A set of senior developers have left Borderlands studio Gearbox.

Several of the group, including senior producer Christopher Brock, lead mission designer Keith Schuler and art director Scott Kester, had all been with Gearbox for more than a decade, Axios reported.

Creative director Paul Sage, UX/Game Feel director Chris Strasz and lead character artist Kevin Penrod have also departed. All are intending to work together on a new indie project.

Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford has said PlayStation cross-platform support has been cut from an upcoming Borderlands 3 patch - though without explaining why.

In a tweet sent this afternoon, Pitchford said that while a Borderlands 3 update had been prepared for release "that includes full crossplay support across all platforms", PlayStation will ultimately not be included.

Pitchford did not detail why, upon submitting the patch for certification, Gearbox was then forced to remove crossplay by the game's publisher 2K. Did Sony suddenly decide to take issue with the game's long-promised crossplay becoming a reality? Or did Gearbox and/or 2K decide not to play by Sony's rules? Pitchford has so far chosen not to elaborate.

Director Eli Roth's Borderlands movie adaptation continues to pick up the pace with today's news that yet another big name has joined the cast, this time in the form of Jack Black, who'll play the Borderlands series' irrepressible robot Claptrap.

That's according to The Hollywood Reporter, which quotes Roth - who previously directed Black on the movie The House with a Clock in its Walls - as saying, "I am so excited to reunite with Jack, this time in the recording booth. Claptrap is the funniest character in the game, and Jack is perfect to bring him to the big screen".

Black joins an already star-studded cast for the movie adaptation of Gearbox's much-loved comedic FPS, and will perform alongside the likes of Jamie Lee Curtis, Jumani star Kevin Hart, and Cate Blanchett (another The House with a Clock in its Walls alumni).

Gearbox's Borderlands movie continues to hoover up an improbable roster of Hollywood talent, this time with the news that Jamie Lee Curtis has officially signed on to star in a key role.

A film adaptation of Gearbox's popular post-apocalyptic comedy shooter was first floated all the way back in 2015, but it wasn't until last year that the cogs started turning in earnest - with the surprise announcement that Hostel director Eli Roth would be at the helm.

More unexpected still was the news, arriving last May, that Oscar winner Cate Blanchett (who starred in Roth's 2018 adaptation of The House with a Clock in its Walls) would be taking a leading role in the Borderlands movie as Lilith, described as a "siren and legendary thief equipped with magical skills".

UPDATE 1.30pm UK: 2K will continue to publish unannounced but inevitable future entries in Gearbox's Borderlands series, it has said, even though the developer is now part of Embracer.

"As the proud publisher of the Borderlands franchise, we are happy for our partners at Gearbox and this exciting new chapter for their organisation," the company said. "The merger does not change 2K's relationship with Gearbox nor our role as the publisher for the Borderlands IP or any other projects we are currently working on with the studio. We look forward to continuing our long-term partnership with this incredibly talented team and delivering many more exciting entertainment experiences to gaming fans around the world."

ORIGINAL STORY 11.15am UK: Borderlands developer Gearbox has become the latest studio to be bought by Embracer, the enormous umbrella company which in turn owns THQ Nordic, Koch Media and Saber Interactive.

A little over a month after releasing the final instalment in Borderlands 3's four-part season pass, developer Gearbox has announced it's preparing to launch a second one, this time promising an additional two updates for the exuberant first-person shooter.

Gearbox says Borderlands 3's imaginatively titled Season Pass 2, which will be available to purchase when it launches on 10th November, is "unlike anything we've done before".

Indeed, rather than following the route of its predecessor by delivering substantial new story campaigns, Season Pass 2's first half will introduce a so-called Designer's Cut, consisting of an additional Skill Tree for each Vault Hunter, alongside a new game mode known as Arms Race.

Borderlands 3 is coming to both the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5 with some cool new features, Gearbox announced during PAX Online tonight.

First up, the looter shooter has a free next-gen upgrade that applies to all content you've bought, as well as your saves. Basically, you carry everything over to the next-gen.

Borderlands 3 runs at 60 frames per second and in 4K resolution on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 in single-player, Gearbox stressed. The next-gen versions also include two local co-op features, free for all players: four-player split-screen, and the option to divide the screen horizontally or vertically in two-player co-op. Here's how four-player split-screen looks:

Gearbox has shared first details of Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck, Borderlands 3's fourth and final paid DLC campaign, ahead of its release on 10th September.

According to Gearbox's latest blog post, Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck (which I'm just going to called Psycho Krieg from now on, because I haven't got all day) is a "savage and surreal journey into madness", which takes its lead from "brilliant" scientist Patricia Tannis.

Long story short, Tannis' research into the mysterious force responsible for the erratic behaviour of Borderlands 3's psychos guides her to Vaulthalla, a "mythical place that induces insanity in all who learn its true nature". In order to unlock its secrets, Tannis elects to beam you and your fellow Vault Hunters into the brain of the titular Krieg.
