What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are a small studio, while we have the ambition, we do not have the resources to simple finish the game and release with all the promised features. Early Access allows us to have the financial resources to finish the product while at the same time allow players to help us figure out and solve problems in design and execution.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“This game should reach a final release candidate by around mid-2016.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The final version will be a smooth experience that allows players to build and share entire game worlds through the world editor. The main game storyline will be complete with many new animations to draw the player into the world.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We are in beta.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No, it will be the same price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We listen to all the comments posted on the Steam boards and our own message board, we do not agree with all the suggestions, but we do consider them. If there are very good suggestions, they do make it into the game.”

Beta 0.6 Released!

We ran into some issues while adding a storyline to the adventure mode, so that has been pushed to the next build, again. But we’re getting pretty close there. Game balancing is also being focused on for the next build. For this build, we’ve fixed a lot of bugs, added some new things, and tweaked a bunch. The biggest change is with the replicator. We’re trying to separate the handheld replicator with the colony one. So that means we’re fine tuning the replication speed. The colony replicator with workers will be much, much faster than the handheld, this is still being worked on for the next build, so it’s not completely in yet. We hope to hear some feedback on this topic. Next build will be out next Friday-ish.

About This Game

In Planet Explorers, it is the year 2287, one of the first colony ships sent out by Earth arrives at the planet Maria, in the Epsilon Indi Star System. During its landing sequence, something appears in front of the massive ship that causes it to lose control and crash into the planet. Some of the colonists survive in lifeboats, but what they find is an unforgiving land filled with creatures ready to outlast the visitors from Earth. Now the survivors must explorer, gather, build, create, fight, and ultimately, build a new home.

Game Modes

Planet Explorers will feature single and multiplayer modes.

In single player there are 3 distinct selections

  • Story Mode – Story mode is the main meat and bones of the game, it is the action-adventure-rpg-somewhat-4X segment, offering npcs, missions, colony building, farming, ranching, training, diplomacy, and of course, a storyline that you can follow or ignore. This story features a 17X8km world map with many unique character, landscapes, biomes, locations, and over 100 types of potential enemies. Even though we’ve made it seem like a very action oriented game in the trailers, in reality, players can choose to not fight so much as to just plant a farm, make some food, keep the colonists alive, negotiate with the sentient aliens, and defend the perimeter from the local life forms. That can still eventually arrive at the ending. And yes, there is an ending. Story mode also features coop with other players.

  • Adventure Mode – This mode is based on a procedural map generated from a seed. Currently, it comes in a 40X40 kilometer map. Players will be able to complete random missions, defeat bosses, and explore different landscapes in the mode and eventually be able to setup conditions that they want to play (such as tower defense or attack an alien camp). This mode will also feature survival gameplay. The randomization in this mode will eventually pull in player made objects and locations so that a world will always feature something new and unique.

  • Build Mode – In this mode, there are no enemies and an infinite amount of building material. It also currently comes in a 40X40km map. Players will be able to build whatever they want in this mode, including everything in the Creations Editor. Think of this as the perfect testing ground to test everything you build. Or…it’s your place to build your garden without ever worrying about the pesky aliens.

Multiplayer allows Local Area Network and player hosted servers. It features several modes but some are still on the drawing board or going through technical trials so the final result is still in flux. Players playing multiplayer should be able to bring at least one of their created objects into multiplayer games, be it a sword, gun, or vehicle.

  • Coop – Coop comes in many selections, such as adventure mode, tower defense mode, build mode, etc. This is pretty much an open world sandbox with a max of 32 players (this number still needs to be stress tested).

  • Versus – This mode allows teams of up to 16 players to battle against 16 players from another team. We allow full terrain manipulation in this mode. Currently, it's a point based system where one team wins if they reach a certain point level based on kills, built objects, resources mined, etc.

After a year, I'm deleting my old recommended review.
This game has not improved, in fact I dare say it has gotten much worse.

The game is like a sci-fi Minecraft, to put it simply, and when I first got it I saw a huge amount of potential. However, over a year of updates later and we have a barely cohesive game that totally misses the mark. With many features still missing or totally unusable.

The new movement physics and animations are down-right terrible. Characters who SHOULD be military have awful, slouchy postures. You can walk up 90 degree walls, you get stuck in doorways, you get stuck on absolutely nothing at all..just a random collision box in the middle of nowhere. The animations are stiff and bizarre, lacking seamless transitions. They haven't touched the character creation in over a year. Same content, nothing new. Characters look goofy no matter what you do.

The world generation for custom worlds is terrible, with seed sliders that you have to study and experiment with to get playable worlds. Most of the time you'll get a huge ocean with no land at all.
That's fun right?
Turn down those settings and you get huge, barren low lands.
The draw distance is barely acceptable and even on decent systems you can outrun it on a vehicle, which results in you flying or driving into a void.
The town generation always looks artificial and weird plopping a small town in the middle of the ocean, or carved into a canyon without any sense of realism.

