Man vs Machine

What’s this, a dev diary on a Monday?! Yes, it’s true, we’ve moved them to Mondays so they’ll coincide with CK2 streams. The Reaper’s Due has been out for a while now, and I am very pleased with how both it and the free update were received (I wasn’t sure the focus on Death would be so universally appreciated!) As Game Director, I rarely have time to do much coding and scripting anymore, but I did help out with the optimizations and several of the Game Rules. The game is in safe hands though; the current CK2-team has done an amazing job so far!

Work has now commenced on the next expansion and I can already reveal it’s going to be something a bit similar to Way of Life, which I believe I actually mentioned in my previous dev diary. I also promised optimizations, AI improvements and quality of life stuff. Well, the optimizations are done for now, so the next major free update will feature AI and GUI improvements, which brings me to today’s topic; usability.

Now, we are aiming to tweak several interfaces and while I cannot go into much detail yet, I can say that I’d especially like to address the following main areas:

  • Plotting (quality of life)
  • Prisoner management
  • Guardian vs Educator (clarity)
  • More space for Traits and Character Modifiers
There are other things in the works too, but when you’ve worked on a game for so many years you tend to get blind to many usability issues and simply accept them as they are. That is why I’d like to hear from you, our faithful fans, what you find most annoying and clunky about the CK2 interfaces. Are there any actions you find hard to do, or useful information you cannot easily find (or not at all)? All feedback is welcome!

That is all for now; please post your suggestions on our official forum...

CK2 Dev Diary#24: The 2.6.2 patch

Hello and welcome back to another CK2 Development Diary. The 2.6.2 update looms rather near now, and if everything goes to plan it should be released on Thursday. I’ll start out with the bad news; due to some unforeseen problems one of the game rules I mentioned last week will not be included with this patch: The Multiplayer Assassination rule. However, we do have two other game rules for you which you may find interesting:

  1. De jure Requirement: Default/Required. On default, nothing changes, but with “Required” characters who hold titles which have de jure land will eventually lose the title if they don’t hold any of the de jure land.
  2. Horse Lords:Nomad Stability: Unstable/Stable. Now when a Khagan dies, his vassals have the possibility to break away and form their own realms -with the new Khagan getting a CB on them. Setting “Stable” keeps the old behaviour.

There was some outcry last week because Jews and Zoroastrians didn’t also get a crusader style trait, so I’ve managed to sneak both in with the Shaddai and Gond-i Shahanshah traits. While we were in a trait-adding mood, both Cannibal and Lover’s Pox were changed from character modifiers to traits (although we have left the old modifier checks in place so ongoing games aren’t broken).

The Gender Equality gamerule and laws revealed a few problems with Muslim events always assuming Muslim rulers would be male, so we’re spend a bit of time adding the appropriate checks which should result in a more flavourful Muslim experience.

As well as this, there are plenty of small fixes and additions to many other things, but I’ll let you explore the game and/or the patchnotes to discover them for yourselves.

Full patch notes in original thread
(These are works in progress, when the patch is released we’ll post a final version)

And, last of all, from next week onwards we’ll be posting CK2 DDs on Mondays instead of Tuesdays.

“...playing is winning, and there’s something quite satisfying about leading your house to power and glory through whatever means you can, for as long as you can.”
9,5/10 – Strategy Informer

“In short, Crusader Kings II is a majestic feudal sandbox, the greatest generator of hilarious medieval soap opera ever created and Paradox Interactive’s best title to date.”
90/100 – IncGamers

“It's perfectly possible to have made a few too many enemies, anger the Pope and find most of Europe out for your blood. That's really what makes the game so damn fun.”
9/10 – Destructoid

About This Game

The Dark Ages might be drawing to a close, but Europe is still in turmoil. Petty lords vie against beleaguered kings who struggle to assert control over their fragmented realms. The Pope calls for a Crusade to protect the Christians in the Holy Land even as he refuses to relinquish control over the investiture of bishops - and their riches. Now is the time for greatness. Expand your demesne and secure the future of your dynasty. Fill your coffers, appoint vassals, root out traitors and heretics, introduce laws and interact with hundreds of nobles, each with their own agenda.
A good lord will always need friends to support him. But beware, as loyal vassals can quickly turn to bitter rivals, and some might not be as reliable as they seem... Stand ready, and increase your prestige until the world whispers your name in awe. Do you have what it takes to become a Crusader King?

Then realize my darling boy has a slight claim on the entire Byzantine empire

I start winning the battle slight hope enters my eyes
Useless son loses the right flank
I become imprisoned
My son runs away
I realize quickly how Byzantines treat those accused of treason

My First Proper Game
- Start out as a single province in Ireland.
- Set up my court and give out titles.
- Get married. Make an heir.
- Everything is going amazingly.
- Declare War on the neighbouring province.
- Win the war flawlessly.
- Give province to my most trusted courtier.
- Declare War on the another neighbouring province.
- Win the war flawlessly, again.
- Give province to my other trusted courtier.
- Life is going incredibly well, soon Ireland will be mine!
- SUDDENLY, one of my stupid vassals rebels for no reason!
- Crush the rebels and go completely mad, imprisoning him and all of his family then executing them all! No mercy for traitors!
- Everyone hates me including my wife!
- People starting plotting against me left and right!
- I get super paranoid and start executing everyone!
- My other vassal rebels.
- Some random place I've never heard of declares war on me.
- My army is totally crushed.
- Laugh like a mad man and lose EVERYTHING.
- Game over.

