Friday Update - May 15th

Thanks Pavle!

At the end of the month, Godus programmer Pavle has decided to move on to other things. Pavle has been known around the studio for his messy desk, passionate nature and love of Jaegerbombs.

Pavle has also been involved with our Kickstarter 'Making of' Documentary which is getting the finishing touches ironed out right now. Keep an eye out for more Documentary news in the coming weeks.

We wish him all the best with all his future endeavours.

"22cans was my first job, ever."

"I got an internship here after one year of university at the Instituto Superior Técnico in sunny Portugal because of an off-the-cuff e-mail I sent Peter Molyneux. "So.. My name is Ryan and I'm currently interning at 22cans as part of my course at Goldsmiths University. Before that, I studied Computer Science and previously worked for a design company as a creative technologist."

"I wanted to work for 22cans because I really enjoyed curiosity and Godus and I thought that it'd be great to be a part of the talented team at 22cans."

Ryan is currently working on our Combat Warbands - Creating a navigation system that allows the warband to navigate to their paths whilst staying in formation to give a more realistic feel to them. Neat!

Friday Update - April 24th

What's been happening this week?

This week the team have working hard at polishing off a Combat build for an internal preview that, if successful, will be pushed to our Opt-In testing branch early next week! Most of the initial time consuming groundwork has been implemented and the team are now focusing on challenging artificial intelligence, tricky GUI elements and Annah's awesome art assets.

As you may have heard, Jack Attridge - one of the original Godus co-designers left the 22cans team this week. He's off to start his own gaming venture after years of mentoring from Peter Molyneux and the rest of the team. Before Jack left, he was in charge of finishing off the 22cans Documentary mentioned in our Kickstarter.

Godus Opt-In Developer Builds

With all this talk of Godus Combat and Opt-In builds, we thought it might be time to remind the community about how to access our often buggy but feature packed Developer Builds! Please remember that these builds are meant for testing and might include all kinds of bugs that haven't been swatted by Martin yet!

Now is the perfect opportunity to dive in to Opt-In!

How to Opt In to Developer Builds

If you'd like to participate in our regular developer builds, just follow the easy instructions below.
  • Go to your Steam Library
  • Right click on GODUS and select "Properties"
  • Click on the "Betas" tab
  • Enter your beta access code, which is ‘22canstester'
  • Click "Check Code"
  • Click on the dropdown menu and make sure “releasetest” is selected
  • Hit "Close" and you're all set

At this point it's probably a good time to mention that players should create a back up of their Godus save games. In the event of a nasty bug, they'll be able to revert back with minimal problems!

Just follow the steps below:
  • Right click on Godus in your steam library
  • Select "Properties"
  • Go across to the "LOCAL FILES" tab
  • Select "Browse Local Files
  • Find the folder starting with "prf1" and make a copy somewhere save
  • Then to reload your old save if something goes wrong simply copy the contents from the OLD prf older into the NEW folder prf folder and when you next load the game it should be back to your old world.

Recent Bug Fixes

Martin is constantly inundated from the community with bugs found within Godus. Here's a recent list of ones Martin has squashed.
  • The game crashes after relaunching the game while on any tutorial
  • The game keeps on crashing when the user builds the first abode then relaunches the game
  • User is unable to proceed to 'Weyworld' after unlocking and sailing the 'Ark' on 'Homeworld'
  • The game randomly hitches while playing through the game
  • The land under some Settlements reverts to its initial land formation after the user plays again on Weyworld
  • Upgrading the 'Farming Settlement' will change the 'Settlement Size' value for 'Mining Settlement' and 'Builder Settlement' info modal on the 'Timiline' UI
  • The description of the Shrine of Stamina ( Stronger Followers ) on the Timeline UI is incorrect
  • Astari festival started after conquering Astari Village
  • Various Translation Errors
  • The value / text displayed on the Super Boost card description is incorrect

Cross-platform development

Our development proceeds through sprints that may have differing platform focuses. As such, much of the gameplay available to you in v2.2 is the result of a recent mobile-focused sprint and we intend to progress to a PC-focused sprint within the coming months. Please take this into consideration, as while adjustments will continue to be made to the PC platform to account for the game's differing payment model (buy-to-play on PC & free-to-play on mobile), some areas of balance and design may retain certain elements of the mobile version for the time being.

