A0.85 Update: Custom Facial and Body Shape

September 1

If you remember, we had facial and body shapes working all the way back in a0.3. Then we took it out. The reason for that was the old system was using bones to change the skin shapes, while it worked great, it also took a lot of memory. So, after a year and half, we have a new system in place for this to work, through morph targets:

This might end up going in around a0.86 instead of a0.85 though, as we’re going through all the player wearable assets and changing their morph targets, and there are quite a bit.

On another note, we are aware that the multiplayer server was down for a few hours yesterday. This was caused by Steam login servers going offline for a bit, but why the server didn't reconnect to Steam after Steam was back up, we're still looking into it (as we should have fixed this the last time this happened).

A0.85 Update: Swamp Biome

August 25

We’ve been working on a bunch of new assets for A0.85, here are some concept art for the swamp biome for you to enjoy. The swamp biome is to the east of the southern grasslands, across the bay. It’s a flat area extending from the ocean to the south until it hits the high cliffs of the crater rim to the north. It’s a mix of wetlands and sink pits, populated by animals large and small, many of which poisonous and hunt by surprise.

About the Game

In Planet Explorers, it is the year 2287, one of the first colony ships sent out by Earth arrives at the planet Maria, in the Epsilon Indi Star System. During its landing sequence, something appears in front of the massive ship that causes it to lose control and crash into the planet. Some of the colonists survive in lifeboats, but what they find is an unforgiving land filled with creatures ready to outlast the visitors from Earth. Now the survivors must explorer, gather, build, create, fight, and ultimately, build a new home.

Game Modes

Planet Explorers will feature single and multiplayer modes.

In single player there are 3 distinct selections

  • Story Mode – Story mode is the main meat and bones of the game, it is the action-adventure-rpg-somewhat-4X segment, offering npcs, missions, colony building, farming, ranching, training, diplomacy, and of course, a storyline that you can follow or ignore. This story features a 17X8km world map with many unique character, landscapes, biomes, locations, and over 100 types of potential enemies. Even though we’ve made it seem like a very action oriented game in the trailers, in reality, players can choose to not fight so much as to just plant a farm, make some food, keep the colonists alive, negotiate with the sentient aliens, and defend the perimeter from the local life forms. That can still eventually arrive at the ending. And yes, there is an ending.

  • Adventure Mode – This mode is based on a procedural map generated from a seed. Currently, it comes in a 40X40 kilometer map. Players will be able to complete random missions, defeat bosses, and explore different landscapes in the mode and eventually be able to setup conditions that they want to play (such as tower defense or attack an alien camp). This mode will also feature survival gameplay. The randomization in this mode will eventually pull in player made objects and locations so that a world will always feature something new and unique.

  • Build Mode – In this mode, there are no enemies and an infinite amount of building material. It also currently comes in a 40X40km map. Players will be able to build whatever they want in this mode, including everything in the Creations Editor. Think of this as the perfect testing ground to test everything you build. Or…it’s your place to build your garden without ever worrying about the pesky aliens.

Multiplayer allows Local Area Network and player hosted servers. It features several modes but some are still on the drawing board or going through technical trials so the final result is still in flux. Players playing multiplayer should be able to bring at least one of their created objects into multiplayer games, be it a sword, gun, or vehicle.

  • Coop – Coop comes in many selections, such as adventure mode, tower defense mode, build mode, etc. This is pretty much an open world sandbox with a max of 32 players (this number still needs to be stress tested).

  • Versus – This mode allows teams of up to 16 players to battle against 16 players from another team. We allow full terrain manipulation in this mode. Currently, it's a point based system where one team wins if they reach a certain point level based on kills, built objects, resources mined, etc.

This review is as of update [A0.85] and may change as the game progresses.

When I first seen the game over a year ago I realized not much has changed.

Never heard of pathea before but this game might put them on the map if they can execute it properly.


