What the developers have to say:

“Planet Explorers is an open world RPG for its single player mode, as in there's a storyline with an ending. The game is in alpha, there will be bugs and strange things that we can't explain. Since it's an RPG, there will be more bugs than other games of the voxel type. Also due to the RPG nature, each main update will be spaced by about a month. But due to the decent size of our team, each update will contain a lot of content. We do listen very closely to our players, so you will have an opportunity to impact the direction of the game.”

A0.86 Released

We've just released the a0.86 build of Planet Explorers on Steam. For this build, we've included the World Editor. The current World Editor is fairly rudimentary, but you can see the direction we’re going with it. The current game won’t be able read the output maps from the editor until a0.9 though. We’ll try to release a tutorial/documentation as soon as possible. For now, the World Editor is Windows only. Also included in this release are story bug fixes for a0.85 and the block LOD.

Looking forward, we have a0.9 coming up as well as Unity 5.0. We’re not sure if a0.9 will be using Unity 5.0 or not, it depends on when that comes out. We do know that there should be some significant improvements to lighting, physics, and optimization once we make the switch.

There will be a build before Christmas

We’ve been having lots of meetings regarding the progress of A0.9 this months. So far, the main objectives of a new ai behavior system, a new player movement system, a new ui, the world editor, and their incorporation into multiplayer are all moving forward, albeit at different speeds. The world editor is fairly stable and ready for player testing now, while the rest are still a month away at the earliest. So, we’ve decided to put out an a0.86 build before Christmas with the world editor. Before anyone gets too excited, the game can’t currently read the world editor maps yet (the a0.86 build is still based on the a0.85 branch, not the a0.9 branch), but most of the editing functions are in. We’ll try to put in an early version of the story editor as well if we can get it to work smoothly, no promises though.

Another thing to be included in a0.86 will be the block building system LOD. What this does is to allow block buildings to show up at the farthest terrain setting. We’ll also be testing in the future to see if we can get the resolution of blocks down to .25 meters from the current .5 meters.

We're going to have a video next week of the new player animations as well.

About This Game

In Planet Explorers, it is the year 2287, one of the first colony ships sent out by Earth arrives at the planet Maria, in the Epsilon Indi Star System. During its landing sequence, something appears in front of the massive ship that causes it to lose control and crash into the planet. Some of the colonists survive in lifeboats, but what they find is an unforgiving land filled with creatures ready to outlast the visitors from Earth. Now the survivors must explorer, gather, build, create, fight, and ultimately, build a new home.

Game Modes

Planet Explorers will feature single and multiplayer modes.

In single player there are 3 distinct selections

  • Story Mode – Story mode is the main meat and bones of the game, it is the action-adventure-rpg-somewhat-4X segment, offering npcs, missions, colony building, farming, ranching, training, diplomacy, and of course, a storyline that you can follow or ignore. This story features a 17X8km world map with many unique character, landscapes, biomes, locations, and over 100 types of potential enemies. Even though we’ve made it seem like a very action oriented game in the trailers, in reality, players can choose to not fight so much as to just plant a farm, make some food, keep the colonists alive, negotiate with the sentient aliens, and defend the perimeter from the local life forms. That can still eventually arrive at the ending. And yes, there is an ending.

  • Adventure Mode – This mode is based on a procedural map generated from a seed. Currently, it comes in a 40X40 kilometer map. Players will be able to complete random missions, defeat bosses, and explore different landscapes in the mode and eventually be able to setup conditions that they want to play (such as tower defense or attack an alien camp). This mode will also feature survival gameplay. The randomization in this mode will eventually pull in player made objects and locations so that a world will always feature something new and unique.

  • Build Mode – In this mode, there are no enemies and an infinite amount of building material. It also currently comes in a 40X40km map. Players will be able to build whatever they want in this mode, including everything in the Creations Editor. Think of this as the perfect testing ground to test everything you build. Or…it’s your place to build your garden without ever worrying about the pesky aliens.

Multiplayer allows Local Area Network and player hosted servers. It features several modes but some are still on the drawing board or going through technical trials so the final result is still in flux. Players playing multiplayer should be able to bring at least one of their created objects into multiplayer games, be it a sword, gun, or vehicle.

  • Coop – Coop comes in many selections, such as adventure mode, tower defense mode, build mode, etc. This is pretty much an open world sandbox with a max of 32 players (this number still needs to be stress tested).

  • Versus – This mode allows teams of up to 16 players to battle against 16 players from another team. We allow full terrain manipulation in this mode. Currently, it's a point based system where one team wins if they reach a certain point level based on kills, built objects, resources mined, etc.

Early Access Review
In short: Yes, I recommend this game. It's beautiful and fun to play alone or with friends. Just remember it is early acces alpha and give it time for updates. It's already improved leaps and bounds in the past 9 months.