My long, horrible experience with this game:

I bought this game shortly after the early access was available and I have to admit I quite liked it. There was a fair bit to do, controls seemed easy enough and it was quite fun with very little restriction in exploring the World even though. You had to ctrl+alt+del to quit the game but I expected some big bugs.

Then everything went silent, for months there were no updates and no communication. Nothing was announced until the update was around the corner. A complete over-haul of the game was done which completely changed the game, some new things were added which restricted the original explore at your leisure feeling of the previous version. It also changed from feeling like a PC game to feeling more like an Android app that I'm able to play on my computer. You still had to ctrl+alt+del to exit the game which was a tad annoying.

Some minor and additions changes were made. A happiness meter which was added to this re-vamp turned out to be game breakingly bugged. The ways to make them happy were expensive and very inefficient, while in the game your citizens would become depressed within seconds of anything happening. A warring faction that was introduced would just wreck your village with you being pretty much unable to fend off as it happens pretty early on and frequently. You still had to ctrl+alt+del to quit the game which was getting tedious.

Needless to say a patch was quickly developed and removed some of the key features. Nothing was really added to the game until the next major update, some tweaks and changes here and there. None of these updates kept you from still having to ctrl+alt+del to exit the game though.

Then the big downfall happened with the next major update. Had they spent all these months adding lots of new content to the game and fixing bugs? No! Well, technically no. The time spent in those months was in bringing the unfished, buggy pile of crap into the mobile phone market. It's free, but leans heavily on the pay to win aspect. What had they done to the PC version? They turned it into the style of the mobile app and kept the pay to win aspects with it, instead of paying money for these aspects you had to pay with resources and such. You still had to fecking ctrl+alt+del to quit the game.

I had hope for many months, after 18-24 months I was still clinging on to some sense of hope that something would emerge positively from all this waiting. All that's happened in two years is a revamp with no real game progress, the game developed and re-coded into a mobile phone version, then the game seemingly being ported from the mobile app with a few tweaks. I quit the game for a long time until about a month ago. I thought I'd see what's new and what's been added since I spent a few months away. Well turns out nothing was really new, the progress I made was less than when I played the 1.0.3 version. After a few days of getting to a point where progress was just halted, I was getting a handful of stickers a day and it turned out I could use the "pay to win" aspect to get more I just uninstalled the game and vowed never to return. Oh yes, I had to ctrl+alt+delete to quit the game before uninstalling it.

I rarely write reviews on Steam but this game deserves a firm "No". Even for the official release the game was met with progression timers and contained a very minimal amount of the promised features. I played this game for less than an hour and it was not worth the time. Overpromised and underdelivered, this is a poor game not worth anyone's money.

It used to be a little fun, but it never quite did it for me. The controls are wonky and it feels like I'm playing a bad board game. It's a neat idea, just exectued very poorly. Evidently a mobile game port as others have said. DON'T DO IT! DON'T BUY IT! You know what you should go buy instead for 20 dollars? Go buy that one movie you really liked that you never got around to buying. Take your boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife/mom/dad out for a cheap dinner. Go see a movie with a friend and get popcorn. Go buy 5 king sized candy bars. Those are all WAY better experiences than this. I feel like the other negative reviews state very well what's wrong with this game. I don't want to type it. There's a lot.

Immensely disappointing. I am glad I supported this through early access, as the concept was very appealing. But the game will never be completed. I am sure you can read the press and watch the interviews, please do and just remember them if you see 22cans or PM pop up as a developer again.

Yeah, this is my first review, so it'll probably be awful, but I'm going to be brutally honest here: This waste of cash was BORING.

What do I mean? Well...there is so much micromanaging, but that's only percentage-wise. The gameplay is EXTREMELY slow, enough to put someone to sleep. A game about being a sky-god SHOULD NOT BE BORING. I spent the entire first session, all 91 minutes or whatever, waiting for it to kick up its intensity even slightly.

Nothing. Black and White was better than this - B&W shoots Godus with a sniper rifle, in one eye and out the other, from a distance of about a kilometer, then does awful things to its corpse.

To make it worse, the click-and-drag interface. Oh. Dear. GOD the interface. A lot of people seem to be frustrated by this point, so read those reviews for more details.

I would more easily recommend Dwarf Fortress - yes, THAT Dwarf Fortress - to a casual gamer, than I would this to anyone. Heck, I enjoy DF, and I'm pretty casual.

