this game is the worst sonic game ever made

each and every stage has a terrible, gimmicky platforming element that COULD work well if it weren't for the terrible camera angles, amazingly inexistant collision detection, and fundamentally broken physics

if you enjoy not seeing anything because the camera placed itself behind the walls of the very tight corridors that make 80% of this game, superly precise platforming with controls that'll make you feel like you are wearing buttery boxing gloves, ear-piercing low-pitch beeps everytime you go through a Tails/Eggman level, and dying because you fell in the nothingness despite your best efforts over and over and over and over again, this game is for you

if you're a masochist, spare yourself the price of this game and stick as many knives inside your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ instead, you'll get a similar experience

anyone who defends this game is a fool and a spawn of satan himself

This game is an utterly overrated piece of hot garbage, and I can honestly say that it has little to no redeeming features whatsoever

Let me start off by saying that I am a huge Sonic fan. I adore the franchise, heck, I even love Sonic Adventure. But this game, hoo boy I have some grievances. Where to start, well let's start with the gameplay.

As with most of these games, the only fun levels are Sonic action stages. However, this game is different, as it has only one fun Sonic action stage. The first one. Which is pretty dang fun. But aside from that, this game is full of buggy cameras, clanky controls and unnecesarry deaths aplenty. That's my main problem I think. In a game, if you die and it's your fault, then great. It is just a hard game and you need to improve. But with this game, almost all of the deaths can be easily pinned onto the game. The buggy camera can easiy redirect your course into a bottomless pit, and the shoddy homing attack often leads to a similar fate.

But that's just Sonic. Knuckles is similar to how he played in SA1, only worse. Rather than his HUD telling you if any emerald shards are nearby, it only tells you about one at a time, which can lead to frustration when you find an emerald shard where you checked several times before. Yes, the game does give you a few hints, but they are mostly cryptic and unhelpful.

Tails is a travesty. His levels forget the Sonic monochre, 'Gotta go fast', and instead provide mind-numbing, shambling gameplay where all you need to do is hold down the action button.

But it's not just the gameplay. The character models look abysmal, the voice acting is just terrible, and the animation is often very stunted. In addition, you will often hear character's voices cutting each other off, leadign to confusion in cutscenes.

The chao garden is fun. I wont dispute that, although again kind of overrated.

The soundtrack is decent, but nothing too special in my opinion. One or two tracks stand out, but to be honest if you buy a game just to hear them, but Sonic Generatons instead.

I will end this review by talking about the final stage. It is a very overly long-winded level spanning multiple characters. However, certain parts are so ridiculously hard in comparison to the rest of the game, that many players may nto see it through.
Buy at your own risk, nostalgia can be blinding.

Note of warning, this is not the original Sonic Adventure 2 for the Dreamcast. Instead, it is the remake for the Gamecube; however, you have to pay to access those extra features. This version of the game is shown to be the Dreamcast version, but with some of the Gamecube features (Back Market and the Fortune Teller for example.) Basically, this is the remake with the extra content removed. Unless you wish to fully complete the game by reaching 180 emblems, you will NEED to buy the DLC. The DLC adds a few more emblems to the game that you will need to get to unlock the hidden stage in Stage Select; moreover, these are mandatory if you wish to unlock all of the achievements.

In short, you have to pay to access content that SHOULD ALREADY BE GIVEN TO YOU.

The chao garden is THE BEST THING TO EVER EXIST! Ok not really but it is really fun and addictive suprisingly.

Overall I'd say i enjoyed the game but I prefer the first game

If you've played this game before, then dropping a few dollars on it could be worth it. But if you haven't and you're interested in Dreamcast-era Sonic, then prepare yourself.

Some of the cons of the game include cheap enemy placement, a handful of crappy levels with questionable designs (particulary Pyramid Cave, Crazy Gadget, the car levels, Mad Space, and Final Chase), RNG, terrible camera angles, audio mixing, and the strain required to get A-ranks sometimes (especially for perfectionists). You'll open a door, immediately get hit by one of those Chaos ♥♥♥♥ers, and lose all your rings; you'll get screwed over by dumb mechanics like manipulating gravity and trying to traverse poorly designed half-pipes in Green Forest; you'll have to navigate a treasure hunting level that's a lot bigger than it should be and have a hit-or-miss attempt in doing well in general due to random emerald placement; you'll barely see what you're doing sometimes; and you'll be more than frustrated when you can't get the best rank for a level and have to play over it again. Note emphasis on using "you'll" alot, because all these things do happen. You will get angry playing this game at least once.