+ Stunning art design/concept art (Impressive)
+ Able to build colony
+ Amazing build functionality (Near perfect)
+ Creation Editor to create vehicles, weapons, objects, vtols
+ Open world voxel game
+ Never lags even on full detail at full view distance (If it dose this is your computer or you got to many turrents up)
+ Resource scanning (In games like mincraft dig anywhere, this game keeps you moving and building mining camps)
+ Find NPCs and equip them for your colony
+ Object editor (I built my own flag and it worked great)
+ Power generators to power things


- It's listed as a survival game, but doesn't ever feel that way (You can stand somewhere ALL NIGHT and most likely live)
- Once you have a home monsters can't get to you (Except the robots, I'M firing my laser!)
- Unfun no skill needed combat (Minecraft has better combat, and that's saying a lot)
- Vehicle collision is awful (Tried to use my tank to climb up to get on a rock and fell into the tank and had to load a save, one guy online built a siege tower and couldn't ever use it)
- Some mook is attaching grenades to my wooden arrows (Some effects are cheesy)
- NPC's are gods that walk among us (Balancing issues, 2 of them killed a Coelodonta Greenback rhino in under 5 seconds)
- planet explorers? Other than biomes, cretures and caverns nothing to explore in adventure mode
- Needs cave systems you can access from above ground in adventure mode (Hopefully big enough to get lost in, and hopefully a cave exclusive resource to give you a reasoned to go into the dark and scary caves)
- Cant edit natural landscape in build mode (Ex. Place Islands or Landscape around your structures)
- Cant play adventure mode on build mode maps I make/download
- Easy to become to powerfull for the game world to remain fun (Hopefully this is solved with moon travel)
- Starting adventure mode with a alredy built town, where is the survival aspect?

Don't think they will get it right>

>"Negotiation with aliens, War with aliens" This is the bigest thing being talked about with this game. A diplomacy system sounds incredible and would open this game up to strategy gamers. But will probably end up a quick and weird one time dialog option. It would be cool to fight your way out of a war chefs village after you insult him and break trade agreements or even have a rival tribe join your faction because your fear of there army
>"Story Editor" Would be great to add NPCs (Even hostile)
>"Missions to the moons" (Like build a ship for outer space and fly in it there? Go home pathea your drunk!)

* My friends are all going to wait until full release because of all the early access letdowns that have come out in the past, and I think they might be onto something
* Terraria, Minecraft, Starbound and more had an area that looks hellish that you could go as your level got higher (Hope to see this in planet explorers
* They need to make explosion and escape pod noises in the opening cut scene and get rid of the talking children it kills the mood of the game
* Story mode probally will end up a 30-70 hour game so I hope they pack tons of content into adventure mode
* My girlfriend dose not like very many games but the sci-fi aspect intrigues her (Gives me somthing other than NPCs to shoot at ;) )

Some reviewers think "this is the next big step". Some think they "wasted more money on early access indie trash".

Wait. The game has great potential, but it is not quite ready. The biggest current problem is the lack of ballance. Gameplay jumps up sharply and then plateaus for a long time -- jump, plateau, repeat.

For crafting, the game started well, but soon became boring. I spent a few days hacking at trees, trading, and crafting simple items. Much too quickly, though, I gained access to advanced recipes, thereby skipping about 80% of the game's content.

Difficulty is similarly unbalanced, with roughly 3 levels: wild animals, aliens, and giant robots. Leaning how to kill the aliens was a fun challenge. The giant robots, however, are perhaps 10-times more difficult to kill, and there are no enemies between these two levels of difficulty.

Survival is way too easy, and without that pressure, gameplay has no tension or excitement.

A.I. feels very basic. The wild animals exhibit no complex behaviors; they don't socialize, mate, eat, sleep, or communicate. They are nothing more than wandering bags of meat. The aliens, who should be intelligent, are glaringly stupid, and this ruins immersion.

Visually, the game is gorgeous, and I absolutely love exploring the fantasy world. Just be warned, though, that gameplay is loose and sloppy. I've stopped playing because I don't want to spoil the game for myself.

