Update from Kickstarter about Chromophore (The updated version)

Hey guys!

Here is the dealio with the Mac/Linux/Wii U release. When I developed Two Brothers I did it on the weekends and I worked my butt off making it the best game it could be... and it some regards people love it, in other aspects it fell short in my own expectations due to MY time constraints of developing weekends and night time. Moon Lighting as a game developer is very difficult, and I hadn't imagined anyone would even back Two Brothers!! I am really happy you all did, and I am so grateful.

I made Two Brothers inside of Multimedia Fusion 2... and to be quite honest, it's a terribly buggy program... and this lead to all the issues Two Brothers has in terms of glitches on some machines.

The original plan was to port to Mac and Linux using Anaconda. Which is a great method, but it feels terrible for a game the size of Two Brothers. Some playthroughs can take 20 or so hours, and it's just too much for that engine to handle... so it runs, but it's really slow and just not worth your time.

so here is what I had to do...

Since january I've been remaking the engine inside of Unity and it feels LOADS better. I ported/redesigned the more boring dungeons/ with Tiled and the game is loads more polished. I also added leveling up and other RPG elements that some people desired in the original release.

Because Unity can build to every platform porting the game will be REALLY easy.

Also the engine is mostly done and now I just need to get all the levels in and redo the cutscenes in Unity, which wont take too long since all the dialogue is written and the animations are all there.

It should only be a few more months and will hopefully be out before the end of the fall!!!

A friend of mine is taking over the process of getting the physical rewards out for me and they should go out this month (the ones that still haven't gone out. We had shipped out quite a few but then realized the company who filled our order didn't send the proper amounts and they made our lives hell in making more without us paying them again... but that's a story for another time)

Anyway, you've probably seen that I am working on another game called Y2K.

I want everyone to know that Chromophore release takes priority for ME, personally. I started Two Brothers and I will FINISH IT the way everyone will love it.

So here is the deal with Y2K... Some people (who will go unnamed for a bit) liked my work enough to publish/fund the development of a new game... and that game is Y2K. I was able to leave my terrible animation gig that was 2 hours away from my house, work closer to home, and devote all of my time to game development. Everyone who worked on Two Brothers also got to leave their jobs and they are working on Y2K full time, whereas I am splitting my time between Two Brothers and Y2K.

This was a deal I HAD to take as my mother is extremely ill and me being 2 hours away from her was difficult for her, and terrible for my own mental health... so now I am able to live my dream.

Anyway Chromophore is the updated version of Two Brothers... changed the name because everyone confused it with Brothers:Tale of Two Sons for some reason. Anyway, obviously it's free for everyone who backed us as an update or buys it on steam BEFORE the update comes out... even then the price point will remain the same.

Thanks for your extreme patience and kindness with my Mom and my situation BTW. I am so thankful for everyones outreach and support! Can't wait to get an even better version of the game in to your hands soon!!!

Two Brothers major overhaul

Hey guys!
Quick update on life. My moms treatment is continuing as planned so thanks a lot for all the emails asking how she is doing! She is fighting her best and I am hopeful. Thank you all for your kind words.

So sadly due to the poor nature of the MMF2 engine I used to craft Two Brothers there are a variety of issues on certain hardware.

I've been programming the game from the ground up with a new engine and it plays like a dream. I will be releasing this update for free (obviously) as soon as possible.

I also changed somethings in the engine to make the game better after I read some criticism aside from the glitches in the initial launch. Enemies will be much smarter, the game will have a wide screen option without stretching and some graphic updates have been made from things that always bothered me with the animations. There is no longer the Z sorting issues so no one will stand on anyone else... so that's another fix...

I'm sorry I disappeared! More updates coming soon. I'll also post a trailer that someone cut of the new version and release info next month.

The Linux and Mac versions will come along with this update. Hopefully only a few more weeks til I put this up!

For the tech minded up of you here are some details of what we did. We reprogrammed the engine from the ground up in Unity and imported the maps. So besides remaking the cut-scenes and the engine it wasn't TOO much work so it's been a very realistic task.

Roy Guarder, inventor, scientist, and philosopher, is on an expedition to discover the origins of life. What makes Two Brothers unique:

Two Brothers takes a long hard look at death in video games... when the player is killed in combat or triggers a deadly trap, instead of being greeted a familiar GAMEOVER screen, the player finds himself in what we call the "Afterlife Hub".
This realm of the dead is a colorful and mysterious place where the player can explore, find clues, and interact with characters who have passed on in the games story... sometimes even bringing some of them back from the dead.
When the player wants to return to gameplay, they can jump from the edge of the heavens and get back in to the action and exploration!
This mechanic is vital to the gameplay, as sometimes interacting with the dead is just as important as interacting with the living... this feature often requires the player intentionally ending their session in a game over, just to cross over to the other side.

I may change this to a "yes," but I must bring up something. During a scene in which the Two Brothers meet in a house, there is the Demise of the Ceremony song from Shadow of the Colossus playing. Did the creator have permission to use Kow Otani's composition?

I was so happy about to hear Two Brothers comes out on PC AND on steam but...

