Elder Legacy: Survival - HonorGames

Hello everyone,

I’ve noticed quite a bit of negativity in the reviews — loud words about the game being a scam and so on. I’d like to try and explain the situation, and then it’s up to you to judge.

I have my main project, YAR. I’ve been developing it for three years now, every single day. It’s a single-player role-playing adventure in the spirit of the classic Gothic and The Witcher. Elder Rus: Survival was created by my friend Konstantin on the foundation of my game YAR. He wanted to try himself as a developer, and we decided to release the game in Early Access, to see how it would go and how the project might evolve. Whatever people say, Konstantin spent a year working on it, and he expected the project to at least pay off. He had many ideas for improving the balance, adding new biomes, and so on — it was all in the plans.

However, the game was released and failed. It didn’t even recoup a single month of development costs and time. Because of that, we decided to put it on hold until better times — which, most likely, may never come. We simply don’t have the resources to continue its development.

The real issue is that we only announced this on Discord, which many people don’t have access to, while we should have posted it on Steam half a year ago. Better late than never: now I’ve updated the store page to show that development has been paused, so as not to mislead people. Believe me, we never wanted to “scam” anyone — we’re just ordinary guys making games. It just didn’t work out. Sometimes things don’t “hit,” that’s life.

You can even contact Steam support, and they’ll tell you directly: Early Access games may never be finished. Steam itself warns developers when filling out the Early Access description — “Promise nothing, because you don’t know if the game will actually be completed.”

So I honestly don’t understand why people keep calling this a scam. The game costs about 300 rubles, and is often 70% off. There’s still a fair amount of content — enough for several evenings of fun. And most reviews are actually positive.

I hope you can understand the situation. But if not — I’ll accept it, because it’s not exactly black and white. Honestly, I myself didn’t expect it to turn out this way, since all of my focus is on the main game, which I really am making with full dedication. In fact, a very big update is currently in the works. As for Konstantin — he never really took it that seriously. For him, it was more of a hobby. At his main job, he earns more in two weeks than the game has earned in its entire lifetime. Just do the math: take the number of reviews, subtract Steam’s cut, refunds, taxes — that’s roughly half — and you’ll see there’s no way this could be about “scamming.” If you can make more in two weeks at your regular job, why spend a year “scamming” people for peanuts? That’s just not who we are.

Of course, the judgment is yours. People nowadays often don’t trust anyone or anything. But I’ve tried to explain things as they really are.

P.S. Here’s what Steam itself says about Early Access games, right on the store page below the trailers and screenshots:

“Note: Early Access games are still in development. They may change in the future or remain in their current state. If you’re not excited about what the game offers right now, we recommend waiting to see how it develops further.”

Steam explicitly allows developers to release a game into Early Access without ever bringing it to full release. You’ve been warned — and if someone didn’t read this, well, not knowing doesn’t remove the responsibility.

September Goals and Results

I exceeded my September goals—mainly because I was able to put in a lot more development time.

Immediate Goals
  • Post progress videos more regularly.

  • Create a proper trailer and update the store page video.

  • Refactor code to make it more robust.

  • Start Stage 6 and implement all basic elements.

  • Fix bugs up through Stage 5.

  • Keep tuning 2-Player mode.
