About This Game

In Planet Explorers, it is the year 2287, one of the first colony ships sent out by Earth arrives at the planet Maria, in the Epsilon Indi Star System. During its landing sequence, something appears in front of the massive ship that causes it to lose control and crash into the planet. Some of the colonists survive in lifeboats, but what they find is an unforgiving land filled with creatures ready to outlast the visitors from Earth. Now the survivors must explorer, gather, build, create, fight, and ultimately, build a new home.

Game Modes

Planet Explorers will feature single and multiplayer modes.

In single player there are 3 distinct selections

  • Story Mode – Story mode is the main meat and bones of the game, it is the action-adventure-rpg-somewhat-4X segment, offering npcs, missions, colony building, farming, ranching, training, diplomacy, and of course, a storyline that you can follow or ignore. This story features a 17X8km world map with many unique character, landscapes, biomes, locations, and over 100 types of potential enemies. Even though we’ve made it seem like a very action oriented game in the trailers, in reality, players can choose to not fight so much as to just plant a farm, make some food, keep the colonists alive, negotiate with the sentient aliens, and defend the perimeter from the local life forms. That can still eventually arrive at the ending. And yes, there is an ending. Story mode also features coop with other players.

  • Adventure Mode – This mode is based on a procedural map generated from a seed. Currently, it comes in a 40X40 kilometer map. Players will be able to complete random missions, defeat bosses, and explore different landscapes in the mode and eventually be able to setup conditions that they want to play (such as tower defense or attack an alien camp). This mode will also feature survival gameplay. The randomization in this mode will eventually pull in player made objects and locations so that a world will always feature something new and unique.

  • Build Mode – In this mode, there are no enemies and an infinite amount of building material. It also currently comes in a 40X40km map. Players will be able to build whatever they want in this mode, including everything in the Creations Editor. Think of this as the perfect testing ground to test everything you build. Or…it’s your place to build your garden without ever worrying about the pesky aliens.

Multiplayer allows Local Area Network and player hosted servers. It features several modes but some are still on the drawing board or going through technical trials so the final result is still in flux. Players playing multiplayer should be able to bring at least one of their created objects into multiplayer games, be it a sword, gun, or vehicle.

  • Coop – Coop comes in many selections, such as adventure mode, tower defense mode, build mode, etc. This is pretty much an open world sandbox with a max of 32 players (this number still needs to be stress tested).

  • Versus – This mode allows teams of up to 16 players to battle against 16 players from another team. We allow full terrain manipulation in this mode. Currently, it's a point based system where one team wins if they reach a certain point level based on kills, built objects, resources mined, etc.

I have started playing this game 3 times now twice in Alpha stage and now at beta 0.60 while some things have improved other things have gone severely backwards, in my previous two attempts I was able to follow story mode up until the point I reached a city in the game - I wont say to much more than that as to not spoil it for others, now part of that story line has gone completely west stopping the player proceeding to that point, definately a huge step backwards in other respects the game has moved forward in playability but there is not much point if you can not complete more each time a version is released. In addition each time a new version is released you end up having to start from scratch which has become an utter pain in the @ss and the iso system which was initially fun has become dreadfully painfull. default iso's for players who don't want to mess with that sort of stuff but just play the game need to be added - this could be a great fun game if it ever gets finished but it's taking so long that one begins to doubt it ever will be,

endless fun. Creative is a bit annoying with the blank seed giving the same map every time. It would be nice if there was a mode where it combined the infinite building materials with the adventure mode.

Very cool builder. Item design system shows promise but needs a lot of polish. The crafting system as a whole takes some time to get used to, and structure building isn't really functional yet - but a damned good start!

I'd like to see the updates be more substantial and frequent. Selling an EA title doesn't give the developer permission to never finish.

Over two years later...

The game is frozen inside of some sort of engine upgrade limbo. The small studio had to outsource most of the coding change over to other studios when moving up to a new game engine. What we now have is an almost incoherent collection of low quality features that Pathea is trying desperately to tie together and smooth out. Many of updates you see are from these contractors patching their shoddy work. It is a shame. I am not sure that it can be salvaged in time for a real game to be playable.

I have only played the singleplayer story mode so far so I'm basing my experience on that bit.
The game also includes a build mode, and even online co-op play among others which I will definitely be trying out later.

The game offers a day-night cycle which is faster than real life, but still long enough to have an impact on your plans and adventures. The nighttime is pretty dark and you will have to use torches, headlights, flashlights or other sources of lighting to find your way around the landscape.

This game is in a really good state for an early access game! I would recommend this game to anyone who likes survival, exploration, crafting, and building games.

If you like survival, exploration, crafting and building this is totally the game for you!
You can craft anything from tools to guns, building modules, sentry guns, you name it. There's a lot of different crafting materials you can gather such as wood, stone, iron, copper, tin, different types of plants and more.

