What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are a small studio, while we have the ambition, we do not have the resources to simple finish the game and release with all the promised features. Early Access allows us to have the financial resources to finish the product while at the same time allow players to help us figure out and solve problems in design and execution.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“This game should reach a final release candidate by around mid-2016.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The final version will be a smooth experience that allows players to build and share entire game worlds through the world editor. The main game storyline will be complete with many new animations to draw the player into the world.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We are in beta.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No, it will be the same price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We listen to all the comments posted on the Steam boards and our own message board, we do not agree with all the suggestions, but we do consider them. If there are very good suggestions, they do make it into the game.”

Beta 0.9 Released

And here we are, at beta 0.9, the game’s basically asset complete. We will now be aiming to get this game out in final form on November 7th. We wish we had more time in Early Access, but we’ve been in here a long time, and people are getting impatient (players, investors, development staff, you name it). Of course, final doesn’t mean the end of updates, far from it! That’ll be saved for another news post on our post-final plans. But right now, for the next couple of weeks it’ll be tweaks, bug fixes, polish, and more tweaks.

In general, we have gotten crash bugs down to a minimum (we’ve only received 5 new ones since the last build, and they were fixed). If you’re crashing to desktop, we will need you to submit your output log to us to figure out why it happened.

For Kickstarter supporters, we added your names into the game at all the crashed ships. You’re listed as Star X Corporation employees, who made the colony mission to Maria possible. The in game armor and weapon sets are done but we’re still working on the code, so you’ll get them next time.

Also, please, please, please(!) spread the word that Planet Explorers is hitting final. Tell your family and friends, Youtubers, news portals, message boards, everyone! We need all the help we can get since we sort of stayed off the grid during much of development. The sales of this game pretty much feeds our studio and all of our future games.

About This Game

In Planet Explorers, it is the year 2287, one of the first colony ships sent out by Earth arrives at the planet Maria, in the Epsilon Indi Star System. During its landing sequence, something appears in front of the massive ship that causes it to lose control and crash into the planet. Some of the colonists survive in lifeboats, but what they find is an unforgiving land filled with creatures ready to outlast the visitors from Earth. Now the survivors must explorer, gather, build, create, fight, and ultimately, build a new home.

Game Modes

Planet Explorers will feature single and multiplayer modes.

In single player there are 3 distinct selections

  • Story Mode – Story mode is the main meat and bones of the game, it is the action-adventure-rpg-somewhat-4X segment, offering npcs, missions, colony building, farming, ranching, training, diplomacy, and of course, a storyline that you can follow or ignore. This story features a 17X8km world map with many unique character, landscapes, biomes, locations, and over 100 types of potential enemies. Even though we’ve made it seem like a very action oriented game in the trailers, in reality, players can choose to not fight so much as to just plant a farm, make some food, keep the colonists alive, negotiate with the sentient aliens, and defend the perimeter from the local life forms. That can still eventually arrive at the ending. And yes, there is an ending. Story mode also features coop with other players.

  • Adventure Mode – This mode is based on a procedural map generated from a seed. Currently, it comes in a 40X40 kilometer map. Players will be able to complete random missions, defeat bosses, and explore different landscapes in the mode and eventually be able to setup conditions that they want to play (such as tower defense or attack an alien camp). This mode will also feature survival gameplay. The randomization in this mode will eventually pull in player made objects and locations so that a world will always feature something new and unique.

  • Build Mode – In this mode, there are no enemies and an infinite amount of building material. It also currently comes in a 40X40km map. Players will be able to build whatever they want in this mode, including everything in the Creations Editor. Think of this as the perfect testing ground to test everything you build. Or…it’s your place to build your garden without ever worrying about the pesky aliens.

Multiplayer allows Local Area Network and player hosted servers. It features several modes but some are still on the drawing board or going through technical trials so the final result is still in flux. Players playing multiplayer should be able to bring at least one of their created objects into multiplayer games, be it a sword, gun, or vehicle.

  • Coop – Coop comes in many selections, such as adventure mode, tower defense mode, build mode, etc. This is pretty much an open world sandbox with a max of 32 players (this number still needs to be stress tested).

  • Versus – This mode allows teams of up to 16 players to battle against 16 players from another team. We allow full terrain manipulation in this mode. Currently, it's a point based system where one team wins if they reach a certain point level based on kills, built objects, resources mined, etc.

Very cool builder. Item design system shows promise but needs a lot of polish. The crafting system as a whole takes some time to get used to, and structure building isn't really functional yet - but a damned good start!

I'd like to see the updates be more substantial and frequent. Selling an EA title doesn't give the developer permission to never finish.

Over two years later...

The game is frozen inside of some sort of engine upgrade limbo. The small studio had to outsource most of the coding change over to other studios when moving up to a new game engine. What we now have is an almost incoherent collection of low quality features that Pathea is trying desperately to tie together and smooth out. Many of updates you see are from these contractors patching their shoddy work. It is a shame. I am not sure that it can be salvaged in time for a real game to be playable.

I highly recommend this game.

A fun and engaging storyline and pretty good graphics.

The most fun for me is in the block by block base building both above and below ground.

