A lot of people have a lot of complaints about Assassin's Creed Unity, but those of former French governmental minister Jean-Luc M lenchon are unique: He's unhappy with the game because it paints a very unflattering portrait of the French Revolution. It's not meant to be a historically accurate game, of course, but M lenchon told France Inter radio that it feeds on anti-Republican sentiment that's behind the rise of far-right movements in the country today.
"It is propaganda against the people, the people who are [portrayed as] barbarians, bloodthirsty savages. In 1789 there were the poor aristocrats, and they are presented as fine upstanding people," he said, as reported by the Telegraph. He described Marie Antoinette as a "cretin, who is celebrated as a poor little rich girl," and complained that "the man who was our liberator at a certain moment of the Revolution—because the Revolution lasted a long time—Robespierre, is presented as a monster."
Assassin's Creed Unity "presents an image of hatred of the Revolution, hatred of the people, hatred of the Republic which is rampant in the far-right milieu [of today]," he concluded.
M lenchon served as France's Minister of Vocational Education from 2000 to 2002 and also ran in the 2012 Presidential election, earning 11 percent of the vote. He is currently the leader of the Left Front political party, and holds a seat in the European Parliament. Ubisoft, meanwhile, has more practical concerns to deal with: It's currently working on the third patch for the game, which was only released last week, to try to iron out the worst of the technical problems plaguing it.
I was disappointed to learn that Elite: Dangerous won't support offline play, both as a matter of principle and practicality: My rural lifestyle has gifted me with internet access that's slow on good days, and non-existent on bad ones. But Frontier Developments founder David Braben said the single-player mode will work fine even on a wonky connection, and the studio has a contingency plan for the day the servers are taken down.
Elite: Dangerous will still offer a single-player mode, Braben recently clarified, just one that requires a constant connection to the net. "As we have developed the game and released Alpha and Beta versions, the work needed to deliver a rich online nature of the game diverged from the requirements of a fully offline game. In retrospect we should have shared the fact that we were struggling with this aspect with the community, but we were still trying to find a solution," he explained.
"As features were implemented, for the best results we chose to prioritize delivery of the online single and multiplayer experiences, with a view to providing the offline version later in development. We had to make a decision for the good of the game, and that is what we did."
The reaction to the decision was stronger than the studio expected, he said, since there's been little discussion about offline play until now, and the game has thus far been deployed entirely online. But he also noted that the single-player mode doesn't put a great strain on a connection, saying that he's played the game on a train, using his laptop tethered to his phone.
As for concerns that it will be unplayable if and when the servers are shut down, Braben said in a forum Q&A that Frontier plans to archive the state of the game "from time to time," and will release the archive if they're ever taken offline.
Elite: Dangerous comes out on December 16.
We already know that the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V will be playable from a first-person perspective. What we didn't know, or at least hadn't actually considered until now, is that that means players will also be able to experience first-person sex scenes.
It seems obvious in hindsight—the entire game is, after all, now playable in first-person—but even so, the gameplay footage floating around on YouTube (via Esquire) is bound to raise eyebrows. It is, of course, extremely NSFW, so bear caution before you click: It's not visually graphic, although it's certainly beyond what we're used to from, say, BioWare's sex scenes. The audio is certainly explicit.
The scenes have obvious echoes of the Hot Coffee mod, that saw a minigame otherwise buried in the code brought back to life in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Things have obviously changed quite a bit in the past ten years, but there's still a reasonable chance controversy will now ensue. It's unlikely to change the game's ESRB rating, however, as it is already flagged for, among other things, "strong sexual content."
Grand Theft Auto V for the PC comes out on January 27, 2015. We'll presumably find out whether the sky falls shortly thereafter.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is a game about decisions, and arguably the toughest is also the first: who are you? Your Inquisitor can be any of two genders, four species, three classes, and a multitude of colours, shapes and sizes. So who will you make?
No, really, we're genuinely asking. We'd like you to show us screenshots of your Inquisitor, fresh out of character creation.
As an illustrative example, here is what happens when you turn up all of the game's face sliders to maximum:
Imagine that face heading charging across battlefields at the head of the Inquisition.
Yours, I suspect, will be slightly more appealing. Show us, by uploading them to an image service and popping a link in the comments. We'll round up our favourites at a later date, putting them on permanent display in a community gallery.
To be clear, that isn't what my actual Inquisitor looked like. This is:
And now over to you...
Far Cry 4 is out today. We've only just received review code, so you ll have to wait a while for our verdict. But I did find some time to see how the PC version handles. We ll have a full review soon, but in the meantime, here are some early impressions.
After the bug-ridden Assassin s Creed Unity, a lot of you were probably bracing yourself for similar woes with Far Cry 4. But I m semi-happy to report that the problems of revolutionary Paris do not extend to the mountains of Kyrat. On Nvidia machines this seems to be a solid PC release, but AMD owners might not be so lucky.
On a GTX 970 with 16GB of RAM and an i5 clocked at 3.4GHz I get a steady 60fps on ultra settings at 1080p. There s an option above ultra, called Nvidia , but even with a card as new as the 970 this drops me to around 30fps, so I ve been sticking to ultra.
