Really solid metroidvania with portalesque mechanics... might seem like a rip-off but its really done so well and transfered so naturally to 2D that its a game that deserves to be played by any platformer enthusiast that likes their action mixed in with a heavy dose of puzzle solving.

You will hear a lot that this is mix of puzzle platformer and Portal, with an indie taste. But the game is original, and fun. Very simple mechanics but yet good puzzles presented to the player not too difficult, some require more thought than others and its really nice when you figure out on your own how to do it. But fear not, if you get stuck you can obtain the solutions right in the game and you can move on to clear the next level/puzzle. Lacking a bit of better sound effects and music, but those are still adequate to the game.

Envolve mecânica bem simples, mas os quebra-cabeças são interessantes mas geralmente nada complexo, alguns necessitando de mais tempo e experimentação para dar certo e é bem legal quando você descobre por conta própria. Mas não tem problema se você empacar em alguma parte porque você pode obter a solução de dentro do jogo mesmo. Os efeitos sonoros e músicas tem pouca variabilidade mas do jeito que estão se encaixam bem com o jogo.

This game really does surprise you. It comes off as "portal, but in 2D, and minus the sense of humor." And well, it kind of is, but it does so much more. The puzzles get progressively harder and more complex as you get different guns, and the last sequence of puzzles before the end is kind of just completely brain-melting. There's a surprisingly high execution factor in some cases, as well. And this is only the normal difficulty. I've not played the game's "hard" mode but I doubt I'd be able to complete it if I did. The graphics are kind of ugly though, all things considered, but that's a minor knock against it.

Gateways is the game Quantum Conondrum should have been: A fun, clever game that takes Portal-thinking to the next level thanks to the new portal types. A must buy for any Portal fan.

Easily the best 2D puzzle platformer I've ever played.

Given the game-mechanics, it's impossible not to compare this game to (the puzzles in) Portal 2. The lack of a third-dimension makes the portal-only puzzles much easier than in Portal 2. However, Gateways also adds several game-mechanics not found in Portal 2, such as the ability to change gravity or travel backwards in time. The new mechanics are introduced continuously throughout the game, keeping the puzzles fresh and interesting. Additionally, they ensure the puzzles are challenging even to Portal-veterans.

My only complaint about the game is that it's so short (~4 hours of gameplay). However, when that's my only complaint about your puzzle-game, you're in very good shape, especially for only $5.

Awesome game! At first it's simply Portal in 2D, but then there are "gateways" of size change, time travel and gravity change; at the same time you can use a flashlight and a mirror to activate light sensors. Quite a brainf...

Have you ever played Portal? Did you like it? And have you ever wondered how would it look in 2D, with pixelarty cartoony graphics and with other portals like resizing ones? Wonder no more and try this logical platformer game. The puzzles aren't totally easy and will make you scratch your head from time to time. The rooms are vast and there's a lot to discover. I really like this game's take on Portal ideas and mechanics and I recommend it.

A really well designed puzzle game that takes the concept of the portal gun (from Portal games) one step further.

It's in a form of a 2D platformer rather than a 3D game, which has its charm too, as the developers have put plenty of effort in making the portals, or "gateways" as they're called here, have the same physical properties we know from Portal games, which includes being able to see the other side of the gateway before going in, extending your view as if the place behind the gateway was a continuation of the area. I find the way they did it ingenious, as I had already wondered before if it would be possible to make such an effect in a 2D game and make it look good. I'm glad to see somebody did it right!

But I mentioned this game goes one step further. Well, in addition to the basic Gateway Gun, you also get to use 3 different ones that create gateways that make you change size, travel through time and shift gravity. All these together give a lot of interesting possibilities creating a really smart, but fair puzzle game. I didn't find any of the puzzles really frustrating. They were sometimes tricky, but all could be solved with some logical planning after understanding how each Gateway Gun worked. The time travel one was the most confusing to me at first, but it was in fact all very logical after I got used to it.

If you enjoy this sort of puzzles, check it out. Check the Steam Workshop as well. The developer published their own custom level there called "Back To The Lab", which contains a nice new set of puzzles, adding even more content to the game. It's like a free DLC!

Easily dismissed as a 2D-Portal copycat (funfact: it sorta is, but bear with me), and though lacking in many aspects, it might still be sort of a fun game.

Yes, it has the same mechanics as Portal, and yes, it is 2D, but it is not only that. You have the space-wraping portal, but also the
- rotation portal which changes the direction of the gravity
- shrinking/growing portal
- time-wrapping portal

The combination these different portals give raise to a myriad of possibilities for endless headache. Whenever you face a new puzzle, however, you might still be unable to solve it: you might need to revisit that puzzle in the future. For this reason, the game gives you the choice of spending some "power orbs" in order to reveal if you can solve a specific puzzle or not.

Which then brings the cons of the game. The map is huge and let me tell you, not fun to navigate at all. Curisouly enough, the game is rather short: I have the feeling that if the puzzles would be presented linearly in their solveable sequence, this game would have been even shorter. Also I felt like there could be more puzzles combining the portals, and the ending felt "lazy". Also, this game screams for a little bit of a story in a comic/sarcastic tone, but there is *nothing*, be warned.

The puzzles are solid, enjoyable and not overly frustrating but also nothing ingenious. Achievements are fine, except for "That's the way to do it" which cannot be obtained in Linux. If you don't support the achievement in a supported platform, please, remove the achievement, that didn't even need to be said. Otherwise the game gave me no headache in Linux.