The voxel craft and weapon building is very rewarding and I've thoroughly enjoyed making ships, subs, planes and helicopters.

With over 170 hours of game time, I'm extremely pleased with US$25 well spent.

I'll definitely play this again after release.

I played game again, because I recall it's potential. TLDR; wait another year or maybe two.

Game has lots of problems. Many are solved over course of development, but there are still so many things are left before it's ready. I can't recommend it now. Wait year or two. I seen many dead early access games to recommend to buy this even with discount.

Good things:
- story mode is totally playable and enjoyable, quests are much easier to progress, storyline is intriguing, too many will die though;
- adventure mode feels really good, rising skills, hunting, fighting, making money, exploring;
- editor with templates and community made content is cool, it's easy to figure out things by looking at someone's creations;
- game doesn't crash at all (could be subjective as I had my PC upgraded);

Bad things:
- it needs polishing;
- it need bugfixes.

I am really up to play adventure mode, probably in multiplayer with friends, but I have too strong beta-tester-feelings when playing it. It's simply not ready yet.

Below is my old review, pros are still, cons are partially still true (which is very sad).

I must say it's very pretty and addictive game. But in current state I can't recommend it. It has huge potential, idea with building own colony and surviving is cool. But will it become a good game someday? I don't know.

- huge world, different biomes, fauna and flora;
- tier-progressing: wood, stone, etc.
- many interesting concepts: items builder, monorail, colony-management;
- vehicles!

- nothing (!) in game is polished yet, anything you do will smell alpha-version: digging (animation, sound and what is happening is desync), chopping trees (and looking inside empty model of tree);
- crappy UI: HD resolution will blow your eyes, "moving" windows (when you want to drag item), crapy inventory design (tabs in 3 categories);
- poor perfomance and high demanding engine (it crashes every hour no matter which settings);
- very steer learning curve without much assistance (save-load a lot or dig a lot, up to you);
- balance is poor: lack of farming motivation (digging 1000 resources is basically enough until end of game and it take only few minutes to get so much), lack of exploring motivation (you will find nothing interesting);
- quests: be ready to stumble or use reload when doing any quest, they are buggy as a hell;
- vehicles.

endless fun. Creative is a bit annoying with the blank seed giving the same map every time. It would be nice if there was a mode where it combined the infinite building materials with the adventure mode.

-Updated Review-

So please stay open minded!

so as of recently gaining interest in the game once again, i decided to give it another shot!

and while the game is fantastic in certian areas it has flaws. some extreme that need addressed and some minior that you can make do with on whatever mode you are playing. first let me just get straight to the point on a issue that needs to be resolved as of now, and il go into the pro's and cons of the game :)

The game has moved from a 32bit version to 64bit only version (for now - 32bit will follow but with severly reduced features). the developers are extremely active on the discussions page on steam for the game, so if any questions or concerns with the game that need to be addressed you can post there knowing that a dev will reply in that very day you posted the thread.

for anyone interested in the game that has a somewhat mid range PC, Please Be Aware the game is still in beta and optimzation is still a high priority for the devs (judging by comments left on discussions) however.. if you are just slightly above the "Minimal System Requirements" chances are you wont get that great of a gaming experience.

the game is primarily GPU intesive and RAM instesive, IMHO the min specs need to be adjusted because a 460 wont even net you a stable 30FPS with the lowest settings (Fastest). im going to give a personal thought on what the min specs should be, just to serve as a guide line for for new purchasers and also to serve as what would be acceptable in terms of FPS!

OS: Win 7/ 8 / 8.1/ 10 - 64bit
Processor: Quad Core - i5 2600k or better - 3.2GHz or better
Memory: 8+ GB RAM
Graphics: GTX 580 or better (dunno about AMD but look up the equivelent)
DirectX: Version 10 / 11
Network: Broadband Internet connection
Storage: 10+ GB available space (SSD Recommend)
Additional Notes: Must have OpenCL compatible CPU or GPU (DX10.1)
32bit can run, but will experience - Extremely bad frame rate / Slow load times for both 32/64bit (devs know about this issue and working on it) and the game has alot of crashes!

i say these should be the new min specs because a dual core just simply wont cut it when you get to a certian stage in the game that requires you to make a colony. as soon as you start filling your colony, Your FPS will plummit... HARD! people have said they play fine at 50-60 or even 80-90FPS but when they start filling their colony and hit max population. they say their game hangs around the 18-26FPS / 24-33FPS range!

now that the rambling is all done, onto the pro's and cons

- Fantastic Huge world to explore (in Single player)
- Adventure offers unbound freedom (Randomly generated worlds)
- Great World Editor
- Amazing creation system (build miscellaneous objects / funriture / guns / cars / planes / heli's / boats / shields etc)
- Great in world building
- Decent colony managment
- Good survival aspects

- Story line is meh (not that appealing)
- Voice acting could be better
- Some aspects not really that well explained
- Clunky camera positioning
- very bad mouse options (using anything that requires aiming like bows and guns etc has a crap ton of mouse acceleration, not options displayed in settings)

if your PC can handle the game, it serves as a very fun and entertaining game that allows people to build in some ways whatever they like.