Sam tested the game on his much older Radeon HD 7870 with 16GB of RAM and an AMD FX-6200 clocked at 3.8GHz, and the game ran at between 30-40fps on high settings at 1080p, but with occasional stuttering. At one point I blew up some barrels during a vehicle sequence and it paused for about a second, which is concerning.
This could be an issue specific to Sam s PC, but I won t know until I ve tested it on a few other AMD machines. If you couldn t wait and you ve already bought the game, leave a comment with your specs and tell us how it s running for you. I ve seen a few people on Twitter say they re having the same problem with AMD GPUs, and this extensive benchmark by Gamers Nexus has reported similar findings.
As for the graphics options on offer, they re pretty extensive. You can adjust fine details like animal fur, vegetation, water, and god rays, as well as things like triple buffering, shadows, textures, geometry complexity, and FOV. You re given a lot of control over the game s visuals, which will be useful for people with older cards.
I m not very far into the game itself, but Kyrat is a beautiful place. The fog-shrouded mountains on the horizon and muted colour palette give it a very different feel to the Rook Islands. There s a lot more verticality, and standing on the edge of a cliff gazing down into a deep, yawning valley made it feel absolutely huge.
The grapple is a new tool, letting you clamber up cliffs and swing across gaps. You can only attach it to set points defined by the game, but they re everywhere. Anyone who played Far Cry 3 will feel instantly at home. You re given a bow early on to hunt a pack of wolves, and new hero Ajay is similarly good at healing himself on the fly.
But one of the biggest improvements for me is the story. I hated Jason Brody and all of his hooting jock friends, which really dampened the narrative elements of the game for me. I just didn t want to save them. But Ajay is instantly more likeable, and charismatic new villain Pagan Min makes an unforgettable first impression.
So far I ve spent most of my time taking photos of monkeys—the in-game camera now has an option to hide the HUD, which will please virtual photographers—but I ll be getting stuck into the game properly in the next couple of days, with a review to follow. Let s hope a patch or driver update irons these AMD issues out.
See more of Andy's screenshots here, all taken on ultra settings.
I was sort of aware that Far Cry 4 would have a story, but, until recently, had only ever thought of the game in terms of tigers, elephants, guns and explosions. But fine, I guess I can also take time out of all that to listen to some humans talk and do stuff.
Go trailer:
Far Cry 4 is out today. Andy, who has just received his review code, is currently testing it out. Check back later for his post on the game's PC performance, ahead of his full review later this week.
Oh what's that? There's another trailer?
Huh. That was weird.
Dragon Age: Inquisition is finally out this week—either today if you're in the US, or later if you're not. There is one place where it won't be released, though: India. Why? That isn't entirely clear.
Early reports suggested it was pulled from sale because one of the Inquisitor's romanceable companion characters is gay. EA, however, say this isn't the case. In a statement to Kotaku, they said the following:
"In order to avoid a breach of local content laws, EA has withdrawn Dragon Age: Inquisition from sale in India and the game is no longer available for pre-order. Customers who pre-ordered the game will be contacted directly and will be fully refunded."
"The decision here is in relation to local obscenity laws, but not specific to same gender romance."
It's unclear which part of the country's obscenity laws they're afraid Inquisition might breach—especially in comparison to other, similar games that have received an uncontested release.
Having played through Inquisition, there was nothing that specifically stood out about its more mature content. Unless I've missed some serious sexy times somewhere down one of the game's many branching paths.
The move doesn't just affect retail. Origin orders in India are also unavailable, and existing purchases have been cancelled and refunded.
The new, enhanced, current-gen version of GTA 5 is out, on consoles, this week. The PC release is still a few months away, but, by looking to the PS4 and Xbonio versions, we can get a solid idea of what it will contain.
A new first-person mode has already been announced and trailered, for instance. Also, courtesy of Pitchfork, we now have the entire expanded soundtrack—comprising 162 new songs across the game's multitude of radio stations.

I'm receiving a vision from the future. It is me, GTA 5, and this forever:
Dragon Age: Inquisition is out today! Unless, that is, you have the misfortune of living in a country where it isn't. This, I shouldn't have to tell you, is dumb. The timer on Origin's UK store page tells me that that there are over 2 days and 13 hours until the game is available here. If I hadn't already played it for our review, I'd be a bit miffed about this.
If you, too, are similarly miffed, there is an alternative. Using some small VPN trickery you can bypass Inquisition's regional restriction. It works much like it did back when we told you to do this for Titanfall.
First, a note on the risks involved. As far as I can tell, no-one has ever been banned for using a VPN to gain early access to their legally bought copy of an Origin game. In fact, for Titanfall, Respawn's co-founder confirmed that it was allowed.
So what do you do?
First, you'll need to pre-load Inquisition, which you can do right now through your regular internet connection.
Then, you'll need a VPN. I've previously used SoftEther VPN, and it works well. Alternatives include FlyVPN, which is supposedly more user friendly.
To play the game, make sure Origin is closed, then start the VPN software. If you're running SoftEther, you'll need to click "VPN Gate Public VPN Relay Servers" to open the list of public relays. From here, select a country where Inquisition has launched; such as the USA, or South Korea.
Once connected, launch Origin and start the game. Then, once launched, alt-tab out to close the VPN. You're now able to play Dragon Age: Inquisition—although you may need to repeat this process each time you restart Origin.
