What the developers have to say:

Kenshi is currently in alpha state. The game is still in development and is missing many features. There are currently unfinished gameplay features, and the stability will fluctuate as new features are added. Expect crashes and bugs at this stage.
But remember the game receives regular ongoing updates and improvements, by purchasing at this early stage you get the game for a reduced price and can watch it gradually grow and improve, provide your feedback to the developer, and above all you are helping to fund the development for a small independent developer. Remember: the price will gradually increase over time as development progresses, so the sooner you purchase, the lower the price.”

About This Game

A free-roaming squad based RPG. Focusing on open-ended sandbox gameplay features rather than a linear story. Be a trader, a thief, a rebel, a mercenary, a business owner, a doctor, a bandit... the list goes on. Research new equipment and craft new gear. Purchase and upgrade your own buildings to use as safe fortified havens when things go bad, or use them to start up a business. Aid or oppose the various factions in the world while striving for the strength and wealth necessary to simply survive in the harsh desert. Train your men up from puny victims to master warriors. Carry your wounded squad mates to safety and get them all home alive.

Features

Freeform gameplay in a seamless game world stretching over 400 square kilometers. The game will never seek to limit you or restrict your personal play style.
Custom design as many characters as you want and build up a whole squad to fight for you.
Original take on the RTS-RPG hybrid genre. No "hero" characters with artificially stronger stats than everybody else- Every character and NPC you meet is potentially an equal, and has a name, a life.
Build a base where you can research new technologies, upgrade your defences and craft new gear.
You are not the chosen one. You're not great and powerful. You don't have more 'hitpoints' than everyone else. You are not the center of the universe, and you are not special. Unless you work for it.
Variation and possibilities of gameplay. Be good, be evil, be a business man, be a thief, live in a town, live in the desert, join the army, fight the army, travel alone, travel in hordes, build a fortress, raze a city.
Purchase and upgrade your own buildings to use as safe fortified havens when things go bad, or use them to start up a business.
Carry your wounded squad mates to safety and get them all home alive.
Dynamic, ever changing world. Support or hinder whoever you wish, or keep to yourself, the world won't stop moving. This is not just a "game", you are living and surviving in a simulated world.
Absolutely no Level-scaling. The world does not level up along with you, and the shops don't change their inventory to only items matching your level. At the start of the game almost everyone will be stronger than you, and survival will always be a struggle.
Realistic medical system that affects gameplay. A character with a wounded leg will limp or crawl and slow the party down, wounded arms means you must use your sword one-handed or not at all. Lose an eye and it will affect your field of vision. Blood loss means you can pass out, and the blood will attract predators. Exhaustion affects performance and is increased by equipment weight, weather, blood loss and thirst. Severed limbs will need expensive robotic replacements.
Intelligent AI that allows for characters to reason and work towards long-term goals and desires. Squads work together and carry their wounded to safety. Characters can be setup to take care of micromanagement for you.
Aid or oppose the various factions in the world while striving for the strength and wealth necessary to simply survive in the harsh desert.
Independently developed with no design influences, or alterations dictated by men in gray suits who have never played a game before in their lives.
Original game world. There are no fantasy-knock-off cliches. No magic.
Realistic physics simulation. PhysX Technology provided under license from NVIDIA Corporation. © 2002-2011 NVIDIA Corporation. All rights reserved.

So, this is probably going to be one of my favourite games of all time.

Despite the game being not having half the features that are planned for it, I'm hooked, because what it does contain is fantastic, and the potential of it excites me beyond belief.

Quality:
As it is currently, there are some minor annoyances bug/glitch wise (I.e wall/gate placement in base building, items dissapearing when dropped, and people being launched into the sky when put down) but with a pinch of salt and frequent quick-saving, it's nothing that will spoil your experience and the game is very playable as it is.

Value: (I paid £12.99)
For your money, you get to support the development of a game that will hopefully set the standard for future RPG's, as well as many, many, hours of what is currently very enjoyable Alpha gameplay. And if you're like me, and are really excited about where this game is going, you get to feverishly await the addition of future content!
I've clocked just over 60 hours on this playthrough and feel like I've more-or-less plumbed the depths of it by exploring most of the map, filling up my sqaud with people, doing 99% of the research and getting my main guys to be pretty good at what they do. However I could probably wring another 10-15 hours out of this playthrough easily, and the game has the potential to be infinitely replayable. I'd happily start over right now.

