About This Game

****New Content Available****
The free expansion, FTL: Advanced Edition, is available now! Content additions include: new alien race, events, weapons, playable ships, drones, and more! Also adds additional musical tracks by Ben Prunty, and events by Tom Jubert and guest writer Chris Avellone.

If you already own FTL it should update the new content automatically. Advanced Edition is included free for anyone who purchases the game from this point forward.

In FTL you experience the atmosphere of running a spaceship trying to save the galaxy. It's a dangerous mission, with every encounter presenting a unique challenge with multiple solutions. What will you do if a heavy missile barrage shuts down your shields? Reroute all power to the engines in an attempt to escape, power up additional weapons to blow your enemy out of the sky, or take the fight to them with a boarding party? This "spaceship simulation roguelike-like" allows you to take your ship and crew on an adventure through a randomly generated galaxy filled with glory and bitter defeat.

Key Features:

  • Complex Strategic Gameplay - Give orders to your crew, manage ship power distribution and choose weapon targets in the heat of battle.
  • Play at Your Own Speed - Pause the game mid-combat to evaluate your strategy and give orders.
  • Unique Lifeforms and Technology – Upgrade your ship and unlock new ones with the help of six diverse alien races.
  • Be the Captain You Want - Hundreds of text based encounters will force you to make tough decisions.
  • Randomized Galaxy - Each play-through will feature different enemies, events, and results to your decisions. No two play-throughs will be quite the same.
  • No Second Chances! - Permadeath means when you die, there's no coming back. The constant threat of defeat adds importance and tension to every action.

This game is honestly one of my favourite games. Of all time. Most people would immediately look past it due to it's seemingly "outdated" graphics. Those people, are what we call a fine shade of "wrong". The graphics, joined with the music, are a spectacle to behold (Especially, especially, the intro theme, I love the main part), and fit so well together. It has something about it- Kindof like saying "It's so Synthesized, it sounds a little bit instrumental". Maybe that's my imagination, maybe it's not.

But onto the review.
In this game, you pilot one of ten ships (Unlocked either by beating the final boss on the ship before, or doing a special quest you find in the space of each of the respective races (Aside from one...)) that are with the Federation (Just like Star Trek!), who are under attack by the "Rebels" (Just. Like. Star- Wait, nevermind), and are going to be destroyed. This is where you come in. You're the pilot of one of said ships on a mission to get back to federation space, destroying Space pirates, and Rebels, along the way, all while being chased by the rebel forces. Now, from that description, one might think this is an action-shooter. That is extremely wrong. at times, there is a lot of action, but it is nowhere near your Asteroids or Side-scroll shooters. This is a game of Strategy. You must use different types of weapons (Bought, found on ships, sometimes found floating in space, from time to time given to you at the end of "sectors" (More later on that)) working together to bring down the enemy ships (My general tactic is to primarily disable weapons, then shield as they reestabilish weapons, and so on), with different weapon types doing different things.

Weapons. There is lots of weapons. They divide into 4 (5?) categories: Laser, Missile, Beam, Bomb, and (in Advanced edition (Free with the game)) Chain weapons= Chain Vulcan= Laser. Machine gun.
But the LaserMachineguns aside, they all have different purposes: Lasers are your standardized weapon: Cannot pierce shields, having to go through them, dealing damage to systems and ship and crew; Missiles are for more... "Assassination" They pierce all shields, and unless destroyed by drone, are going to mess up the enemies (Or your) day. Beam weapons are a little like Lasers, in the fact that they have to go through shields, with each layer they have to go through removing one damage from the laser on hitting the ship itself, and will hit multiple rooms. Bombs are essentially missiles that incur different status effects on the enemy ship, like lighting it on fire, stunning crew, both, etc.

The events. From finding ships encased in crystal to freaking giant spiders on space stations, there's a lot of them, which can happen within different sectors, and have different outcomes if you have a specific type of crew member (Of which you can only have eight, but you can place them anywhere on the ship you want), sometimes you'll stumble upon something that even unlocks you a new ship!

tl;dr - This game is a strategic masterpiece, the difficulty ranging from "Why does it have missiles?!" to "OH MY GOD IT HAS FOUR SHIELDS AND MISSILES" and requires to think more than most other games I can name. Recommended.

