Save/Load Hotfix Patch!

Sorry for the late announcement, if you didn't catch it, patch went live last week! Here are your notes:

-Single-player and Skirmish matches can now be saved and loaded!
-A warcaster's control range indicator now updates its position when a player is planning a move, allowing the player to preview its range before executing the move.
Balance Changes
-DoomReaver health reduced from 15 health to 13 health.

Fixed Bugs
-Subtitles should now be visible on the map screen between single player missions
-Measuring tool no longer requires tons of mouse clicks to use.
-Alexia's Raise Dead, Boost Damage and Boost Attack abilities no longer considered spells and should not be blocked by abilities that prevent spell casting.
-Depth of Field setting has been fully removed to prevent excessive blur on lights.
-Fixed an issue where the game could get stuck if Karchev's Ground Zero tried to push a unit with no room to move.
-Explosivo can no longer be used with Combined Ranged Attacks.

August New Warrior Unit Patch Update! 8/17/2016

-Twelve new warrior units are now available! 2 For each faction!
-Cygnar extends their ranged advantage with suppressive fire and dual shots from the Long Gunners.
-Cygnar has ordered its Trencher Commandos to slip in and out of the shadows and strike with deadly precision.
-The Widowmakers of Khador have come to counter the long reach of the Motherland's enemies with traps and sniper fire.
-Khador has unleashed its frightening Doomreavers, driven to berserker madness by their cursed Fellblades.
-Daughters of the Flame will now weave and slice unopposed through those who face the Protectorate of Menoth.
-The Choir of Menoth may now sing Menoth's songs to strengthen the warjacks of the Protectorate of Menoth.
-The Pistol Wraiths of Cryx have risen to invoke the chill of death upon the living.
-Cryx now calls upon the Bane Thralls to weaken and crush all life under their axes.
-Boomhower Company Members now join Greygore to fight for the Mercenaries and any Cryx, Khador or Cygnar commander who can afford them.
-Alexia Ciannor, Mistress of the Witchfire will raise the dead to serve the Mercenaries, Cygnar and Khador.
-Those who oppose the Retribution will suffer an endless rain of arrows from their Stormfall Archers.
-The Retribution now send their Souless Escorts to disrupt the sorcery of their mage enemies.
-Casual Quickmatch squads have been updated to include the new warrior units.

Balance Changes
-Rahn's Telekinesis has been split into Telekinesis - Offensive, and Telekinesis - Friendly.
-Double-Handed throw split into "Double-Handed Throw - Targeted" and "Double-Handed Throw - Directional", the earlier being able to target enemy units and the later uses a chosen direction.

Fixed Bugs
-New drop-down menu added to the Unit Browser for faster swapping between factions.
-Single Player missions will now be unlocked upon completing the previous mission, instead of after the new mission is loaded.
-Solved an issue preventing cutscenes from being skipped.
-Units hit with Critical Knockdown and Critical Freeze will no longer remain in the knocked down pose after they thaw and stand up.
-Siege's Mage Sight can no longer be cast outside of Siege's control area.
-The Hydra now correctly gains a free power attack when both its initial melee attacks hit.
-Retribution Chimera warjack is now able to change facing during its apparition movement.
-The Holy Vessel passive on the Avatar of Menoth now sets its maximum focus to 4.
-Retribution Mage Hunter Infiltrator's Slip Strike should now work correctly within the Gorgon's Forcelock.
-Ravyn's Vortex of Destruction visual effect now correctly expires when the spell is not upkept.
-Rahn's Telekinesis can now properly target himself and friendlies using the new 'Telekinesis - Friendly'
-Rhan's Telekinesis can now be properly boosted.
-Rahn's Telekinesis can now be cast on the same unit if the spell previously missed.
-Cryx Reaper Warjack can now properly buy extra melee attacks after using a drag melee attack.

Known Issues
-Spawning Darius's Half Jacks into an Remains-In-Play effect may crash the game or cause a stuck activation. Please avoid spawning Half-Jack within RIP effects.