Ultimate minecraft with normal shape people and animals
Nobody needs to drink water, except the first person you met in story mode
Can't even have a dog fight with enemies when flying an airplane, turns out the physics is weird as hell
Bugs here, bugs there, bugs everywhere, because f**k you, that's why
Can't even roll over an animal to death with a 60t heavy tank, but even the slightest scrach from a monkey can cause damage to it
Oh you want to know why we can build a flying battleship but not a real battleship on water? Just shut the f**k up and go build me a tank with only large rubber wheels and see if it can moves
I have seen the weakest guns i've ever seen in this game. Maybe they're just shooting peanuts
I'm totally fine with out the ability to build a giant robot, but can't see how two giant robots fight each other is really letting me down
What do you mean you've been shot in the head and stabbed by a giant robot to death? Just give yourself a shot and everything is gonna be fine
No no no, build yourself a base and live here happily forever is not an option. Now move your a*se and p**s off some alien soldiers!
Bollix! Protective colour can't protect you is only because you smells bad
Don't need to put windshields on any vehicles, because the force will be with you
Okay, so here we are, crahsed on an alien planet, and still alive. Why didn't we just open the radar when we were on the landing ship? I mean, that's definately the captian's fault, but it doesn't mean non of those crews couldn't remind the captain and destroy the ship that crushed on us with torpidoes
And one last thing, I really wonder how's Earth and Mars going on. Hope they were not destroyed in the four years when we were travelling. S**t some how I miss my home now

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5

Don't f**k it up, Pathea, not like COD, PLEASE!!! I wish I have 10 billion dollars and yell "shut up and take my money!" to you, but I can't. And wish every single nerds can have a lonely Halloween.🎃

Bought the Game back in May 2014, played it back then with my wife for a good bit had a lot of fun with it in that very early very unpolished form, back then it was more of a sandbox than a game with a story. If I remember correctly it barely had the NPC in it and the terrain generation back then was terrible to the point of the NPC villages were either generated on sheer cliffs or were clipped into the ground and had to be "mined out". I have only loaded it up a few times since the intial purchase but i'm really looking forward to a seeing this game hit the "final" release version on 11/7. Will certainly give the game a good play through then with the other people I know that have the game.

Ive played this way back when it was alpha, it was rather cool and neat with some of the mechanics.
But it didnt hold my interest for long as it just seemed like a fancy way to do minecraft.

Now that i have returned in its Beta. the game has changed So much! and in a good way.
It has a control scheme that makes it stand out to other survival games, and i really enjoy it.
i would say its like a MMO cross survival like style.

i havent gone through too much in the game but been playing it non stop for the past few days, and i really love the colony system, which i think is only in story mode for now i dont know, but the developers did say about porting Story mode elements into other gamemodes.

I would reccommend starting this game through story as its less overwhelming, i like to think that the complex creation system is somewhat optional if your not into it, as there are other gear in game. (just in case you may want to dabble in it later)

There are bugs in the game but i trust the developers to get as many worked out in the near future.

Incredible game, just incredible. I am currently as of writing this only six hours into the story mode, but wow. The graphics are great, it is very well optimized(at least SP, again have not tried online at all),the combat isnt amazing but is still fun,there are ALOT of creatures/aliens that all have different behavioral patterns(i.e. there is a stegosaurous looking guy that travels in packs)that mesh very well togther. The colony feature is also something to shout about. It basically allows you to recruit your fellow colonists once you do some quests for them. This makes hunting in single player much more entertaining and immersive, while adding more strategy as your colonists will only have what you equip them with, including healing items and ammo.Last but certainly not least is the crafting system. On its surface, it appears much like anyother survival crafting(using resources harvested from the world) to create things like wood pickaxe,copper pickaxe ect. However, there is a crafting editor where you can make literally anything you want. For example, I saw a guy that made a laser pistol that looked just like a X-wing,again that was a hand held laser pistol. Anything from weapons, armor, robots, vehicles(land, air and sea) and more.Not only that but you can choose any kind of resource to make any of the parts from, changing the stats of whatever for example a gun made from refined steel will probally do more damage than wood or normal steel.

So bottom line, if you are looking for a game that offers you the choice between complete freedom or more structured play style, do yourself a favor and pick this up.

p.s.- do yourself a favor and watch a youtube video and not the store page ones, they honestly downplay how great this game really is.

Well this game is still a work in progress so it does have the odd bug that shows up and that is pretty much the only problem with it. Report the bugs and the Devs will solve those problems for you very quickly.
Planet Explorers seems to be a group of ideas a Development Team has accumulated and assembled into a fantastic game. Having the ability to build your own vehicle and then import it into the game for your character to use once you have the resources is so easy and fun to do and the creature AI is one that a lot of other games need. Being attacked by a pack of carnivores and then watching the survivors flee once they realise you are hard to kill, or not being attacked until they see you adds a new level to the gameplay. Watching carnivores hunt other animals also adds to it. The are a large number of elements in this game and they are not all there just to make the game difficult for you to play but they do make for a real adventure.