Alot to say here...
This is a story worth telling: Yours.
This game is in Alpha but shows more promise to be a huge hit than most others I've seen. It is the future and you are on a ship heading to a distant planet to colonize it. As you begin landing preperations you hit something in orbit and the ship crashes to the surface.
You wake on a grass- grass on this planet anyway- grass covered valley. Your escape craft smashed half burried in the new planet's soil, a crew member is injured sitting nearby and you are her only hope to survive. You must hike over a hill in the distance to bring a doctor to help her. Luck has it, he survived as well.
You learn that other escape ships have landed around the planet and you need to find them. To do this you must EXPLORE.
Okay. That is roughly the first ten minutes of the game.
The rest is literally up to you.
You must gather resources from the planet to survive. You have a handy replicator in your pocket and as rewards the people you help give you some "scripts" that you add to it, then when you have the needed supplies it can create what you need. It is slightly difficult for example to make a working weapon you may need two or three componants. Raw metal or wood and some maybe refined items. The refined items would have to be made ahead of time from the needed resources they call for. Once you ave all the needed building blocks you choose how many to make and press the button. Easypeasy.
You start with wood tools and weapon and as you find other resources you can build better stuff.
I hate to disapoint but their ar no zombies in this game.
The main currency is meat. You get meat from... Thats it boys and girls! Animals. This planet has alot too. The creatures they have made to inhabit the planet are... interesting. The seem to mostly be six limb based and multi-eyed. Very cool all give a feel of alien and I found myself running to the next hill thinking "Wow, what the heck is that?"
You interact with left and right clicks after equiping the correct tool. To fight you left click with weapon. To gather you right click. You have a portable scanner you can use to scan the area around you to look for resources so you know where to dig. Probably alot more I didn't try but what I did manage to check out looked good.
The planet has a day/night cycle and when it gets dark mean buglike creatures that are very aggressive come out to feed. On you. Thats very bad. They emerge from the vast underground caverns that are everywhere under your feet and if you tunnel a mineshaft into one of these caverns you better have some good weapons. And a light source. Because it is dark and dangerous.
All this is played in the single player mode from your computer. An online peer hosted multi-player option is available with play modes of: Adventure, Versus and Build. I tryed Adventure and found them to be alittle buggy and some lagged alot. you have the option to host your own but you must do some port forwarding and I had no luck with that.
If the devs of Planet Explorers keep up the pace, this will be a fine addition to your library if you enjoy adventure.
I believe it is made with the Unity Engine so the games graphics are fair and the models are slightly cartoony, with some animation flaws and simplistic actions. The maps are gianormous!! With many types of biomes.
I have read some of the ideas they have for the future and am impressed and waiting to see it implemented. Entire player created worlds you can visit. All kinds of ecosystems. Fully player DESIGHNED weapons, armor, vehicles, housing and more. In fact an in game building tool allows you to add texture and colors as well as the look of alot of things already. Not to be confused with the standard building in the game anyway...did I mention it is a voxel based game- You can alter the ground's look and build structures via the "minecraft" like build system.
This promises to give adventure, exploreing, building, gathering fun for many, many hours with endless possability for replay.
Dang forgot the natives- big, armored, flame throwing owners of the new planet you dropped onto... And boss fights with giant robots and flying things and....Oh nevermind. You will find them... Of course they could find you too...

This is definitely a great game with a bright future. Even though it's in Alpha, it still has a lot of content and things to explore.

The in-game creation editor allows you to make pretty much whatever your heart desires in terms of weapons, shields, vehicles, and decorations. I was never an artsy kind of guy in terms of drawing or modeling, but it is fairly simple to figure out how to work the controls for the editor. Also, there is a small built-in tutorial along with of a bunch of help amongst the community.

There is also a build mode that allows you to place blocks and build structures. Unlike many other games of this type, it allows you to build multiple blocks at once through dragging vertically / horizontally, and offers you various shapes such as cubes, spheres, cylinders, cones, and much more. Along with this, you can also enter a free-view mode, which makes building much easier to control and look over.

I haven't played the single-player campaign to its fullest yet, but it has been nice so far. I have primarily been playing on my multiplayer server with a couple of friends, and have been creating and exploring for many hours. Personally, the game is much more fun when you have others to play with, since you can go on adventures or see what others created themselves.

To server owners: I personally prefer hosting a server from the game itself by going to Multiplayer > Host. I say this because the server controls are a bit iffy right now, and from what I understand, the "correct" way to shut down the server is to find it in the multiplayer list, select it and hit 'Delete'. With this being the case, the admin of the server is whichever character created it, and thus, they are the only ones who can do the process stated above. However, when hosting it from a .BAT file or whatnot, there is no specified character as an owner. As such, the only way I've found to shut it down is to either just exit out of it, or kill the process if using batchmode. Of course, there could be something I'm missing entirely, and I'm sure this will be refined more in the future.