The game plays very well and runs smoothly (> 60 fps) on highest settings on my quad core i7 920 (3.2 Ghz OC) with 6 GB RAM and a GTX 770 GPU.

The terrain deformation is absolutely the best I've ever seen. You can literally mine out a cave or structure the way you want it.
It's a voxel based game which means the terrain deforms a lot more natural than a block game would. I can see why this is one of the strongest selling points for this game. This opencl (cuda?) technique the devs are talking about does really seem to do a lot for this game!

The textures are not "next-gen" at the moment, but very much acceptable for such a complex game. I guess this could be improved once they near a final release. It's definitely not game breaking though.

The combat is very acceptable. It's pretty straight forward, click to smash (a la minecraft) but that's totally fine with me to be honest. You are also rooted into place when performing actions which is awesome and makes combat somewhat harder.

Now, this is an early access game, but the only negative things I've been able to find after an hour or so of gameplay is that the world feels a bit empty. It doesn't feel static, since there's a lot to see like different types of animals and foliage/trees/mountains. It could feel a little more vibrant.

The music is fantastic, although there is only one song which loops. It doesn't get annoying because it's a really calm and smooth composition. It runs for a while too so it doesn't get repetitive at all.
Sometimes the combat music can get a little annoying when you're entering and leaving combat in fast intervals.

There is voice acting for most if not all conversations so far. Some of the voice acting is great and some not so great, but also by far not the worst I've experienced. Could use a little more work in some areas though.

There are some basic quests to help you figure out how crafting and gathering works which is great. The game really does a good job of easing you into the game so far. But it doesn't hold your hand too much either, which is a great thing.

I haven't touched the real storyline so far, so I'll have to see how well the story is played out. But I have high hopes!

This game is definitely worth the money and I would certainly recommend this game in it's current state!

Has a lot of potential and plays very smoothly for an alpha build. Quests and item collection work well, although melee combat is wonky (due to lack of damage animation for monsters, you have to watch the health bar). Building and terrain shifting with various tools is surprisingly functional; I didn't focus on building at first, but it's pretty easy to dig yourself a cave to hide out in, or build some platforms to get around plateaus. Vehicles and item building is also easy; the built-in creator is both powerful and simple to learn and use.

Disclaimer: I wanted to play this game mainly as a wilderness survival game at first, but a couple of things I noticed in singleplayer (story mode) made me reconsider. I wouldn't call these problems since they're mainly design choices, but they're worth noting.

1. "Surviving" in the sense of keeping your character fed/healthy is trivial; you can carry something like hundreds of thousands of items on your person (including a couple of vehicles).
2. The main difficulty in the game comes from combat, which feels frustrating; you can upgrade your armor, but it seems to do little to prevent most large creatures from taking out >1/4 of your health each blow, and there's no simple way to dodge if you're stuck in melee (say, against a flying enemy with an AOE ground attack and who's faster than you).
3. Due to infinite NPC shop storage and basically-infinite inventory, the story mode game sometimes feels like "kill x monsters for meat (currency)", buy next tier of supplies from vendors, do quests to get to new vendors, repeat". To be fair, it's pretty much the entry point for new players, so the parceling out of goods is understandable; it lacks the urgency a survival-oriented game might have, though.

I am so hooked into this game already. I havent even begun building my base yet. But what i really want to share with you guys, after having played for so many hours already. . . .

The way you need to describe this game to your friends. Its monster hunter, just a little. Its state of decay, but bigger. Its Minecraft, but prettier. These are some of my favorite games. Lets not forget, you get to build your own weapons and rides if you so choose to do so. What else are they going to create with this?

Its been a real rollercoaster for this one, went from good to unplayable and back a few times now, buts its getting nothing but better as time goes on it seems. To all of the ppl that say its a "dead" game that will be in EA forever, I guess they havent seen the recent improvments that just pulled it out of one of the low points i spoke of above. Ive seen even thru the low points the devs do their best to get patches and content out...the game may not have a large player base ATM, but its far from dead and poised to be great!

This is the game I wanted from StarForge. This review is wrote in haste, i think i have maybe 3 hours into the game, and just in survival mode at that. Game includes a Story mode and multiplayer. So as of right now, the game does show a few bugs, most of which i have been able to over look, and one game breaker when trying to load into a saved game, not sure what caused it but i can imagine being 20 hours in and BAM, saved game corruption. But becuase of the future i can see for this game, every bug can be overlooked ATM IMO. Still I would call this a early beta if i didnt know better. So the best way i can compare this game to others you might know is a SCI-FI Minecraft with Better Graphics, the ability to create your own Weapons ( completely design swords and sheilds from scratch ), and design your own Helis and Cars, Recruit others to the bases you create. You can mine for minerals, hunt monsters, but its set up where you could not have to do one or the other. Meat is used as Currency, so hunting can get you what you need to build anything. Or mining can get you the "meat" you need buy selling ores. Needless to say, im fairly impressed with this one. Playable and fun in Alpha, Thats hard to do....GOOD JOB.

