have dropped anchor on another monthly update but this one’s a bit unlike the rest as it includes the news that updates won’t exactly be monthly in the future. Beginning in January 2021, Sea Of Thieves will switch to quarterly seasonal updates and it’s also getting its very own battle pass and new seasonal progression systems.

We tend to talk about games as very visual experiences because, for most, they are. But, for some, there are more important things than framerates and 4K resolutions – namely, actually being able to play games in the first place. I spoke to Sightless Kombat, an accessibility consultant and “gamer without sight”, who told me how far games still have to come before they’re fully accessible for players like him.

So, how on earth does someone with no sight play games? The answer is a lot less complicated than you might think.

This year’s Fate Of The Damned event will send you on voyages to discover what happened to some missing Bilge Rat crews. Eerie shadow skeletons will be standing in your way on these adventures, however – it is the spooky season, after all.

How can someone steer a ship in Sea Of Thieves when they’re unable to see? Quite well, as it turns out. “Sightless Kombat” is an accessibility consultant and streamer who, as you might guess by the name, is without sight. Last night, he joined the Rare crew on their weekly stream to shoot some skeletons, chat about accessibility and show how he plays the game using cues from his crewmates – including following the sounds of their hurdy gurdy tunes to find his way around.

Eddie Van Halen, song writer and lead guitarist of iconic rock band Van Halen, passed away this week. Across the internet, tributes have poured out for the legendary rocker, including a rather surprising one from Sea Of Thieves developer, Rare. They’ve made a pirate shanty cover of the song Jump. It’s a bit weird, but you know what? It’s really sweet, too.

It’s Talk Like A Pirate Day on Saturday, so naturally, Rare’s excellent pirate adventure Sea Of Thieves has some goodies in store for its players. The first of which is a free ship set inspired by Ori And The Blind Forest (or Will Of The Wisps, I suppose). And the second is a whole weekend of double gold and reputation rewards between today and Sunday the 20th of September.

Today, I dived into Sea Of Thieves with a single goal in mind: buy and hang out with a dog. Rare’s pirate sandbox got its big September update yesterday, introducing some new canine pals to the game’s premium store, and what can I say? I love pets, and I love pirates. This game just gets me. So, I’d like you all to meet Rox, and come with us on our very first adventure out on the Sea Of Thieves to go for a walkies on a nice sunny island.

Indiana Jones movies sure would be different if the owners of the treasure he uncovered had asked him to pop on down and fetch it for them. That’s what the newest Sea Of Thieves monthly update will have you doing starting today. New Gold Hoarder voyages ask you and your crew to go fetch the gold and goodies stashed by the Hoarders in hidden vaults. I suppose they’re just too busy to go dig ’em up themselves, are they? More gold for me, then. If you’d missed it, this is also the update that adds dogs as a new type of pirate pet.

The next big Sea Of Thieves update is right around the corner, bringing new four-legged friends, new gold hoarders missions, and loads more good stuff on September 9th. It’s called The Vault Of The Ancients, and, as you may guess from the name, it’s introducing new quests to explore treasure-filled vaults throughout the seas. You’ll be able to uncover these with an excellent dog in tow, and there are some new accessibility and quality-of-life changes coming as well.
