It's that oh so wonderful time of the year and Raw Fury is feeling particularly festive. For Rawcember 2020 we've got tons and tons of hotness for you including game announcements, game launches and deals on all your future favourite games! Keep your eyes on the Raw Fury social accounts for updates but here's a few things to kick it off!
Call of the Sea is a story that takes place in the South Pacific, and although we have many elements of fantasy, we wanted to display it as faithful as possible. Also, we wanted to study their culture to portrait it in the most respectful way. That is why we contacted the Ia Ora Tahiti International School. Their goal is to teach and promote everything related to Polynesian culture, and their director Yunick Vaimatapako has been helping us as a consultant.
We are very lucky that the students of Ia Ora Tahiti, inspired by the song composed by Eduardo de la Iglesia for the game Call of the Sea, decided to perform an Aparima. A slow dance where the story is told by the movements of the hands. We hope you love it as much as we do!
Last week we did our first stream showing off gameplay on PC as well as announcing the release date (Dec. 8, 2020) and I am just popping the recording of the stream here, in case any of you missed it!
Please take this post as your invite to a very special stream! Our wonderful Voice Actors, Cissy Jones who is playing Norah and Yuri Lowenthal who is playing Norah's husband Harry will be performing the prequel story live here on the Call of the Sea store page and on the Raw Fury Twitch channel.
This will be happening on November 30 at 18:00 CET/ 09:00 PST
You may know Cissy Jones from her amazing performance as Delilah in Firewatch, as well as her performances in both games and animation such as The Walking Dead, Death Stranding, The Owl House and so much more!
You may know Yuri Lowenthal from his also amazing performance as Spider-Man/Peter Parker in Sony's Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, as well as his performances in both games and animation such as Spider-Man TV Series, Batman Unlimited, Ben-10 and not forgetting him as the Prince in Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.
They have both done so many cool things it is worth looking up their IMDBs.
Anyways, this is going to be really fun and really unique - so we hope you will join us!
This week we delve into Harry’s reply to Norah - he is getting nearer to setting sail, but I will let you read what is going on. And remember, keep an eye out for clues, as you never know what will come in handy.
From Harry: Providence
September 1, 1933
Dear Norah:
It has always seemed to me that there is something disturbing in this city. I find it hard to explain what it is, but despite how weird this place feels sometimes, I also think it would be the perfect place for a crank like me. I could spend hours in the Providence Athenaeum. It’s a shame that this city has this terrible weather.
The journalist arranged a meeting with the president of The Starry Wisdom Society, a certain Caleb Bowen. These people pretend to be an astronomical society, but I recognize the stench of an occultist circle for miles. I don’t know if I ever told you this, but when I was a child, Everhart Manor was full of mediums, psychics, fortune tellers and all sorts of nutjobs. Mother was into all that supernatural crap for years and held a seance almost weekly. Fortunately, Father put an end to that nonsense when he found out. One of the few good things he did for our family.
I wouldn’t have a problem with these people’s mystic-kook talk (other than the waste of time) if it wasn’t for the fact that they season their supernatural baloney with a nice dose of eugenics and race supremacism. Some of the things that Bowen fella said sounded straight out of a Hitler speech. I find them abhorrent.
They offered to finance the expedition, but of course, I declined. I don't see myself leading the looney crusade for a bunch of nazi sympathizers. I have enough already travelling with Madam Mystery the Journalist and Doctor Jekyll (I still have to decide what kind of freak I am).
The only good thing I got from that meeting was that I acquired a very peculiar piece of equipment. It’s a strange optical machine, made by a scientist named Tillinghast, apparently, for some sort of glasses he intended to market. It didn’t go well, apparently. The guy died (poor as a church mouse, I think) and he never managed to sell his doohickey. Although the machine was broken, it was so dirt-cheap that it piqued my interest. When I return to Englewood, maybe we can mess around with it and see if we can make it work. Sounds like a fun evening plan, right?
Anyway, the journalist doesn’t seem to be too worried about getting funding for the expedition. She says we’ll find a way. I have a hunch with the next meeting that I have tomorrow. So if everything goes as planned, San Francisco should be our next stop before setting sail to the Pacific.
Here is another instalment in our prequel story. Part Four is a letter from Norah to Harry. As always, be sure to keep an eye out for clues, as they may come in handy when you play the game (which if you hadn't heard, is coming out on December 8th!).
We will share more news tomorrow as we will be announcing who plays Harry (Norah's missing husband).
Anyways, onto part four...
From Norah: Boston
July 20, 1933
Dear Harry:
I still feel really bad about what you had to go through with your parents. You know I’ve never meddled in the disputes between you and them, mostly because you know that I rather keep my mouth shut if I don’t have anything nice to say of someone. I know they’ll never accept that you married a middle-class girl, and I almost grow accustomed to it. What I will never be accustomed to, is that they don’t care about the well-being of their son.
You always say the main reason why you don’t want children is that you thought you'd be a terrible father, like yours. But let me tell you something, Harry: you’re nothing like John Washington Everhart. Not even a little bit. And if it makes you feel better, I think you would make a wonderful father. (Don’t panic, I haven’t changed my mind about having kids, I'm still terrified of passing this disease on to my children).
Anyway, let’s just move on, my love.
So the journalist is a woman? What a surprise! I don’t know why, but when you mentioned that a journalist wanted to have a meeting with you, I immediately assumed she was a man. That’s how society works, I guess. Remember that there were only four girls in your class year in Law? Arts had a little more women, but most students at Boston University were men. Honestly, I hope that changes one day, and we won’t find it strange that women can do as many relevant things as men.