This game is terrible. I backed this on Kickstarter because I love tactics games but this is just the pits. I have played a couple of matches in the campaign and it's a drag to do this, I will go back and try it again out of pure stubbornness - it can't be as bad as I remember it!? Well, I did this already once after playing while it was in beta and it was atrocious both times. I found it slow, clunky and unrewarding and the voice acting was trite. Avoid like plague bunnies.

I really want to like this game. I backed it on Kickstarter, I enjoy the tabletop version and turn-based squad-based combat is one of my favourite genres. Unfortunately, it's not very good. Not truly horrible, but not good.

The camera has improved with patches, but it's still wonky. Many battlefields have tall structures messing up the camera and you can't zoom far enough out to get a good view. This is one of the main problems with the game.
The UI takes up too much space. Gets worse because of the camera issues.
The character selection process is not intuitive and not very responsive, mostly a problem when units activate out of turn.
The rules are neither transparent enough nor a direct translation of the boardgame. That makes playing the game a tad more confusing than necessary, though it's not a really big deal.
The developers went with a square grid movement system for no fathomable reason, when there are hexes available. Not a big deal at all, but it annoys me.
The AI is stupid. Single-player skirmishes are only worth it as practice runs.
I have severe CTD-troubles. If you're lucky, this is not a problem. For me, the game is not currently playable because of this combined with the next problem... [edit: I have conquered the CTD menace by setting graphics to the lowest setting possible. It works, but you can scratch the below comment about graphics -it has to look like Minecraft if I want to play.] [edit 2: Oh, it's back. Even on lowest settings.]
YOU CAN'T SKIP CUTSCENES! This is unforgivable in any game. [edit: diligent research shows that you can, indeed, partially skip most cutscenes but it's not good enough and the fact that I had to be told on this forum how to do it doesn't help. "Enter" key, if you need to know. Not "Esc", oh no.]
Edit 2: I still haven't figured out how to save during campaign battles, pretty sure it's impossible. For a game with CTD issues and where battles can easily take an hour, this is a problem.

There are good things too: The game looks and feels good, the single-player storyline is OK, there are frequent patches to solve known issues. Unfortunately, it's just not good enough.

If you don't suffer from CTDs it should be OK, but there are better games out there to spend your precious time on. Try it if you like the setting and get it for cheap.

I originally backed this on kickstarter because Privateer Press said they were going to bring the tabletop wargame experience to the video game world. As a long time fan, and former press ganger, nothing has stirred my imagination more than wanting to see these characters, machines, and beasts animated and actually interacting with each other. It does deliver that, to some degree... when it works.

I wanted to enjoy it, I tried to enjoy it. In some respects, I NEEDED to enjoy this, but I can't. It is continually bogged down by constant fatal errors, a conflicting design philosophy, an underutilized graphic engine, and; probably the most heartbreaking downside, a complete lack of soul.

Those of us that saw these problems and were deeply concerned tried to communicate these issues to the devs on the forums were shouted down. Our questions and concerns ignored until we just... gave up. They just don't want to hear it.

This game is not an accurate representation of what many fans would call a Warmachine experience.

It is a somber memorial to what could have been, and I am ashamed that I backed it.

They've lost their god damn minds with this price...
As someone who has the game, let me tell you, it is ABSOLUTELY NOT worth $65 to get in right now. There is 1 map, and 1 list for each of the 4 factions. You get no choices when it comes to building your list. Do yourself a favor and wait for the release, which will be cheaper anyways.

I concur with others that this game is not yet ready for general release. I say shame on whoever decided to declare this release ready.
Yes the campaign is done and combat works, but there are too many pain points to make this game fun yet. I know it is common if not the norm these days to release a game and then spend the next 6 months fixing it, but I don't feel that is right to your customers. I was a kickstarter backer so I understand there will be rough edges during the process, but setting the game for release in this state makes me fear the game will never receive the attention it deserves.
-Camera controls are unintuitive and require constant adjustment.
-Mouse input is erratic.
-Game engine completely stops switching between units. screen freezes breifly and FPS counter will go to zero each time enemy AI units make a move.
-controlling units require too much busy work like changing facing before being allowed to attack a unit instead of just allowing the unit to select between all units in range and just change the facing as appropriate. Doing unit facing changes at the end of each units turn is cumbersome and unnecessary.
The UI currently bogs down the game. Turns feel like they take twice as long as they should because of constant camera angle changes and other control issues. Even something simple like selecting a unit is often unresponsive requiring multiple clicks and hunt for the hotspot.

