a cute, casual game for whenever you have company

The game doesn't have online multiplayer support, which may be a problem for some

As someone who has only played the single player challenge modes (I have no friends, so no local co-op), this game is amazing. The challenges are hard enough that they provide entertainment and a challenge, and trying to get whateverthemedalpastgoldis will provide many more hours, yet the game is easy enough that a n00b like me was able to complete all the challenges (medaled, mostly bronze) in just over an hour. Most people are here for the co-op, which I'm sure is spectacular, but the game is fun for just the single player challenges as well.

Plus I made a narwhal that looked like a cat stuck in sushi, what more could you want?!?!?

I got this game during beta and let me tell you: I can't imagine not having this game in my life.

I have played this at parties with my friends, where it is a smashing hit and a great ice-breaker and I have played it by myself with one hand pretending to be a random CPU player and one hand actually trying. My girlfriend loves the game, and it's hard not to! You can dress your narwhal as anything you could want (like jedi knights, burritos, and more!!), and as far as entertainment goes, this game is second to none.

My one request is that later on online playing be incorporated (for all of us who lack frequent human contact).

Buy it now!

I'm a little bias but if you are looking for a unique local multiplayer game and a great time with friends I've heard from others that this is an excellent game to have in your library. Give it a try, you might just like its quirky nature.

Upgrade your existence.

Early Access Review
I'm gonna be frank. I want to love this game, but I hate it. Why? No Online Multiplayer.

That's pretty much -the- reason for every one of the negative reviews you read about this game. Sadly most of them focus on curse words and whining rather than pointing out why this is so truly detrimental to what could have been a new favorite for gamers everywhere.

It has SO much potential to be a super fun party game. Really, it does. But it ultimately fails, because it's for local multiplayer only, which means if you want to play you'll need four controllers for your COMPUTER. This is certainly not the world's most unfathomable setup, but it's about as normal as someone having a full blown flight simulator with an Oculus rift in their basement. Possible? Yes. Common? Absolutely not.

Now to be fair, there are spots in the description that call the game 'local multiplayer', and it doesn't mention 'online' anywhere. But to be honest, if you're planning on buying a game about neon colored cetaceans murdering one another in space, you're probably (like me) not going to read the description in enough detail to recognize the reality. Plus, Steam is built around online multiplayer gaming, leading to the natural assumption that games offered via steam have some form of online gameplay. This sadly culminates in a potentially great game turning into a hugely misleading waste of money. Making matters worse, the game is marketed almost solely around the fact that it's fun to play with friends, furthering the confusion as most PC gamers would never think about playing games with friends while sharing a screen.

I hate having to be so harsh on a game due to one limiting factor, but in Starwhal's case that limiting factor really is the end-all-be-all, and the lack of an online multiplayer is huge. If I could, I'd be requesting a refund from Steam for both my copy and the one I bought for my best friend (who lives several states away and CANNOT play local multiplayer with me). My advice is to save your money and see if the developers ever implement an online multiplayer... until they do, this game is a complete waste of $10 (or in my case $20), and easily the Steam purchase I regret the most.

Major, major disappointment.

I got the game back at FanExpo 2014 for $10 I had very little knowlage of what I was buying. I saw some people playing so I took a risk and bought it. Best risk I've ever taken. I love it. Its fun, and you can use it with smaller children if you get some controllers. Good single player to, Im exited for it to have its full release. Good luck Breakfall mrmeow2000