I wonder how she knew you were back in the city. I guess that the return of an Everhart family member to Boston must be hot news not only for the high society of the city but for all the gossip press. But you say she is not into gossip, right? She is an investigative journalist at the Boston Herald. And she not only knew about the Newburyport tiara, but she covered it when the exposition came to Boston? What a coincidence! Never heard of those other news items that she mentioned to you though. I think I remember reading something about a riot in Innsmouth a few years ago, but... the FBI raiding a fishing village? That sounds like tabloid news to me, Harry!
Anyway, she definitely looks resourceful. And who knows? Maybe the money that your parents refused to give you can be obtained through that society that she’s talking about. And if that doesn’t work, I’m sure there’ll be another way.
We are so happy to announce that Call of the Sea will release on Dec. 8 2020!
We really can't wait for you to get your hands on the game and play it. We hope you love it as much as we do.
In other news this week (if this wasn't enough), tomorrow we will be releasing another part of the prequel story and on Thursday, we will be revealing who the actor is that plays Harry (spoiler, he is pretty awesome!).
Anyways, below is our shiny new trailer - we hope you enjoy it!
The music is an integral part to Call of the Sea, so we sat down for a chat with our wonderful composer Eduardo de la Iglesia and asked him to tell us more about it.
Tell us about the music for Call of the Sea? The music of “Call of the Sea” is a love story. There are two melodies that evoke the two main characters of the story (Norah and Harry). About these two melodies (that repeat along the entire soundtrack) I want to say that they are the same melody. Norah´s theme was the first I composed, and about Harry´s theme, I thought “How can I make something similar, but connected with Norah´s melody? The answer to this question was the use of the musical technique: “Negative Melody”. This one consists of taking all the notes of one theme and, starting with the first same note, and composing in the opposite way. So if the second note of Norah's theme downs five semitones in Harry´s theme, with the negative melody, those five semitones go up. And so on. This is the way (I think) to connect with music the souls of Norah and Harry.
But the soundtrack of Call of the Sea not only has emotive themes. There are passages with adventure, darkness, suspense... with orchestra (string orchestra mainly) and beautiful solo instruments like the violin, cello, harp, flute, oboe and voice.
Highlight the songs “Te Reo O Te R´ai” and “Dear old pal of mine”. The first one was my first Tahitian song performed masterfully by my father Angel de la Iglesia and lyrics by Tatiana Delgado. And the second one is a piano version of the John McCormack homonymous theme performed by Cissy Jones and a yet to announced actor (who will soon be revealed), the same actors that voice Norah and Harry.
And of course, I need to talk of the inspiration… and what better inspiration to compose an entire soundtrack about love than being in love. All the tracks (except the darkest ones…well….maybe) have been inspired by my wife Esther, and of course the incredible history and art of the game.
What drew you to the game and made you want to work on it? After working with Tatiana Delgado and Manuel Fernández-Truchaud in the VR game “Red Matter” (Vertical Robot) they asked me if I was interested in making the music and sound of a new adventure game inspired in the Lovecraft world, and of course, I answered “Yes!” with no doubt. Working with them in Red Matter was a pleasure, so I accepted with my eyes closed.
And of course, I was delighted to work with such a great team like Out of the Blue. They are very talented people with many years in the videogame industry. For me, that is more than enough.
What inspires you as a composer? Well, it depends on the kind of music I need to compose, but in general, everything inspires me as a composer. All my life experiences influence me when composing, whether I'm listening to music, reading a book, walking by the street… When I wake up I'm humming all the time and sometimes I have a melody in my head that I need to record on my phone before I´ll forget it. In video games, the story, concepts art, talking with designers...all that kind of interaction with creative people is an interesting source of inspiration.
Tell us about yourself and your work? Since I was very young (10 or 11 years old) I had in my mind to be a music composer for video games, and look at me, I've been composing music for video games for more than 20 years. I started my videogames career in the Production department in “Commandos 2: Men of courage” for consoles (Pyro Studios). I didn't make any music or sound (except for the credits of the console version) but it gave me a great overview of how it works for a video game team. But my first opportunity with music and sound was with the game “The Lord of the Creatures” (Arvirago Gamecraft). Unfortunately, the game did not end due to poor management by the project manager but I learnt a lot about sound and music for games. That experience gave me the opportunity to meet people in the videogames industry that needed audio work at that moment and since then I’ve composed music and (or) designed the sound for games like “Red Matter” & “Daedalus” (Vertical Robot), “Gylt” (Tequila Works), “Young Justice Legacy” & “Kick Ass 2” (Freedom Factory), “The Respawnables”, “Respawnables Heroes” & “Afterpulse” (Digital Legends Entertainment), “Yesterday Origins” (Pendulo Studios), ...and around 45 more titles in companies like Pyro Studios, Stage Clear Studios, Bee Square, Xaloc Studios….etc. You can know more about me in www.eduardodelaiglesia.com/wp and www.soundcloud.com/duba
Tell us about the track you are sharing today? This theme is the essence of the soundtrack. Here you can feel the mood that you’re going to listen to in the entire “Call of the Sea” Soundtrack, with different ambiences like mystery, adventure, love…
You’ll listen to a beautiful motif that frequently appears throughout the entire soundtrack added to Norah and Harry´s theme to remind us of the love story that is behind the game “Call of the Sea”