After playing through the game and observing where it has been going since beta, I can say I would not reccomend this in the state it is currently in, and do not feel it will get to a point where I would in the near future.

For people who enjoy the table top game this game is an awesome idea to experience more story in the Iron Kingdoms, and to play the game in a way that requires less clean up and even try out different factions.

For a project like converting a table top into a PC game, there were of course its share of bugs that would be expected from a relatively new studio. I was perfectly fine with that, they were trying to get the game fully released so all its kickstarter backers could enjoy what they paid for.

Unfortunately, the game ended up feeling hacked together when it was officially "released".

The single player campaign, although it was enjoyable to be given different scenerios to overcome, there were just a lot of things wrong with it. The camera was, and still is pretty unbarable, the UI would not always play nice with the map you were on, and the AI was not very challenging and followed a very specific sequence of moves unless you put a target right in their face.

The cutscenes were something out of a launch Playstation 1 game. Completely still models with the camera panning to whoever was talking, and even then you had a hard time seeing who it was because of the lighting. With how much work that was put into the in game models, you think they could have animated the scenes. That said, the in game models are pretty nice, fans of the table top will appreciate how the characters and warjacks look animated.

The multiplayer was meant to be the bread and butter for this game, a way for people who enjoy the table top, or even new comers, to come press a button and be put into a game of warmachine instantly. The multiplayer feels like its lacking A LOT. Yes you can be matched with another player, most of the time. It is not uncommon for the "quick match" option, to not be quick at all. The multiplayer as a game functions, bugs excluded, but it not very enjoyable because of the problems the overall game has, as well as very simple win conditions.

The UI is just awful. Actions feel unresponsive, it is arranged in an unappealing matter, text can be hard to read, and it difficult to traverse the playing map. Getting information to appear on your spells and abilities usually requires you to click the button for it, thus committing to the action.

The grid system is also not executed as well as it could have. It feels clunky and sometimes even inconsistent.

What is worse about knowing all these things is the price tag that has been on it. The DLC model is also kind of a turn off, especially in the state the game is still in. If the game were in a relatively bugg free state, charging DLC is reasonable.

Developing the DLC seemed to be as high, or perhaps an even higher priority than making the game as functional as it could be.

TLDR: Game is no where near as functional as it should be. UI is unbarable, camera is wonky, gameplay is not strong enough to hold it all up. DLC seems to take a place above fixing bugs and improving overall functionality.

With this game, I tried. Really did. Actions were clunky at times, sure, whatever, I can deal. Units performed completely randomly at times, that was anoying, but in keeping with the tabletop to PC feel of the thing. Not a AAA title, but it never claimed to be. It was building up to a decent game, pieces at a time. There were annoying parts fixed, like global spells lens flare-ing the screen un-playable for a small buff, that were fixed. Generally it looked like a nice game without the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ish nature of some people who shall not be na-*cough*EA*cough*-med.

Then a funny thing happened with the Mercenaries faction. It was originally availiable to play with the standard game. Then it was shoved ceremoniously behind a DLC paywall. Same with the Retribution. And there's so much of it. For the price of the DLC and the game itself, I can put together two, maybe three physical armies on the cheap. Anyone who knows about how expensive miniature wargames are, knows that this is ridiculous.

This could have been a nice cheap entry point to the physical game for some, but it's not anymore. Could have been a nice turn based strategy for others, but with two of the factions locked out of the multiplayer and a bluh campaign, it's not. It could have had a great story for the Iron Kingdoms, a setting oozing with so much badass flowing through it's rivers that even the goblins wear shades and walk calmly away from explosions, but it wasn't. Not the worst story, but could have been better.

Sorry, and this saddens me to say, but I cannot reccomend this game.

tldr; Don't buy it, DLC is too much for too little, doesn't do enough with what it has.

