11.25.14 Hotfix is out!

We're doing a big run on stability, performance and of course, continued fixes to gameplay, so here's what went in:

  • Loading issues with characters were causing a number of weird issues - everything from base sizes to characters messing up in various ways. This is fixed.

  • Fixed save game unlocks, so all maps you've completed should show up now

  • Optimized foliage usage and rendering for better performance

  • Teleport no longer affected by rough terrain

  • Gameplay modifiers applied as a result of free strikes now expire on the correct turn

  • Acrobatics now properly allows Allison to move her full distance

  • Allison can now charge using acrobatics

  • Units killed during cinematics are now handled properly

  • Camera movement improvements (Don't forget that by holding down middle mouse button, you can angle the camera)

  • Tutorial updated with newer camera instructions

  • Pawns no longer cheering when they're knocked down

  • Optimizations to leaderboard stat display

  • Global leaderboards now up

I'm a HUGE fan of the tabletop game and you'll see most of that in this digital version. That's a good thing.

The problems I have with the game are the horrible UI and the inescapable sense of being on rails. I think that in multi-player that sense of rails might go away, but I was expecting and hoping for more from the single-player campaign. It's just not that good.

The UI gets in the way all the time. It's cumbersome and about as much fun as filling out your taxes.

I concur with others that this game is not yet ready for general release. I say shame on whoever decided to declare this release ready.
Yes the campaign is done and combat works, but there are too many pain points to make this game fun yet. I know it is common if not the norm these days to release a game and then spend the next 6 months fixing it, but I don't feel that is right to your customers. I was a kickstarter backer so I understand there will be rough edges during the process, but setting the game for release in this state makes me fear the game will never receive the attention it deserves.
-Camera controls are unintuitive and require constant adjustment.
-Mouse input is erratic.
-Game engine completely stops switching between units. screen freezes breifly and FPS counter will go to zero each time enemy AI units make a move.
-controlling units require too much busy work like changing facing before being allowed to attack a unit instead of just allowing the unit to select between all units in range and just change the facing as appropriate. Doing unit facing changes at the end of each units turn is cumbersome and unnecessary.
The UI currently bogs down the game. Turns feel like they take twice as long as they should because of constant camera angle changes and other control issues. Even something simple like selecting a unit is often unresponsive requiring multiple clicks and hunt for the hotspot.

Game feels very clunky, not a nice experience, too much hassle trying to get your units to cooperate, play XCom instead.

Too bad, the tabletop game is fantastic, but this game tries too hard to replicate that instead of using the computer medium.

The game is simply not finished, however some "genius" decided to release it anyway... It's glitchy, unpolished and unoptimized. The campaign is a farse, with the poorly rendered cutscenes sometimes showing Minecraft-style pixels on armors, terrible voice acting and absurd, cliche plot.

Maybe, MAYBE they'll fix it at one point. For now, avoid at all costs. Also, I regret kickstarting it for $20.

Disclaimer: I have not played the multiplayer yet. This review is based on a single player experience.

This game is like a daily crossword puzzle.. There is a slight challenge and an even slighter sense of accomplishment when you complete it ultimately though no one goes online and reviews a crossword puzzle cause well it's a crossword puzzle.. This game doesn't allow you to do anything other than play their missions who show up one after another after another without a pause in between to save the game and go eat (or something crazy like that). One unit "levels up" after each mission and I use the word level up loosely cause all that happens is one of those units gets a stat increase that is not in your control, it just happens. You have no say over any part of the missions, the game gives you a goal and tells you what to do..

This game is boring enough without adding more to this review but unfortunately there is a MAJOR flaw to the game which is the camera.. Please watch gameplay reviews before buying this game cause the camera angles (which constantly change every time an action is taken) are horrific, more often then not the "action" camera will zoom into the wrong area thus not letting you see what the opponent actually did! The only way to play this game is to continuously adjust the camera to an overhead angle and zoom it all the way out or else you have no idea where everyone is. So graphics mean nothing (not that this game boasts good graphics) in this game when you are playing a far overhead game..

I was a backer of the original kickstarter campaign, so I had the key from mid-August. Didn't bother with the early access though, as I've learned it could spoil the fun of finding your way through the game once it's released, so I waited till official release became available.