Incredible game, just incredible. I am currently as of writing this only six hours into the story mode, but wow. The graphics are great, it is very well optimized(at least SP, again have not tried online at all),the combat isnt amazing but is still fun,there are ALOT of creatures/aliens that all have different behavioral patterns(i.e. there is a stegosaurous looking guy that travels in packs)that mesh very well togther. The colony feature is also something to shout about. It basically allows you to recruit your fellow colonists once you do some quests for them. This makes hunting in single player much more entertaining and immersive, while adding more strategy as your colonists will only have what you equip them with, including healing items and ammo.Last but certainly not least is the crafting system. On its surface, it appears much like anyother survival crafting(using resources harvested from the world) to create things like wood pickaxe,copper pickaxe ect. However, there is a crafting editor where you can make literally anything you want. For example, I saw a guy that made a laser pistol that looked just like a X-wing,again that was a hand held laser pistol. Anything from weapons, armor, robots, vehicles(land, air and sea) and more.Not only that but you can choose any kind of resource to make any of the parts from, changing the stats of whatever for example a gun made from refined steel will probally do more damage than wood or normal steel.

So bottom line, if you are looking for a game that offers you the choice between complete freedom or more structured play style, do yourself a favor and pick this up.

p.s.- do yourself a favor and watch a youtube video and not the store page ones, they honestly downplay how great this game really is.

Well this game is still a work in progress so it does have the odd bug that shows up and that is pretty much the only problem with it. Report the bugs and the Devs will solve those problems for you very quickly.
Planet Explorers seems to be a group of ideas a Development Team has accumulated and assembled into a fantastic game. Having the ability to build your own vehicle and then import it into the game for your character to use once you have the resources is so easy and fun to do and the creature AI is one that a lot of other games need. Being attacked by a pack of carnivores and then watching the survivors flee once they realise you are hard to kill, or not being attacked until they see you adds a new level to the gameplay. Watching carnivores hunt other animals also adds to it. The are a large number of elements in this game and they are not all there just to make the game difficult for you to play but they do make for a real adventure.

Hats Off to the Devs of this game and THANK YOU 4 it !!..The game is worth every Abe Lincoln too !! Finally someone has put together a game that has it all for us gamers to enjoy..A person can get lost for Hours on the creation tool alone ,,,,lol !! For everyone who has not tried this game out yet..I have only ONE thing to say..."You are totally missing out !!"I look very forward to see what the devs have planned next for this game ..even tho it really doesnt need anything else !! Ultimate minecraft with normal shape people and animals
Nobody needs to drink water, except the first person you met in story mode
Can't even have a dog fight with enemies when flying an airplane, turns out the physics is weird as hell

I played game again, because I recall it's potential. TLDR; wait another year or maybe two.

Game has lots of problems. Many are solved over course of development, but there are still so many things are left before it's ready. I can't recommend it now. Wait year or two. I seen many dead early access games to recommend to buy this even with discount.

Good things:
- story mode is totally playable and enjoyable, quests are much easier to progress, storyline is intriguing, too many will die though;
- adventure mode feels really good, rising skills, hunting, fighting, making money, exploring;
- editor with templates and community made content is cool, it's easy to figure out things by looking at someone's creations;
- game doesn't crash at all (could be subjective as I had my PC upgraded);

Bad things:
- it needs polishing;
- it need bugfixes.

I am really up to play adventure mode, probably in multiplayer with friends, but I have too strong beta-tester-feelings when playing it. It's simply not ready yet.

Below is my old review, pros are still, cons are partially still true (which is very sad).


I must say it's very pretty and addictive game. But in current state I can't recommend it. It has huge potential, idea with building own colony and surviving is cool. But will it become a good game someday? I don't know.

- huge world, different biomes, fauna and flora;
- tier-progressing: wood, stone, etc.
- many interesting concepts: items builder, monorail, colony-management;
- vehicles!

- nothing (!) in game is polished yet, anything you do will smell alpha-version: digging (animation, sound and what is happening is desync), chopping trees (and looking inside empty model of tree);
- crappy UI: HD resolution will blow your eyes, "moving" windows (when you want to drag item), crapy inventory design (tabs in 3 categories);
- poor perfomance and high demanding engine (it crashes every hour no matter which settings);
- very steer learning curve without much assistance (save-load a lot or dig a lot, up to you);
- balance is poor: lack of farming motivation (digging 1000 resources is basically enough until end of game and it take only few minutes to get so much), lack of exploring motivation (you will find nothing interesting);
- quests: be ready to stumble or use reload when doing any quest, they are buggy as a hell;
- vehicles.

I started this game back in early alpha and really like the concept. Now that it's in beta and there has been significant's a great game! It runs a lot smoother and there is so much to do and create. I hope they add more and more content, but I'm pleased with what the game already has to offer.