Fun and addictive. You can fly a selection of ships ranging from the classic ship, to a ship that is inhabited by mutant slug things. You have one flight to get to Area 8 and beat the Final Boss. On said flight, you pickup weapons, drones, and anything useful. It is amazing.

FTL, what can I say it's somewhat a strategy game. It's got a little action too. Gentle learning curve but you'll get the hang of it pretty fast. I'm sure there's plenty of other reviews that explain the game concept so I won't dig into that.

What stands out to me playing FTL is the character of the game. It's remenesent of some of the retro strategy/simulator games I used to play with sprite based graphics. I forgot how much I loved sprites. They just look so sharp. I just wish there was more sprite effects with the weapons and damage. What can I say I like looking at the pixels! On a slight technical note, I have a 144Hz BenQ with strobe. And these games looks like your playing it on a CRT if you can get your monitor to strobe (it eliminates almost all blur from the LCD as things move around you can see it in action @

The gameplay for me getting off the ground was rather difficult. Even on easy I was getting my rear-end kicked. I think there is some serious balance issues with how much scrap you get (you need more). And the ability to warp to other parts further away in a single jump, than weaving around (especially at the end when you might need to make a trip back to the store before you get to the boss).

It's stable, dosent crash, runs great (my GTX 980 just idles, lil' overkill). It's good. Can't wait to see where it goes next.

I Recommend it.

Very replayable. Great buy, especially if you can get it on sale / in a bundle. One of a few games I can repeatedly come back to and play in my free time without getting permanently tired of it.

Everyone burned to death. Then everyone suffocated to death. Then, a few runs later, everyone was burned, suffocated, and blasted to death.

Giant spiders ate my crew, strange monoliths evaporated them, and asteroids turned them into fine, dehydrated powders drifting through the void.

Then I started getting better. I stayed away from the spiders, I vented the oxygen out of burning rooms, rather than sending a single hapless insectoid to fight the flames. And then, one glorious day, after so much blood, sweat, and tears, I destroyed the rebel flagship and won the game.

That was 40 hours in. There was still much to be done. This was before Advanced Edition came out, of course, so the unlock quests were the only ways to unlock all of the ships. And how long did it take me to obtain the Crystal Cruiser? 100 more hours.

That brings us to the present day, when I'm 450 hours in, and still banging out a game every week or two. And so, if you're still on the fence about buying FTL: Faster Than Light, ask yourself this: do you want a game that you'll play once and never touch again, or do you want a game that still has tons of replay-value after a frankly embarassing amount of time?

Personal Rating: Terrific but unforgiving Space Sim
Classic Rating: ★★★★☆

What makes FTL good for me?

✓ Spaaaace: this is a quite simple Space Simulator and yet it's features' rich.
✓ Great atmosphere, short game sessions and high replay value.
✓ Excellent Soundtrack, fits perfectly into gameplay.
✓ Cute graphics, even if it lacks a proper fullscreen/high res setting.

And then it's tough too because of:

✘ RNG, which can be so frustrating.
✘ Permadeath: True, you cannot save mid-game, you can only save and quit (to continue later).
✘ A lot of micromanagement involved: every choice is hard to make and you can get killed in so many ways, each time a different one.

I believe every one owns FTL already but if you don't yet, take advantage of the next sale and give it a go.

Then I got courageous...

Best death simulation game ever created.

Oh and the roguelike is pretty cool too.

FTL has kept me interested for 66 hours already and I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Every time you start a new game, the outcome is different and engaging. Although you follow the same general storyline in every play through, it still introduces new challenges and thought provoking events. You are constantly running into issues where you have to make hard moral decisions that will affect your progress in the game.

I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys happiness. 12/10

This game is extremely tough. I'm a AAA title, high end pc gamer, and this game is on my top 10 list. it may not look like GTA V or Crysis, but it's engaging, challenging, and addictive.

pick it up on sale for like 2 bucks, can't go wrong.
