This is without doubt the most authentic Helicopter simulator for PC, excluding Black Shark which is quite a different experience. If you want the raw difficulty that comes with learning to fly a helicopter without numerous stabilisation options, autopilots and everything else that flies for you, then give this a go.

I would say that a 'reasonable' joystick with the most basic throttle is an absolute must, don't even bother if you haven't got that. TrackIR boosts the experience but isn't totally essential. If you have 100 pounds burning through your pocket then a set of rudder pedals will further heighten your experience. If you struggle to hover, then you likely need a better joystick.

On the negative side, DCS can cause a lot of frustration with various bugs. I would recommend patience however as you won't find anything like this anywhere else, things like 'take on helicopters' don't even compare. Things like troop drops with no troops in your helicopter is rather immersion breaking, hopefully things like this can be improved in the future. Their mass is considered though, which you can really feel.

If you think this expensive, then you might consider the level of research which must have been conducted to create such an authentic experience. Not to mention that this is a very niche market and profits aren't going to be amazing.

If you like the helicopter simulators in Microsoft FSX, you will do well to treat yourself to this DCS add-on. There is a Huey users' manual on the DCS website that can give you an appreciation for the detail they put into this simulator. Fortunately, there is one key commands to go through the auto-start sequence automatically. As it goes through the auto-start sequence, take notes to the actions it performs. Over time you can look up the individual key commands and do those steps yourself. The fun is all in the learning process and getting better each time.

Like FSX, there are missions with unexpected events. You can also create your own missions. Some bugs also add to the unpredictable nature of the missions. Unfortunately there is one bug that crashes the program after a mission and the mission results aren't saved. This could be good, if you crashed, or bad if you completed the mission. The bug doesn't occur all the time, but I hope DCS fixes it. Given that you'll want to repeat missions to get better, this isn't as bad as it seems.

My system is a haswell G3220 (3GHz dual core) with an average gfx card. It plays just fine with high settings. Download the free DCS World and fly the P51. If your system can run that, then it should run this to your satisfaction.

I use a Logitech 3d extreme stick. The game seems designed for a separate throttle and stick setup, but remapping the collector to the usual throttle control on the L3d works good enough, for now. Just like in FSX, it will take some time to get the feel of controlled flight.

The edge detection is much better than FSX. No flying through trees or ships in this sim. Unlike FSX, you can take on damage and actually see the effects. The screen cracks/scratches and sun glare look very real. FSX states "as real as it gets", but this is more real.

Huey is a brilliant aircraft for DCS. It's so easy to learn, the only thing that's hard about it is hovering. The cockpit is brilliantly modeled and it's a dream to fly if you don't want to get anywhere fast :)

Quite simply the most authentic and amazing helicopter simulation ever released on PC.

Understand that this is a simulation in the truest sense of the word, not a mere video game. If you're looking for blast 'em up action you should go elsewhere, because you'll find this product slow and frustrating. If, on the other hand, you'd like to learn how to fly a Bell UH-1H from a product certified by the helicopter manufacturer (the simulation carries an official Bell product number), then welcome to your new addiction.

A few pieces of advice, if I may. First, do not try to "do it all at once." Take it slow and accept that you're going to be wobbling around like a newborn foal for your first few hours of flight. Don't get in a hurry. Fly for an hour a day, learn gradually, and you'll be much happier. Those high speed approaches and combat landings you see in the movies are flown by professional pilots with thousands of hours of stick time, usually in type. You CANNOT do that, and you won't be able to for a very long time. It'll take you about 10 to 20 hours behind the stick before you can confidently set the helicopter down safely and more or less where you want it -- and that's with a slow approach.

Learning to do it well, repeatedly, and without error is much of the fun in this game. Everything is modeled with extraordinary precision. This is the first sim I've ever seen that gets retreating blade stall correct (basically it pulls to port at high speed) and models vortex ring state as a dynamic, recoverable event. This is a manually controlled, non-fly-by-wire aircraft designed in the middle of the last century. It is primitive and cranky, sometimes doing things for no readily apparent reason. It is a pilot's aircraft which requires both a delicate touch and firm hand to fly well. If you don't take charge of the aircraft, it will kill you without hesitation.