To my dissapointment, at the time of writing despite being released the game is far from actually feeling like a polished product ready for shipping. At best it's a public beta. Counter-intuitive in-game controls, camera which is tending to look everywhere other than where you need it, blurry and very slow graphic (12 FPS on GTX 650 1920x1020, seriously?). Obviously it hasn't been playtested properly yet, so a patch or two might get it all fixed.

Unfortunately, lack of optimisation it's not the only problem. I didn't play the original tabletop game, but I do enjoy turn-based tactic strategies such as XCOM, and, I am sorry to say that, this game falls short of the modern standard for the genre. The introductory narrative in the beginning of the single player campaign fails to communicate even who I am, who the war is with, and for what cause, main characters say pretentious fluff and refer to georgraphic locations I've never heard of, voice acting is dreadful and amateurish. As a result I lost interest after 30 minutes of playing, and will uninstall the whole thing. Perhaps if you are a hardcore fan of the original tabletop you would see through all the sloppiness, but I'd rather play something else.

ps: i feel bad for color blind people at those bright winter map....Good luck finding your friggen cursor in there.

OVERALL not a bad game thou....JUST needs a patch...or 2.

my advice: wait for visual patches that make the ui more readable in said bright maps or a sale...W/E comes first.

The multi-player game certainly captures the spirit of the Tabletop Warmachine game. You select a leader for your army, and then build an army based around the strengths and weaknesses of that leader. Sometimes you will choose a ranged attack army that that will do poorly in melee, so you have to keep far away from your enemy, and sometimes you will have only melee units and have to run directly at your opponent to engage them in melee as soon as possible.
Thusly, it is a battle of wits, where carefully laid plans can lead to combinations that will devastate your enemy. There is also an element of luck, however, in that no matter how carefully you plan, a series of misses on your part, and critical hits on your opponent’s part can turn the game around entirely.
This game can be a lot of fun.
Now, on to the bad stuff. Sadly, there was too much work put into the graphics and animations, and not enough work was put into developing the gameplay mechanics. The game is not smooth to play, the camera controls are atrocious, and the user interface is frustrating, to say the least.
There are three fundamental things wrong with the game, and they will never be fixed.
1. Tactics is based on a grid system, this makes it clunky and crappy. This may seem normal if you have never played the tabletop, but the constraints on facing, and unit placement are huge. (I wish they had used free movement, imitating such as X-com, or Valkyria Chronicles).
2. They got rid of units, and everything is now a solo, but with hit points. (They ♥♥♥♥ed up, and they ♥♥♥♥ed up badly. There are many reasons they did this, and they are good reasons, but still, they ♥♥♥♥ed up. Getting rid of units, this, they should not have done.)
3. Tactics now uses three dice for hit and damage rolls. Boosting adds a +3 bonus, not an additional dice. There are now three tiers of damage, normal, boosted, and critical. (They will probably reduce the amount of criticals. It’s obscene and frustrating.) But their translation of the tabletop system seems ridiculous, and makes my brain hurt.
There are multiple little gripes, but given time, these can be fixed.
Ignoring the single player campaign. The people that made it certainly did their best, but, well, ♥♥♥♥. As far as I’m concerned, it was stupid, and uncalled for. Those resources would have been better spent developing the multi-player game, rather than on half-♥♥♥♥♥ voice actors and crappy cut scenes. They had the time to do what, 20 levels, but there are only three multi-player maps on game release? Foolishness. Epic foolishness.
All in all, I recommend buying the game, despite its major flaws, if only because I doubt there will ever be another Warmachine computer game (ignoring vassal). Multi player can be a lot of fun, it's magical gambling chess, with steam machines and magic, and this world flavor is awesome. I certainly hope that Whitemoon can stay in business long enough to get more units developed for release.

I will start off by saying I never played Warmachine the tabletop game.

I am a huge fan of turn based strategy games such as XCOM, Civ, and Fire Emblem. I love me some board-games too, most recently I've been hooked on X-Wing miniatures.

This game scratches all of those itches. You have a very wide selection of units to choose from, and four factions at present that all feel very distinguished from each other. The depth of strategy in building a squad alone is immense, and it only gets more tactical when you actually have to deploy your units and do battle.

