ArkCo News - 1/24/15

Hey ArkCoNauts!

Hope everyone's holidays were wonderful, and that you're all as excited as we are about the new year! As you may or may not know, depending on whether you watch the countdown on the main menu screen, the next huge update is drawing near! We're very excited about this one, and so we wanted to fill you in on a few things we're working on. The headline is TIER 3!! The biomes in Edge of Space are massive, and the first two tiers of content are still being fleshed out as we go. Up till now, the gear in game has been just barely strong enough to glimpse the desert biome below, but not venture into it yet. We felt it was high time to finally unveil the mysterious 3rd biome, and let players advance that low for the first time in the game's history. It's a huge undertaking to be sure, and the first iteration will feel slimmer than the first two tiers in terms of content. That being said, once the foundations for it are there, it becomes easy to cram content in and bring the area to life. Along with the new biome, will come the new weapons and armor to accompany it, letting players stretch further along the progression chain. Here are a couple of screens of some of the new gear that awaits:

Along with all this awesomeness, we have good news and bad news. The bad news, there will be a wipe needed, due to the extensive changes to the world in this patch. The good news? As of this writing, it appears only worlds will be zapped by it, your characters look like they will survive this one. This means if you get your inventory expanded, you can stuff your most prized possessions into your inventory, and bring them with you into your brand new worlds. Should this change before patch day, we will most definitely update the community, but here's hoping our little ArkCoNauts get to live on!

On the Community side, I wanted to take a moment to thank the 160 awesome people that turned out for our day-after-Christmas live giveaway on IRC! Patch V0.3408 - Happy New Year!

Hey ArkCoNauts! Who’s ready for the New Year? We are! 2014 has been amazing for Team Handyman, and we can’t wait to crank things up in 2015. This is our final patch of 2014, and with it come some much needed optimizations, which should help some of the performance issues players might have noticed hanging around.

Christmas Event will remain in for the duration of January! After that the event will remain however it will be far more rare and only attainable in the arctic biome.


  • Fixed the display of the arctic armor on avatar screen and on avatar (Thanks for my pants!)
  • Fixed icons for chitin items so they are no longer the same (All shapes and sizes!)
  • Fixed an issue with cloning pod in respect to crafting raptors (no more diminishing returns!)

  • Massive optimization to the rendering loop (ENHANCE!)
  • Reduced memory usage in respect to sky rendering (It’s not supposed to be that big?)
  • Added controls for “V-sync” and “Tile Detail Level” in the options menu (One Size can fit all)

  • Improved performance of placeables in respect to rendering (Place as many as you want, really!)

About This Game

Suit up as an operative of the Ark Corporation, sent to the farthest reaches of the universe in search of habitable planets to terraform. With no choice but to descend to the surface and figure out how to survive long enough to complete your mission, you step into the escape pod.

Along the way you’ll gather resources to craft armor, weapons, facilities, and vehicles to help you explore the world and conquer its aggressive inhabitants. Your base of operations will evolve from a few basic facilities exposed to the elements into a hardened fortress full of advanced technologies that let you accomplish amazing improvements to your equipment and alter the environment itself.

EoS is still a buggy and slow paced game. No real wiki to find out your information from, you gotta learn it all by yourself. It'll take you a couple of hours before you really get started on how to play the game. Some of you may be bored after the first couple of hours, because you simply have no idea what you are doing.

BUT for those of you who can get past the first 5-8 hours of playing this game, it may become interesting to explore, to dig to find new stuff, head towards dungeons. With that said, how well you fare in this game is how much patience you really have. You have to read stuff in the codex to learn how things works, you may never get past some parts without help from the community. Its grind intensive, one thing that I don't really like. You have to kill, and kill, and kill, like in an MMORPG, just keep killing, and leveling, want to build more stuff? Kill more, get more science points, convert it to research data.

Eventually it gets so absurd that you need so much research datas and at the same time, you reach a point where you get alot of science points that you either have to find a couple of upgrade platforms and extend your Science maximum capacity OR you just kill and stop, convert it to datas, every few minutes.

If you want to go by the first method to make things a little easier, dig more! The upgrade platforms which are so beneficial and essential but of course, it is so god damn rare. For those of you who have played terraria, it is pretty much like the Crystal Hearts but rarer. Its interesting but also tiring because of how big the world is, You have to explore and explore and explore to find these upgrade platforms. There is simply no way you can chance upon this without luck since there is no navigation help or map for you to refer to.

So do I recommend this game? Sure, I do, but overall I give this game about a 6.5/10. Keep in mind that this is still in early access.

It has a massive content, but not enough help support, things are still very buggy, but it is not unplayable, the designs is pretty and simple, but a little unappealing. The developers are helpful, they respond alot, the game is updated very frequently,

My unsatisfaction with this game is due to its grinding factor of kill dig kill dig, find stuff, continue killing, build stuff, and finally, just finally, you can get to the first dungeon and die more, realising you need better armor, and to get better armor, you need better buildings, so you kill and dig more, to build these buildings and armor, but it is way too slow, so you need to build better tools, but for better tools, you also need to kill and dig more. THEN you also need better weapons, and you know where I'm going with this.