Some people like the story, others don't. The voice acting and lip-syncing can be bad from time to time too, but it's a Sonic game at the end of the day. Whether you care or not is up to you, but I don't think of them as a totally significant parts of the game unlike '06 and Unleashed.

As for pros, the game has some pretty good music, a fair bit of stages that are pretty fun (like all the Sonic and Shadow levels besides the ones mentioned above), an interesting story, presentation, and gameplay concept of hero versus dark, and gameplay value in terms of collecting rings to buy stuff for the Chao Garden and doing up to five missions per level out of the 31 in the game (though the fifth mission on each level makes you want to die). If you do like collecting in games, then SA2 does well to appease. I can definitely say that the pros outweigh the cons in a general sense, but it may not be so apparent sometimes.

And on a side note: you'll either like the Chao Garden or you just won't care at all. It's a virtual pet simulator.

The difficulty of the game comes from a few of the aforementioned cons like bad camera angles and RNG. As you play levels over and over, you'll get used to stuff like the timing of jumping off ramps, how enemies appear from literally nowhere, and overcoming the bad detection in light dashing and difficulty in making precise movements at times. So really, your first playthrough might not be that great. You just have to keep getting used to it and get in flow with the game, because it's definitely necessary to get all 180 A-ranks.

But really, Sonic and Shadow levels are either easy or annoying, Knuckles and Rouge levels can drag sometimes, and Tails and Eggman levels just require abusing the lock-on function to get get score bonuses. That's the basic gist of it.

So yeah, getting used to how this game works makes the mentioned pros all the more enjoyable. Being able to deal with how this game varies in quality often is the best way to experience it. There's not a Sonic game really like SA2 besides its predecessor in the series. If you haven't played this game before in your childhood or any other time like most people here, then be ready for something totally new. And if you have, prepare to relive the weird but charming mix of frustration and joy.

Oh, and this game pretty much requires the use of a gamepad too.

NOTE: This made made with the BATTLE DLC

One of the best Sonic games of all time featuring 6 playable characters, 3 playable stories, an amazingly fun and adorable chao garden, and a great soundtrack. Sadly, this game doesn't fully support Intel HD graphics and causes the infamous "floating vehicle" glitch in City Escape. (It doesn't seem like SEGA will fix this anytime soon)

Nostalgia, Chao Garden, going fast, edgy hedgehogs, yosh, mad space literally makes me mad simulator.

I guess it’s fair comment to say that a good sequel should in most cases improve on what the original game did well and fix or reduce those elements that were not so strong. Sonic Adventure 2 does exactly this - the exhilarating speeds achieved in the classic Sonic games are the best hallmark of the series, and that brings me nicely onto the structure of Adventure 2.

The main story is split into the Hero and Dark campaigns, each with unique levels and cutscenes. Hero mode follows Sonic, Knuckles and Tails as they attempt to destroy Eggman’s latest acquisition, the Eclipse Cannon invented by his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, which contains the power to destroy an entire planet (haven’t heard that one before). Meanwhile, the Dark story sees the doctor awaken the ‘ultimate life form’, a black hedgehog named Shadow who wields the devastating ‘Chaos Control’ and rivals our hero Sonic in speed and power.

Sonic and Shadow’s stages are speed-based, encouraging racing through the level as quickly as possible, performing tricks and chaining enemy-rending combos as you go. These areas feel much more tightly designed than in Adventure, with multiple paths and shortcuts available. Enemy placement is also set up to make sequential homing attacks easy and there’s enormous fun to be had in trying to beat record times.

Treasure Hunt stages also return from the first game, featuring Knuckles the Echidna and Rouge the Bat, a silky-voiced jewel thief with mysterious motives. As before, you have a radar which bleeps the closer you get to pieces of the Master Emerald, but these levels are now segmented into very distinct areas which makes navigating them much simpler, and the provided clues easier to understand.

Finally Tails and Dr Eggman have shooting stages to contend with, developed from E-102 Gamma’s levels in the first game. These are nicely different and encourage a slightly more conservative playstyle, as the walker mechs you pilot are rather slow, albeit with incredible firepower.

