Another stability update


  • -Fixed the athletics skill not increasing
  • -Fixed the "location" of characters when they ragdoll and slide down a hill
  • -Fixed wandering trader AI jittering and freaking out after staying in a town more than 6 hours
  • -Fixed the BUY button on houses not functioning
  • -Fixed 2 random crashes
  • -Fixed the crashdump zip getting a truncated filenam
  • -Fixed newly bought&freed slaves getting tagged as escapees when save/loaded
  • -Fixed again the walls, I had fixed the scales for them but there were still old, badly scaled collision files that i have now replaced
  • -Fixed the bugs with corpses, incorrect ragdolls, location etc

Mainly a hotfix for the save bug, I will work on the other bugs next.

  • Solved the savegame error where it didn't save your squad if most of them were knocked out
  • Walls were scaled differently. This was not supposed to be in the release version yet, they've been set back to normal again. Sorry for breaking your base walls. Super-sorry if you just rebuilt your base walls to match the new scales.
  • Fixed issue with alt+tab and fullscreen.
  • Fixed big fonts with resolutions larger than 1920.

Freeform gameplay in a seamless game world stretching over 400 square kilometers. The game will never seek to limit you or restrict your personal play style.

Dynamic, ever changing world. Support or hinder whoever you wish, or keep to yourself, the world won't stop moving. This is not just a "game", you are living and surviving in a simulated world.
Absolutely no Level-scaling. The world does not level up along with you, and the shops don't change their inventory to only items matching your level. At the start of the game almost everyone will be stronger than you, and survival will always be a struggle.
Realistic medical system that affects gameplay. A character with a wounded leg will limp or crawl and slow the party down, wounded arms means you must use your sword one-handed or not at all. Lose an eye and it will affect your field of vision. Blood loss means you can pass out, and the blood will attract predators. Exhaustion affects performance and is increased by equipment weight, weather, blood loss and thirst. Severed limbs will need expensive robotic replacements.
Intelligent AI that allows for characters to reason and work towards long-term goals and desires. Squads work together and carry their wounded to safety. Characters can be setup to take care of micromanagement for you.
Aid or oppose the various factions in the world while striving for the strength and wealth necessary to simply survive in the harsh desert.

Let me start by saying I love this game. Even with almost zero content and many on again off again minor issues they seem to be eternally tinkering with the game was fun to play. But its been four years. Still in alpha is fine and good ,but Its been four years with little change and only afew surface improvements and still zero content. They make about 4-6 patches a year and those tend to fix reacurring pathfinding issues or some minor bug that takes afew hours of coding to fix. They either dont have the time to devote to this project or they have all but given up on making it more then a shell. I still play from time to time when each time starting from scratch, but never more then afew hours as the bugs multiply and the content stays the same.

In case you don't want to read all of it, go straight to this mark <->

-So this is my review for Kenshi. I have played 57 hours and I can say (sadly) that right now, that's probably how far you're gonna go, there's not enough content yet. However, that doesn't mean it's a bad game, Kenshi is a great game that shows you how life is hard ¬¬ at the start but after a few hours you can see the progress and it gets cooler and cooler as the time passes.
-If you want to buy Kenshi as soon as possible: You'll have a lot of well spent hours after you get the hang of it.
-If you want to buy a full game: Wait patiently. They are working really hard and I'm sure that there will be at least 4 times more content by the end of next year.
-Slow development CAN'T be used as a negative trait, because Kenshi producers are not a big company like Ubisoft or EA, in fact they're only 6 ! (here's proof http://lofigames.com/about/about-us/ )
Also, if you think that a game this creative and complex can be easily made, programming is not as easy as you think,
One of my professors once said: "Developing a game is the programmer's biggest challenge"

Conclusion: If you want to see kenshi growing and have a lot of entertainment, buy it, you won't regret it.
If you want to buy a full game, keep an eye on the updates and wait until there's enough content for you.
Oh, I almost forgot, you can download a demo on kenshi's website. I don't know how much content is there, but it's probably enough to convince you into buying (or not).

I used to love the potential in this game but the charm has worn off of me. Why? Well several reasons:

For one it has taken them a very long time to develop after entering early access. Everybody has ideas over what early access means or not but getting money for a product under development, to me usually means that the investors expects the creator to start to accelerate development on the product, be reinvesting the money back into the product.

