What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“User generated content was planned to be a cornerstone of the success of Brickbuilder VR. We wanted to engage a community of players as soon as possible, so that we can hear your feedback and deliver the features that you want the most. Therefore, we chose to release the game under early access while we continue to polish the performance of the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We estimate about 1 year, but the timing is not set in stone. The game will be released in full when we consider that it has enough features and no major bugs.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to add the following features:

pistons / linear actuators: controllable like a motor, offers linear fixed or periodic motion
springs: Essentially a piston that is not driven
lights: realistic physical lights, and decorative lights. (Physical lights will be able to illuminate other objects, but will cost more performance. Decorative lights will be bright but static)
Sensors and graph programmability: A logic graph will allow reading sensors (touch, color and distance), performing logic and compute operations, and then outputting to motors, pistons and lights.
Script programmabiltiy: Specify more complicated behaviors by writing a script and importing it into the game.
Propellers and flying interactions: Quad copters, basically.
Magnetic joints: Enhanced playability, being able to easily connect and disconnect one structure to another. (Currently, disconnecting requires 2 hands pulling pieces away from each other)

We also plan to consider the following features, but may not be able to add them due to technical challenges:
Differential gearing;
Train / Rail type interactions;
Tracked vehicles;

We also plan to significantly improve the performance of the game to support creations of much larger scale. Our eventual goal is to support 10000 pieces.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We believe the game is fully playable, but there are currently issues and bugs.

Both "blueprint" and "create" modes are currently available. Blueprints provides a step-by-step instruction to build something that we have designed. The instruction is fully rendered in 3D, and can be moved, zoomed and rotated with your hands. Currently, the game includes 10 of these of varying complexity: "flower", "catapult", "tower", "crawler", "arm", "truck", "train", "farriswheel", "clock", and "gramophone".

Create allows you to build freely from a blank slate. The piece grid allows you to spawn any piece you want. Currently, the game supports the following types of pieces / connections: bricks, beams, axel, pins, motors, gears, wheels, and joints. You can paint your creation using the "painter" tool, and configure the motor with 4 separate channels and 2 axis from the thumbstick / touchpad of the VR controller.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. We will raise the price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will gather feedback and re-prioritize our development based on player feedback.”

About This Game

Brickbuilder VR is a high-fidelity VR model building simulator. With both decorative blocks and mechanical components such as axels, gears and motors, the game enables you to build a wide variety of interesting creations that move and interact with each other in the virtual world.

Brickbuilder VR features 2 primary modes of play: "blueprints", which lets you re-create structures that we have designed, and "freeform", which is building from a blank slate. At launch, Brickbuilder VR includes 10 blueprints. More will be added as we add more features and content to the game.

The game is also designed with extensions in mind: it will be possible to create a blueprint from an existing build directly from within the game. We will also release an official SDK, which will provide the functionality to create custom pieces, 3D models, and textures.

Brickbuilder VR is at an early stage of its development. In addition to performance improvements, UI-overhauls, and bug fixes, we plan to add the following features to the game in the future: pistons / linear actuators; lights; sensors and graph programmability; script programmability; propellers / flying interactions; magnetic joints; and many more. Your support will help us make these a reality.