I really want to recommend this game because I'm a huge Warmachine/Hordes tabletop player (I backed the KS), but there is no way $65 is a justified price tag for this game in it's current state. Just to be clear, I do not think the early access is worth the extra money. The UI is unfinished which makes it frustrating to move warrior models around (and the lack of Units in the game makes moving 11 Mechanithralls "solos" a very time consuming process), game breaking bugs abound such as certain knockdown effects not affecting large base targets, some spells are listed on the UI but are not in the game yet, 20 FPS is about the max anyone can seem to get despite current gen computer hardware, and it is generally a painful rather than fun experience at the moment. I will happily create another review when the game is done, but as it stands I cannot recommend this purchase.

One thing I can say about the game in its beta state that will carry over to the final product is that this is *NOT* a clone of the tabletop game. Many spell effects and abilities differ, major effects like Disruption do not function the same, point costs have been changed since everything is now a solo, Warjack systems have been removed entirely so a jack with one box left functions just as well as a jack with 20 boxes, everything rolls three dice for attack and damage, and everything is grid based with an always-visible grid (read: pre-measuring). I'm a HUGE fan of the tabletop game and you'll see most of that in this digital version. That's a good thing. However, to have access to ALL the units you're going to have to pay real money for small DLC faction packs. This digital-blister-pack approach has managed to frustrate a lot of players who still see huge problems and missing features in the "core game."

The problems I have with the game are the horrible UI and the inescapable sense of being on rails. I think that in multi-player that sense of rails might go away, but I was expecting and hoping for more from the single-player campaign. It's just not that good.

The UI gets in the way all the time. It's cumbersome and about as much fun as filling out your taxes.

I know I don't trust most reviews that are all good or all bad, but honestly after giving it way more then a fighting chance it has failed on every level. The interface is the opposite of intuitive and the animations are off-label PS2 at best. I'm amazed with how well funded it was on kickstarter we have what we've been given. This is the first time I saw fit to write a review, but honestly with the Privateer Press, kickstarter AND early access money there is no excuse for this wonky old-school indie game feeling slop.

This game is worth every penny if you enjoy turn based strategy games (xcom but with different universe/lore) or games like Warhammer. The campaign is fun and takes 1-2 hours to complete each mission. Multiplayer is where a big part of this game shines as well you can pick different factions you want to play and go versus or coop. This game had some issues around launch but it great now, don't let it slip by you for such a low cost, you can even try the demo for free. Not many devs do that these days.

Honestly worth 20$ now and a small team like this deserves it, but if you're skeptical I'm sure it'll hit 15$ on sale sometime soon. Or maybe finding it elsewhere for less..

This game is getting better and better, the patches withnew units added some real diversity by adding some interesting models to the game.

The look and feel of the game also fits the lore very well.

TL:DR Buy it on a massive sale or in a bundle... just in case.

I found this game to be a fun "meh, close enuff" version of the tabletop game. The graphics and UI, and overall mechanics, are pretty horrible, but if you can get passed that initial disgust and find a groove where the mechanics don't annoy you, you can have fun, especially if you have some friends to play online with. THAT said... last time I played this online, there was a bug causing many matches to lock up at random times during the battle. I haven't heard if this was fixed or not.

So, to a select few I recommend this game. To everyone else I say this game will die soon. At this point, I think the only way to save this game would be the devs opening up to mods, doesn't even have to be workshop. I'm not saying full mods that might interfere with any intellectual property of Privateer Press, but how about that army painter that was talked about way back during the kickstarter? Maybe let the community make some new maps and single-player missions or scenarios? A skirmish/sandbox mode where we can pick any army size, just to experiment. In fact, I would be willing to bet there's modders out there more familiar with the Unreal engine than the devs, and I'm sure it wouldn't take long for mods that could optimize graphics, UI, lag, memory leaks, and anything else brought up in negative reviews. Just some random thoughts...

I understand why this is getting mixed reviews. The first thing you're greeted with is characters who are stationary and unmoving during a cutscene.

Going into this I knew that Privateer Press is a company that makes wargames using miniatures. And that the characters in this are essentially figurines. I recommend going on Youtube and seeing some of the actual game footage, particularly the cut scenes, before you buy. So you know if this is a turn-off to you.