Well i didnt know it comes out like "this"

I mean:

-The standart Window (Game size) is not even as big as a Game Boy Sceen! Try that to play that on a HD Screen! (its Hell, trust me)
- In a readme data (kinda), there stands it gives "opinons to change the scaling of the window by pressing 1-9" (or sort of). I did, nothing changed!
- FULLscreen doesnt work! So you "have to" play it in a very f*ckin tiny window! This guys try to get srs if they like to make a retro game i guess...
- You cant control the volume of the sounds AND BELIVE ME! YOU WISH YOU COULD!!
- Also Wierd bugs sometimes that your Character wanders around "Below" the map he should walk on, yea. its like you walked under the map in the underground and the rest flys over you...

Two Brothers, i saw a lot videos and i wished this game WHOULD playble but it cant control the windowsizes and the standart size is nearly impossible to play on, it hurts really in your eyes if you try to long. The Music is really TO LOUD and you cant even change the volume or like and mostly wierd are the bugs in this game, it just ruins the feeling of the maybe good game...

Man i wish the "Game" whould be like the -TRAILERS- they showed.....

Developer just sent an email an email about a completely reworked version of the game. I've played about 30 minutes of the current game and still encounter glitches that make it hard to progress. Also the developer changed the name of the reworked Two Brothers to "Chromophore". The email goes on to say that everyone who backed the kickstarter will get a free version of Chromophore. Doesn't say anything about people who bought the buggy Steam version. So If you bought Two Brothers and can't finish it or progress due to bugs, you'll have to buy Chromophore. I'd rather I didn't waste $10 on a buggy, unplayable game, but I guess I learned my lesson to purchase a game from this developer again. And I'm lucky they decided to re-release the game for free to kickstarter contributers.

I really tried to like this game, retro soundtrack and overall feel; it was great! Then I actually played it...

Controls: Sloppy and not enjoyable.
Graphics: Good, but many glitches in the tiles and a lot of blank areas.
Game-play: Terrible, enemy encounters are boring and the "puzzles" are absurd and not in the good way.

Overall: This game does NOT feel professional and at the list price is extremely disappointing. This game is so bad, I would return it if Steam allowed such nonsense.

The most common concern people have for this game is the game-breaking glitches. Yes, they happen. However, I bring good news. With the current version, I have yet to have a playthrough ruined by a glitch. Granted, it sometimes takes some troubleshooting, but in the end I found it worth it. Nostalgia is an important element in this game, and I feel Two Brothers used it to weave new stories rather than dwell on old ones. If you are really on the fence about this game, I would wait for the Director's Cut of this game to be released. I found the game, as it currently is, to still be immersive and memorable.

Interesting story and concept. I only reached the first boss. The hit box in order to fight it is to small and your's is much larger. You could loss about 3/4 of your heath before even hurting it. Until the hitboxs are updated wait.

Absolutely Terrible.

Combat is really toss of a coin wether you hit the enemies or not despite the animation showing otherwise. And The Puzzles I encountered in my time of playing were not hard, they're just annoying.

I'm glad I didn't really pay for this game, as I got it as part of a humble bundle. I rarely give negative reviews on a game though but this one I am warning: Stay away. If you like old school action adventure games, go back to play them instead. I can alost guarante you'll have a lot more fun.

Two Brothers, in a van. And then a meteor hit, and they ran as fast as they could, from giant cat monsters. And then a giant tornado came, and that's when things got knocked into twelfth gear.

A Mexican armada shows up, with weapons made from t-tomatoes. And you better bet your bottom dollar that these two brothers know how to handle business. IN: ALIEN INVASION TOMATO MONSTER MEXICAN ARMADA BROTHERS WHO ARE JUST REGULAR BROTHERS RUNNING IN A VAN FROM AN ASTEROID AND ALL SORTS OF THINGS THE MOVIE.

Hold on, there's more; old women are coming, and they're also in the movie and they're going to come and cross-attack these two brothers. But let's get back to the brothers because they're-they have a strong bond. You don't wanna know about it here, but I'll tell you one thing - the moon, it comes crashing into Earth. And what do you do then? It's Two Brothers, and it-a-and they're gonna it's called Two Brothers. Two Brothers.

I LOVE the zelda like games, and if they have a Retro-look, even better... but this game, at this moment, is a train wreck. I've played 10 minutes, maybe 15... and after the (failed) tutorial, AT THE FIRST LEVEL... glitch occurs. Not sure what the glitch do, but apparently... i'm flying over an empty map, and I can't get to... well.. any place.

13,99€ for a game we can't play? (yeees, I know, i've bought the game on one of this "Bundles" and payed less but, anyway, payed for it). Sorry, developers, but this is an outright scam.

I've seen videos of lucky people that can play the game, and I love the idea, the graphics and the music BUT... it's a game! We SHOULD be able to play it!

Game looks great but it won't let me play. Says it has complete controller support, nope. I don't usually post reviews but this one kinda ♥♥♥♥ed me off. If I try to resize the screen it freezes and won't play. The default screen size is about an inch by an inch. I can barely read what it's saying and thats if I squint my eyes and get really close. I really want to like this game, but just, no. Sorry.

The tutorial has a room in which a wall simply does not exist, allowing the player to walk through a glitchy out of bounds mess. I have not been able to start up the actual game due to graphical glitches in the menu, and there aren't any settings I can change to fix this. The game, graphically and mechanically, feels as though I'd downloaded a gameboy emulator that happened to lack the features of button config and savestating.
