Easing Executions

It’s Monday again, and you know what that means: a Dev Diary! It’s time to start talking about new features in an upcoming DLC which I can’t name yet. For DDs we prefer to talk about things we’ve already implemented, but this <Mystery DLC> is still in the very early stages so you’re going to see some mockups which hopefully convey the idea of what we are going for without being an exact representation - don’t be surprised if the final result looks rather different though.

With that said, the basic idea is to give the Intrigue screen more room for Decisions and Prisoners. As well as that, a system of filters and a set of “do to all currently shown” buttons to Release/Ransom/Execute multiple characters at once:

Ideally we’ll also have a lock button on characters so they can be excluded from mass actions, and radio buttons would likely be better than our traditional dropdown lists.

That’s it for now, I did warn you I would make some short DDs sometimes!

Patch 2.6.2 Released

Hi all!

We're now releasing the 2.6.2 patch together with improvements and fixes for the EU4-CK2 converter.

Warning: Using modding traits from 2.6.1 or earlier since the new 2.6.2 traits will break them.

2.6.2 summary

The 2.6.2 patch has been in Open Beta for a while so that we would keep the performance on a good level and we now feel ready to release it. The patch includes new event chains, game rules and bug fixes.

Save games from 2.6.1 should work fine, but as always we can't guarantee that it works 100%.

Converter changes summary

While the converter has been getting updates from time to time to account for new things added in EU4 expansions it is not always making full use of the newer features both in CK2 and EU4. The EU4 1.18 Prussia Patch adds institutions and overhauls technology penalties, again prompting the need to update the converter. We have used this as an opportunity to fix old issues and account for newer features added to the games.

Functionality has been added to adopt your EU4 game to the status of your CK2 one in matters such as dynamic provincial development, government ranks, making the CK2 heresies and religions use the new religion features of EU. Time has also been spent to fix old issues like missing flags for rebels, errors in province mappings, and missing descriptions for the converter religions.

About This Game

The Dark Ages might be drawing to a close, but Europe is still in turmoil. Petty lords vie against beleaguered kings who struggle to assert control over their fragmented realms. The Pope calls for a Crusade to protect the Christians in the Holy Land even as he refuses to relinquish control over the investiture of bishops - and their riches. Now is the time for greatness. Expand your demesne and secure the future of your dynasty. Fill your coffers, appoint vassals, root out traitors and heretics, introduce laws and interact with hundreds of nobles, each with their own agenda.
A good lord will always need friends to support him. But beware, as loyal vassals can quickly turn to bitter rivals, and some might not be as reliable as they seem... Stand ready, and increase your prestige until the world whispers your name in awe. Do you have what it takes to become a Crusader King?

Crusader Kings II is, IMHO, Paradox's best game. It's a grand strategy game that throws many of the popular complexities of the genre such as a complicated tech tree, deep strategic combat, and a rich economy and city building out the window for very simple implementations of each and replaces it all with one thing: interpersonal drama.

It's all about what other people have that you want and what you have that other people want, and it produces epic struggles, dramatic twists of fate, and wonderful soap opera fodder.

At the start of the game if you have a small nation, you can play it a bit like a standard 4X. Locate a smaller neighbor with no major allies, conquer, repeat. As your empire grows, however, you begin to need to split up your holdings among relatives and friends- a province here, a duchy there.

And then those people begin to want things, and have armies, and begin to plan among themselves.

And maybe you have too many children, and those who aren't getting enough of the land start to hate you. And maybe your king dies and his underaged heir who fewer people like and nobody respects takes over under the care of one of your trusted vassels, who may even now be plotting regicide.

When that daughter you married off a decade ago and forgot about suddenly inheriets a third of the Holy Roman Empire due to an accident of inheritance laws and a suspiciously high mortality rate among the nobility? The knives will begin to come out before the crown has had time to settle on her brow, and damage control doesn't even begin to cover what follows.

Play enough of this game, and familicide won't even be an interesting enough story to warrant telling your spouse about after another play session where you stayed up three hours later than you wanted it.

Crusader Kings II is big, and imposing, and takes a long time to play, but there's pretty much nothing like it out there. It might take a dozen hours before you really get what's going on, and I suspect most people who even try it will bounce off of it without understanding why it's such a big deal. If it bites into you, though, your time will be repaid with an endless array of amazing stories and crazy alternate histories of Europe.

:sees that one of my vassals has a claim on the kingdom of germany
:time for war!
:makes my self the leader of the army
:"Woman can fight and lead just as well as men! Il'l show you world!" i said
:the first battle begins between the saxons and the scandinavians, with my glorius female ruler leading the charge
:she imediatly dies on the second day of battle
:back to being a man
:*immediatly starts revoking all status of woman and making it so they cant inherate

I played CK2 using ireland from the year 887( Or near enough to it).
I managed to conqure the rest of Ireland, Take most of the UK from the lords and kings over there.
My first king managed to live to 100yr, but once he got to like 50yr things started to go a bit downhill (Madness).
My younger wife was very bitter after finding out i been having an affair for a number of years with another woman.
So to take revenge she decided once she became my regent that she was going to claim more and more of my land as her own (For the good of the kingdom in her words..yeah right).
This on my death and all the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s i bread meant my hair didnt get to be king for very long before getting killed by one of his half brothers...
This half brother then decided to mary into a muslim fraction.
This wasnt much of a problem until his hair decided he wanted to follow his mothers religion and then went on to change the religion of Ireland and most of the UK that i claimed.
Its now the year 1024, it seems everyone hates me.
No one seems to want to marry my children,
A number of different fractions are coming for my head and my gold is running low.
10 out of 10: Would become most wanted death man in the world again.

Found a 12 year old duchess of Galicia with quick, attractive, ambitious and kinslayer. Her father and brother died suspiciously, older sister killed, mother and younger sister still locked in the dungeon. Betrothed my only son to her,few years later, guess who has to play a 2 year old boy with a young queen regent?

10 twelve year old kinslayers out of 10

Had the game since release but it never really clicked for me until the recent character focused patches + Conclave + Way of Life DLC. Now I can't recommend CK2 highly enough - one of the best, most rewarding and complex strategy games I've ever played and I've been all over the genre since Dune II!

Really more of an 'incredible medieval dynastic sim' than simple strategy game at this point late in development, the "random" stories that emerge around the characters and the board state are unique every time you play and freqently more engrossing than those in scripted RPGs.

This game is like trying to build a spaceship out of toothpicks inside a hyperbolic time chamber. It's so monumentally ♥♥♥♥ed up. I have no idea how they invented this total madness.

My first run through, while I was learning the game, I spent 26 hours forgetting to eat, sleep, shower or function in any normal capacity. It's been a long time since a game destroyed me this badly. 10/10.

This game is very good. It's a combination of strategy and management of the State. You can feel the role of the ruler and head of state. You can take the fate of their favorite characters. I wonder how many players will devote time to reach the power of his country. I can honestly recommend this game to fans of strategy games. I can give this game 9/10.

Enjoyed creating stories of an upstart noble. Might have to read through the lines to see the stories unfold though.

Great game, I loved it. I'm a fan of the Total War games so this was unusual to begin with but after persevering and watch "Let's play"s on Youtube I got the hang of it. Loved the idea of being a family rather than a country!

Best Gameplay plan ever:

Start as a slavic or suomenusko
Don't get married
Go raid some irish and english counties, dukes or whatever
Hope you get a(or more) irish or norse good loking woman below 40 years as your prisoner
Take her as concubine
♥♥♥♥ her
Have your heir that looks like her not you

11/10 would raid and ♥♥♥♥ again (I still do it when i can)