Remember that the Huey is primarily a transport helicopter. Gunship is an ad hoc role for this bird. Sure it can be fun to fly a support mission, dumping rockets and minigun streams all over the enemy while taking small arms fire, but that is not the Huey's reason for existence. Try flying a high-speed, low altitude (<200 ft AGL) insertion along a river bed, pop up to a hill to drop off a four man LRRP team, then egress at high speed back to base. Just keeping the helicopter in control at maximum speed and minimum altitude will have your palms sweating, (N.B. - Do not try this your first or even your tenth time out of the barn. Make sure you've thoroughly digested all of the basics and know the bird very well before you go all Howling Mad Murdock on it.)

For your first few hours, spend time tweaking your controller curves. It is absolutely IMPERATIVE that you get your curves set properly or you'll find it impossible to control the aircraft with any degree of predictability during missions. I recommend this as a starting point: Cyclic, 7% dead zone, quick curve up to a 70% saturation on both x and y axes. Collective and anti-rotation linear, 100% saturation. Tweak that according to your individual controllers' quirks. Note that you will need stick, throttle and pedals to fly this simulation. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. I have a thousand bucks worth of sim gear sitting in the corner, but I prefer to fly this one with a $20 Logitech Attack 3, a Saitek Throttle Quadrant and CH Pro Pedals. You must be able to manipulate all three controls simultaneously from muscle memory in order to fly smoothly. The keyboard and mouse ain't gonna cut it here. A final note on controls: force trim is your friend. It works a little differently here than in a real helicopter; here it acts to re-map your current cyclic input position to neutral center on the stick, more like airplane trimming. You should constantly be force trimming as you fly. That's the secret to smooth and level flight in this simulation. Don't forget to release all force trim on final approach; I go neutral at about 100 feet and 30 knots. You'll need true neutral stick for the delicate maneuvering during landing as you go back into ground effect.

For other HID stuff, I also recommend Track IR and Nvidia Surround with three monitors; both are supported perfectly in the game and add tremendously to both immersion and aircraft feedback. Remember that you are attempting to pilot a type of aircraft that is notoriously difficult to control and you're doing it without the single most important instrument for any helo pilot, the Mk I BSC, or Butt-Seat Connection. Anything you can do which helps you "feel" the bird will improve your ability to control the simulation.

Finally, I suggest you always do ramp starts for missions (not when initially setting up your curves; use instant free flight for that). Why ramp start? Because it puts you "in the zone." After you get the patterns down, you can go from a cold bird to ready-to-taxi in about two minutes. While you're doing that (flipping switches, setting dials, talking to ATC) it puts your head in the right place -- inside a helicopter cockpit. Not mowing the yard or feeding the dog or dickering with the wife. You're about to do something which requires intense concentration, and going through the start up focuses you in on that task. I guarantee you'll fly more smoothly after a start up and taxi than you will if you just jump into a hot bird on the strip.

I started playing flight simulations on an Apple ][ in 1982. It's not much of an exaggeration to say I've played pretty well every sim released since that time, and this is without a doubt the most realistic of them all. Don't let the "seriousness" scare you off, though. This is really a FUN simulator. If you've an interest in the subject material, as do most people who grew up during the Vietnam era, it's worth every single penny and then some. On my experience with this package alone, I will be buying everything produced by Belsimtek for DCS World. It's that good.

The helicopter responds the way you think a real UH-1H would, with the shaking of the dashboard and the smooth turning along with an emersive sound system and a fully functional cockpit with everything clickable aswell as a highly realistic damage model. My only complaints are the door gunner system, its very insensative and the was to move them is slow and sluggish, the trees and buildings are no-collide and as with any DCS module, gameplay is stale after a few hours in game which is a problem especially considering the hefty price tag. Besides that, I truly recommend this for any person a fan of classic war-time helicopters and want an experience at a dangerous real to life CAS role.

