About This Game

****New Content Available****
The free expansion, FTL: Advanced Edition, is available now! Content additions include: new alien race, events, weapons, playable ships, drones, and more! Also adds additional musical tracks by Ben Prunty, and events by Tom Jubert and guest writer Chris Avellone.

If you already own FTL it should update the new content automatically. Advanced Edition is included free for anyone who purchases the game from this point forward.

In FTL you experience the atmosphere of running a spaceship trying to save the galaxy. It's a dangerous mission, with every encounter presenting a unique challenge with multiple solutions. What will you do if a heavy missile barrage shuts down your shields? Reroute all power to the engines in an attempt to escape, power up additional weapons to blow your enemy out of the sky, or take the fight to them with a boarding party? This "spaceship simulation roguelike-like" allows you to take your ship and crew on an adventure through a randomly generated galaxy filled with glory and bitter defeat.

Key Features:

  • Complex Strategic Gameplay - Give orders to your crew, manage ship power distribution and choose weapon targets in the heat of battle.
  • Play at Your Own Speed - Pause the game mid-combat to evaluate your strategy and give orders.
  • Unique Lifeforms and Technology – Upgrade your ship and unlock new ones with the help of six diverse alien races.
  • Be the Captain You Want - Hundreds of text based encounters will force you to make tough decisions.
  • Randomized Galaxy - Each play-through will feature different enemies, events, and results to your decisions. No two play-throughs will be quite the same.
  • No Second Chances! - Permadeath means when you die, there's no coming back. The constant threat of defeat adds importance and tension to every action.

FTL is about
- risk,
- managing your ship,
- and the feeling of being Jean-Luc Picard ... xD

Makes a lot of fun (for a short time).

This game has great potential, but the execution is horrible. The learning curve isn't the problem, nor are the battle mechanics. Even the layout is fine. There are two major problems: the limitations of gameplay; and the lack of limitation of enemies early on.

You can't go back to a place you went to previously, so if you get some currency and want to go buy the item you couldn't afford before, you can't. It could be a regular space station and the game still won't let you go back there.

You can battle enemies in the first place you go, but it's so randomized that you may get an enemy that is unbeatable at your current stage in the game. This is the main reason people constantly die in this game. You are very limited in your options, but the computer random generator has no limitation. You can be the best player in the world and still constantly die in this game due to back luck. I can't recommend a game where winning the game depends entirely on luck.

FTL is a rougelike spaceship adventure simulator in which every action determines the fate of your crew and the success of your mission.
+Combat:Simple but has depth with later access to different weapons you can buy through your travels(Shooting missiles into the enemy life support quickly turns into mind controlling fun as you watch the enemy ship attempt to control their own crew).
+Graphics:2D but still nice to look at and keeps everything simple enough when you need to make split second decisions when you're in a heated space duel with dirty pirates.
+Music:A bit repetitive but keeps the ambience calm after fighting and is a bit relaxing even when not actually playing the game.
+Story:Now the initial story is a bit weak as you are a scout for the Galactic Federation and your mission is to traverse the galaxy and warn them about the impending rebel invasion(which is pointless I might add as by the time you actually warn them the invasion force is literally right behind you) but the real way to flesh out the story is all the adventures you have with you and your crew as you will often find yourself getting quite attached to those little sprites thus making every death that much more impactful.
-Difficulty:Similar to X-Com the game will ramp up whether you want to or not and making the right decisions and upgrades during key parts of the game will determine whether or not you will be able to climb the mountain with a nice coat and backpack full of supplies or naked with a spoon.
-So far I've been suffocated, eaten by spiders, eaten by zombies, burned, and blown up during my time playing this game.
Overall:(9/10)A definite must buy for fans of the genre as it is one hell of an experience.

Unforgivingly fun.

One of those games where you have to learn by having a hands on approach because every run is always different than the last.

Your weapons will be taken offiline, then your engines, as you struggle to repair them, you will be boarded. Your crew will be massacred. Desperately, you will vent the ship into space to attempt to suffocate your enemies. As they perish and you hold on by the skin of your teeth, repair broken systems, lick your wounds, and salvage what you can. Then jump into the unknown again. Live on the knife edge. The promise of failure at every turn makes victory all the sweeter.

Everyone burned to death. Then everyone suffocated to death. Then, a few runs later, everyone was burned, suffocated, and blasted to death.

Giant spiders ate my crew, strange monoliths evaporated them, and asteroids turned them into fine, dehydrated powders drifting through the void.

Then I started getting better. I stayed away from the spiders, I vented the oxygen out of burning rooms, rather than sending a single hapless insectoid to fight the flames. And then, one glorious day, after so much blood, sweat, and tears, I destroyed the rebel flagship and won the game.

That was 40 hours in. There was still much to be done. This was before Advanced Edition came out, of course, so the unlock quests were the only ways to unlock all of the ships. And how long did it take me to obtain the Crystal Cruiser? 100 more hours.

That brings us to the present day, when I'm 450 hours in, and still banging out a game every week or two. And so, if you're still on the fence about buying FTL: Faster Than Light, ask yourself this: do you want a game that you'll play once and never touch again, or do you want a game that still has tons of replay-value after a frankly embarassing amount of time?

Personal Rating: Terrific but unforgiving Space Sim
Classic Rating: ★★★★☆

What makes FTL good for me?

✓ Spaaaace: this is a quite simple Space Simulator and yet it's features' rich.
✓ Great atmosphere, short game sessions and high replay value.
✓ Excellent Soundtrack, fits perfectly into gameplay.
✓ Cute graphics, even if it lacks a proper fullscreen/high res setting.

And then it's tough too because of:

✘ RNG, which can be so frustrating.
✘ Permadeath: True, you cannot save mid-game, you can only save and quit (to continue later).
✘ A lot of micromanagement involved: every choice is hard to make and you can get killed in so many ways, each time a different one.

I believe every one owns FTL already but if you don't yet, take advantage of the next sale and give it a go.

I died.

Then I got smart...

... and died again.

Then I got clever...

... and died again.

Then I got courageous...

... and died 12 more times.

Then I logged out...

... and died again.

Then I logged back in...

... and guess what happened?

I died again.

Best death simulation game ever created.

Oh and the roguelike is pretty cool too.

Stop reading and push the green 'add to cart' button.

If you don't. . . that means you want to live.

FTL has kept me interested for 66 hours already and I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Every time you start a new game, the outcome is different and engaging. Although you follow the same general storyline in every play through, it still introduces new challenges and thought provoking events. You are constantly running into issues where you have to make hard moral decisions that will affect your progress in the game.

I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys happiness. 12/10

This game is extremely tough. I'm a AAA title, high end pc gamer, and this game is on my top 10 list. it may not look like GTA V or Crysis, but it's engaging, challenging, and addictive.

pick it up on sale for like 2 bucks, can't go wrong.
