Hello!

Boring mandatory updates are behind, now we can focus on cool stuff:

  • Game is now much more pleasant to play on a gamepad and small screens (like Steam Deck).

  • Enemy highlight ability reworked and is using post-processing instead of widgets.

  • Squads now have three slots for abilities: Heavy, Drone, Tool.

  • Squad widget on HUD adjusted for better readability and to support abilities.

  • Aim assist feature for suppressing fire enabled by default.

  • Hotkey to reinforce selected squad added.

  • Onboarding "puzzle" on first level made easier.

  • Of course, more localization fixes and minor bug fixes.

Reworked enemy highlight

VEIL engineers improved enemy highlight system. Enemies are scanned with adjustable pulse.

This approach allows to have more gameplay around scanning ability without sacrificing required user guidance, and will help to play with fog of war in upcoming the multiplayer.

It also looks better, and this post processing shader is much more performance friendly than the previous widget based system.

Three types of abilities

Based on community request around inventory anbd loadouts, ability system had to be adjusted.

Abilities now have three interchangeable slots:

  • Heavy slot (rockets, artillery..)

  • Tool slot (Medkit and other upcoming items)

  • Drone slot

This new system allows to add these improvements in the upcoming updates:

  • Equip each squad with medkits or tools without sacrificing firepower.

  • Have a designated drone for each squad.

  • Increase combat variety in the upcoming multiplayer

Remember, your feedback matters, and game is gradually moving towards the originally raised topics.

Note: Because of this feature some input keys changed.

Drone control is now on \[ Tab ] and Toggle Drone Camera is on \[ 5 ].

Tool slot (Medkit) is \[ H ]. Heavy ability and Grenade stayed on \[ T ] and \[ G ].

Improved Squad Widget

Widget reworked to accomodate changes in the ability system.

Press \[ Shift ] or \[Left Trigger ] to see more commands.

Icons were made slightly bigger to be visible on the small screens.

Explicit icon for crouch is added, to allow for the better indication of the squad stance.

Note: there are gameplay nuances in the interplay between sprint and crouch orders, they can be used for your advantage in the combat.

Aim Assist enabled by default

Now for suppressive fire mode, your aim will be adjusted towards the enemy in the range.

This change is made to address the main pain-point in players (and my own, honestly) feedback - "The enemy was not killed when I was aiming at it."

This issue was even more prominent on the smaller screens like Steam Deck has.

Adding it makes sense, because when it comes to direct fire control your troops already know what they are shooting at, so there is no need for unnecessary limitations from the game.

Feature can be disabled in the game settings, but I highly recommend to give it a shot and check how positively it affects the gameplay.

Hotkey to reinforce squad

Was debating whether it had to be added, but it makes gameplay much smoother, especially on the gamepad.

The moral aspects of being able to replace your lost troops that easily will be left aside.

Remember our goal - zero combat losses.

Other fixes and improvements
  • Volume sliders made logarithmic. That allows the better control in the zone of low volume.

  • Onboarding "puzzle" on the first level is made easier.

  • Welcoming message on the main screen fonts were fixed for localization. (Sorry for that bug).

  • Minor UI issues here and there were fixed, whatever.

  • Game is fully playable on the gamepad.

What's next

Strategically, we move towards adding the first Skirmish map (including loadouts and more drones).

Tactically the closest goal is to make it into the "Great on Deck" category on Steam.

Bonus #2 - How to play on Steam Deck

Game is already playable on Steam Deck, and recent update makes the gameplay shine.

However, there are still some minor Main Menu issues with settings to overcome before I can start certification, but they are unrelated to the gameplay.

If you want to play on Deck before the official announce:

  1. Change to "forward_shading" beta branch

  2. Set Graphics settings to Lowest

  3. Set Resolution Scale to 75%

  4. Enjoy

Why I have decided to remove my products from Steam
Why I decided to publish on Steam

Steam offers a unique suite of tools to distribute games without worrying about the financial or technical aspects of shipping a game, plus a workshop where users can share their unique creations and achievements, artworks, screenshots shareable across the platform.
In my case, it has also offered me some publicity, i.e the possibility to have a community without advertising. I feel grateful.

