I played long before steam has kept records. After counltess hrs of play, I can confidently say this is an awesome concept with poor and unfinished programming. There were many great modders and community support for this game, I dont know if they are still out there. I do remember there was an unofficial patch that made a lot of corrections, helped get rid of bugs and eventually made the game playable. I think the name of the mod was "Germany Hannebu"

I believe the fault is in steam here, they should have had it overhauled before releasing it, just like numerous titles it had released this way (steam edition games)

So as a summary, dont buy it from Steam but if you can find it elsewhere grab it.

They havent patches the game, still 1.51 and not very stable. So if you try patching it from official site, you will run into problems that required cd to play. Either yes and no for recommend this game. Hopefully they will patch this soon!

If you only play for the strategy and auto-resolve every battle. This game works fine. However, if you want to watch the battles or participate in them, be aware this game will crash often and repeatedly causing a loss of all battle progress and possibly campaign time (depending on your last save).

Many solutions have been offered in the forums to correct this issue, but the fact that 20 solutions are offered for the same 1 problem should raise some eyebrows, because none of them work.

The 1.52 patch is not compatable with the steam version because the files are not where the patch launcher thinks they are, and it does not offer the ability to choose a different path. Some have suggested moving the files, but this causes steam to fail to launch. You can download as suggested an exe file to correct but then it will demand a cd key. (note no posted cd keys online are valid and the game will not accept them)

The SS mod which is recommended by some changes half your ingame language to russian. Even the mod authors argue with each other over who will translate dumping it on a 3rd party who apparently never did it. (forums at pacificstorm site) Also it assumes you allready have the 1.52 patch mentioned above. The alternate mod recommended is Rising Sun but the mod author himself has posted on his facebook page the NOT use his mod with the steam version since it also does not contain the fixes from 1.52.

Other recommendations are lowering graphics (cause thats all kinds of fun) but this is not a solution and assumes the issue is your pc mainly and not the game. Lowering the troop counts, this can get you through some battles that were allready smaller with regards to participants, but the larger battles will play over a greatly extended time period (wave after wave) and will still crash in the end. Additionally retreating all re-enforcements from the battle before ending it after achieving victory and landing all aircraft (huge time suck even at accelerated game speeds) have been suggested, but once again only seem to help in smaller battles not larger extended ones. The forums from the original site also recommended disabling all autosave functions. (just fyi)

Some members from the modding community have promised a 1.6 patch which includes gameplay improvements, graphics and skins improvements and "Oh yeah!!" fixes for the crashes. A community site has been setup and has even been gifted with a few screen shots. But it is not available at this time (which doesn't help you). Basically you will be purchasing a game with no guarantee the patch will fix these issues or that it will ever be completed. (Personally, I feel the mod authors seem motivated and believe they will eventually finish the patch, but I do not know them so it is really nothing more then perhaps my own personal wishful thinking)

I like this game as you can tell by the time I have spent playing it. Good pacific war games are hard to find. The AI may not be ready to take over the world and sure there is always room for improvement but its a good game. But until a better version is loaded to steam or a patch becomes available to solve the crashes, or like me me you choose to autoresolve everything, this game does nothing except take up room in your library.

I'm sorry but i cannot recommend this game.
The main reason is that it has more bugs than a outdoor lamp a summer day.

Saved games that get corrupted, crashes, no matter how often you save you will lose your entire campaign sooner or later.

There is no use playing a game that is impossible to finish.

I WANT to like this game, but all the bugs and crashes forces me to not recommend it.

Another strategy game I would have loved to like, but could not. Great promise, mediocre execution.

I.e. this covers the entire pacific war setup, on both tactical and strategic level, but unfortunately is riddled by rather mediocre visuals and certain bugs. You may still want to give it a try, if you like this type of wargame or are specifically interested in the pacific war setups. But you have to expect something unpolished, which may crash on you pretty frequently (for me this seemed related to the amount of units, which basically made it unplayable in the later phase). Also, the mix of tactical and strategic does not really work out - you may constantly win a battle on automatic, but lose it on the tactical, or vice versa, due to the way the participants for a tactical battle are selected from the strategic forces.

Depth: Detailed
Setting: Pacific War
Type: Strategic/Tactical
My Rating: 5 out of 10 (without the crashes/bugs might get 8 of 10).

Man... PTOII for SNES was one of my fav games of all time. THousands of hours on that one no doubt about it. When I picked this up, I was literally overblown with joy with what seemed to be nostalgia from those days. Bugs though, man oh man bugs. Maybe not even bugs but unfinished/poorly implemented concepts (like the battles. Not somethign about the battles, the battles as a whole. What a wreck) Many fantastic ideas, I loved the supply system in this game, the recruiting system, the ship and plane building system, and the base system. They should have focused on the strategy side as there is great promise there; in my personal opinion 1)The battles 2)The bugs and 3)The AI totally do this game in. A shame too, because it had some potential.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME.

At least if you value your sanity.

This could of been an amazing game, but frankly as it is, it is a waste of money. This game crashes so often it is not funny. I have had it crash when saving, crash when exiting a 40 minute battle so you lose all that work. There could of been a good game here, but the devolper released it in an awful state and then stopped patching it before it was fixed.

However if you can somehow crawl past the crashes and bugs you can have some fun.

In theory, this game had an amazing concept, but due to poor controls, and just all around bad excecution of the game, it is a terrible game, do not buy unless you like the idea so much you are willing to look past its flaws
