I am a big fan of rogue and rogue-like games but my brain just cant wrap around this one. The absolute lack of any kind of evolution or progression appart from you "notebook" is annoying as is the pace required for this game. I'm sure there are a lot of good things about it but this one just doesnt sound fair or rewarding enough for me. FTL, Rogue Legacy and even odd ones like dungeons of dredmore are more to my liking.

This is a game designed by a sadist and targeted to masochists. Unless you don't mind losing your sanity keep away.

There are difficult games that are fair and others that aren't. Spelunky belongs to the latter category. First of all, there are things that can happen off-screen that are out of your control ex. a shopkeeper aggros from environment hazards. I really like rogue-like elements in games, it always keeps things interesting but if you keep things almost completely random you will end up with some very ridiculous level designs and other game elements. There were many runs where I had ridiculous amount of gold and couldn’t get a single shopkeeper with even a 3-pack bomb. Even in the secret level there was only one with one pack! Whole runs up to the temple where there was no jet pack in site etc. Also level designs where the key/1up was in an entirely inaccessible place or one where you had to waste 3-4 bombs in order to get it and level designs that are almost unwinnable unless you have tons of bombs. A more semi-random level design would have been preferable like for example in Super House of Dead Ninja or Risk of Rain.
Secondly the controls are really bad. The whip has good range in the front but has very limited range in the 45° angle. This makes enemies that are coming diagonally to you, very hard to hit and there are many of them. Also one of the worst things is the hanging from the edge. There is an item in the game that makes you hang all the time and instead of making things easier for you in most cases it makes them worst due to the bad controls. Designer could have included for example an option where only if you hold the jump button you could hang from an edge. Another example of bad controls is that you need to hold down + button to pick up an objects. In the heat of battle this can be a big problem because it takes some time for hold down + button to register and you end up with no item. This has happened many times to me. The problem could have been solved simply using a different button in the controller or keyboard us the “pick up item button”. Things like that were excused in the NES era where programmers were forced to do things like that due to hardware limitations but we are in the 21st century we have controllers with 15+ buttons what’s the point of using things like “down + button” anymore? Just to frustrate people?
Overall this game reminds of some NES era games. Instant deaths, no continues, a final boss that one shots you, bad controls, it’s all there. I believe Spelunky falls in the difficult-frustrating category rather than the difficult-fun category (Dark Souls, XCOM etc.). It’s a pity because with a few adjustments this game could have been a legend of the genre.

Infinite replayablility, so much to explore, great art direction the only problem is getting the shortcut to the temple; its a bit of a peak challenge bringing a key through the entire game.

Love the game and is especialy fun in short bursts. The only downside is that I sometimes I go into rouguelikes saying "I am going to play until my character dies." That type of thought is terible because I seem to die a lot. But every death is enjoyable and even though I don't think I will be beating this game soon I am still playing it whenever I want something quick to do that still has a lot of challenge. I would recomend this game to anyone who likes hard games.

This game is perfect.

You can beat it in less than 7min if you're good, or take more than 1h if you want a higher score.
999 out of 1000 deaths could be avoided if you were a bit more careful.
There are no repeat levels. Every time is a new experience.
I'm yet to find a bug in over 660h.
Runs perfectly on potatoes and NASA machines.
Controls are really smooth. You do exactly what you pressed.
Music is great. Visuals are great.
There's a pug who lick your face do restore health!

Best roguelike game ever made.

Let's say you fit into some of following traits or characteristics,

Easily Frustrated
Winning orientated
Hate restarting/ No evident progression.

Let's just say if your going to win at spelunky then it will take TIME, you will not always WIN, you will have to RESTART a lot without much EVIDENT PROGRESSION besides your journal/ knowledge of the game and this game is FRUSTRATING at times due to going to fast or IMPATIENCE. If you feel like you can handle this then keep reading.

Spelunky allows you to go fast but becomes much more difficult if you do. For example

See all these people complaining about getting hit by, say a dart trap off the screen? if you play slower you can see the dart trap before it fires and same goes for many of these complaints frequently seen including most enimies.

Falling on spikes/traps, look where you're going or use your ropes and bombs givin to you to help navigate the level

Running into enimies, sounds dumb and easily avoidable but considering what I said earlier and the skeletons that look just like skulls in the landscape AND traps, I can almost guarantee you will run into stuff and get hurt, possibly knocked into more danger (or a spike) that led to your death.

Although, the player can't be blammed for everything some things that the game could improve on are:

-The story, Pretty meh I don't care that much (See what I did there) look at my name if you didn't) My name is Meh.)