So why am I still playing it? Well to be honest, it is because of the developers. They want to improve this game, so I close an eye while writing this review and at the same time, try to tell you guys about the truth of this game. It is not exciting, half of the game is not completed yet, but hearing what the developers have to say, I'm sure that EoS will be much more fun when it is launched. So i'll give you a couple of reasons to get this game and a couple not to.

Get this game if you
- are patient and want to see the game grow, contribute to the community and give feedback to the developers.
- are willing to fork out money to support the development of EoS.
- are willing to take the risk and pay a cheaper price for early access, with hopes that this game does not end up like other Early access games.
- You are a rich ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, so why the hell not?

Do not get this game (now) if you
- Just want another Terraria-like game to fill your time. (Seriously, if that's your motive, don't get it yet)
- Want to get the full experience right now, and you are unable to tolerate buggy, and slow-paced game. (In this case, you should try Starbound for a better experience)
- Want a multiplayer game for you and your friends to play with. (Yes, reasons for this is because it is likely that either 1 of you are gonna get bored, and when you buy this for multiplayer, you are gonna play this for multiplayer, and end up not playing it when your friends stop.)

While this game is not terrible, those of you who do not have that much patience, did not have an enjoyable experience or with expectations that are not met, but at the same time would like a concept similar to EOS, maybe "Signs Of Life" would appeal to you more.

Hello readers!

Let's get the obvious out the of the way: it's in Beta. There will be changes. There are glitches. Boo-hoo.


It's engaging, especially compared to the garden variety of miners and crafters out there. There is a multifaceted approach to crafting that requires both raw materials and the know-how of a specific skill to be able to craft. Science Points (SP) are awarded for everything - killing baddies to laser-punching dirt - and are used for increasing skill levels in broad categories such as Base Construction (BUILD BIGGER CHESTS!) to Utilities (MAKE STRONGER LAZERBEAM!) to Consumables (WHO NEEDS CRYORODS ANYWAYS?). Once your skill level is increased you can then craft a better item for yourself! Enough on crafting..

Enemies! They're gorgeous! They're varied! They kick my ♥♥♥ =( They have weaknesses that make it an engaging combat game beyond point-and-click. Angles of attack, parabolic arcs, and reload times all need to be taken into consideration when fighting the local floral and fauna. Build stronger weapons! Fight bigger baddies! Get more SP! Build Data from SP into building better weapons! Rinse - repeat - pwn.

Dungeons! Just when you think you've found it all - suddenly you're platforming through a mega-dungeon fighting off mechanical brains with well-timed plasma rifle shots! Loot Loot Loot Loot.

More dungeons! Did you know penguins like pre-marital sex and Daft Punk? Play this game to find out why. They're promiscious. And deadly. More Loot! Why do I need all these brain stems? SCIENCE!


It's in Beta. Lighting sometimes ♥♥♥♥♥ itself - sometimes there's no shadows at all! Hitboxes have been off before - but appear to have been patched. Nothing gamebreaking that I've run into with my 38 hours. 1/2 the world isn't filled in yet - but I'm sure it will be amazing when it is! There's more than enough to explore as is.

The only gripe I have is lack of map - but it is a planned implementation, and I'm sure will be here soon. It's a large and confusing world - even with teleportation available you still get your ♥♥♥ lost.



I give it a solid 8.5 - with the possibility to be a 9 or even 10 when all the bugs are worked out and content is added. The time I have put into it should say enough. As a fan of Minecraft and Terraria - both Vanilla - the Edge of Space more than meets my expectations and is my current crack.

So far I enjoy this game. It's colorful and fun to look at, the music is beautiful and somewhat trippy, and it's a standard 2-d mine and build game. My main issues with it are falling to my death at least thirty time in a session and the slightly odd way characters hold items and move. I assume an actual 'walking backwards' animation will be added at some point. But yeah, I recommend it for what it is at the moment.

Pretty cool game, little more confusing than Starbound when I get into it for the first time but I feel like the more confusing a game is the more fun it will be later on depending on the game type. It is more similar to Starbound than it it to Terraria if anything, I didn't get too far into the game so I can't say if it is much like Terraria at all.

Terraria is better, but only because its a fully developed game. This one is still in progress, but is incredibly addictive, even more so than Terraria in my opinion. They've implemented a skilling system, where you repurpose dirt and mud etc into experience data which you then use to level your skills up in order to unlock new weapons and armor. Its a little complicated for those who just came from the simplicity of Terraria, but you catch on pretty quick.

Its a little unbalanced, but what can you expect from an early access game? I say if you liked Terraria, you'll probably like Edge of Space a lot too, but you'll want it when it comes out fully. The world's a little too big, with not enough to do, and the Arctic Biome is really dangerous, but again, I'm expecting these things will be expanded on eventually.