Brief Overview:
Until you can build your first outpost, you'll spend most of your time roaming around a vast and empty desert. I s**t you not. But trust me, you'll love it, because it's so atmospheric. Also, you will be very, very, very, cautious, hopping between the safety of city walls until you can toughen your guy(s) up. or you WILL get destroyed by ne'er-do-wells in the desert.

The thing I love most about Kenshi, is that it doesn't need quests or missions (although these may be implemented later), because it's an epic story that tells itself, and you make it up as you go along and become immersed in the story that you create.

Conclusion:
If you love RPG's, katanas, epic journeys, and immersive, open-ended, gameplay, then Kenshi is a no-brainer. The vast amount of potential this game has is a bonus. I wish all Early Access titles were this promising.

When I first saw this game, thought it was gonna be a M&B: Warband clone, only in a Asian setting, and that sounded great. But what this game is, is so much more, or at least potentially.

You create a character in a post apocalyptic feudal Japan-ish world, and from there your on your own. You can be a merchant, thief, shop owner, start your own town/outpost, craft your own weapons and armor, build different kind of functional buildings, research technology to build/craft even better stuff. You can train in fighting, stealth, repairing etc. by doing what ever you want to train in. Recruit squad members as bodyguards or as part of your personal mercenary group/army and control and train each person individually.

At first the game had sub-par GFX (It still not great, but aesthetically pleasing) and no sound, but bear in mind it was still in pre-alpha (currently in alpha), the graphics have improved since, and there is sound now. On top of that new major features keep being added every few months.

I bought the game when it was still $10, and it feels like an investment. I play it for a couple of months, when I come back after, say six months, more features are in and feels more polished every time. A few new major features (64bit engine, dialogue, overhauled pathfinding, animals/beasts and a new larger map with biomes) are planned for the near future. They already mentioned the beta in their latest progress update, price will probably go up again. In its current state (28/09/2014) the game is already very enjoyable, so buy it now while it's still in it's alpha pricing $20.

PS
I only started to play the game on Steam recently, my actual playtime should be more than 100 hours, maybe way more, I don't keep track realy :)

i love this game, it combines the best aspects of an RTS base building game and an RPG, but sadly since its in alpha its sooooo buggy, like play 2 hours and crash buggy. But nevertheless its a very good game that i reccomend if not buy it now wait till theyre atleast in beta stage.

This game has serious potential.. I've been playing it for 2 or 3 years now, and it's just gotten better.. great soundtrack and sounds have been introduced(for the most part), excellent armor and clothing additions..
The creator seems genuinely passionate about his game, and has hired more devs to further the game in depth and atmosphere.. I think this could be the real deal as far as greenlight goes.. (unlike SOME games)
I can't wait for the new map, as well as new animals, combat/sneak mechanics, etc.

I think this will be a good one, and worth watching out for if you aren't keen on unfinished games.. : )-~

Kenshi is a RPG-RTS featuring a slow progression and massive learning curve. It's core features, being RTS battles and Dwarf Fortress-like base building, are made more complex with every patch. Though, it does lack somethings, for instance: The beginning starts you out fairly weak, even the beginnings geared towards making you more combat ready only leave you with a powerful weapon against an army of more experienced bandits.

The difficulty fluctuated heavily a few hours in though. Even after amassing an army, you still aren't strong enough to take on a single bandit party. However, when you reach a point, and you've leeched a few kills off of guards with your squad of cowards, you're able to leave the game running with no fear of attack -- or agency. I'd automated an entire camp. Random events and the like, a feature of base-building games that it emulates, would and have been a boon.

This game could easily be the greatest game I ever play -- the potential is there. I need that 3D dwarf fortress.

This really has a lot of potential! I love the openness of it and the lack of any real user friendly guide. This kind of forces you to decide what you want to learn to do. I wouldn't recommend this to the casual gamer as the learning curve is kind of steep but if you enjoy open world sandbox games with RPG elements then this game might be for you.

Fun rts/open world sandbox/rpg/squad management/base building game. The developer continues to update the game although progress is a bit slow, slow but steady. The game has already been well worth the money I have spent and it continues to get better with each patch that is released.

A game you can play your way, from wandering the world doing good or evil to making a village and expanding it to a town or a fort. Set up trade with other CPU towns and defend your self from the raiders and bandits that roam the land.

