About This Content

DCS: Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight is a highly realistic PC simulation of the Mi-8MTV2, a combat transport and fire support helicopter and an upgraded variant of one of the most widely produced helicopters in the world - the Russian Mi-8 (NATO reporting name ‘Hip’). Having serving in over 50 countries in a wide variety of models over the past 40 years, the Mi-8 is a revered veteran of countless military operations and civilian services around the world. Developed by Belsimtek and Eagle Dynamics, the team behind the hit title DCS: UH-1H Huey, DCS Mi-8MTV2 continues to deliver exceptional realism and immersive gameplay within the DCS World virtual battlefield.

The simulation features accurate modeling of all primary aircraft systems, avionics, and proper functionality of nearly all cockpit switches and controls. Flight and other dynamics are modeled using real-time physics calculations and carefully tuned using actual Mi-8MTV2 documentation and pilots deeply involved in development and testing. The result is not only the most realistic Mi-8 reproduction on the PC, but a comprehensive helicopter model that correctly presents complex dynamic effects particular to helicopter flight, such as: autorotation, vortex ring state (VRS), translational lift, hover in and out of ground effect, and many others.

As part of the DCS World battlefield, you are placed in the cockpit of the Mi-8MTV2 to fly combat transport and support missions as the left pilot, right pilot or gunner. Equipped for close fire support, the helicopter can be armed with unguided rockets, gun pods, and on-board machine guns. In the transport role, a cargo of up to four tons can be carried internally or three tons on an external sling system to deliver and retrieve supplies in a wide variety of terrain and weather conditions. A series of single missions and a handcrafted, immersive campaign plunge you into the heat of battle in the DCS World battlefield of countless AI and a variety of player-controlled fighter and attack aircraft, helicopters, and ground units. Get online to play with or against other DCS players in a synthetic online battlefield.

A quickstart guide and interactive training help you get started quickly while the comprehensive Flight Manual details the helicopter’s systems and operational procedures. A wide variety of gameplay options allows each player to tailor their difficulty level as required.

Key Features of DCS: Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight include:

  • Unmatched flight physics providing the most realistic and dynamic conventional helicopter experience on the PC
  • Multiple player positions, including pilot, co-pilot, flight engineer, and door gunner
  • Accurate and highly detailed 3D cockpit featuring six-degrees-of-freedom technology compatible with head-tracking devices
  • Interactive cockpit controls that allow you to operate systems using the mouse
  • Accurate modeling of the Mi-8MTV2 instruments, weapons, engines, radios, fuel, electrical, and hydraulic systems
  • Highly detailed Mi-8MTV2 external 3D model, liveries, and weapons
  • Accurate audio environment based on custom Mi-8MTV2 sound samples
  • Immersive, handcrafted campaign with a variety of transport and fire support missions
  • Training with interactive and video lessons
  • Multiplayer coop mode for crew members of the same helicopter under development for a later update
  • Developed in close cooperation with actual Mi-8MTV2 operators

One of my favorite modules. Navigation, rocket runs, cannons, machineguns and bombs. When multicrew finally gets implemented this will be even better.

Hard as hell. Long start up procedure, difficult take offs, difficult landings, and a quite confusing looking cockpit with hundreds of buttons. There is also a lack of YT Tutorials for this thing, so if you're not a fan of the pre-made training missions that come with every module, then you might wanna skip this one.

Great if you want a challenge though, at the time of writing this review I had this thing for days, spent hours flying it, and I still struggle with landings, I just come in too high and end up spending up to 5 minutes descending from 2km up :D

Eagle Dynamics recently allowed me to preview their newest modules for DCS world, the beta versions of DCS: UH-1H Huey and DCS: Mi-8 Hip, so here are my thoughts!

Helicopters are not my forte, and they never will be. They don’t make life easy for you, and I’m pretty sure they will immediately try to kill you as soon as you take your mind off of the task at hand. However, as a complete “noob” to realistic helicopter simulation, I decided to dive right into the deep end, with the most realistic of them all.

These simulations are realistic, incredibly realistic; to the point that you would have to be qualified on type to notice any mistakes. Ironically, the closest I can to flying a Huey or Hip is a similar feeling of a numb posterior after a particularly long flight. With all the basics of helicopter flight mastered, taking either for a spin is a pleasure.

Huey-03She’s still a joy to fly even with my Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS X (if somebody were to get me the Thrustmaster Warthog, I’d be forever grateful). As with any title from Eagle Dynamics, BETA or not, there are beautiful flight mechanics. You only have to look at the applause the plethora of other titles by them have received to see how well each and every detail is modelled. From that single point, great things are expected from Eagle Dynamics. Fortunately, they don’t disappoint.

Part of the allure with this simulation, for me anyway, was that it was so in depth, so dependent on skill and procedure, forcing you to think like the brave pilots that have used the Huey and Hip in combat. You have to keep your eye on the sink rate, engine RPM, rotor RPM, while looking where you’re going and evading fire. It’s not a forgiving simulator by any means; it only takes a second of concentration lapse to over speed the rotor.