The devs focus seems to have been the combat system, which plays alot like the recent X-com games. My first impressions are that the gameplay is deep and well-made. I suspect that much of the community is more interested in the competitive multiplayer aspect then the campaign.

This should not be surprising but I should also mention that I encountered some bugs, mostly minor graphical ones.

Anyway, if you like tactical wargames, and don't give a ♥♥♥♥ about how pretty the cut-scenes are. Then you might very much love this. But try the demo first.

Okay, to start with, I'll point out that there was a very small review (archived at the bottom of this one) that was essentially a complaint about how the game lacks a save system. Well, less than a week later the Dev's implimented a save function to single player. Clearly they read the old review and terrified by the thought of annoying me as they had, they fixed it as soon as they could. (I don't actually mean that. That was a joke.)

Oh, and I'll also mention I've never tried the multiplayer mode, so I can't comment on how popular it is or how easy it is to get pick up matches or suchlike. If that's your thing you'll probably want to check the discussion forums for that.

Right, so.... actual review time now. Where to start? Well, the game looks rather spectacular. They went all out on the graphics, that much is obvious. Everything looks nice and crisp and all the animations move smoothly. More often than not when a game developed like this puts that much focus on graphics it tends to suffer in other areas like performance, but I can't say that's true here. When I bought this my PC was chugging along with an absolutely shameful amount of RAM that meant that most toasters had more processing power than it did, and there was no lag in combat or movement. The closest things I can think of that some people might consider to be issues here are the cutscenes, which are voiced but not animated (You get still images of the people involved in dramatic poses while the lines are spoken) and the way corpses can pile up - if you kill enough people in one small area the bodies tend to stack up and get a bit weirdly floppy and wave limbs wildly and suchlike. Neither thing is an actual game breaking issues though, just something people might not like.

TL;DR: Graphics good and shiny nice.

What next? Gameplay. Well, the UI can be a touch fiddly in a few cases - if a unit gets extra movement, say from a skill that lets it shuffle about a bit after killing someone you need to actually click on the YES I'M DONE WITH THIS UNIT button which caught me out a few times and made me think the game had broken the first time it happened, but once you get used to it it certainly isn't the worst UI I've ever dealt with.

There's a thing called confirmation bias, where people have a tendency to only remember the things they want to be able to use as proof of something, so take this bit with a grain of salt, but I suspect the RNG is stacked in the AI's favour - I definately think I've missed more hits than I should have, and damage rolls have consistently been on the low end. That might just be me though, or it might be a hidden behind the scenes thing to give some much needed help to the AI. The enemy AI isn't amazing. It's functional, but it will never end up giving you one of those stories you can talk about where it did something totally unexpected and wrecked you with a flank attack or something. It's all 'hail diddle diddle, straight down the middle'.

TL;DR: UI slightly fiddly, AI Functional, not amazing.

Ultimately there's a fairly solid little middle of the road game here. It isn't incredible and it wont blow your mind, but what is here isn't bad - they could have scraped together some crappy mobile game and paid a Korean coding sweatshop to port it over later or hired some random developer to vomit up something for whatever number the xbox or playstation is up to this month, but they didn't, they got someone to put together a nice little PC game that is still being patched and worked on regularly, and that should count for something.

All told I'm going to have to quietly change my recommendation to a yes.

The game doesn't have a save function. It's 2016 and there's a game here without the ability to record your progress. I kinda feel like the explorers in those old 'Lost Valley of the Dinosaurs' type movies. I've found something that should have stopped existing long, long, long ago.

As a long time player and supporter of the table top game this is based on, I was really looking forward to playing. I even pre-ordered the stupidly expensicve version. Now though, I can barely get the game to run, on a machine that should crush it. The odd graphical glitches still exist. The animations are poor. And I do not feel like this is a Warmachine game at all. You could change the colors around and slap another name on it and it would not make a difference at all. Go somewhere else if you like good turn based strategy.

Game is Trash, i used to be a player of the table top game but ever sense Privateer Press went from being a good company to just a greedy company on a cash grab they have turned out sad products like this one.
