No Game Left Behind: Stardock Brings Update to GalCiv II!

The crew here at Stardock cares a lot about our community and the games that we produce for you.

That's why we're pleased to announce that version 2.20 for Galactic Civilizations II is available for you today!

Even when a title is "finished" and put out to market, there are always little things we find that could use a tweak or a change here and there. We also know what it's like to enjoy an old game so much that you keep going back to it, even when there are newer and "better" versions of it out there.

With help of some awesome community members, the Dev Team has taken all of the suggestions and implemented them into this update. You can find he entire change log (spoiler alert: it's long!) at the bottom of this post.

A few words from our CEO and President, Brad Wardell:"It was awesome being able to work with the fans to integrate years of their own mods and tweaks into the base game. They also gave me a long list of areas where they thought I could improve the AI, which I used to dig into the now 10 year old AI source code base to implement."

We hope you enjoy the update. We have an awesome community here at Stardock and are so very happy that you're a part of it. Have a great holiday season!

Special Thanks
To Antonio "Mabus" Invernizzi, Gaunathor, SilasOfBorg, Kamil "OShee" Bober, DARCA1213, Sam "MarvinKosh" Edwards. Steffem "Maiden666" Jenter, MarvinKosh, Leiavoia, Frogboy and everyone else who helped out!

Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords: Galactic Civilizations II is the sequel to 2003's hit turn-based strategy game of the same name. The player takes on the role of the leader of a space-faring civilization and must guide its expansion in a hostile galaxy. Gamers must balance their economic, technological, diplomatic, cultural, and military power to forge alliances, fight wars, and ultimately dominate the galaxy. The game is single-player and allows the player to play randomly generated galactic maps or play through a multi-mission campaign that tells the story of an ancient enemy called the Dread Lords.

Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar: The expansion pack for Stardock's award-winning hit strategy game, Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords. This expansion pack not only adds the usual content that expansion packs tend to do such as new opponents, new units and a new campaign. It also greatly expands the game play of Galactic Civilizations II. New features include asteroid belts on the map that can be mined for resources, unique planets that require special technologies to colonize, spies to conduct sabotage and destabilization (or used to protect your worlds from the same), new types of diplomatic treaties, an enhanced artificial intelligence engine, and much more!

Galactic Civilizations II: Twilight of the Arnor: The year is 2227 and the fire of war is consuming the galaxy thanks to the manipulations of the evil Dread Lords. But the remaining factions, led by the humans, have a plan to rid the galaxy of the Dread Lords once and for all.

Expand the Galactic Civilizations II universe with Terror Stars, unique technology trees per civilization, Map editors, Custom Scenario makers, campaign editors, new types of ships, new planetary improvements, and much more!

I absolutely love this game, but I can't play it because I bought a new computer and the DRM IS GARBAGE!! Please remove DRM!!! The game is crazy cheap and no one is pirating it.... I kind of want to now though. I probably will have to just to play A GAME THAT I PAID FOR!! This DRM trash needs to stop. It isn't clever and it doesn't stop piracy. It only harrasses people who buy games on steam. Most pirated games have their own way to launch idiots. None of them launch through steam.....

Really bad for of DRM that reminds of Rockstar Social Club or Games for Windows Live...
This game requires you to create a Stardock Account in order to connect to the game servers and be able to play the game. I am not the only one who can't create an account and therefore not play the game!

To all of you who are having trouble with the Game's RDM it's eazy to sort out if you follow these eazy steps

1) once you download the game and have installed it and you go to launch the game for the first time it will come up with you CD Key DO NOT close the window

2) Click the Copy to Clipboard button in the window that shows your CD Key

3) Create a Stardock Account using the E-Mail address you use for your Steam Account (You can use any other E-Mail address you own but I find it easier to remember) ((This will also alow you to redownload GC 2 if steam ever stops working))

4) When the Stardock Window opens asking for your User Name and Password just put in the E-Mail address (And Password) you used to create your Stardock Account

5) If for any reason your CD Key isn't on your clipboard reclick the Copy to Clipboard button in the window that shows your CD Key, then once you have done that copy your CD Key from your Clipboard to the space that is asking for the CD Key using the Control-V Shortcut Command

6) Click next, and the game will take about 5 minutes at most to regester the game for that computer (This can be done for other Computers as well)

7) Now that the game is regestered you can play...

At most this process should take about 15 minutes

Before Windows 8 and before GalCiv3 came out, this was a pretty epic.. singleplayer only game that seriously should have been re-worked for multiplayer.

But more to the point, it requires a massive amount of very tedius micromanagement.
your probably thinking.. oh that can be so bad...
Per.. Turn..
Oh crap.. Yea exactly.. and each game can literally go hundreds of turns before its conclusion.

But hey, its one of the VERY few games you can actually customize your own units to how you actually want them.

Would I recommend buying it? well sadly.. not anymore. Its unstability makes it very un-desirable to continue playing it, not to mention the complete lack of support for any other OS other then windows.

To be fair, if you asked me a few years ago when this title was newer, I'd have said yes, get it, its a glorious turn based strategy game.

My history with Gal Civ II is long. Origionally, I had the disk version before any of the add ons were introduced. I have not touched the disks in many, many years. One day while cleaning, I discovered them . So, after a little bit of googling, I discovered my version had none of the extended cotent the UE has.

I go to Stardock and contact support. Thankfully they ahve a live chatroom that made life easier. After explaining that I had a ancient copy , I wanted to know how to aquire the addon packs so I can get the full experience. to my displeasure, they informed me that they no longer sell the addons seperately. Also, I never made a Stardock account at this point because it was not even relevant or necesary for the physical version I had.

After I was asked to register what I had so the support agent could at lest know what I had, they decided to give me a steam key for the ultimate edition. they did this even though I was asking a way to pay and get the add ons.

Even though Stardock uses DRM n all, as long as your game is properly registered, you should have no issues whatsoever. I personally would recommend this game, even though Gal Civ III is out.