The voice acting they added feels poorly casted with clearly young people playing old people and 'doing an old man voice'. The mixing is bad with the music, by default, being much louder than the voice acting.
The sounds are, in most cases, broken or missing. Turn off the music and immerse yourself in total silence. because worlds don't have ambient sound effects.... Just.. Total silence...
Shoot a gun and be amazed at sound effects that.. might play.. sometimes.
The music is okay, and they remade the menu song and I have to give them credit. It's a great song.
The rest of the OST is hit or miss, but poorly executed regardless, with songs sometimes fading out totally or switching, only to switch again to a different song, and then switch back. This happened alot near oceans.

Combat is a horrible experience. Because of most of the issues already mentioned nothing can save the combat. With sounds that barely play, animations that look stiff or broken, and ♥♥♥♥ poor physics I had no desire to fight anything.

This game is far from being in beta, and if they release it anything like it is right now, i'll feel sorry for anyone purchasing it.

story mode, adventure mode and a build mode. with a lot of character and world options. a massive array of parts to build whatever you can think of. Extremely robust custom build system, your imagination is your own limitation. mmo or fps type preset controls, although a little awkward at first using a ranged weapon. it's not bad once you get acclumated.
large array of unique creatures.
build your own settlement, npcs have unique skills to enhance your settlement, also to help defend against random attacks from the native creatures.
great overall sandbox game.

since this is early access and the game is in beta, there are still bugs from time to time.

I have started playing this game 3 times now twice in Alpha stage and now at beta 0.60 while some things have improved other things have gone severely backwards, in my previous two attempts I was able to follow story mode up until the point I reached a city in the game - I wont say to much more than that as to not spoil it for others, now part of that story line has gone completely west stopping the player proceeding to that point, definately a huge step backwards in other respects the game has moved forward in playability but there is not much point if you can not complete more each time a version is released. In addition each time a new version is released you end up having to start from scratch which has become an utter pain in the @ss and the iso system which was initially fun has become dreadfully painfull. default iso's for players who don't want to mess with that sort of stuff but just play the game need to be added - this could be a great fun game if it ever gets finished but it's taking so long that one begins to doubt it ever will be,

So here are the pros/cons for this game. Pros: Runs with a gtx 580 with max settings and i get from 66 fps to 38 in some areas. 38 being areas with lots of animals/raining/forest/ floating rocks mix together. the reason this is good is because the recomended is a 760 gtx. its looks great, i have run into no bugs, lots of things to do like, building, exploring, and just strait up murder of all the animals if you ples. ok here are the cons:when it rains it goes down like 15 fps, some animals dont spawn that offten and when they do they die before you can get to them, animations are not the best but not the worst. thats about it from me, and yes i am on windows and not mac so i dont know what the mac vers. is like

EARLY ACCESS REVIEW
Very cool builder. Item design system shows promise but needs a lot of polish. The crafting system as a whole takes some time to get used to, and structure building isn't really functional yet - but a damned good start!

I'd like to see the updates be more substantial and frequent. Selling an EA title doesn't give the developer permission to never finish.

*************************
Over two years later...

The game is frozen inside of some sort of engine upgrade limbo. The small studio had to outsource most of the coding change over to other studios when moving up to a new game engine. What we now have is an almost incoherent collection of low quality features that Pathea is trying desperately to tie together and smooth out. Many of updates you see are from these contractors patching their shoddy work. It is a shame. I am not sure that it can be salvaged in time for a real game to be playable.

Uninstalled.

It's definitely fun at it's current state, and the developers have been steadily pushing out updates for the past couple years.
I haven't tried the last couple betas, but vehicle handling is kind of dull? not really physics based I guess would work?

There are still bugs to be quashed and performance could be improved, I would recommend purchasing this if it's the type of game you like. It is one of those resource grindy games, it comes with a decent story, and it's fun to play with friends (story can be in single or multiplayer).

Edit: Oh, and no ♥♥♥♥ing zombies

endless fun. Creative is a bit annoying with the blank seed giving the same map every time. It would be nice if there was a mode where it combined the infinite building materials with the adventure mode.

Plenty to do here. You can build just about anything you want. If your looking for a sandbox exploration game with a scifi theme, this might be what your looking for.

Really wanted to like this game but between loose controls (the character visibly stops after you finish pressing the movement button) awkward UI and controls (really? controlling your camera with your interact key?) and a design system that desperatley needs a tutorial and overhaul I cannot recommend it at this time.

Twice now I have tried to get through just the basic tutorial. I hate the camera view and can't figure out how to change it. If that was told to me by "Andy" I certainly missed it. If there is a way to get back the dialog for missions I certainly can't find it. I got as far as building and saving an ISO and then on the export it does nothing nothing nothing. I don't want to spend an hour trying to figure something out in a game. I checked inventory, tried to do it from the build menu. I saved a dirt wall and can't do anything with it so I can't complete this mssion so I can't move on in the tutorial (I'd be happy to skip it because I REALLY DON'T CARE right now). Sure I could go watch youtube videos but I don't want to. So I quit. Again. We shall see if I bother with this game for a third time or not.