This is actually the first game I took the "early access" chance on and I don't regret it! It has however, spoiled me with high expectations for other early access titles, lol.

I love building games and for me, this was the first voxel builder that let me work with different shapes. Awesome.
It also has furniture and decorations. The creatures in this game have a wonderfully alien feel to them and the mega-huge boss mobs are very impressive and inspires a definite "holy $#!+, we are supposed to kill THAT?" *runs away* feeling. Exploring is great, even early on before you have the materials to craft the ridiculous aircraft and such, you can make jet packs and grapling hooks for some seriously fun travel through the world.

The feature I'm most looking forward to at the moment is farming to be fully functional in multiplayer mode since that's where I spend 99% of my time, playing with my friends and family on our lan based servers.

Combat needs to be a little more interesting but they've already stated they're working on that and sooo much more. The devs regularly communicate with their players and are regularly pumping out updates and hotfixes. They're also working on making the single-player story mode into multi-player which was a huge request from the players.

Yes, it's alpha, there are still bugs though most of the game-breaking-frustrating bugs seem to have been taken care of since I started last spring. This is without a doubt one of my favorite games I found on Steam. A hidden gem of sorts, and while it isn't finished, the progress it's made already is phenomenal and I always look forward to the next major patch to see what craziness they've managed to pull of next!

Definitely going to have to recommend this one to anyone who happens across it, great way to kill time with your friends (or single player). The game still has a lot of development ahead of it and so far what is available is amazing!

Even once you've covered all the in-game content, the creation system and the player made equipment and vehicles are all incredible, on top of that the developers are actively updating this game (last version was Dec 29, how's that for active!) so if you find yourself bored after the first 20 hours, you will still have lots of fun to look forward to in the future.

In summary, great survival game, good looking (albiet cartoony) graphics, the hunting is fun, the mining is fun, the building is... well, a lil less fun but I imagine they have lots more tweaking to come in all categories. Buy this game and enjoy!

This game is really fun for an early access, although I waited until a steam sale and got it for 14.99 (gotta save those shekels, oy vey!).

It's like minecraft with great visuals set on some planet with dinosaurs. And jetpacks, planes, boats and bikes. That you build, from scratch in a CAD editor that is actually very simple to learn. It also has a story.

It has bugs, nothing too major apart from pathing issues with NPCs.

I give it 9 out of 10 yarmulkes.

Got it.
Launched a world.
Didn't do the tutorial.
Got rekt by a giant robot.
Played campaign.
Got a glider.
Fought a dragon.
Brang a robot into a small town with people.
Used food as currency.
Made my very own ATV.
Made my very own Helicopter.
Flew around in my helipcopter.

Now final question... Is it a good game? Most defiently YES. In its current state it is playable. You can have hours of fun in this especially with friends. At it's current state 8/10. Just imagine minecraft with cryengine, Then you get something like this but without cryengine. Your imagination is the limit.

great open world sandbox game with a ton of customization. still a bit glitchy though and follow missions are a pain.

things this game needs

1.custom armor

2.animal breeding and maybe riding too

3.better combat because sword fighting is just clicking and also its very glitchy

4.better terrain generation in adventure mode its only got the generation for the plains biome

5.better ai for allies and creatures

despite a lot of problems though its still a great game.

This game is shaping up nicely. Think Minecraft with completely customizable weapons and vehicles.

I haven't dug deep into the story mode yet, but playing adventure mode, particularly on a custom server with friends, is INSANELY FUN! We've been through a few world wipes as bugs get ironed out, maps / biomes / gameplay changes, etc - but we build again, make outrageous machines to run around in, and just enjoy the game.

When the devs finish this, it's going to be big. It's already a great game, and it keeps getting better with each build.

This game could use some work but aside from the occasional bugs and glitches, It's not that bad for an early access game. I mean HECK! I'd go ahead and say that this game is BRILLIANT for an early access game!

The single-player mode is fun but it does take a long time to get around so I recommend getting some supplies fast and building a vehicle if you want to explore.

The Co-Op is in a sense more fun than single player but is a little glitchier than the forementioned.

Honestly I had more fun just exploring and finding all the wierd aliens I could! My favourite landscape or biome would need to be the the canyon area but all the different landscapes combine well and feel quite natural; The creatures on the otherhand are by far my favourite aspect of the game!
The amount of animals is amazing, with the sizes ranging from the tiny Vulpes Haola to the the enormous Testudo Mariturtle.

The best ai would probably be the unnamed cliff lizard thing in the canyon biome, It took me Four hours to find just one and even the the ai got the best of me....

MMO looking, Single player feel, and ALOT of craftability. The game has huge monsters, alot of searching for ore, and alot of fun trying to figure out how there is rain coming into your house when you have 3 roofs. I got the game in the beginning stages of early acess and may have changed since then.