Making games is not my job, however I have learnt immensely about software by shipping to thousands of users and it's been a pleasure to express my creativity and provide regular updates.

Lack of standards

Anyone can publish on Steam. This means tens of thousands of rubbish products appear every new year - and anyone who joins the platform is treated equally with them.

Historically, engines and asset stores already enabled many to create fake products. In the age of AI, no evidence remains that any effort went behind a new game.

Porn and unethical games

The most blatant example are the adult games actively promoted by the platform. Steam has stubbornly refused to remove games related to harm and incest until payment processors like Visa and Mastercard courageously stepped in and froze their accounts, despite having no financial interest to censor the platform. The UK government also courageously stepped with its Online Safety Act, encouraging them to restrict sensitive purchases behind a credit card, however Steam has chosen the rogue path and the same games continue to be distributed to minors through retail keys.

Steam is very clear that it now has no interest in ethics, effectively tainting its partners while it maintains its interest in its 30% share - nearly half of the money.

Why are ethics important? As long as humans have existed, we have lived in a world that has always been filled with violence, war, denying each's other rights, minorities rights, destruction of animals and the environment, including sexual violence, today promoting global leaders such as Tr*mp or Put*n or local ones who have also committed the same violence both in their public and private life. While God is the obvious remedy against the wicked, they sometimes sleep on the job and artists and the platforms not only have a right to say in what is right or wrong but also they show what they are worth when they do so or not.

Scammers

There is no oversight. This means:

  • Anyone can create a fake product and list it for $200.

  • Anyone can generate keys to create scams and generate unfair competition with Steam prices. In the case of Humble Bundle, it was used to support charity. In case of DailyIndieGame, G2A, Eneba, Kinguin, there is no legitimate use other than harming Steam and developers.

  • Anyone can update their game, replacing the files with a virus.

  • There is a Terms of Service covering some of these issues, but infringements are not monitored or punished even when done in plain sight.

A community has formed around these problems called Sentinels of the Store — a positive group of users who spend time reporting abusive or fraudulent listings. They’ve filed thousands of reports and flag issues diligently; unfortunately, the totality of those reports are ignored. \[[url="https://url=https://steamcommunity.com/groups/Sentinels_of_the_Store"]url=https://steamcommunity.com/groups/Sentinels_of_the_Store[/url]]Sentinels_of_the_Store\[/url]

Double standards

Steam locks features behind a Profile featured limited checkmark, which acts like a yellow badge for Jewish people—a mark that signals exclusion. This status is not possible for indie developers to obtain unless they pursue aggressive wealth and success. Steam has misrepresented the purpose of this feature—it does not prevent low-quality games from flooding the platform and getting vetted—but it can block legitimate developers from gaining trust and visibility, which in some cases is crucial for their survival.

For some vetted publishers, this status is granted historically and automatically to all their new games. This means that even a new and unsuccessful game, such as "Sex Adventures - GangBang Surprise", can receive this elevated status despite having achieved no recognition, success, or quality by any metric.

Fake popularity

While Steam highlights its expanding revenues and users, the platform is actually flooded with bots. Developers are routinely contacted not only by scammers and rogue key retailers but also by services offering reviews, wishlists, and simulated user activity. Games that get involved into these questionable third-party services tend to perform better—a practice that the platform inexplicably allows.

In a place where you can't distinguish the fake from the real, anyone could accuse you of anything and smash a tomato in your face - imagine you also happen to have family and friends watching and worrying about what other people are doing to you - that's not a good place to be, right?

Future actions

I will continue to be a user on Steam for the charity and sales events, but I am no longer interested in selling software here unless significant changes are made. Perhaps publishing free software on Steam could be the answer.