I'm rambling now so I'll just start to rap this up with some of the current, noticeable issues

* Crafting currently seems to be split up between singleplayer / multiplayer, e.g there's some stuff you can apparently craft offline but not online...doesn't really affect gameplay that much though

* The camera can feel kind of unrealistic and annoying to control, but they're supposedly redoing it entirely in the next update, so we'll see
* First and third person are both options (use scroll-wheel to change between perspectives / zoom in and out)

* Entities (players, vehicles, mobs, etc) can sometimes fall through the world (primarily when in vehicles going at fast speeds for players [~100+ Km/h])

* NPCs appear to multiply in multiplayer each time the server is restarted (e.g. a town will spawn all of it's NPCs...server restarts...those NPCs spawn back, on top of another set of NPCs.)
* Their town decorations seem to do the same (some houses end up with 5 doors on top of eachother, etc)

* Along with that, objects such as turrets sometimes don't spawn in or fall through the world when spawning in in multiplayer

Over all, as many other reviews have said, this is an Alpha game. If you buy it, expect some bugs and crashes. That's why there is a notification telling you this game is in Alpha. I myself have only encountered a couple bugs in game and maybe one crash or two. However, I don't know how other people's computers will handle it and what their experience may be like. All I can say is that if you don't want to deal with bugs or possible crashes, then I'd suggest waiting a while for it to become a bit more stable and then buy it.

Currently, I'd rate it a 10/10 for an Alpha build, as it is honestly much more than I would've expected.

I have only played the singleplayer story mode so far so I'm basing my experience on that bit.
The game also includes a build mode, and even online co-op play among others which I will definitely be trying out later.

The game offers a day-night cycle which is faster than real life, but still long enough to have an impact on your plans and adventures. The nighttime is pretty dark and you will have to use torches, headlights, flashlights or other sources of lighting to find your way around the landscape.

This game is in a really good state for an early access game! I would recommend this game to anyone who likes survival, exploration, crafting, and building games.

If you like survival, exploration, crafting and building this is totally the game for you!
You can craft anything from tools to guns, building modules, sentry guns, you name it. There's a lot of different crafting materials you can gather such as wood, stone, iron, copper, tin, different types of plants and more.

The game plays very well and runs smoothly (> 60 fps) on highest settings on my quad core i7 920 (3.2 Ghz OC) with 6 GB RAM and a GTX 770 GPU.

The terrain deformation is absolutely the best I've ever seen. You can literally mine out a cave or structure the way you want it.
It's a voxel based game which means the terrain deforms a lot more natural than a block game would. I can see why this is one of the strongest selling points for this game. This opencl (cuda?) technique the devs are talking about does really seem to do a lot for this game!

The textures are not "next-gen" at the moment, but very much acceptable for such a complex game. I guess this could be improved once they near a final release. It's definitely not game breaking though.

The combat is very acceptable. It's pretty straight forward, click to smash (a la minecraft) but that's totally fine with me to be honest. You are also rooted into place when performing actions which is awesome and makes combat somewhat harder.

Now, this is an early access game, but the only negative things I've been able to find after an hour or so of gameplay is that the world feels a bit empty. It doesn't feel static, since there's a lot to see like different types of animals and foliage/trees/mountains. It could feel a little more vibrant.

The music is fantastic, although there is only one song which loops. It doesn't get annoying because it's a really calm and smooth composition. It runs for a while too so it doesn't get repetitive at all.
Sometimes the combat music can get a little annoying when you're entering and leaving combat in fast intervals.

There is voice acting for most if not all conversations so far. Some of the voice acting is great and some not so great, but also by far not the worst I've experienced. Could use a little more work in some areas though.

There are some basic quests to help you figure out how crafting and gathering works which is great. The game really does a good job of easing you into the game so far. But it doesn't hold your hand too much either, which is a great thing.

I haven't touched the real storyline so far, so I'll have to see how well the story is played out. But I have high hopes!

This game is definitely worth the money and I would certainly recommend this game in it's current state!