*Proven gameplay taken from award winning tabletop game that's been around for a while
*Massive depth available for building and tailoring your army
*UI that is very helpful for n00bs (mouse over things to get them explained!)
*Animated "models" breathe life into a miniatures game
*Awesome rag-doll for corpses. Having a warjack hammer someone and watching a crumpled corpse get propelled backwards is always satisfying.
*Multiplayer Options (local, async online, etc)
*Well done single player campaign helps you learn units and gameplay rules
*True hit percentages.... you can have only a 20% chance to hit with a 5% chance to crit and successfully crit your target!

*True hit percentages.... you can have a 95% chance to hit with a 50% chance to crit and miss your target...
*Single player is only Cygnar Faction. More please!
*Still being worked on. (not really a con, but some UI elements are a little rough still and things like the Army Painter are coming)
*No way to save skirmish games midgame. They do move pretty fast but if you need to do something else and you've got 2-3 rounds left it's going to be an issue.
*Camera can take a little getting used to

This game is a lot of fun. If you enjoy turn based strategy games, chances are this game will rock your world. It's not too hard to get into, but it'll take a few games to know what you're doiing enough to venture into the army creator.

Played for five minutes, got two crashes and eventually managed to get it running (on the lowest graphics) at an astonishing 2FPS. That's right folks, two whole frames per second. It looks like it could be a cool game (love the tabletop) but it is absolutely awfully optimised. It's small-scale and turn-based but holy hell it runs jaggier than a lot of modern First-Person Shooters.

If this gets patched out, I'll try to get a proper review up. Until then, it's totally unplayable.

Loving the game and its very satisfying to play a round each evening.
Looking forward to new units being added in the futute.

Its not perfect, but each patch has done wonders for the game and if it keeps up it will be one of the best turnbased wargames around.

This is one of those games that are obviously indie in all the wrong ways - the lack of experience, budget and skill is clear in everything from the numerous bugs to the non-sensical design decisions (why make three versions of the same spell, with different cost, instead of allowing players to set it manually?) to the parts that just feel shoddy and unfinished, like the infamous camera.

I love the tabletop game and I was very excited about a computer version. Sadly, the only thing that really makes it worth playing is the single player storyline, which is decent, and the atmosphere. The game mechanics have been redone to the point where it's a completely different game system - so different that my interest in the multiplayer is quickly dying. It's not a game for WM/H gamers, it's a generic computer game based on Privateer Press IP, and it's not a very good one.

For people who aren't into the tabletop game, there is little point in buying this. I enjoy it mostly because of my love for the setting, I doubt I'd have played more than a few missions otherwise. The camera is annoying and takes a lot of work, the interface is clunky and inelegant, the game is riddled with bugs (including crash-bugs and bugs that allow both the player and the computer to do things like walking through walls), there are still minor problems that should have been gone long before launch (like the colour of various important lines and markers being too light to see on snow, or disappearing under landscape features), the default settings for sound and graphics are way off (I had to reduce the music volume to 2/10 to hear voices), you can't skip cut-scenes (adding to the irritation when you have to restart a mission - there is no option for saving during missions)... the list goes on forever.

In short, this game had a lot of potential, but it is so far away from being what it could that no amount of patching can fix it. I regret buying it at full price, and would caution others against doing the same.

As a keen Wargamer and player of the original table top version, i was excited to see Warmachine brought to Steam. Gameplay is very close the the miniature game, and I find myself using familiar tactics and combos to complete the single player missions. There are some things that still need improvement, particularly the constantly changing camera angles. Otherwise an enjoyable turn based strategy game.

Fun game - not the same as the tabletop, but it's similar enough to pick up quickly and keeps a lot of the strong parts of the game. I'm a bit put off by the DLC units, since I think it's only there because "thats how the physical version works" but the games not $60 and the Developers have done a fantastic job of listening to the community during early access, so I'm confident that it will work out.

Great game, a very interesting story line for the single player and tons of missions. Will be playing this one for hours and hours and then...I get to battle my friends!!. The devs run updates for bugs every week or two so not worried about those and thumbs up on a great experience!!!

So, I'll start off with my initial thoughts of the game so far given that the full campaign has only just been released. *Warning* there will be some slight spoilers.