That this game is $20 USD isn't just salt in the wound. It's more like someone put a rocksalt shot in a shotgun, put the barrel's opening directly on my right hand, and pulled the trigger. I literally would not recommend this game for 10% of its asking price.

You want a better game? Go buy Dragon: the Game. It's $2 cheaper than this, and while yes, it's still in development and pretty buggy, that means the developers want your input as much as your cash. Give it to them, and don't give this developer a dime.

You want another better game? How about The Long Dark. Same price, but much better developed, with survival in the wilds of frozen Canada and wolves trying to tear you to pieces. It's tough, but at least it's a way better buy.

You want another one? What am I, a computer? Go browse on your own. You'll probably find more hits on Steam than this thing's cost in pennies.

paying for a game.. that cannot even start again... if you want to start over you have the delete the whole game off.. then install it again.. really!!!! I deleted and it didnt.. how can you charge for a game that doesn't even have a bloody start over button!!!! Or new game!!! BAd vibe on steam for allowing this to happen... I will not buy another game from steam.

When I first got this game, its was wonderful. I loved it, there wasnt very many fetures in it yet, and getting gems was a pain in the ♥♥♥, and so was digging out that damn head. IT had promise, but now, years later, I cant even bring my self to reinstall the game any more. ITs not turning out to what it should of been. It is not the god sim I hoped for. Originally it was a joke and was called sculpting with finger simulator, but I liked it, now, its just a pain in the fat ♥♥♥ of a white chick sitting on a midget. It is no longer with the money.

There is all kinds of controversy surrounding this game as far as developement strategy is concerned. There are some big names behind this title, which is why I picked it up. As far as I know they were taking in some direction to monetize it more.

Regardless, its really not that fun as is. It feels like a tablet game with lots of spam clicking and such.

I could see someone in some corporate board meeting saying 'Hey, Minecraft was a huge hit with those voxels, so how about instead of voxels, we use layers!

I will just tell you my verdict up front in case you don't want to read why this is my verdict.


If this game thinks that you play as a God it is truly wrong. Even the trailers voice acting is bad. also if you can see the houses you have to build plots, and at a certain point you start running out of sculpting power and you have to wait in order to make more trees or rocks. This game was truly a waste of my money and my hope is that you do not waste your money on this early access game and instead go and buy, I don't know, any other early access game that is actually making progress. This game is meant to be a mobile game and it isn't even worth the price it would be if it was a mobile game. I wouldn't pay a dollar to get this game and I wouldn't get it for free because there would be a paywall. The paywall comes in ... I don't know 2-3 hours in the game and even then you were waiting for faith. The game starts you off with enough trees and rocks but it is an illusion to make you think that the game will be that easy from there on out. This game could have been so much better by removing the ENTIRE FAITH MECHANIC. The faith mechanic makes you have to wait and wait and wait until you have enough to make small increments of an amount of sculpting the smallest little path so that you can hurry up and get your followers through. The only good part to faith is that it is a reason to build homes. So let me tell you how I would have made this game if not my own game:
1. In the beginning you start off on a randomly generated but fair landscape.
2. You can sculpt the landscape however you want without being limited to breaking down trees and rocks (which makes no sense that you would want to destroy trees and rocks as a "GOD" because, lets be honest, if you were truly to play as a god you wouldn't need to break trees or rocks or wait for a long time to be able to sculpt.)
3. When villager is created (by you) you can choose what actions you want it to do.
4. When he builds a house (in the location you want him to not where the game wants you to) he will live in it.
5. Create other villager and have them make babies in the house (or not).
6. Create as many villagers as you would like but only some of them with housing will be happy, the others will not be.
7. Villager becomes mayor and you can now move on to the farming era.
8. After enough houses are made and enough population is there you can move on to the next era, to the next era, etc.
9. Whatever you do in between these steps is your choice but these are just the essentials or how to progress from eras.
10. I would update this game seeing if the reviews were bad or if I see any bugs reported.
11. Wouldn't lie (and didn't lie) about any of the steps or hide secret things in between the steps that you absolutely HAVE to do.

Garbage cookie-clicker. Any attempt to draw likeness to populus is a complete and utter delusional joke. This game is not even worth your time reading the remainder of this review, stop reading now and move on with your life.

Avoid this game like the plague.