Or at least make it playable while it's being developed... the early access version has a lot of bugs that are left in the engine for now about a year after, and these bugs relate to characters getting stuck in stuff because their physics engine makes them clip through objects and they can't return to the movement grid so they just get stuck. That can be fixed by "picking up" a character, sure but it's not always prudent to do so. But what is worse is items persisting in the world and the NPCs in the game swarming to it - to pick it up, causing slowdowns as they navigate the movement grid and gameplay issues if they're hostile.

Other issues relate to Caravan guards not speaking to you, cutting off an important source of renevue, police chiefs not talking to you, cutting off another important source of revenue. Forcing you to rely on exploiting the AI to lure enemies near towns for the guard to slaughter foes, then you loot the bodies and sell the equipment in order to progress.

The game is also balanced in a very slow pace. You are asked to spend hours on it to progress. Your characters are generally very weak as well to begin with and I skill increase takes centuries to develop in the game for your characters.

Do I recommend this in it's current form? No, I do not, and being subscribed to it as an early access game is not enjoyable either since it's update pace is about 4 months per update. The updates themselves do contain quite a bit of content often. These last two have added a bunch of models and a few new features, but it has also introduced a bunch of in my opinion game breaking bugs that adds to the sluggishness of the progression.

It's simply not a good game to fall back on once many of the surrounding features are removed. Let it develop for a few more years before you invest in this product is my advice to you, when the game is more complete.

Kenshi was a very interesting, ambitious project in 2009. It was in roughly the same state when I first played it it in 2012. Coming back to it in 2015, expecting at least some form of late Beta, I was dismayed to instead find basically the same game, only with a few graphical updates.

I like that there is ambience music now, that was very necessary. It doesn't react to the situation though, so it's always the same tracks. I like the GUI update, it looks less less like a spreadsheet. Shadows, foliage and wildlife (read, a type of wild dog and the occasional caravan packbeast) make the world look less alien and artificial. The character creator was made nicer and easier to understand, although it still doesn't offer that much customization.
Combat can look rather nice, the blocking animations are well done.
Finally, the art style of post apocalyptic Japanese scrap metal punk has always been and still is great and very unique.
It so far crashed only once in 5 hours.

Unfortunately, I have too many problems with Kenshi in its current state to recommend it. The first and biggest issue is that there is nothing to do in it. The promised feature to join the military/police/bandits to get starting equipment and learn some basic skills is still not implemented. You have only one way to get better, which is fighting bandits.
Which leads to the next problem: When you start out, you cannot do anything. Everyone, even the starving bandits and beggars living in the cities are stronger, faster and better at fighting than you are.
So you can only live off of the breadcrumps of looting defeated bandits and watch your character whack away at a training dummy for hours of real time, because of how slow skill gain is. Trying to fight will just lead to having to wait half an hour in real time for the character to come out of his recovery coma and then limp back to a town. And that's without being robbed as well.

Graphically, even with the updates, it's still not too impressive but nice to look at. The GUI, unfortunately, makes some baffling choices that lead to text being indescipherable. Some is dark brown on rust background, other times it's teal on white. Really basic graphic design principles have been ignored when updating the interface, but some of those issues had been present all the way back in 2011.
The music is repetative and doesn't really stand out.
The newly added race is not available to the player.
Trying to sell to merchants is a hassle, because if you misclick and pick up an item from their shop, you pay for it. Even if you cannot afford it. Which can lead to having negative amounts of money. And this happens constantly because items are bigger than their icons indicate.
Again, the skill gain is so slow I can watch a video on youtube of someone else playing Kenshi while my character trains his melee skill or strength attribute. With no noticeable difference afterwards.
There are still no voiced dialogues, no sound to indicate combat started, no real oomph to weapons connecting, it just feels hollow and boring. I was attacked and knocked out without even noticing because combat is just so unremarkable. It doesn't even slow down time or notify you in any way except a muted red flash of the character portrait.
All attacks use the same overhead swing animation.

I want to reccomend this game, I want this to be what it promised, but it remained basically unchanged from 2012 to 2015, only it is now on steam instead of Desura. It is, I am sad to say, utterly boring.

I would gladly recommend this game. It has a few bugs and such. But they're working on it. If the game gets updated to what they want it to be. I would give this game a fat 8,3 It's still in Early Alpha though. However. This game is really rough and you need to put a good time in it to become a fine combatmaster.