Item upgrades are present in most stages for each character, such as the Light Dash for Sonic and Shadow allowing them to rush through chains of rings at lightning speeds and the Air Necklace for treasure hunters, bestowing underwater breathing which can make later stages substantially more bearable. Stages each boast five different challenges for a total of five emblems per level, and you will need to make return trips to unlock every upgrade so keep your eye out!

Mercifully the Amy and Big the Cat type stages from Adventure are nowhere to be seen. Good riddance, I wouldn’t wish them on anybody.

Bosses are encountered throughout both stories, and completing both the Hero and Dark campaigns reveals the true story, and as much as I would love to go into it, that would be telling.
Both stories are very generic to the fullest extent of the word, with the slight caveat that to understand a lot of Shadow’s backstory for future games, Sonic Adventure 2 is really the place to the start - it’s the simplest way to get to grips with his motives and feelings, and it’s a good stepping stone to access Sonic Heroes or Shadow the Hedgehog if you’re feeling particularly brave.

In the modern Steam release (a PC port of the Gamecube Sonic 2 Battle version) the game looks perfect and scales perfectly to 16:9 resolutions. Graphics are sharp, there is no flickering and the soundtrack is kick-♥♥♥, with a mixture of driving rock for faster stages and more subdued melodies for levels that take a little longer - overall it feels extremely well balanced and performance should be great even on less powerful machines. Escape from the City is as good as it ever was and remains one of my favourite levels in any game ever due to its watertight design and amazing theme tune.

The voice acting was famously bad in the first game, and unfortunately this hasn’t been fixed in the second entry. There is a very noticeable problem with the lines of dialogue in cutscenes overlapping and running into one another - it’s honestly pretty bad and although this doesn’t bother me too much because I’ve played the game many times before, you should be aware of this as it seems to just be a marker of developer oversight as far as I can tell, which is really unexcusable in the means of story delivery.

Now I obviously have to give special kudos to the incredibly extensive chao breeding system - it’s been improved and refined from the first game and allows a great degree of customisation to breed themed chaos with the stats of your choice. Chaos drives and captured animals can be given to your chaos to change their appearance and characteristics, and rings collected during stages spent on food and items for them, or even rare chao eggs!

There are emblems available from the Chao Races and Karate challenges if you pick up the Battle DLC, so it’s definitely worth investing your time into. As I remarked in my Let’s Play of this title, I know several people that own the game purely for this subgame, which must say something as to the quality. Trying to raise Hero chaos, Dark chaos, Angel chaos, animal chaos, there’s so much to do and so much to unlock, it can get a little overwhelming. This is true of the game on the whole actually, and one area in which the developers almost tried to do too much.

There are 180 emblems in the game, which is a staggering amount, and obviously having more to do per dollar invested is a good thing. However this is achieved by attaching emblems to repetitive side-missions such as collecting 100 rings, finding a hidden Chao in each stage and completing missions in Hard Mode. Again in theory this sounds fantastic, but these objectives become extremely monotonous and I simply found myself replaying the standard level goals for which I already had the emblem rather than being hindered by somewhat abstract goals.

Searching carefully for a lost Chao, for example, totally takes the speed out of the runner levels, which is what they’re supposed to be about, and the same is true of collecting rings in the shooter stages, where you’re extremely easy to hit due to your large frames and rings can be pretty scarce in the stages anyway. Since you lose every single ring when you’re hit and only 20 are scattered around you, you may need to run through stages multiple times to achieve your goal.

Let’s face it, Sonic Adventure is a bit of a travesty to play nowadays - it looks and feels extremely dated and almost haphazard. The open hub worlds felt utterly pointless, and the less said about those awful fishing stages the better. Adventure 2 kept the good and chucked the crap, while improving on what made the interesting stages feel so exhilarating in the first place. The treasure hunt and shooting levels still pale in comparison to the runners, but what else do you expect from a true Sonic game? It’s a great entry in the series and perfect for newcomers as well as veterans - grab a copy today.

Just like you remember on the DC (or Gamecube if you were a traitor) but smoother, and the added benefit of a 360 pad or controller of your choice. Ported smoothley to Steam, and worth buying again
