Was very unimpressed with this game. The game is rogue-like, which is already kind of meh, but it does have checkpoints, and tons of stuff to unlock and reuse. The problem is the unlocks are based on a lot of doing challenges and luck when things will drop. The other problem is nothing is explained. I got tons of green, red, blue, squares with different initials and none of them were explained so I never new what things I had or how they impacted things. Or you'll grab an item that says "ricochet" and not know exactly what that means. The biggest problem is the poor platforming and mediocre combat. When you jump, or even double jump, you only get like 3 feet off the ground. You can super jump, but you have to stand stick holding down a button for a few seconds and its kind of clunky. Also when you fall or fall from a jump you drop like you had lead weights attached to you. this means navigating traps is annoying because you'll fall back down before you know it. It also means you'll fall down like 3 stories before you know it. Which leads to the other problem. The game has a time limit for no reason, and forces you to move quickly. The problem is that most of the time you get hurt, it isn't your fault, and you'll never be able to see it coming. Since when moving down you suddenly fall like a rock suddenly you'll have fallen through 5 floors right onto a guy. Or in all the chaos of blood items, enemies, etc, its a very busy screen and hard to see things. Many times I would attack something and I would still get hurt somehow. The hitboxes are also wonky sometimes. Its not sound platforming, just kind of speed rushing mashing attack. Also the directional keys are attack buttons for some reason, forcing you to destroy things when you just want to move. There isn't much to the game. After like 4 tries I'd gotten to the final boss of the tower, and I didn't have much reason to replay. Especially bc the "random gen" is just different colored blocks but the same enemies and everything else. Then the final boss is stupidly right after you fight another boss, and if you die on him, you have to do it all over again. Also its annoying how many times things can only be hurt by projectiles but you get a set amount, and you may not have the right one. There is another tower but you have to collect a bunch of stuff on one run without dying, so its mostly luck and repetition anyways.

As a platform fan whos played dozens of titles, the platforming, combat, and game design were not up to par. But has a few nice features in the limited amount of content.

This game just has no charm. There's only one way to describe it, and others before me have done it: slippery. This kind of fast-paced platformer might appeal to some people, but I just find it terrible. You never feel in control, you just mindlessly cut all ennemies, and you go from a floor to the other hoping for something new. The bosses are the only glimpse of hope, but they're not even THAT exciting, and they only last so long.

I even forget the levels are procedurally generated, because they all look the same (or at least, you have so little time to appreciate them that they might as well just all be the same).

When we think rogue-like, or roguelite, or roguelike-like (or whatever we call them now), we think endless hours of playing runs after runs. With SHoDN, I'm bored long before I finish my first run. I have to force myself to wait until I have no more lives to close the game.

I usually enjoy rogue-likes and platformers a lot. I love games where there's so much going on on the screen that you can hardly tell what you're doing, like Bayonetta or Guitar Hero on expert difficulty. I love games with some sort of time trial, and thought it was a clever mechanic to ask players to get to the next "time power-up" before they run out of time, which reminded me of arcade games, especially racing games. Sadly, even though I had all it takes on paper to enjoy this game, it has nothing compelling once you play it.

++ Highly responsive gameplay, perfect for speed-running.
+ Frantic action. Good variety of enemies and bosses.
+ Randomly generated levels guarantee a fresh experience for each consecutive run.
+ Great variety of unlockable items, upgrades, weapons and other goodies.
+ Perfect balance between tension build up and carnage.
+ 3 difficulty modes, each with their own specific treats and handicaps.

- No multiplayer support.

This game is an absolute must have. If you have skipped previous sales, by all means add this one to your wishlist so you can get it for a cheap price once it gets a big discount (or gets bundled) in the future.

Super House of Dead Ninjas is an Arcade title that puts your reflexes to the test. You have to drop all the way to the bottom of an evil tower filled with deadly traps, mobs and boss fights. Each tower you run through is randomly generated. There are new weapons and items that can be unlocked by meeting certain requirements. A timer keeps the tension present all the time; if you let it drop to 0, you'll lose a live, however there are items that will let you either freeze or reset the counter.

I have played this game for over 20 hours and I still haven't gotten tired of it. It is so good! If only it allowed multiplayer runs or challenges. Oh well, maybe for the sequel.

Get this hidden gem. You will definitely enjoy it.

Super House of Dead Ninjas is another very solid entry into the recent list of randomly generated action games on the pc market.

Throughout the game, you're constantly descending a randomly generated tower at breakneck speed. There's a timer, as well as score bonuses for chain killing enemies encouraging you to go as fast as possible and kill as many enemies as possible without slowing down. It's very offense oriented, with not much dodging and a very strong emphasis on just blazing through everything without making any mistakes (a bit of a minus for me personally, since I prefer complex dodging, but it's definitely an interesting play style).

There are not many flaws that I can think of, as it overall feels well thought out. My biggest complaint is that the various traps and levels the rng gives you often feel a bit same-y, and lack strategic variety. Things do get harder as you progress, but once you've seen one set of hazards, you've pretty much seen them all, and that's all you really do throughout the course of the game. The ultra fast move speed also feels a bit unwieldy during some of the boss fights as well, though that could just be me.

It's a good game for sure, just not one of my favorites (play style is interesting but not really my style, and the slight lack of variety hurts it a bit too in my opinion). If you're on the fence, I'd recommend watching a gameplay video, because it plays exactly the way it looks. If it looks like something that'll scratch your speed running arcade ninja itch, than pick it up because you'll probably enjoy it a lot.

Wow is this addicting. I should not have waited so long to pick this up. Watching videos doesn't really do this game justice. The thing is, the game makes you feel sooo bad*ss. Alot of people compare it to Ninja Gaiden, which is a good comparison. It is fast and furious. There are lots of awesome meta-game unlockables which is where the 'meat' of the game is. Achievements are all appropriate and really give alot of life to this game. It also lends itself really well to speedrunning.

Keep in mind that I would not recommend playing this without a controller. I played with the keyboard for a bit, which was fine, but ultimately the experience is much better with a controller.

If you like roguelites, this is a no brainer. I even recommend the cheap DLC.

My favorite platformer at the moment. Fast paced ninja action with blast processing. Lots of variety in weapons, enemies and a randomly generated tower every time.

This Adult Swim gem is my favorite retro platformer!

The controls are super responsive.
Brilliant, fast paced gameplay
Loads of melee weapons, projectiles, bombs and suits to unlock.
The unlocks and achievements actually test your in game skill.
Even if you fail, you will never get frustrated or bored playing this game.

If you absolutely love modern or retro platformers, YOU NEED TO BUY IT!