This game is not finnished but its more playable than most other EA games and has a somewhat realistic feel, combat will result in damage to body parts, bleeding, broken limbs, coma's and even death, but fear not your villagers can not only heal each other buy carry them to bed to heal faster.

well worth the asking price, rarely crashes but the combat can be a lil difficult early game due to poorly trained warriors.

As of the writing of this review, I have about 49 hours in the game, and it's not finished. Forty-nine hours and it's not finished! They started with the sandbox (which is where they could have stopped as far as I'm concerned) and then started adding stuff! Grow a farm, mine for ore, learn how to make stuff, wander around and kill bandits, do whatever you want! Lo-Fi games is very good about updating fans, and they listen to comments. So check it out! Get in on the ground floor! Enjoy!

I CAME WHEN I PLAYED THIS GAME.

THIS IS EVERYTHING I'VE WISHED FOR AS A KID.

KIMOCHI KIMOCHI KIMOCHI

100 OUT OF 10

THAT'S LIKE 100% PERCENT BUT BETTER

BUY THIS GAME.

On a serious note this game is heavily under development but yet very promising even in early alpha stages. I can't imagine what it'll be like once it's finished. AI is persistant in this world making it a living breathing world, each with thier own goals. Best thing about all of this is that the game is only 10% complete in features. More will be arriving soon such as graphics revamp, music, even smarter AI, choice making, wildlife (lots of it), blood, seige equiptment, defensive buildings, biomes, points of intrest, etc.

I REALLY DO NOT GET WHY THERE ARE TWO THUMBS DOWN IN THE FRONT PAGE OF KENSHI'S REVIEW SECTION. THEY BOTH HAVE POOR TASTE IN GAMING.

Kenshi, A squad based game (I don't even know what that exactly means). Very in depth, I think.

IMO It's bad and i feel bad for buying it.
It's not an easy game. You start of as a ♥♥♥♥♥ lord no matter what path you choose to take. For me, I wanted to be an OP sword swinger but no. YOU ARE A SCRUBLORD. They say this game is really in depth but I'm not really seeing it. Yes it is a grind but it isn't indepth. Walking around, training with a dummy, luring bandits to the city and tbh the camera controls don't suit me. Maybe I'm just being mad.

TLDR- It's early access, Just wait it out.

This game is showing promise of being a really great game. I have owned it for almost a a year now and well it has not let me down. Even is its current unfinished and highly unpolshied state I find my self always coming back after each update. The developers have also shown great dedication by keeping us posted via there website, facebook, and on steam. Any fan of this game style I would highly recommend to I know I have gotten it for a few friends as a gift.

My only dislike of this game.....its not finished but as you can tell so far it seem like it will be well worth the wait.

Its honestly going to be a great game once the bugs are worked out. The walls don't keep anyone out because the bad guys just ghost in or end up on top of the wall some how and fall in and kill everyone.

My First Two Days in Kenshi:

Whelp, this sucks. I'm in the middle of nowhere with a broken arm, a stick and no clothes. I don't remember much except that my name's Numura, I'm in a bad predicament and that predicament is due to some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ named Teuchi. Well, what's a girl to do in this situation?

I really, really want to find some sort of civiliation, hell even a simple shelter, but there's nothing for miles...

Oh are those people off in the distance? Maybe they can he- oh. Oh ♥♥♥♥. They don't look friendly. Time to run around blindly like a headless chicken trying to avoid three groups of bandits.

Oh hell, one of them spotted me! Run!

Hey, who're those guys fighting down there? Whatever, maybe I can lose my persuers in the chaos of the fight.

...aaand the bandits are all dead. Let me just look through their stuff.... oh hey, a shirt! And pants! And *shoes*! Yes!

Wait, those other guys aren't attacking me? Huh, Holy Nation, hm? Seem like nice people. I'll follow you guys around for now.

Wow, you guys mean business, just up and murdering any bandit you find! Can we be friends? Oh, you only care about bounties? Well fine, Mr. Stick Up Your ♥♥♥, I didn't want to talk and hang out and tell jokes anyways! Jerk.

Oh hey, there's another group of people over there. And they're not bandits! Awesome. Hey, Holy warriors dudes, it's been fun but I really want to find a bed and maybe a shop, and these guys are trader so... bye!

Aaaaaand trading post ahoy! Time for sleeping and buying and- whatddya mean I don't have enough money for that armored hat?! Damned traders...