That’s not to say that this game won’t cater for the newer players, there is an option to turn on ‘game’ flight mode; eliminating some of the steep learning curve and letting you fly around care free, making it a whole lot easier to line up a strafing run. While I’m not a fan of this mode, I can guarantee that your average Ace Combat or HAWX jockey will be able to have a lot of fun with it.

While the Huey and Hip are separate modules, there are a lot of similarities between the two. Even to a relatively inexperienced pilot like myself, it’s easier to tell the difference between the two airframes. The Hip is a lot more sluggish, for example. Differences aside, however, these both helicopters can perform a similar role of Anything from Close Air support to Casualty evacuation. Both of which you will be experience in either helicopter!07

Unfortunately, there are a couple of things that set the simulator back; namely the environment and opposition available (Especially for the Huey). The Huey and Hip are basically a really big add-on to DCS World, which is set in Georgia. While it might be nice to have Vietnam for the Huey, it’s not essential. The Hip can easily get away in this setting though. Not very authentic for the history geeks, however an exciting and challenging campaign does help you forget the geological misfortune and help you focus on the flight and combat mechanics which really make the game.

Overall, it’s hard to remember that this is still only the beta stage for Eagle Dynamics’ UH-1 Huey and Mi-8 Hip. Subtle improvements are being added and bugs ironed out (not that I’ve seen any), my only wish is for the developers is to include some form of variation to the setting. That, I think, would make this game a “must have” item for people right around the world.

So what we have here might just be the single most involved, complicated, realistic, and comprehensive commercial grade helicopter simulator period. Both the Ka-50 and the Huey are excellent, but I think the Mi-8 takes the most realistic title.

For those outside of the DCS community, this is a module that plugs in with the rest of Eagle Dynamics DCS series. Meaning you're buddy can fly around in the Ka-50 providing CAS while you run the troop insertion. Right now the series has 2 simulation levels for aircraft, one for somewhat simplified operations (while retaining a professional level flight model) and another for fully clickable cockpits.

The base game comes free with a simple Su-25T and a clickable T-51 (trainer variant of the P-51). This should give you a good feel for what the complexity of the other aircraft are like. I recommend getting some pedals, and insist on a stick. I won't lie, this game is not for the arcade crowd, you will need a good couple of hours before you even have the engine start down. If this sounds like it will be a turn off, this game isn't for you, but if you're on edge, try the freebies first. Otherwise, I cannot recommend this game enough.

The Mi-8 itself is very polished even for its semi-beta status, I have yet to run into any glitches specific to this module, and the only real indicator that this is a beta is that a few of the switches haven't been implimented (and I so mean few, they have it down to fuses at this point).

I gotta say, there really isn't any feeling like getting on a server, joining a mass flight of other helios, and getting some lead on target. Note that this module will come in handy once a Hind has entered the works, the 2 aircraft share the same core airframe and flight procedures.

Availible modules include

DCS - Flaming cliffs: All these aircraft are simplified modules

The following are fully clickable
Bf-109 K-4
Fw-190 D-9
C-101 Aviojet
Hawk T.1a
and more to come.

Basically, if you're looking for the single best flight sim you can get without working for an AirForce, look no further. The only real downside is the lack of Civvy aircraft (which may very well change).

This is the best aircraft in my hangar.
It is made for three operators and maybe we will see the day where we can fly such aircrafts online in a team.
But it's no problem to fly it alone, after some training you will find every control and every switch blindly.
You better have accurate input devices - if so you will get an overwhelming feeling for helicopter flying.
In the beginning you might crash several times but when you gain experience you will fly absolute precisely.
Take care about Vortex Ring State when you lower your speed or while hovering. The Mi8 can fall like a stone.
You will notice this situation when the Mi begins shaking - if you have enough altitude then it's time to move the stick forward in order to accelerate. If not .....
You don't have movable cannons like in the "Huey ", so you need to aim with the whole helicopter.
But with the different cannons and rockets at the pylons you are able to carry a lot of firepower.
Finally the only thing to say is that I love this fat lady.

I love it! its an amazing heli. You gota put a few hours in it to fly it like a champ but when you get the hang of it this heavy beautiful heli its a real treat! im totaly hooked igot the most planes in DCS and this is the one i put the most time in now.
For me its the perfect balance of a hard learning curve, the pure joy of flying it and satisfaction when you accomplish something.

The details are great! just would love more tutorials in game but you can find plenty of them on the net.

More helis in DCS! 5 stars of 5

Old lock on vet! ;)

Although my first few hours in this were nothing but facepalms when it came to a cold start up i recommend. this 110% this helicopter is quite amazing under certain circumstances. but as far as i can tell this is one of the best helicopters. you can buy although iv only purchased this helo and the ka-50 its quite fun once you get used to everything.

But i Highly recommend Downloading the manual For this and keeping it handy.