This game is incredibly immersive, although I do get alot of random crashes during gameplay. I'm assuming due to my spec and also the fact this game is still early access.

Regardless of this it is still addictive and I find myself constantly re-launching the game after a crash. Any other game I would shrug off my list.

It is worth playing but be prepared for the "early access" is my summary.

I don't even know where to start. As others have said, this game is exactly what I've sought for a long time. In a nutshell, they managed to take the positive aspects of various sandbox crafting games and made it fun and removed the tendency to become boring.

I love this game and can't stop playing it. I can't say the concept of the game is simple because there are so many directions it can go. There isn't a clear direction on the devs' part, and I mean that in a good way. They've built a really solid foundation and I'm hanging on the edge of my seat waiting for the next update.

I came across this game looking for something that gives me open-world exploration and crafting. This game delivers that and then some. Easily one of the best games I have in my library.

It is tempting to try to compare this to games like Minecraft, Starbound, Terraria, etc., and it wouldn't be wrong to do so: there are a lot of similarities, and feels like some of the devs either worked on one of those or took a lot of inspiration from them, but then again many of these aren't really new concepts. And in my opinion there's nothing wrong with borrowing ideas that work.

Where this game really delivers is
  • graphics -- the lack of good graphics made the aforementioned games quickly boring for me;
  • the Creation Editor, where you can build fairly detailed models from base materials and attach crafted assets to make fairly complicated structures such as custom weapons, vehicles (land, air, AND sea), etc. -- the CE really is a game within a game and I've spent a good chunk of time just creating things there;
  • and the beginnings of a pretty nice "town management" system; you craft the various components of your village, invite npcs to live with you, and assign various tasks. not a lot to it right now but it has the makings of a really fun mini-game

... and that's all above and beyond (what i find to be the very zen-like process of) mining and scavenging raw materials to build with, and doing actual exploration. The time in-game shown as of right now (just over 38 hours) is how long it took me to get through the "story" part of the game, and several quests are incomplete, so it just goes to show that they intend to do more with that part of it. As expected, there are plenty of bugs to work out, but the game is so engaging I barely notice them, except for the ones that break quests at which point i have to reload from a last save or something, but overall the game is amazingly well done given it's still in alpha.

This game easily gets a 10/10.

Unlike some that have posted negative reviews, I can play this for hours without crashes or other issues, so I can't speak to those issues. What I can say is that the game itself is fun and with the ability to craft your own vehicles (and other items) from scratch, it is in a different category compared to other sandbox open world crafting games. There is a learning curve when it comes to using the editor to build things, but it isn't that hard to figure things out.

The game looks nice, the environment and mobs are varied, and it is a joy to simply explore the game world. The story mode has a few bugs, but you can still enjoy it and they're constantly working on improving things. I have not tried multiplayer yet, so no comment on that.

Out of the many games in early access that are in a similar genre, this one seems to have the most potential (my opinion) of them all. The game is fairly well along and the devs are both communicative and dedicated. Buy it now to support them or wait until it is finished, but either way get it...

Only 18 hours into the game on story mode, If I was able to make a game, it would be something like this. Massive modifications available. So far, it's been low on the resources for my computer as well...

I find it commical when an NPC is fallowing you, and gets stuck by a tree or small group of rocks, and you have to go back to get them, to show them how to get around the obstical.

The creatures moving around on the planet, do indeed resemble our prehistoric dinosaurs, in fact, that's what my daughter called them as she watched me play some.

I can't wait till the next major update, in the mean time, I will continue to play... Eventually I hope to get my husband in game with me, to run around together, he likes to kill, where I like to build, so I could use him as a body guard while I gather the materials, and help when he needs a hand taking down a massive creature. That brings me to me making something that looked like a modle T car, and just like the Modle T, it got stuck on almost every bump and had issues climbing the hills. 2nd vehical, I made a 3 wheeler, with rubber tires, had no issues doing 40 uphill, even used it to take out one of the turtle shelled creatures with a forward cannon mounted on it... LOTS of health on that one... Ran out of energy, still can't recharge the Trike yet...

Keep up the great work! I look forward to seeing what comes next... to NPCs,"Stop calling me 'human', I am a Drow!"

about 20 hours later, got a power generator and base set up, and able to finally recharge my vehical, but as of yet, I see no way to repair vehicals... Spare fuel cell/replcaement till the vehical can be recharged? Portable Solar generator/repai bench? Who knows what they have planned next?

