What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I want to work on this project long term, adding as many levels as I can. Early access will allow people to be able to get their hands on the game as it's being developed and offer suggestions and feedback to ensure a quality product. Profits from the Early Access sales get invested back into the project.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I plan for this game to remain in Early Access until 2025, as I regularly update the project with new levels and content. I may continue developing the game after it is out of Early Access.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I plan to achieve a functional survival horror game set in the world of 'The Backrooms'.
I'm planning three complete level progression paths; positive levels, negative levels and letter levels.
I plan for some levels to include sub-levels.
I'm planning for there to be at least 20 different levels to explore and progress through.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is in Beta and includes:
  • Level 0 - 6 Maps
  • The Poolrooms - 3 maps.
  • Kyoto Dreams
  • Level Fun
  • Level 0.2 Remodeled Mess
  • Level -1 Glitched Halls
  • Level -1.1 Inverted Doorways
  • Level 1.3 Jerry's Room

You can walk in any direction for an infinite amount of time.
There are items for you to pick up and there is an inventory system.
You can hold equipment like your torch or weapons like the pistol. Equipment requires things like batteries or ammo.
You must keep yourself alive by staying on top of your Health, Hunger, Thirst and Sanity stats and by avoiding entity encounters.
You can swim underwater but stay for too long and you'll drown.
Vending machines can provide you with items for sustenance. Each item has its own unique effect.
There is a VR mode for the game, but it currently only works with certain headsets.

Currently the game's options menu is a work in progress and there will be general quality of life improvements that will come with future releases. The game receives monthly updates unless the update is particularly large, in which case it may take 2 months.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will not increase above its current price.
There were previous periods of a lowered pricing while the game was being developed to build up a bigger audience.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community feedback is greatly appreciated. Bug reports are greatly appreciated.”

About This Game

This game uses Unreal Engine 5; avoid running on outdated hardware.

(Some VR headsets might have compatibility issues. I don't own all of the headsets yet to test with.)
Currently Tested Headsets:
• Oculus Rift
• Meta Quest 2

////If you are using the Quest you should go into your Oculus app and change your OpenXR settings to the Oculus one. Unreal Engine did a bug in the new game engine update and now you have to change that setting or it glitches the headset display.////

If you're not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you'll end up in the Backrooms. The old moist carpet, the mono-yellow rooms and the hum-buzz of the fluorescent lights will be your only comfort in the endless purgatory you have found yourself in. Don't bother crying out for help. Nobody is coming. Nobody is left.

The Backrooms: Mass Extinction is a game created by Mitchell Hepburn using Unreal Engine 5. The game is in development and will receive updates with new content, fixes and improvements. The Beta version of the game released recently. In the current build, you can:
• Explore a massive Level 0, a maze of non-Euclidean rooms stretching infinitely in all directions.
• Explore Level 0.2, a sub-level called 'Remodeled Mess'.
• Explore Level A, the Poolrooms!
• Explore Level 0.3, Level Fun, home to the Partygoers!
• Use vending machines to avoid dying of hunger or thirst.
• Collect items such as Almond Water.
• Use your trusty torch to light areas shrouded in darkness, but make sure you have enough batteries!
• Search for the Manila room, which can be found behind a wall you can noclip through.
• Discover books documenting the levels.
• Play on Desktop or VR; seamlessly switch between regular and VR play modes!
• Interact with the Poolrooms water in VR and regular play modes!
• Splash the water with your VR controller!
• Collect items in your inventory system.
• Find hidden weapons to use against entities.
• Three current entity types: Partygoers, Smilers and Hazmat entity
• Options to disable entities if you'd rather play without them.
• Options to play with guns to defend yourself.
• Difficulty options.

Level 0 (The Lobby)
Level 0 is the first level of the Backrooms.
Level 0 is a non-linear space, resembling the backrooms of a retail outlet. It is a collection of infinite randomly segmented rooms, hallways, and staircases. The wallpaper is a mono-yellow, the carpet is damp, and the ceiling is decorated with office lights. Some walls have electrical outlets, security cameras, or mold growing on them.
The installed lighting flickers inconsistently and hums at a constant frequency.
While most areas of Level 0 are lit with a mono-yellow light, some areas are in total darkness. Other areas have dimmer than usual lights and some areas even have colorful lighting.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

In future builds, there will be occasional bodies and the use of guns.