10/10 would go completely insane and lose everything again.

At first the DLC expansions sounded like a good idea.

Then they started breeding faster than the Zerg.
I stopped playing the game altogether because it always feels incomplete since I can't afford to buy all the (gameplay) DLCs at the rate they are putting them out.

To top things off, Paradox stopped putting DLCs on a 75% off discount, and you can hope for 66% at most. Doesn't sound like much of a difference, but hey, 1000x 1 euro is a lot.

Unless the publisher puts out a DLC bundle (which gives you a discount based on how much DLCs you already have) I'll probably never play this again.

Whew, managed to go throught the review without comparing them to EA and Ubisoft. Oh -

To any outsider, what I am about to write will make me seem like a comolete maniac. Its been 5 hours and I ♥♥♥♥ing love it.

I began as a small lord in southern Ireland.
After slowly building my vassals opinion towards me, I claimed my true fate to be the king of Ireland.
First step was declaring war on my only southern neighbor and claimed the land that 'belonged' to me.
War was over quickly.
Due to my enemy's alliance, I also conquer a small county to the east.
Relative peace ensues for a few years.
I marry with a french noble woman.
Non agression pact eith france.

Decades later, I have four heirs, two of each gender.
One of the vassals who was annexed starts plotting against me.
I throw him in jail and castrate him for good measure.
My son desagrees with me so he leaves my kingdom.
Shortly after coming back, I am assassinated by him.
I now play as him.

First step is to secure my power, my brother is blinded, castrated and maimed while in jail.
I marry off my sisters to roman emperors.
So far so good.

Then it starts downhill.
I start an afaur with my cusin, then deny the kid is mine.
Panicking, I threw her in jail which caussed dissent within the kingdom.
The vassal who disliked my father was freed and escaped.
Two years lster he came back with an army.
This is all while i begin going mad, killing the queen and marrying to a wo.an from norway sick with syphilis.
I also begin having affairs with 3 of my noblemans wifes.
The blind ♥♥♥♥er who escaped is recaptured as is his wife and daugter.
My king is a tyrant and hated by mu vassals.
Of my now 6 kids, all of them are imprisoned anf tortured.
I begin to seek more heirs.
I ♥♥♥♥ my enemys wife and several other noblewomen.
No heirs.
Slowly, my heirs die in prison as i spread syphilis to all my corrupt noblemen.
I die alone, mad and hated.

Currently, my heir, a handless kind man is the one I control.
Slowly rebuilding the ruputation of my family. Next step: Invade the north.

Probably the best game I've played in a long, long, time.

In my opinion, it's more choice & consequence focused RPG than strategy game. At least, that's how I've been playing for twenty hours, thus far. I've had so much fun as my randy Transylvanian duke, with a penchant for seducing every woman at court, and the wives of others - sadly, he later died in his bed due to a mysterious snake being in there with him; haters gonna hate, I suppose.

I had hoped you could play as a religious order, or an unlanded noble - that would make for even more awesome roleplaying - unfortunately you can't.

I highly recommend this, with some of the major DLC - especially ones which add even more character interaction, choices, mechanics, etc. I'm currently playing as a merchant prince of Venice, and it really is a very different experience - I feel like some sort of mob boss.

My only complaint is the battle system. It's often just a frustration - which is why I was glad I didn't have to focus on it as a merchant prince of Venice.

(P.S. I only fell in love with this game when I stopped playing it as a pure strategy game, and played it for the immersive character interactions. Haven't been able to stop playing it since.)

I played CK2 using ireland from the year 887( Or near enough to it).
I managed to conqure the rest of Ireland, Take most of the UK from the lords and kings over there.
My first king managed to live to 100yr, but once he got to like 50yr things started to go a bit downhill (Madness).
My younger wife was very bitter after finding out i been having an affair for a number of years with another woman.
So to take revenge she decided once she became my regent that she was going to claim more and more of my land as her own (For the good of the kingdom in her words..yeah right).
This on my death and all the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s i bread meant my hair didnt get to be king for very long before getting killed by one of his half brothers...
This half brother then decided to mary into a muslim fraction.
This wasnt much of a problem until his hair decided he wanted to follow his mothers religion and then went on to change the religion of Ireland and most of the UK that i claimed.
Its now the year 1024, it seems everyone hates me.
No one seems to want to marry my children,
A number of different fractions are coming for my head and my gold is running low.
10 out of 10: Would become most wanted death man in the world again.

There once was a land called Europe

With constant wars, it was quite a stir-up

And from up north, came the Viking Norse

And from the east, arrived the Mongols with a horse

So all their raids and violence were quite coarse.

(Seriously, expect your ♥♥♥ to get kicked at least once in this game. It's like Risk, if the board was suddenly lit on fire halfway through the game.)