After a game crash (expected, being in Alpha stage), I decided to hop into build mode, just to work on some possible crafts(various vehicals and boats for multiple purposes, even made my own wooden door), and got to see the best items in game. As of right now, there is no way for me to edit some of the items, like make them myself. Shortly before the crash I discovered the in game item enhancer, and loven it. I hope there is a way to repair your vehicals eventually. It really could of come in handy on my first breeze through. Don't quite understand the Air-Battleship yet, seen it as a buildable object while in Create mode. Made a steel sword, (only available hilts are wood, stone and copper) damage was squeezed to 61.2, doesn't compair to the energy sword with a really high attack. I am going for semi realistic weapon wise, It made for a nice long sword at least. And made something that looks like a steel panel pulled from one of the 'life boats' and fashioned it into a shield, made of steel and looks neat as well.

Now it's time to start a new game, this will be fun! Going to try a different build idea for the colony. I am Drow after all...

Problem with the Linux client, in case your character instantly dies when entering the world, and instantly dies again after revive, put this in startup options (without the quotes):

"LC_ALL=en_US.utf8 %command%"

It turns out there is no OpenCL hardware support for Mac and Linux Ubuntu(*), which means really terrible performance unfortunately.

(*) Apparently due to broken nvidia 331 proprietary driver. In order to fix this, you might have some luck with this approach (in the order mentioned below):

- apt-get install nvidia-cuda-toolkit
- apt-get install ocl-icd-opencl-dev
- reboot
- revert to "legacy 304 proprietary driver" from nvidia
- reboot

Use at your own risk, the driver is outdated and might break other games, your cat might choke and the antichrist make his appearance. If it does work and none of the above happens, it does run very well.

Kinda on the fence with this one due to the many hoops I had to jump to get it to run properly, still thumbs up, as it is a beautiful game and kinda sticks out of the whole sandbox crafting openworld somewhatminecraftish crowd.

Now, the terrain (and terrain manipulation) in this one is really well done, is is actually quite fun digging a cave and putting stuff in there.

So are the characters, they have a very unique touch to them.

The crafting also appears to be a rather unique approach, havent had time to check it out in-depth yet though.

First of, this is a great game. Just the jetpack-glider combination alone, is almost worth the buying price (use the jetpack to gain altitude, then glide around the game world. lots of fun).
Furthermore there's an interesting storyline, and it's a builder game, where you can build all kinds of things, even your own colony, and inhabit it with npcs, that you can recruit from the various story areas.
Also, the game is still in development, so from time to time, new content become available, such as more main story, more gameworld, more build or npc options, and so on.

But there lies the biggest issue, from my perspective: The updates.
As each time a new update comes around, your savegame is no longer working.
The devs usually give out a savegame, so you can continue the storyline, from where it stopped last, which is okey, but it's just not good enough.

If you spend 40+ hours playing the game and building stuff, having to start all over each time there is an update, gets old REAL fast.
And for me, that is the deal breaker. Until savegames can be used from update to update, I will not recommend this game.

I must say it's very pretty and addictive game. But in current state I can't recommend it. It has huge potential, idea with building own colony and surviving is cool. But will it become a good game someday? I don't know.

- huge world, different biomes, fauna and flora;
- tier-progressing: wood, stone, etc.
- many interesting concepts: items builder, monorail, colony-management;
- vehicles!

- nothing (!) in game is polished yet, anything you do will smell alpha-version: digging (animation, sound and what is happening is desync), chopping trees (and looking inside empty model of tree);
- crappy UI: HD resolution will blow your eyes, "moving" windows (when you want to drag item), crapy inventory design (tabs in 3 categories);
- poor perfomance and high demanding engine (it crashes every hour no matter which settings);
- very steer learning curve without much assistance (save-load a lot or dig a lot, up to you);
- balance is poor: lack of farming motivation (digging 1000 resources is basically enough until end of game and it take only few minutes to get so much), lack of exploring motivation (you will find nothing interesting);
- quests: be ready to stumble or use reload when doing any quest, they are buggy as a hell;
- vehicles.

amazing game!!! probably one of the best games i’ve played in a long time, there is so much you can do. its like minecraft and terraria had a baby, then that baby had a baby with pure awesome.

the different game modes are great, story mode gives you a good feel for the game and is pretty fun to play through. but what makes this game amazing is the creative side, loads of items to create/ replicate, but the actual creation mode within the game OMG. pretty much think of something you want to make and bam you can do it. want a sick looking car just make it. theres a bit of a learning curve with it but it doesn’t take long to get the hang of.

As for it being early access, yeah you can tell in some parts of the game. Some NPC’s will give you the same mission over and over, the game locks up now and again, using ranged weapons with a energy shield on, takes down the shield (not sure if that ones intentional or not haha). Over all for an alpha not really a whole lot wrong with it. Hell its more polished then BF4 was at release.

Could not recommend the game more!! if your into adventure/exploration in open world get it, if your into creating/design get it. loads of fun

THANK YOU to the devs you guys have done an insane job on the game so far!!! keep up the good work :)