TL;DR: 8/10, if its on sale pick it up if you love simulators and helicopters

Eagle Dynamics recently allowed me to preview their newest modules for DCS world, the beta versions of DCS: UH-1H Huey and DCS: Mi-8 Hip, so here are my thoughts!

Helicopters are not my forte, and they never will be. They don’t make life easy for you, and I’m pretty sure they will immediately try to kill you as soon as you take your mind off of the task at hand. However, as a complete “noob” to realistic helicopter simulation, I decided to dive right into the deep end, with the most realistic of them all.

These simulations are realistic, incredibly realistic; to the point that you would have to be qualified on type to notice any mistakes. Ironically, the closest I can to flying a Huey or Hip is a similar feeling of a numb posterior after a particularly long flight. With all the basics of helicopter flight mastered, taking either for a spin is a pleasure.

Huey-03She’s still a joy to fly even with my Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS X (if somebody were to get me the Thrustmaster Warthog, I’d be forever grateful). As with any title from Eagle Dynamics, BETA or not, there are beautiful flight mechanics. You only have to look at the applause the plethora of other titles by them have received to see how well each and every detail is modelled. From that single point, great things are expected from Eagle Dynamics. Fortunately, they don’t disappoint.

Part of the allure with this simulation, for me anyway, was that it was so in depth, so dependent on skill and procedure, forcing you to think like the brave pilots that have used the Huey and Hip in combat. You have to keep your eye on the sink rate, engine RPM, rotor RPM, while looking where you’re going and evading fire. It’s not a forgiving simulator by any means; it only takes a second of concentration lapse to over speed the rotor.

That’s not to say that this game won’t cater for the newer players, there is an option to turn on ‘game’ flight mode; eliminating some of the steep learning curve and letting you fly around care free, making it a whole lot easier to line up a strafing run. While I’m not a fan of this mode, I can guarantee that your average Ace Combat or HAWX jockey will be able to have a lot of fun with it.

While the Huey and Hip are separate modules, there are a lot of similarities between the two. Even to a relatively inexperienced pilot like myself, it’s easier to tell the difference between the two airframes. The Hip is a lot more sluggish, for example. Differences aside, however, these both helicopters can perform a similar role of Anything from Close Air support to Casualty evacuation. Both of which you will be experience in either helicopter!07

Unfortunately, there are a couple of things that set the simulator back; namely the environment and opposition available (Especially for the Huey). The Huey and Hip are basically a really big add-on to DCS World, which is set in Georgia. While it might be nice to have Vietnam for the Huey, it’s not essential. The Hip can easily get away in this setting though. Not very authentic for the history geeks, however an exciting and challenging campaign does help you forget the geological misfortune and help you focus on the flight and combat mechanics which really make the game.

Overall, it’s hard to remember that this is still only the beta stage for Eagle Dynamics’ UH-1 Huey and Mi-8 Hip. Subtle improvements are being added and bugs ironed out (not that I’ve seen any), my only wish is for the developers is to include some form of variation to the setting. That, I think, would make this game a “must have” item for people right around the world.

- Fun as hell to fly.
- Good against infantry and light vehicles.
- Fun to use its door gun.
- Also can swivel its 2 mounted M134 guns, great for gunning.
- Detailed as hell.
- Very good sound effects.
- Quite manouverable.
- Hard to fly but you can be percise with the right pratice, took me roughly a 1.5 hours to get the hang of it. Oil rig landing after 4-5 hours of gameplay went smoothly after 2 attempts.
- Has flares, so not "Full out screwed" in combat.
- Great lighting system.
- IR shielding also makes it less screwed.
- Quick start up
- Tutorial is messed up, not narrated as good as the others.
- Very weak against armor, especially AAA. Best against soft targets and infantry.
- Not enough tutorials.