-Wall hanging/ attacking, I die frequently due to accidently hanging on walls or attacking in the wrong direction EVEN THOUGH I SWEAR I TURNED AROUND but this is probably just me being inexperienced with the game

- Shop keeper issues, Although I have not experienced this my self there are many ways a shop keeper can be unfairly angered, all of these ways involve an enemy hitting a shopkeeper even when the player has not interfered with the enemies AI or even seen the enemy or shopkeeper
resulting in a very angry old man and usually the players death Should have never angered that shopkeeper WAIT I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING STUPID GAME despite saying this I'm sure this is fairly uncommon.

- Co-op, The camera is a nightmare and there is no online co-op but there isn't many other problems

- I probably missed something so look at some more reviews but these are all my issues

so tl;dr

Spelunky is a fantastic roguelike with many original elements combined with great platforming, it is very difficult and challenging allowing for many hours of gameplay (Much more then my current amount). On top of that the game being randomly generated adds variety to the experience and the secrets/achievements/journal that will keep you playing even after you think you have done everything. Although the game has it's problems they are compensated for in the gameplay, looks, difficulty, awesome items, maps and traps this game entails. I bought this game for the low low price of $3 and I would reccomend buying it even at it's full price of $15.

I am terrible at this game, but it is a great game.

It's my go-to, too-drunk-to-learn-a-new-game game.

Which is probably why I haven't ever progressed past the second world.

Spelunky is randomly generated, and forces you to get better if you want to win, I've never gotten the same level twice. You can't just memorize levels like you can in games like Meat Boy. The levels are always fair too, despite being randomly generated, I never feel cheated by the game when I die and I always blame myself.

Over all, I give this game nine Burgah boy snot burgah pukes, out of ten potential snot Burgah Boy throw up Bugel Boy snot pukes.

Gameplay: 10/10
Visuals: 10/10
Music: 10/10
Replay Value: 10/10

I only have 15 min on steam having played this but I've played it for hours elsewhere and I can say the experience is more or less identical.

Spelunky is addicting, fun, and very punishing. The easiest way to lose in this game is to be careless. Fall damage hurts you and while that is something I usually hate in platformers, it works here. Things like fall damage, spikes that kill you in one hit, and leaps of faith because you were too cheap to use a rope or blew em all already, really make this game something special. You have to constantly have your wits about you because any wrong mistep can kill you especially from the second world and onward. Taking a golden idol or throwing a bomb the wrong way can turn the sweet prize you just got sour if the shop keeper is disturbed and then goes on a murderous rampage. You will probably play plenty of levels over and fortunately unlike plenty of other games Spelunky's randomly generated levels are extremely entertaining and never got boring to me. The key to winning is precision and awareness.

All that said the art for this game is top notch. Enemy designs are cute and fun as are the characters and each level is full of life and color. As for the soundtrack? It gets a 10/10 from me. I almost didn't feel it was worth mentioning but the story what little there is really isn't important as its not why you should want to play this game.

Spelunky it's a random platformer game, always changing I guess it's also rogue type, none the less I've loved each second on it, it's fun to explore and think how to get out alive to the next level, it also has a lot of Mayan stuff references, as I live in Mexico that's a plus for me.

The first rogue-like that I ever played and is still as addicting as ever.
I've known this game since the classic version came out and I still love it, especially since the HD version adds more content (and excludes some (bow, pistol, ect.)). You will die a lot, that is a fact. You should play as carefully as possible until you master most of the enemies and game mechanics, keep in mind that after 2 minutes and 30 seconds a spooky ghost will chase you all over the map.
You can check the classic version for free and decide for yourself if it's a game for you.

Randomly generated levels, dangerous creatures and cunning traps make Spelunky an endless cycle of death and suffering. It is not easy to achieve glory in this game, as every single action can lead to devastating results. Apart from that, it also includes a very charming artstyle and soundtrack, bringing you back to more treasure hunting. It is indeed a game meant to be represented as a "challenge", and it succeeds perfectly at doing so.

Fantastic game, managed to fill my body with joy as I achieved my very first win after 1251 deaths.

Do you enjoy banging your head against the wall out of sheer frustration?
Do you enjoy throwing your recommended controller at your computer angrily in a fit of rage?
Do you enjoy causing harm to yourself and or your friends?

If you said no to any of these, Spelunky is not the game for you.

If you said yes to any of these things, you'd probably enjoy Spelunky... (as well as a good mental hospital.)