The good: I've just started to get into the tabletop version of Warmachine and so far what I've played does a good job of keeping to the core mechanics. The graphics are pretty good for a kickstarter game, some CG cutscenes would have been amazing (especially of the duel between Orsus and Sturgis) but that's really asking too much of a limited budget. The gameplay is well done, with actual thought being required so that you don't open yourself up to enemy charges or block your own movement and/or line of sight with an ill-timed activation. That's one aspect of the game I've really enjoyed so far which is good because there are a lot of minor areas that need at least a little improvement.

The bad: The story. The story is almost cringe worthy in its absolute lack of originality and, so far, bad presentation - I mean, another superweapon that could change the course of the war / end the world as we know it plot line? Really? Even the opening scene almost made me facepalm when Jakes stated that "I...I killed Commander Stugis". My reaction was no, no you didn't. I haven't even played the storyline yet and I know this, stop being a drama queen. Given the fluff available in the books I was really expecting better, even the game characters seem almost caracatures of themselves compared to their presentation in the books. There is one twist that might have been interesting but since anyone with even a nodding acquaintence with the game likely knows what happens to Stugis it's a moot point. I would have liked something more along the lines of the old Dark Omen game where your actions and decisions decided how the story progressed and what units were available.
The voice acting isn't bad, not great, but somewhere in the middle and they did seem to match their characters. However the pronounciation of Brisbane as Bris-bane really irritated me for some reason.

Since I haven't finished the campaign yet I can't say the storyline is difinitively horrible but I'm not hopeful for a turn around though if it does happen I will edit this review.

The mediocre: A couple of small issues that will likely be fixed in future patches, the UI really needs to be adjustable with at least a scale though being able to move, fade or remove selected elements in addition would be better. Having subtitles not take up almost a third of the screen would also be nice. The cost is about average for the standard edition but considering there's a lot of DLC in the works that you'll have to buy seperately... well maybe the DLC will reasonably priced.

I'd recommend this game if you're looking for something fun that will likely focus around multiplayer battles. I haven't come across many bugs at all so far, mainly just a few with speech and sound clips not playing or not playing quite right. Definetly no game breaking bugs which is great. Whatever you do you should not buy this game expecting a great or even good story but the gameplay is solid especially if you enjoy mulitplayer battles.

It seems to me like the game is trying too hard to be both faithful to the tabletop and different at the same time, so that no one is happy. They should have gone entirely one way or the other. As it stands now, we have an unfinished and very cumbersome game that did not deliver on a vast number of the promises made. I am a HUGE fan of Privateer Press and Warmachine/Hordes, but the more of this game I experience, the more I regret kickstarting it. I really wanted to love this game, but I'm just left disappointed. At least it looks really nice.

First I want to say I do like this game, BUT several things spoil it. On the upside it is pretty and fun to look at with an engaging story and when the controls cooperate the game really seems to come together.

1) Clunky and touchy controls.

The controls at first seem pretty straighforward until you try and use them. It can be hard to tell how you trencher or warjack will move what facing they may end up in. Getting a unit to face the proper direction can at time be very frustrating as the controls for facing are extremely sensitive so make sure you have the arrow pointing in the right direction before you click that mouse button. Simply point getting you units to move and do the things you want them to do can be frustrating.

2) The terrain.

I have noticed numerous times units moving through various terrain features on the map. but this isn't the big issue here. First, I cant tell what is and what isn't rough terrain. Also your movemnt lines tend to get obscured by piles of dirt, rocks and grasses making it hard to get an idea of where your unit might end up after it moves. I had to guess a few times and click hoping my trencher would go where I wanted him to go. Other times the visual contrast such as line against snowy terrain make it nearly impossible to see what you are doing.

3) Numerous and varied glitches

First, most of the game breaking glitches have been ironed out. That being said there are ALOT problems with various graphical effects and some abilities not working the way they are supposed to. There is a bug reporting tool if you feel inclined to send the developers a note of your problems.

4) The UI

The UI is takes up a little bit to much of the screen and sometimes seems to get in the way of your mouse. Information seems to get cluttered when you have a bunch of units engaged in a giant melee making it at times rather difficult to tell what is happening at a quick glance. The last part of this is the mini map IT STINKS! It is completely useless.

2) The Story

I have only played through a portion of the campaign so far at the story is engaging and fun.

I was fine with this game being unfinished, then they took it out of early access. The user interface is terable and the game is loaded with gliches, it may be improved with time but dont hink you getting a finished game
