Stardock Entertainment announced that its remaster of the Elemental fantasy strategy game series, Elemental: Reforged, entered Early Access today. The classic sandbox turn-based 4X game series puts the player in the role of a sovereign of a fledgling kingdom in a world that has been devastated by a war of magic.

Elemental: Reforged is the culmination of the vision Stardock had for this series since we started work on it over 15 years ago,” said Bradley Wardell, CEO of Stardock and designer of Elemental: Reforged. “The design of the game was ahead of its time, but limited by PC consumer hardware of the late 2000s. Now with a 64-bit engine, updated graphical fidelity, and a combination of features from all previous releases in the Elemental series, Reforged is exactly what we hoped the original game would be.”

Today’s Early Access Build is designed to showcase the new combined game and give players the opportunity to give feedback on which parts of the game they want Stardock to further develop and enhance.

The original game’s release, Elemental: War of Magic, was limited by the constraints of 32-bit technology, which unfortunately wasn’t able to execute the game’s ambitious mechanics and design in the way Stardock planned. Now with Elemental: Reforged, modern computer hardware is fully capable of delivering the fully realized vision of the series in a package that includes content from all three previous Elemental games.

As a result of the technical limitations of the day, Elemental was released as War of Magic, Fallen Enchantress and Sorcerer King, each with its own subset of the original design.

The single integrated game, Elemental: Reforged, blends the best of all three games with Dynasties, Unit Design and Crafting by moving to a 64-bit game engine and a modern version of DirectX.

  • Aging horses now experience monthly stat decline after age 6, with accelerating decline as they get older (max stats/genetic potential remain intact)

  • Horse ability and potential stars now display with knowledge-based uncertainty - lower knowledge shows less accurate star ratings

IMPORTANT: Unlike last week, the rewards won’t be sent to your in-game stash as soon as the goal is completed. Instead, they will be distributed at the end of the challenge.

A few Changes to Queueing, Matchmaking, and MMR & SP!

A few changes have happened to queueing, matchmaking, and MMR & SP, to improve player experience. Some of these have already gone in effect, some are new:

  • Added rank disparity lock for Competitive (Diamond players and up will only be able to queue with others within a one rank difference)

  • No longer will people be able to see player names of the enemy team ahead of the match by pressing the Oculus report button

  • We’ve made SP correction more gradual, which should result in less extreme cases

  • MMR Volatility will be clamped to keep MMR moving a bit more still toward end of season

  • Squad SP weights have changed slightly.

  • Read part 1 for the overview, ways of obtaining the gadgets, and the main usage mechanics.

Balance and limits

We deliberately limit players to one gadget at a time. This decision is driven by several reasons:

  • Balance – unlimited gadget use without cooldowns would give players a significant advantage (e.g., a “grasshopper” constantly using rocket boots or stacking barricades would be near unstoppable).

  • Specialization – each team member should fulfill their role rather than be a universal soldier. The developers want players to interact more and assist each other. This improves teamwork efficiency in both PvP and PvE battles.

  • Preventing overpowering combos – some gadget combinations in the hands of a single player could disrupt the game’s dynamics. Our motto is “One gadget per player!”

In the future, gadgets may be split into “lethal” and “support” categories, allowing players to take one of each type. While this idea is still under discussion, we look forward to further tests and your feedback on gadgets, which will help the dev team test their hypotheses.

The future of gadgets in NCORE

Overall, we’re satisfied with the current variety but don’t plan to stop there. Future updates may introduce new gadgets, alternative mechanics, and other changes. The developers intend to rely on player feedback and statistical data from playtests.

Gadgets in NCORE aren’t just auxiliary tools — they are a full-fledged part of tactical gameplay. Their variety, mechanics, and balance create dynamic and intense battles where every player can find their style and develop strategies. Given future plans, the NCORE arsenal will only expand, making the game even deeper and more engaging.
