Reviews

“For all its charm, Thomas is more than just the super-minimalist-yet-incredibly-engaging tales of a few plucky AIs. It's the story of games. Of how they get made and played, of the joys and frustrations they bring and of the thousands of tiny iterative processes that go into evolving single titles and the entire medium into their best forms.”
Evan Narcisse, Kotaku

“It proves that you don't need tens of millions of dollars and hundreds of staff to make a game story worth telling, just a good hook, an engaging vision, and a whole lot of heart.”
9/10 – Josh Tolentino, Destructoid

“The understated aesthetic design and unusual co-op puzzles will absorb you for the game’s duration – the wit and personality of the writing, though, will stay with you for much longer.”
8/10 – Keza MacDonald, IGN

About This Game

Thomas Was Alone, and then, Well, he Wasn't.

Thomas Was Alone is an indie minimalist 2D platformer about friendship and jumping and floating and anti-gravity. Guide a group of rectangles through a series of obstacles, using their different skills together to get to the end of each environment.
Listen to awesome music by David Housden. Jump over rectangles meticulously placed by Mike Bithell. Listen to voiceover read wistfully and a bit amusingly by Danny Wallace.

Thomas Was Alone tells the story of the world's first sentient AIs, and how they worked together to, well, not escape: Escape is a strong word. 'Emerge' might be better. 'Emerge' has an air of importance about it, while keeping the myriad plot twists and superhero origin stories you'll discover under wraps. We didn't even mention the bouncing. That'd be overkill.

Key Features

  • Beat 100 levels, and uncover the story of the AIs.
  • Utilize the unique skills of 10+ characters.
  • Immerse yourself in David Housden's critically acclaimed procedural score.
  • Chuckle along to Danny Wallace's narration.

a great minimalist platformer with many things to love.
the story ties in with the level design, while also providing a challenging puzzle.
there is some really good narration by danny wallace, which compels me to see what happens to the lovable shapes i play as in the game.

Honestly couldn't believe that this game would be fun until I tried it.
You would have to like puzzle games though.

One of my favorite games ever. Somehow it manages to evoke more charm and character than most other tripple A titles out there. A game about different colored blocks....
Also the soundtrack is phenomenally atmospheric, it'll make you feel feels.

A simple, fun, and charming little game. The end felt a bit tedious, but overall I liked it.

Thomas Was Alone is an uplifting, engrossing story with expert narration and a beautiful soundtrack wrapped around a mechanically excellent puzzle platformer. I am not a particularly big platformer fan (nor am I very good at them) and I was still driven to complete all 11 chapters and 110 levels, despite frequent frustration at my own limitations.

I think the thing I liked the most about Thomas is that whenever I finally edged my way past a challenge, I felt like it was because I had improved as a player, not because I'd just gotten lucky. That might be the best compliment I can give a platformer.

I literally have no idea how a game about quadrilaterals has better characters and a better story than most summer blockbusters. This game is really really really good.

I did not find it astonishing; many have found it oh so emotional, but it takes more to move me. Also, the platforming is not particularly memorable. However, I have to concede the characters' different abilities give some interest to the game, the narration is not bad and the minimalistic approach really got me. So yeah, all in all, a good purchase.

Do you like rectangles? Do you REALLY like them? Like... a lot? Don't worry if you don't because after you play this game you will. Unless, you know, you're a heartless monster with no feelings.
You start with Thomas, a lonely rectangle and progressively you end up with a bunch of buddies. Every rectangle possesses a different skill that is useful for completing the level and you have to use their unique physiology and skills switching between ractangles in order to clear the levels.
The voiceover is great and, to me, it is what makes this game unique and fun. Each rectangle has their own very distinct character, worldview, wishes, resons to cooperate with the others etc. It really feels as though they are more than a bunch of differently coloured geometric shapes and I think that's what makes this game immersive. It is a simple puzzle game but it's more than that. You don't use tools, you use characters and you try to help them move through levels hoping they get rewarded at the end of the game. When you push the controls you put them where they want to be; you are helping them. You're not just going through game levels, you control their AI lives .
The graphics are pretty simple but you don't really need anything more. It's easy for the eyes and easy for the ears because the music is just a relaxing background thing that exists without distracting you from your important quest to lead the fellowship of the squares somewhere (even though you're not sure where and you don't really know what will happen in the end).
The design is good, the music is good and follows the story, the voiceover is great, the story is superb, the characters rather likeable and other than some weird voice track when some levels finish everything is fine. The learning curve was good as well and most puzzles were rather easy but with enough challenge to them to not be boring.
The second most importans thing about this game (after rectangles) is jumping. Short jumps, long jumps, each reactangle having different jumping skills and some being proud or ashamed according to how far they can jump. And I found the jumps more reliable here than at many other platformers. Then come the puzzles and the teamork. If there's a moral in this game it's that you sometimes need friends to help you and it's ok accepting their help and that a lonely rectangle is not a happy rectangle.
Overall it is a game really good at what it is. No enemies, no shooting, no frustration, just a 2d puzzle with some shapes with human personalities and emotions. I've been meaning to play this game for some time so I'm happy it didn't end up disappointing me.
10/10 would hang out with Thomas and his gang.

A beautifully simple game with surprisingly rich characters and story.

While not necessarily for hardcore gamers, this game hits just the right spot for casual gamers. Controls are extremely simple, the puzzles fairly straight forward, the game is not too long or short, and contains no levels that will cause you to bash your head against the wall in frustration.
The simple geometric art style is easy on the eyes and the music is quite relaxing (though if playing this in one run, it may become a bit repetitive). This makes Thomas Was Alone a great game to play to relieve stress or just kill some time.
The narrative is witty and superbly executed, just be careful to let him finish before moving onto the next level.

If the $10 price tag seems a little high for 4hrs of gameplay (which is how long it will take if you do not go for every achievement), buy it on sale.

My one complaint is some stuttering between levels.

Short but Sweet

Man this game. It's relatively old at this point, but it's pretty timeless. I liked it a lot. It's got an interesting (if bizzare) story, and the narration is what really makes it. The platforming is challenging, but can be frustrating at times, however it's very rewarding when you get to hear the next bit of dialogue. Very much recommended, especially to those who think story shouldn't be the main point of a game.

Simple yet beatiful visual design, pleasent sounds, music and voice, well-thought levels and gameplay, and an elementary storyline that is not important at all but still perfectly fits in, make this not just a game but more like a piece of art.

My only reproach is an overly easy difficulty, but in the end it's not a big deal.

10/10

This game is like a journey, you are helping Thomas, along with others, through relationships and things he isn\'t able to explain.
If you\'re searching for a minimalistic, yet very atmospheric game, you won\'t regret getting Thomas Was Alone.