Final verdict: Currently not nearly as deep and immersive as Terraria but has INCREDIBLE potential to become an even better game.

9.5/10 cant wait for the released game

Finally Early access done right.

Regular updates, it already got two different huge biomes !
Devs are posting regularly in the steam forums.
This game remembers me of an insane mix of metroid and terraria.
Your an astronaut and embark on a mission to reclaim and terraform a split up planet. The deeper you get the more radiation you will discover so dont forget your protection !
Of course you can setup your outpost and craft all shiny furniture. You can research different armor sets and weapon types like phase and projectile weapons. It got even nice upgrade mechanics like improved health , deploying mini turrets or even a grappling hook !

Now you say what ? Only 2 biomes and terraforming isnt implemented yet ? With terraform i mean turn the land into a more livable space with less radiation and hostile creatures. Base building you can do from the start!
Dont fool yourself the biomes in EOS work much differently than compared to terraria. Terrarias biomes are rather small and can be traversed quickly. But on the other hand EOS's biomes really feel vast and huge. So those areas really invite you to explore and discover new lifeforms and alien buildings :)

Basically the end end goal upon release is to turn the planet back into a livable space with oxygen etc. But terraforming is a future feature.

I think in the past 2 months this early access title did do huge steps in the right direction. I was just on a server now and got disconnected. So i was confused, but actually they pushed an update right now ! So those devs are really crazy with the updates. For example the christmas update included 2 new dungeons , 1 new boss, 1 special event and several new items to craft.

Basically its a blend of 2d metroidvania and terraria. Ranged combat is a huge deal with many rifles and laser guns. Currently you cant do melee combat, which is intended. Each crafted weapon can get different stats and clip sizes etc.

It maybe starts slow and you need to get used to the crafting and research mechanics, but im sure after 4-5 hours you feel right at home :)
But take notice Win Xp is NOT supported !
Mac and linux arent supported yet, but get a future implementation!

Just check out the forums to get a better picture whats going on.
When starting the game first time i strongly recommend doing the tutorial first.

Edit: It got now tons of christmas content. It had so many updates i cant even follow up all ! I think currently it got two different biomes with different flora and fauna and now even a happy new year patch came out!
So obviously still recommended and the updates are amazing :)

multi leveled world, deeper than terraria
balanced resource scrounging, nothing is handed to the player
an absolutely unforgiving survival situation, where one step can and will kill you.


the tech tier is off a bit, making it nearly insane to get the stuff to explore the lower levels of the world.
The inability to move your spawn point. It wouldn't even need to be moved, if there was a way to remove the tiles underneath it.
The combat damage is way to OP, 90+ damage from flying jellyfish is a bit much.

But none of the bad things listed should detract you from trying this great game out.

Not a great game at the moment. But amazing potential. I'm very interested in the "Big Patch A’ Coming" in 12 days. If you do choose to play the game as is I suggest you dig a 2x2 hole. Then stand to one side and angle your laser just slightly so that you sort of auto-dig until you die, then invest in data and repeat several times. If you can handle that mundane repetition... it kinda becomes interesting.

This game is overall pretty great. The controls are a little clunky and its kind of complicated but considering that it is in beta both things will probobly be resolved. For the most part this game is super fun and definatly worth it.

I like Edge of Space a lot. It's not my faovrite 2D sandbox but it's up there. I think it's the Devs that make playing and supporting Edge of Space worth it in the end. I have not played much Edge of Space because I have a new thing where I don't play early release game. I only give them a test run and either pass or fail them or sometimes give them more time. I did not vote positive or negative on edge of space back in the day. But I felt the game was pretty bad! But I knew it would get better. And I have watched 30 or so hours of the game in recent updates and now I can safely say that I love Edge of Space and it's great being able to listen to the Devs and see how they take both positive and negative feedback and work to improve the game.

I recoomend this game as it is very in depth. There are many different things to do like mine, explore, kill, create, build you name it. this game has something for everybody! Its a beautiful terraria like game about surviveing in the depths of the universe and this is why i reccomend this game.

Been playing for a few hours now, and it's really awesome the sheer amount of content that has been packed into an alpha game. There's a huge amount of depth to this game already. However, this does come with some drawbacks. Not everything is mapped out for you, and while this may not seem like a big deal, with so many branching options on how you want to progress in the game it can become overwelming fast. Some sort of talent tree system, or unified menu for research and it's current level would be a huge help. A wiki for this game is something that the community is more responsible for, but as it gains momentum this type of resource will come naturally.

Updates for this game are seriously quick and seems to flow constantly. Be ready for new content or fixes often, and tweaks to things you already know.

Yes, I highly recommend the game for those who like sandbox games, and especially those who have a friend to play it with. Just remember that starting out is tough, and the end rewards are worth it. This is no terraria or minecraft or any other crafting game you've played. This is Edge of Space

what i really liked about this game was the fact that it was pretty much terraria in space. and thats what made it so unique because sure there was the the olden days in terraria but no futuristic ideas. what i disliked about was that sometimes it would take a while to load.