So as a puzzle game, this is a good (short) game. It could have been more, but that's all that it is. It might be enough.

So you know how to think with portals? Now try thinking with time portals.
I originally expected this would be just a 2d portal demake, but it quickly shows itself to be much, much more. Almost all the puzzle elements are unique to this game, and they're quite challenging and fun.

This game is absolutely worth playing if you like puzzle games and satisfying challenges.

Gateways is the story of a scientist trying to find his way around his own lab that has been commandeered by some alien life. At every step of the way he faces obstacles which he has to use his wits to overcome. Thankfully, you can find out if you are able to solve any given puzzle fairly easily so you know whether to go for it or give it up for the time being. With power ups such as those that allow you to jump higher, make yourself larger or smaller, and use copies of yourself to solve puzzles this game is jam packed with cool ideas. The game is challenging at times but brings a lot of satisfaction and is all around a lot of fun.

The one negative thing for me is that figuring out how to use the time power is hard to do, especially iinitially with little explanation of it. But if you can master it - and it does take time - it is wonderful.

Very nice puzzle game. The puzzles are challenging (sometimes so much that I'm really grateful to the developer for including the purchasable solutions), the controls work fine and the art stile is not bad. What I don't like about it is that it depends heavily on upgrades, a ton of the areas are locked at the beginning and can only be reached as you slowly get the various guns and upgrades that allow you to solve the puzzles that lead to those areas. I bought this game because I assumed it would have been a 2d version of portal, and at the beginning it was. But portal's low skill floor was the thing that made it such an awesome game: you had one simple tool with 2 modes and you had to master them. As you progressed through the game the levels became more and more difficult, but the tools you had stayed the same, which allowed it to be a game with huge depth with very little complexity.
Something that this game is sadly not. But it's still enjoyable, for a few hours. At 0.99€ it's a no brainer.

Very clever game. The difficulty curve of the puzzles keeps going up. I've never finished the game since the latter puzzles get *very* hard, but I would still definitely recommend it for the earlier ones.

One of the greatest things about bundles is that you regularly get good games you didn't expect. Occasionally, you get a game that's absolutely amazing and, of course, you absolutely don't expect it. Enter Gateways, a puzzle platformer, where you guide a professor in his lab with a surprisingly complex topology. Someone's been interfering with his equipment, Monkoids are rampaging everywhere, and his most powerful tools are missing. Let's help him gather his stuff and get out of the lab!

Gateways mixes the elements of many puzzle platformers - you can teleport via portals (of, well, Portal), you can manipulate time and your past selves (like PB Winterbottom), you can rotate gravity (like in many other games), and you can also change your size. All this combined together in a dual portal gun mechanic. Sounds like it would never work? Certainly. But defying all common sense, the creators of Gateways managed to create a mechanic that not only works but works wonderfully. With a bit of practice, that is. Growing from the portal mechanic, the entire control scheme and UI is very sleek, and the action is very well flowing, making it difficult to stop playing.

What about puzzles? First, it bears mentioning that the game plays in one huge, complex lab where further and further areas open as you solve puzzles. Some of these are quite easy (the difficulty curve is gentle up to a point), and later in the game some of them are really tough, and sometimes, though very rarely, a bit unfair. But I guess it's not a real puzzle game if you sometimes don't feel like bashing your controller into the screen :) However, the online help system is there to help you when you're stuck.

Presentation-wise, the game has excellent visual design paired with rather ugly, huge-pixel-style graphics. I'm not sure what's the reason behind this choice, but the game is absorbing enough to forgive this flaw. The music is also excellent.

Gateways is a really enjoyable puzzle platformer with more focus on the puzzles than the platforming. Recommended to everyone who likes the genre - it's tons of fun.

Gateways starts off like 2d Portal and then advances to more with all sorts of different Portal-style guns, but for other things like time.

The game starts off pretty fun.. but its difficulty curve. Ugh.
This summed it up:

It goes from basic and fun with just enough challenge to keep it exciting.. to ♥♥♥♥ing tedious and ridiculously hard.

Now, since I last played it I heard it was patched to have an easier difficulty mode.
I might give it a go sometime, and if I find it much better then I'll re-post this review.

Until then, I can say it was a really neat game ruined by an overly extreme difficult curve.
It had a lot going for it. The visuals were cute and the music fit well. The gimmick was awesome and playing a Portal-style game in a 2d sidescrolling environment was awesome.
In fact, I enjoyed the time playing this game more than the actual Portal games.

Regardless of the difficulty I experienced, I think its worth giving a shot for sure.

At first, Gateways looks like a clone of Portal minus the Z-axis. And for the first twenty or so minutes, that's basically what it turns out to be.

However, it isn't long until the game's true nature reveals itself. It's a cross between a metroidvania and a puzzler. The game takes place in a single massive level, and you're supposed to go from place to place gathering powerups that let you go to the next place. Those powerups are new puzzle tools you use to solve the puzzles blocking the way to the next powerup. It even has optional powerups, just like any good metroidvania.

It's put together quite well. There are help points for each puzzle that can first tell you (for a small cost*) if your current powerups are enough to solve the puzzle and, if so, can then show you (for a large cost*) how they are solved. That being said, the puzzles (at least thus far) have been trivially easy to solve. Maybe the tough ones are reserved for the end of the game. We'll see. At least it has a level editor and workshop support.

*These costs are paid with in-game pickups. I figure this is worth clarifying in this day and age of in-app purchases.
